A new FBI study confirms that the number of mass shootings in the United States has increased steadily over the past decade. The Bureau issued a report Wednesday that identifies 160 active shootings between 2000 and 2013. The popular belief that religion is the cause of the worlds bloodiest conflicts is central to our modern conviction that faith and politics should never mix. But the messy history of their separation suggests it was never so simple
As we watch the fighters of the Islamic State (Isis) rampaging through the Middle East, tearing apart the modern nation-states of Syria and Iraq created by departing European colonialists, it may be difficult to believe we are living in the 21st century. The sight of throngs of terrified refugees and the savage and indiscriminate violence is all too reminiscent of barbarian tribes sweeping away the Roman empire, or the Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan cutting a swath through China, Anatolia, Russia and eastern Europe, devastating entire cities and massacring their inhabitants. Only the wearily familiar pictures of bombs falling yet again on Middle Eastern cities and towns this time dropped by the United States and a few Arab allies and the gloomy predictions that this may become another Vietnam, remind us that this is indeed a very modern war.
The ferocious cruelty of these jihadist fighters, quoting the Quran as they behead their hapless victims, raises another distinctly modern concern: the connection between religion and violence. The atrocities of Isis would seem to prove that Sam Harris, one of the loudest voices of the New Atheism, was right to claim that most Muslims are utterly deranged by their religious faith, and to conclude that religion itself produces a perverse solidarity that we must find some way to undercut. Many will agree with Richard Dawkins, who wrote in The God Delusion that only religious faith is a strong enough force to motivate such utter madness in otherwise sane and decent people. Even those who find these statements too extreme may still believe, instinctively, that there is a violent essence inherent in religion, which inevitably radicalises any conflict because once combatants are convinced that God is on their side, compromise becomes impossible and cruelty knows no bounds.

It was my most popular post to date, with a readership that Im 99.995% sure Ill never get again, so many thanks to everyone who read and shared it. I got many nice messages about it (which is always appreciated) and some less nice messages (which isnt so much). But it also spurred some interesting discussions. Some argued that the true rationale for suicide is more complex. Others emphasised that to describe depression as an illness or disease is unhelpful. Some claimed I was glorifying depression. Others felt I was understating the issues. And many more.

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov has signed a lustration bill adopted by the parliament on September 16.
British police arrested nine men in London on Thursday morning on suspicion of encouraging terrorism and being members of and supporting banned organizations.
The men arrested range in age from 22 to 51 and are all in police custody in London. One of the men identified is Anjem Choudary, one of the most high-profile radical Muslim preachers in Britain. Choudary, 47, was previously the head of Islamist group al-Muhajiroun or Islam4UK, which was banned in 2010. Choudary is well-known for organizing demonstrations against Western military action in the Middle East and for publicly expressing support for the Sept.11 attacks on the U.S. and the July 7 bombings in London.
London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement that 18 residential, business and community premises are being searched in London, along with one residential property over 150 miles away in Stoke-on-Trent. Police added that the arrests and searches were not a response to any immediate risk to public safety, but were part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist-related terrorism.

French fighter jets struck Isis targets in Iraq on Thursday, government spokesman Stephane Le Foll said.
There were strikes in Iraq this morning, Le Foll said without giving any further details, Reuters reports.

Kurdish forces in northern Syria pushed back an advance by Islamic State fighters towards the border town of Kobani in overnight clashes, two Kurdish officials told Reuters.
Islamic State launched a fresh offensive to try to capture Kobani more than a week ago after months of fighting. More than 100,000 Kurds have fled the town and surrounding villages, crossing over the nearby border into Turkey.
Officials said Islamic State had concentrated their fighters south of Kobani late on Wednesday and had pushed towards the town but Kurdish YPG forces repelled them.
Lebanons army has detained about 450 suspected Islamist militants near its border with Syria, as dramatic pictures emerged of the arrests at the frontier town of Arsal.
The town was the scene last month, of the deadliest spillover of fighting in the three-year civil war in Syria, Reuters reports.
During those clashes that killed dozens, militants captured a group of Lebanese soldiers and have since killed at least three of them. They are believed to be holding more than a dozen others.

An extremist preacher who said he had no sympathy for Alan Henning, the British hostage held by Islamic State radical, has been arrested as part of an investigation into Islamist terrorism.

At least 14 Islamic State militants were killed in Wednesdays attack on oil refineries in eastern Syria, according to an update from UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Foreign fighters were among the dead, it said, without providing details.

Isis militants can make millions of dollars a day from the oil refineries they control in Syria and Iraq, according to analyst Michael Stephens from the security thinktank Rusi.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4s Today programme he said it was a sensible strategy for the US to target oil installations controlled by the group.
We are still assessing the outcome of the attack on the refineries, but have initial indications that the strikes were successful. These small-scale refineries provided fuel to run ISIL operations, money to finance their continued attacks throughout Iraq and Syria, and an economic asset to support their future operations. Producing between 300-500 barrels of refined petroleum per day, ISIL is estimated to generate as much as $2 million per day from these refineries. The destruction and degradation of these targets further limits ISILs ability to lead, control, project power and conduct operations.
The US conducted these strikes as part of the Presidents comprehensive strategy to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL. Going forward, the US and partner nations will continue to conduct targeted airstrikes against ISIL in Syria and Iraq and support Iraqi forces as they go on the offensive against this terrorist group.

“It is now right that Britain should move to a new phase of action,” he said.
Addressing the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, Cameron said, “The U.N. Security Council has now received a clear request from the Iraqi government to support it in its military action against [ISIS]. So we have a clear basis in international law for action and we have a need to act in our own national interest to protect our people and our society.”
Friday’s vote is expected to pass with backing from all three major parties, Reuters reports.
Cameron gave his speech as a U.S.-led coalition launched air strikes on ISIS targets in Syria for a second day.
The U.K. government has not proposed any military action in Syria. Cameron assured the U.N. General Assembly that Britain would not work with Syrian President Bashar Assad to defeat ISIS.
“Our enemy’s enemy is not our friend — it is another enemy. Doing a deal with Assad will not defeat [ISIS] because the bias and the brutality of the Assad regime was and is one of the most powerful recruiting tools for the extremists,” he said.
If Friday’s vote passes, Britain’s Royal Air Force jets will join those from France, Australia, the U.S. and five Arab nations in launching air strikes against ISIS.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Wednesday demanded that Russia pull its forces out of Ukraine and stops the supply of arms to pro-Kremlin rebels.
Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, Yatsenyuk said Moscow must start real peace talks with Ukraine.
“We urge Russia to pull back its forces, to pull back its artillery, to stop the supply of Russian-led terrorists, to restore the control over Ukrainian-Russian border and to start real talks — peace talks,” he said.
Yatsenyuk also urged Western nations not to lift sanctions against Russia until Ukraine regained control of all of its territory, the BBC reports.
In March, Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern peninsular of Crimea, sparking clashes between the Kiev-aligned military and pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country.
Yatsenyuk insisted that he intended to reclaim all lost territory. “Crimea was, is and will be a part of Ukraine,” he said.
Russia denies equipping the rebels or sending forces into Ukraine.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama said he would consider lifting sanctions on Russia if the government abides by a cease-fire signed on Sept. 5. Despite the agreement, fighting has continued in the rebel-held eastern city of Donetsk.
The U.N. says the number of people killed in Ukraine since the conflict began in April has topped 3,000.
“We are the country that needs peace and it’s difficult to hammer out any kind of peace deal at the barrel of a gun, made in Russia,” Yatsenyuk said.
