Under Siege, Ukraine Awaits Decision on Lethal Aid

At the last checkpoint before the battle zone, Ukrainian troops keep a careful watch on who goes in, while families squeeze into cars to leave and busloads of children head out to relatives or shelters.   Just beyond is the mostly deserted town of Papasna, which has repeatedly been hit by shelling. Senator Faults US Plan for Military Exit From Afghanistan

The United States should not make a hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan as it did in Iraq, and instead should keep current troop levels through 2017, a newly elected influential Republican senator said Thursday. In a speech at the U.S. Institute of Peace, Sen. Japanese Man Accused of Raping Dozens of Women During Fake Sleep Studies

A Japanese man is accused of posing as a doctor and sexually assaulting “around 100 women” who thought they were participating in a sleep study.
Hideyuki Noguchi allegedly recorded the attacks and sold them to porn sites, authorities in Japan said Tuesday, according to CNN.
He was arrested after one of the women he allegedly attacked found a video of herself online.
Police say Noguchi, 54, placed ads looking for participants for “clinical research measuring blood pressure during sleep,” the AFP reports. The ads reportedly sought women from their teens to their 40s.
Dozens of women responded. Noguchi is said to have drugged his victims after luring them to hotels and resorts across Japan. He then assaulted them while they were passed out, filming the encounters. Authorities said he allegedly sold the videos to porn sites, making around $100,000.
The assaults began in September 2011 and continued over a period of two years. Police in Chiba, a city east of Tokyo, have confirmed a total of 40 incidents involving 39 women, though authorities say Noguchi has told them the number of victims is closer to 100.
He faces charges of incapacitated rape in more than three dozen cases.

Why To Kill a Mockingbird is overrated

Mockingbird’s ‘sequel’ Go Set a Watchman was written first so it might be truer to Harper Lee’s original vision
On Tuesday, I came out of a meeting to find a barrage of messages with the news that Harper Leehas written a sequel to her classic 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird and will be publishing it this summer. To say that I was startled would be putting it mildly; it was simply astonishing news. The novel’s many fans had long inured themselves to Lee’s seemingly irreversible decision not to write another novel. Her pen simply “froze”, Lee once declared, after the maelstrom of publicity and praiseMockingbird received, and she firmly rejected her loving, demanding audience’s repeated efforts to interview her or persuade her to write something more.
Then I saw the title of the “new” novel and realised that nothing had changed: Lee has not suddenly caved in to our desires and produced a sequel to Mockingbird at the age of 88. Scholars have long known of an earlier draft of Mockingbird called Go Set a Watchman (and at least one other title, if not another draft, called Atticus), and it is this book that will be published in the summer.

An unexpected ending for literary progress?

What does the current fashion for open endings have to tell us about literary progress? Ask Chekhov ...
There’s no science to the saying that while two things are just a coincidence a third makes a trend, but the last three collections of short stories I happen to have read have all been full of open narratives, bursting with transcendence.
It started with Colin Barrett’s lyrical Young Skins, which won the Guardian first book award last year. Set mostly in County Mayo, these stories follow a cast of bouncers, drifters and drug dealers as they criss-cross the streets of a fictional small town – the threat of violence always at their shoulder. On the night of the award, the judges and his editors lined up to praise not only his striking voice, but also his deft touch with narrative.
“He is trying to remember, to figure out what happened during the trip, if anything, and what it has to do with what is happening here now.”
“Once the eye is used to these shades, half the ‘conclusions’ of fiction fade into thin air; they show like transparencies with a light behind them – gaudy, glaring, superficial. The general tidying up of the last chapter, the marriage, the death, the statement of values so sonorously trumpeted forth, so heavily underlined, become of the most rudimentary kind. Nothing is solved, we feel; nothing is rightly held together. On the other hand, the method which at first seemed so casual, inconclusive, and occupied with trifles, now appears the result of an exquisitely original and fastidious taste, choosing boldly, arranging infallibly, and controlled by an honesty for which we can find no match save among the Russians themselves.”

Rebels, Ukrainian Forces Agree on Humanitarian Corridor

(VUHLEHIRSK, Ukraine) — The pro-Russia rebels in Ukraine reached agreement with government forces on a humanitarian corridor to evacuate civilians from the epicenter of fighting on Friday as German and French leaders prepared to bring their peace plan to Moscow.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande are set to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin a day after discussing their proposals with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
The diplomatic blitz comes amid fierce fighting that prompted Washington to consider providing the beleaguered Ukrainian military with lethal weapons, in turn sparking European fears of even wider hostilities.
Rebel leaders said they reached agreement with Ukrainian authorities to allow the evacuation of civilians from Debaltseve, a key railway hub that has become the focus of fighting in recent weeks because of its strategic location. It wasn’t immediately clear where the evacuees would go.
The cease-fire around Debaltseve held Friday as a convoy of several dozen buses drove from nearby Vuhelhirsk toward Debaltsevo, where a shrinking population has been trapped in cross-fire and left without power, heating and running water for almost two weeks. Half-way to Debaltsevo, the convoy’s movement was stopped by concrete blocks, apparently intended to block military vehicles from using the road.
The fighting in eastern Ukraine between Russia-backed separatist rebels and Ukrainian forces has intensified sharply over the past two weeks. Russia vehemently denies that it is backing the insurgency with troops and weapons, but U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry rejected that denial on Thursday’s visit to Kiev.
France and Germany were hoping this time they can come up with a peace deal acceptable both to Ukraine and Russia. In a sign of the importance of the initiative, this will be Merkel’s first trip to Moscow since Ukraine’s conflict broke out last year.
More than 5,300 people have been killed since the separatist insurgency flared up in eastern Ukraine in April following Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.
