Russian Warships Enter English Channel
A squadron of Russian warships entered the English Channel on Friday, but a NATO official dismissed a Russian media report that they were there to conduct military exercises. Russian news agency RIA quoted the Northern Fleet as saying its vessels, led by anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, had passed through the Strait of Dover and were now in international waters in the Seine Bay to wait for a storm to pass. "While it is anchored the crew are undertaking a series of exercises on how...

Finland legalises gay marriage
Shared by 1 person
Finland becomes 12th European nation to give same-sex unions the same status as heterosexual marriages
The Finnish parliament has narrowly approved a citizen’s initiative to legalise same-sex marriage.
Gay couples in Finland have been able to enter into registered partnerships since 2002, but until now the country was the only in the Nordic region not to allow same-sex marriage. Finland is now the 12th European state to do so.

Children in Islamic State Propaganda Send Powerful Message
Shared by 1 person
The so-called Islamic State militants appear to be recruiting and training children in Iraq. It features children in its recent stream of propaganda videos and photos. They are portrayed in a variety of ways. Some children seem to play happily among smiling IS fighters. Other young boys, even babies, don black IS garb as they pose next to automatic weapons and a black flag of jihad. Other videos show toddlers firing automatic weapons they can barely hold. And other children are seen...

The Imitation Game: how Alan Turing played dumb to fool US intelligence
One of the few who knew that Bletchley had cracked Enigma was Ian Fleming – working in naval intelligence – but the Americans were kept in the dark
On 12 November 1942, the mathematician Alan Turing arrived in New York, bound for Washington DC and the headquarters of the US Secret Service, an organisation now known as the CIA. More than 500 American ships had been sunk by German U-boats since the US began sending supplies across the Atlantic to Europe in 1941 and naval authorities were growing impatient with Britain’s reluctance to share more than cursory details of progress at decrypting messages sent by the German high command and encoded by the Enigma machine.
Officially, Turing was meant to disclose everything he and his team at Bletchley Park knew about the workings of Enigma. In reality, he was under strict instructions from MI6 to act as its official liar and keep the Americans in the dark as much as possible. It was a strange role for a Cambridge mathematician with a fondness for crossword puzzles, but Turing’s wartime work had landed him in the midst of a game of high-stakes diplomacy.

Pope Francis Begins Turkey Visit
Shared by 1 person
Pope Francis begins a three-day visit to Turkey on Friday, during which he is due to discuss threats to Christian communities in the Middle East with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
After meeting Erdogan, the 77-year-old Argentine will travel to Istanbul over the weekend. He claims to want to forge a closer relationship between the Catholic Church and the Muslim world, reports Al Jazeera.
Turkey boasts only around 80,000 Christians compared to 75 million Muslims. The nation has hit the headlines in recent months as a launching point for jihadists wanting to join the sectarian slaughter wreaked by groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS.)
A radical Sunni cult, ISIS has vowed to exterminate both the region’s Shia Muslims and Christian sects such as the Yazidis.

Was Shakespeare gay, and does it matter?
Shared by 1 person
Although not a new question, its re-emergence is germane to the interpretation of his plays, and not just a scholars’ spat
Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116, Let me not to the marriage of true minds, has of recent years become as popular a recitation at weddings as recitals of Frank Sinatra’s My Way at funerals.
If wide notice is taken of a current spat over what we can read about Shakespeare’s sexuality into the sonnets in the correspondence columns of the Times Literary Supplement, Sonnet 20 may be a future favourite at civil unions. The opening line, to remind you, is A woman’s face with nature’s own hand painted / Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion.

These Tory Eurosceptics are Cameron’s Trotskyists – time to shut them down
Shared by 1 person
Instead of pandering to Ukip-leaning backbenchers in his immigration speech, the prime minister should learn from how Labour saw off Militant tendency
In his speech on immigration the prime minister has a chance to show some leadership on the issue and on Britain’s place in the EU. He has tried running from his Eurosceptic backbenchers. He has tried throwing them bones. He has tried ridiculing Ukip, then imitating them. For David Cameron none of it has worked. This week Owen Paterson, his former environment secretary, even suggested the prime minister hand the EU a resignation letter from Britain before his renegotiation had even started. That is not a negotiating tactic. It is a notice to quit.
It is time to confront the argument that we need to pull out of the EU because of the free movement of people. Leadership is about standing up for Britain as a confident outward-looking country open to people, ideas and investment and keen to be a leading player in the EU and globally. It is about making the most of the world as it has changed in recent decades, not looking for a rewind button to a world that no longer exists.

Pope Francis Begins Turkey Visit, Meets Erdogan
The Vatican said Pope Francis aims to strengthen ties with Muslim leaders during a three-day visit to Turkey that begins Friday.
