The FBI is entrapping Americans and charging them as terrorists, according to a new report

Human Rights Watch and the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School have just released a damning report in which they accuse the US government of repeated abuses in the investigation and prosecution of terrorism cases.
Duh, right?
Well, you might still be surprised by the report's most troubling allegation: that US government agents, by employing methods of investigation that border on entrapment, have actively encouraged ordinaryAmericans to become terrorists.
The HRW and HRI focused their investigation on 27 post-9/11 terrorism cases involving 77 defendants. They based their report on information from court documents, publicly available documents, Freedom of Information Act requests, and more than 215 interviews with people involved in terrorism cases, including defendants, lawyers, family members, academics, and government officials.
They found a pattern of encouragement, facilitation, and grooming of targets that's worrying if not illegal.
“Indeed, in some cases,” the report claims, “the Federal Bureau of Investigation may have created terrorists out of law-abiding individuals by conducting sting operations that facilitated or invented the target’s willingness to act... All the high-profile domestic terrorism plots of the last decade, with four exceptions, were actually sting operations, splots conducted with the direct involvement of law enforcement informants or agents, including plots that were proposed or led by informants.”
A former FBI agent, Michael German, explained it to HRW and the HRI this way:
Today’s terrorism sting operations reflect a significant departure from past practice. When the FBI undercover agent or informant is the only purported link to a real terrorist group, supplies the motive, designs the plot and provides all the weapons, one has to question whether they are combatting terrorism or creating it. Aggrandizing the terrorist threat with these theatrical productions only spreads public fear and divides communities, which doesn’t make anyone safer."
Take the case of Hosam Smadi. The FBI began investigating Smadi in Jan. 2009 because he'd been posting to jihadist discussion boards. FBI agents intiated contact with him online, and during these early conversations, Smadi insisted that he didn’t want to hurt innocent people and was unsure about violent jihad. The FBI placed him in the “first stage of the radicalization process known as pre-radicalization,” but rather than discourage further radicalization, the agents actively pushed him toward violence.
After months of encouragement and conversation, Smadi agreed to participate in a terrorist act. He'd plant a bomb in the parking garage below a large Dallas building. When the day arrived, he deposited the explosive, which the FBI agents had made, and then met an undercover agent in a car. There he dialed a number into his cell phone, believing that it would detonate the device. He was charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and sentences to 24 years in prison.
What would have happened to Smadi if the FBI had just left him alone?
The HRW and HRI report finds lots of other reasons to be concerned about the handling of terrorism investigations and prosecutions. Check out the report and you'll find plenty of information about the use of "material support" charges, the admission of various types of inappropriate evidence, and the reliance on pre-trial solitary confinement.

Putin is much more cynical than you think

1 Share
Putin 08 08 2014Enlarge
(Alexey Druzhinin/AFP/Getty Images)
The conventional wisdom about Vladimir Putin is that he sees the West as a threat to Russian security. NATO expansion into Eastern Europe in the 1990s took advantage of Moscow’s weakness following the debilitating Soviet collapse, the Russians say. Now the United States is leading the West in backing color revolutions and other means of toppling old administrations in Ukraine and other countries in Moscow’s backyard. Some say the Russian president even believes his own propaganda that Washington’s ultimate goal is to depose him and steal his country’s vast energy resources.
In fact, Putin isn’t trying to stoke a new Cold War with the West because he takes his own fantasies seriously. He only wants Russians to believe he’s turning back the clock because it’s driving up his popularity by making him appear strong. It’s difficult to conceive that he actually buys his own propaganda: He invented the Western threat in order to play on the fears of the majority of Russians, who are nostalgic for the USSR’s lost superpower status.
Putin’s main aim is to do whatever it takes to dominate international headlines. Nothing shows him to be restoring Russian influence more than for his image to be seen on CNN next to Barack Obama’s, as if the two were equal in power. Russia may be corrupt, autocratic and backward, but just as deprivation under communism made pride in Soviet achievements more important for salving popular anger, Putin’s antics are helping Russians submit to his increasingly draconian rule by living in denial about the true damage it’s wreaking on their country.
However, with the Gaza conflict, Ebola and now Iraq pushing Ukraine’s civil war out of the leading international headlines, that’s becoming increasingly harder to do. Which is the main logic behind Putin’s inexorable ratcheting up of his standoff with the West. That’s why far from prompting moderation, the outrage caused by the downing of flight MH17 only added fuel to the fire: Controversy is exactly what Putin wants.
Of course that's not sustainable in the long term. The USSR may have nursed its opposition to the West for 70 years, but there’s no more American anti-communist hysteria to help provide justification for the Kremlin’s accusations today. Far more important, however, is that Russia is no Soviet Union.
Despite Russian nostalgia for life in the past — which supposedly provided cradle-to-grave security regardless of the strictures and deprivation — life wasn’t as stable as it would appear. How cozy was the general practice of carrying string bags in case hours-long lines materialized for food or basic goods that were unavailable in most stores? How pleasant to pay bribes to ensure medical care that was supposedly free? Providing food, shelter and products many in the West took for granted presented daily stresses not usually experienced in Europe and the US.
Which leads to the crucial difference Russians see between communism and what came after. It’s no accident that Moscow plays host to a consumer-culture orgy, with sushi restaurants seemingly on every corner and Bentleys common on traffic-choked streets. Goods and services may be expensive, but for those who can afford it, freedom to purchase what they want has been enough to help swallow the end of democratic elections and free speech and to witness the systematic enrichment of Putin’s cronies in ways that make the reviled oligarchs of the 1990s look reasonable.
Imports make up around 30 percent of Russia’s food consumption — far more for the urban elite that shops in the many supermarkets stocking imported products almost exclusively. With the enactment of a near-total ban on food from the US, EU and other counties that set up sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine, Putin has begun openly dictating what Russians can do in the one hallowed sphere of life in which freedom of choice has remained all-important. Some Russians believe that’s meant as a patriotism-inducing, us-versus-them prelude to invading Ukraine.
Whatever the case, whether and how long such Soviet-style manipulation of people’s consumer choices is popular remains to be seen. Twitter has already exploded with anguish. But what's clear is that after a decade and a half of clamping down on freedoms with relative impunity, Putin has just opened a very risky new chapter for himself.

Australia to impose tougher sanctions on Russia

1 Share
Australia says it is planning to impose tougher sanctions on Russia after Moscow announced food bans that will affect Australian food makers.
“We are working towards stronger sanctions” against Russia, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday.
Abbott also warned Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to pull back Russian troops from the country’s border with Ukraine.
“I say to President Putin…: Hold your forces back. Stay behind the border….”
Also on Friday, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop criticized Moscow and called the food bans “disappointing”.
Bishop also noted that the government will do all it can to minimize the impact of the sanctions.
Australia’s food exports to Russia were worth nearly $370 million (€276 million) last year.
On Thursday, Russia imposed year-long food bans on the United States, the European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway in retaliation for their embargoes on Moscow.
The economic tit-for-tat followed a recent decision by the EU and US to tighten sanctions on Russia, with Brussels extending them from individuals to sectors of the Russian economy.
The sanctions also include an arms embargo and restricting sales of sensitive technology, as well as the export of equipment for Russia’s oil industry.
The Western powers accuse Moscow of playing a role in the crisis in eastern Ukraine, which broke out when Kiev launched military operations in April to silence pro-Russia protests, but the Kremlin denies the accusation.
Threats of sanctions intensified further after Malaysian flight MH17, heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was reportedly shot down over Ukraine’s volatile Donetsk region on July 17.
The Western powers also accuse pro-Russia forces of downing the civilian airliner. The pro-Russians deny any involvement in the tragedy.

Alabama Congressman speaks out against “war on whites”

1 Share
The Republican congressman for Alabama, Mo Brooks, said in a radio interview last week that there is a war on White people, which is being waged by the Democratic party, reportedHuffingtonpost.com.
“This is a part of the war on whites that’s being launched by the Democratic Party. And the way in which they’re launching this war is by claiming that whites hate everybody else.”
“It’s part of the strategy that Barack Obama implemented in 2008, continued in 2012, where he divides us all on race, on sex, greed, envy, class warfare, all those kinds of things. Well that’s not true.”
Brooks was responding to an audio clip which warned that the GOP could not survive as the “party of white people.”
In a separate interview with AL.com, Brooks spoke more about his comments.
“It’s much like the congressmen during the [immigration] debate on Friday: Democrat after Democrat was talking racism and race,”
“It’s high time folks started calling out the Democrats for their racial appeals. Certainly if you were to flip the coin and a white person were to say vote for me because I’m white, it would be an uproar and deservedly so. So why do we allow blacks to say vote for me because I’m black or Hispanics vote for me because I’m Hispanic?”
The Congressman is right, there is a war on Whites, but one political party is not to blame.
Because of the opened borders policy in the US, the country is becoming increasingly non-White, and all these non-Whites are going to vote for the parties which can bring more of their own people into the country.
The larger issue here is that immigration and integration is forced on White countries by law. Integration is the polar opposite of segregation, because instead of races being legally required to separate, they are legally required to mix. This is more popularly known as “diversity”. As this immigration and “diversity” is being forced on White countries, it amounts to a policy of genocide.

15 лет назад Владимир Путин был назначен и.о. председателя правительства РФ — Евгений Минченко — Российская газета

1 Share
1. "Заблаговременная победа", когда исход решающего политического сражения решается еще до его начала (как это было практически перед каждыми президентскими выборами и как это было в ситуации с Крымом). Поэтому можно предположить, что политически исход следующих президентских выборов также будет решен заблаговременно, в том числе и для того, чтобы не допустить попыток внешнего влияния на их результат;
2. "Выравнивание элит", когда не допускается чрезмерное усиление ни одной из элитных групп. Мы видим это на примере постоянной кадровой ротации, особенно в силовом блоке;
3. "Оттеснение попутчиков и вовлечение новых союзников". Сегодня это наиболее актуальная технология, поскольку изменившаяся конъюнктура требует обновления пула союзников во внешней политике и привлечения новых кадров, вплоть до конструирования новых элитных групп внутри страны;
4. "Конкуренция преемников", которая ставит своей целью тестирование разных типов персонифицированных подходов к решению актуальных задач;
