Turkish President Erdogan Denies The 1915 Armenian Genocide

A picture released by the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute dated 1915 shows the child victims of the massacre of Armenians during World War I.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has downplayed the massacre of Armenians during World War I, saying that Turkish ancestors never committed genocide.
“The Armenian claims on the 1915 events… are all baseless and groundless,” Erdogan said at the Istanbul Peace Summit on Thursday.
“I would like to address the European Union. They have been advising us to open our archives. I have always been saying that we are ready to open our archives,” he said, adding that there are millions of documents.
“We are also ready to open our military archives,” the Turkish president pointed out.
Erdogan said that historical documents about the 1915 events are open to all for analysis, calling on Armenia and other countries to open their archives as well.
On April 20, Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Ankara shares Armenians’ pain over the mass killing of their ancestors in 1915, but stopped well short of recognizing the killings as genocide.
“We once again respectfully remember and share the pain of grandchildren and children of Ottoman Armenians who lost their lives during deportation in 1915,” Davutoglu said.
However, he said, “To reduce everything to a single word, to put responsibility through generalizations on the Turkish nation alone… is legally and morally problematic.”
Armenians claim that up to 1.5 million Armenian Christians were systematically slaughtered in eastern Turkey through mass killing, forced relocations and starvation, a process that began in 1915 and took place over several years during World War I and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire.
Ankara rejects the term “genocide” and says 300,000 to 500,000 Armenians, and at least as many Turks perished between 1915 and 1917, in what the Turkish government sees as the “casualties” of World War I.

Russia should face more sanctions if it stokes Ukraine further: UK Labour's Miliband

LONDON (Reuters) - The West should step up sanctions on Russia if the Kremlin shows further aggression in Ukraine, British opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband said on Friday.

Ukraine’s future is in Europe – we have chosen our path

Our war on corruption will bring us closer to EU membership and ensure that in the new Ukraine no one is above the law
Ukrainians stood up in the frigid cold of a Kiev winter more than one year ago – facing arrest, truncheons and ultimately a hail of bullets – with concrete goals in mind. The revolution was, at its core, an affirmation of the European values of fairness and the rule of law. It was a fight for transparent democracy, accountability for public officials and an end to the rampant corruption that has plagued our country.
The former system of governance in Ukraine, in which public officials and prominent businesspeople operated under the table and above the law, shut us off from the rest of Europe. For Europe, with all its existing problems and challenges, has codified a system of checks and balances and a system of laws. Europe represents Ukraine’s future.
We are introducing a total change of the rules of the game – there will be no obstacles for entrepreneurs who play fair

Argentina Opens New Chapter in Relationship With Russia

April 23, 2015. Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner during a meeting in the Kremlin.
There are no reasons why Russia and Argentina shouldn’t have bilateral ties, Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner said, stressing that it is “absurd” to deem Russia a threat. Kirchner spoke to RT in her first interview to a foreign media in five years.
“I believe that Russia is a player of a global, worldwide scale, its participation is investable; this is why I don’t see reasons why there should be no bilateral relations [between Argentina and Russia],” Kirchner said when she was asked to comment on Britain’s intention to boost its military presence in the region, citing warming Russian-Argentinian relations.
Last month, UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon announced a $271 million plan to strengthen its military presence in the Falklands to respond to “a very live threat”.
“I think that, despite all assertions that the Cold War and confrontations are in the past, that we live in more global world, there are many who still follow double standards, when for existence or supremacy they need an enemy,” Kirchner replied referring to Britain.
As the Argentinian leader spoke about Russian-Argentinian relations, she stressed that not Russia, but the US remains “the most important investor” for the Latin American state.
“Then we should be worried about such amount of Americans in our country, especially given the current events in the world,” Kirchner stressed. “It is an absurd to really think that Russia is a threat.”
On Thursday, Russia and Argentina sealed energy package as well as $3 billion in deals.
Thus, Russia plans to invest $2 billion in Argentinian nuclear power plants, and Russia’s Gazprom has signed a deal to explore oil and gas fields in Argentina, a project worth another $1 billion.
“In my opinion, this double ‘friend-foe’ logic should cease to exist in the world, because besides many other things, it leads to some really intolerable situations. This is why today [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and I signed a joined agreement about dialogue, politics, diplomacy and multilateral cooperation and about UN’s role as the only possible factor of stopping and, eventually, resolving conflicts,” Kirchner said.
There are no conflicts in Disneyland
The Argentinian president, whose second term will end in 2016, believes that being a woman does influence the attitude to her and triggers criticism from the “ruling circles.”
“It is obvious that there is still an element of female discrimination in politics,” she said. “If, being a woman, I would do everything what powerful structures want to, I am sure I that case they would really praise me and call me smart and talented. But, besides that I am a woman, I also act not the way they want me to, and this is a double sin.”
Yet, citing Margaret Thatcher as an example, she said that being a female leader “is not a necessary condition for a constant criticism.”
“If a person becomes a head of Disneyland, of course he will be loved; because everybody likes Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck…There are no conflicts in Disneyland. So if you are a president of Disneyland, of course you will be loved because what would you be doing there? Walking in forest, gardens and give out candies,” Kirchner joked.

Armenians Are Still On the Run 100 Years On

For four years Krikor held out. Twice shells hit his home in Aleppo and he rebuilt it. His wife had shrapnel lodged in her leg and chest after a bomb tore down their neighbor’s house, but the family refused to leave their home in the city’s Armenian quarter. Then, two weeks ago, as opposition forces escalated their offensive on regime-held areas of Aleppo, one of his closest friends and daughter nearly died in a bombing. He rushed them to hospital and watched as they clung to life. Three days later Krikor packed his wife and two daughters into a taxi and fled for Lebanon.
“Life had become unbearable,” says Krikor. Things had been bad for a while. Eight months ago it became too dangerous for him to go to his auto supply shop that had supported his family for decades. His relatives have been kidnapped by rebels and killed by snipers in the streets. It wasn’t that he didn’t have the $400 for the trip to Beirut, but as the grandson of Armenian refugees who fled their homes 100 years ago this month, he was raised on stories of displacement, refuge and an exile that never ended.
On April 24 each year, the Armenian diaspora commemorates what they say was genocide against their people by the Turkish leaders of the Ottoman Empire. As many as 1.5 million Armenians were killed and thousands sent on death marches into the desert. Some reached the Syrian borders seeking what they thought would be temporary refuge. “My grandparents fled their villages. And still today, one hundred years later, we have not gone back,” says Krikor. “This is one of the things that made me stay in Syria so long.”
For Krikor, it’s particularly sad this week that he will be commemorating the 100-year anniversary of his grandparents’ exodus, in a second exile. His family lived for almost a century in Aleppo and had made the Syrian city their home. He had a comfortable apartment, a successful shop and his daughters were in good schools. He was part of the once 100,000-strong Armenian community in Syria.
The day after Krikor arrived in Beirut he put his family on a plane to Yerevan, the capital of the modern Armenian state. More than 15,000 Armenians from Syria have left for Yerevan, with the promise of assistance from the government there. But Krikor doesn’t want to go. Today’s Armenia does not include the villages of Krikor’s grandparents. Like most in the Armenian diaspora, his ancestral lands are actually part of present-day Turkey. Instead, he’s debating return to Aleppo. “I don’t want to give up my property and life,” says Krikor. Because he hopes to go back, he is scared to use his real name, fearing he will be targeted by opposition rebels. “I hope to return.”
Bedro Zeitounian also fled Aleppo three years ago and now has a small shop in the Bourj Hammoud neighborhood of Beirut, once an Armenian refugee camp, now a densely populated, primarily Armenian, neighborhood. Here, the walls are spraypainted with anti-Turkish graffiti — “Turkey guilty of genocide.” Another popular one has the words “Eastern Turkey” crossed out, and instead “Western Armenia” written above.
For Zeitounian, the atrocities against Christians in Syria and Iraq today, are reminiscent of the stories his grandparents told him of their exodus. “What these rebels and ISIS are doing is incredible. These stories of cutting off heads — these were only stories we heard from our grandmothers and grandfathers,” says Zeitounian. “But now we are seeing it in front of us.” Zeitounian also wants to return to Aleppo, despite knowing little remains of this life there.
“The Armenians want to go back to Syria. Otherwise we are helping the Turks to make the Middle East — Syria, Iraq, Lebanon — without Armenians,” says Hagop Pakradounian, a member of the Lebanese parliament and head of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation in Lebanon. “We don’t want that.”
In March of 2013, Islamist rebels stormed the Syrian-Armenian town of Kassab. They entered through the Turkish border and residents fleeing the town were quick to put the blame on Turkey, saying the Turks helped the jihadis enter the Christians village. For the large part, Armenians have sided with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, against their historic Turkish foe, whom have been clear they want Assad out. Armenian Syrians have become targets for kidnappings, extortion and murders. An estimated 40,000 Armenians remain in Aleppo, most in regime-controlled parts of the city.
“Our history has always been a history of war and refugees,” says Pakradounian. “How many times in century will be subject to immigration, displacement and deportation?”

In Turkey, WWI Gallipoli Campaign Honored

Families of soldiers who served in the Gallipoli campaign of World War I, along with world leaders, streamed onto the battle sites on Friday for ceremonies marking 100 years since the British-led invasion. Representatives of countries that faced off in one of the most iconic events of the war were honoring the dead in a joint ceremony, on the eve of the centenary since troops landed on beaches here. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Britain's Prince Charles each laid wreaths at a memorial for the fallen Turkish soldiers at Gallipoli before listening to a recitation from the Muslim holy book as well as prayers for peace. A band in Ottoman Janissary costume performed old Turkish military marches. "Despite the appalling sacrifices made by so many in two world wars, intolerance combined with the willingness to use the most barbaric violence remain a persistent and prevailing source of division and conflict,'' Charles said at the Turkish memorial. "We all have a shared duty ... to find ways to overcome intolerance to fight against hatred and prejudice so that we can truly say we have honored the sacrifice of all those who have fought and died here in Gallipoli and elsewhere,'' Charles added. Ceremonies were to later move to the British memorial site, where Prince Harry, Charles' son, was scheduled to deliver a speech. Major commemorations Saturday The main events are scheduled for Saturday, the anniversary of the dawn landings by troops – mostly from Australia and New Zealand – who were rowed in to narrow beaches with scant cover only to encounter rugged hills and fire from well-concealed Turkish defenders. The doomed Allied offensive aimed to secure a naval route from the Mediterranean to Istanbul through the Dardanelles, and take the Ottomans out of the war. It resulted in over 130,000 deaths and came to be seen as a folly of British war planning.  Around 44,000 Allied troops died in the campaign; about 86,000 were killed on the Ottoman side. The campaign, however, helped forge national identities for countries on both sides. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk used his prominence as a commander at Gallipoli, known as Canakkale to the Turks, to vault into prominence, lead Turkey's War of Independence and ultimately found the Turkish Republic. Event distinguished identities Similarly, the tragic fate of troops from Australia and New Zealand is said to have inspired an identity distinct from Britain. The anniversary of the start of the land campaign on April 25, known as ANZAC Day, after the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, is marked as a coming of age for both nations.  "The Battle of Gallipoli is a striking reminder that the Great War was truly a world war,'' Charles said. "Not only were its combatants drawn from so many different nations, but also … its effects were truly global.'' "It destroyed old empires and created new fissures just as it brought some countries together in shared endeavors and strengthened national identities,'' Charles said. Erdogan, in his address, said all fallen soldiers were now considered the children of Turkey, echoing the words of Ataturk, who paid tribute to the dead soldiers from Australia and New Zealand after the war. "You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore, rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us,'' Ataturk's eulogy reads. "They have become our sons as well.'' Last month, Turkey marked the centenary of a naval victory against the Allies, when the Ottoman army held off British and French ships in the Dardanelles on March 18, 1915.

Zulu Nationalism, Sparked By King, Confronts Modern South Africa

A crowd of stick-wielding supporters at a soccer stadium roared their approval as South Africa's Zulu king, Goodwill Zwelithini, insisted he was not behind a wave of violence against migrant workers he had compared a month before to head lice. His words had been twisted by the media, he said. If he had really given the order for his legions of followers to attack, “this country would be ashes.” Remarks like those, with the direct threat of violence, have alarmed politicians and activists in South Africa, who say they amount to an open challenge to the post-apartheid order and its elected leadership, from the traditional head of its biggest ethnic group, the 10 million strong Zulu nation. “This man is laying the basis for a serious contestation that South Africa is going to have,” said Nomboniso Gasa, an expert in traditional law at the University of Cape Town, who was involved in negotiations to end white rule two decades ago. “He is pushing the boundaries. He has started with the most vulnerable — those who always suffer prejudice — but he's also saying to government and everybody else who is opposed to his absolute authority as a Zulu king: 'You watch it.”' Finding a role for traditional ethnic chieftains in a large multi-ethnic democracy has been a challenge since the days of apartheid, when white rulers often empowered tribal leaders as an alternative to giving blacks a real stake in state power. Nelson Mandela struggled with the question of what role to grant the Zulu king and other figures before South Africa's first race-blind election in 1994. Zwelithini's authority over his followers has now drawn fresh concern since March 20, when he spoke against foreign workers: “Let us pop our head lice,” he said. “We must remove ticks and place them outside in the sun. We ask foreign nationals to pack their belongings and be sent back.” Since then, at least seven people have been killed in attacks on migrants. While he has insisted that those remarks were taken out of context and that he opposes violence, his declaration at the Durban soccer stadium last week that he has the power to unleash unrest on an even greater scale caused new alarm. A spokesman for the king did not answer a phone call seeking comment. Zulu empire Of all South Africa's ethnic groups, few have an identity as strong as the Zulus, who make up over a fifth of the population. Central to that identity is King Shaka, the warrior-monarch credited with uniting the Nguni-speaking tribes of eastern South Africa in the early 1800s into a Zulu empire overseen by a brutal and ruthlessly efficient military machine. Under Shaka and successors such as Dingaan and Cetshwayo, the bravery and loyalty of the spear-carrying impi, or foot soldier, against European colonizers armed with rifles became ingrained in the Zulu psyche. Those legends endured during apartheid, when most blacks were confined to “homelands,” quasi-autonomous states run by tribal leaders who were in most cases paid by the white-minority government in Pretoria. When white rule crumbled in the early 1990s, Zulu and other tribal leaders emerged as a potent force bidding for a place in the negotiations to build a new South Africa. Zwelithini's uncle and mentor, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, took the Zulus to the brink of civil war, with his Inkatha Freedom Party opposing Mandela's African National Congress (ANC) and demanding the king be included in talks on the future. Mandela refused. “We argued that the king should be above politics, and that if he was included then every tribe in South Africa should be able to send their paramount chief,” he wrote in his 1994 biography, Long Walk to Freedom. Constitution vs. customs Nevertheless, the 1996 constitution recognized “the institution, status and role of traditional leadership,” and laws enacted in 2003 and 2004 gave tribal elders sway over issues as vital as land ownership and administration. Under President Jacob Zuma, a polygamous Zulu traditionalist elected in 2009, the trend has continued, most notably with a Traditional Affairs bill that appears to give tribal chiefs a say in municipal and even provincial government. Concern grew last year when Zwelithini announced he was launching a formal claim for restitution of vast tracts of ancient Zulu land, including Durban and plots in neighboring provinces owned by other ethnic groups, including white farmers. Few expect the claim to succeed, but it could give the king more leverage with the ruling ANC, which needs him to ensure it maintains Zulu support in local elections next year. “For the ANC to control the province, whether they like it or not, they have to work with the king,” said Velaphi Mkhize, a Zulu culture expert at the University of KZN in Durban. “The ANC knows that the king's voice matters the most in this province.” At a news conference on Wednesday, ANC Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte admitted as much when she declined to condemn Zwelithini's remarks about immigrants. “In South Africa, the constituencies that have allegiance to traditional leaders react very negatively when you attack their traditional leader,” she said. “We have to be somewhat smarter in our approach.”

Is Putin About To Begin a Third Chechen War To Escape Ukrainian Impasse?

Staunton, April 24 – Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s has made a statement that his forces should attack anyone, “Muscovite or Stavropol resident,” who might appear on the territory of the republic, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has suggested that the Islamic State is Russia’s main enemy may presage the opening of a third post-Soviet Russian-Chechen war.
The launching of such a conflict would give Vladimir Putin three great advantages: First, it would distract the West’s attention from his aggression in Ukraine and suggest to some in the West that Moscow is on the same side as the West is when it comes to Islamist radicalism, a shift that might be enough to end or at least soften the current sanctions regime.
Second, it would allow Putin to continue to exploit the patriotic hysteria he has generated among Russians with his Anschluss of Crimea and his talk of a “Russian world” while backing away from further moves in Ukraine or anywhere else beyond the borders of the Russian Federation at least for some period of time.
And third, it would win him new support within the Russian security agencies, many of whom, as the conflict over the issue of who is to be held responsible for the murder of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov showed, are looking for an opportunity to take out Kadyrov and his increasingly independent regime.
But if such a strategy has these advantages, it has some very real risks, two of which are especially noteworthy. On the one hand, few regional leaders have declared their loyalty to Putin more fervently than Kadyrov has. Moving against him would send a clear message that no one is safe no matter how loyal they may profess to be.
The other risk — in the event of a war, the Chechens will fight and fight well, and they will have the support not only of others in the North Caucasus, including many in Daghestan, but also that of ISIS forces and their allies elsewhere in the Russian Federation and the former Soviet space, particularly those parts immediately adjoining Afghanistan.
For background on these possibilities, see Igor Eidman’s article “And Where Will They Kill Tomorrow?” and Yevgeny Ikhlov’s “An End to Anti-Western Hysteria?” which examines Lavrov’s remarks at NTV.ru.

‘Even Putin Now Knows Massive Attack on Ukraine Would Be a Catastrophe,’ Piontkovsky Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, April 24 – Andrey Piontkovsky, who in the past has warned that Vladimir Putin will continue to escalate his acts of aggression, now says that there is unlikely to be any massive Russian attack on Ukraine because “even Putin understands that such an adventure would be catastrophic for his personal power.”

Of course, the Russian analyst says, one cannot totally exclude Putin might do something others would see as self-destructive given that “even Angela Merkel has recognized Putin lives in a parallel reality -- and who knows what a madman with unlimited power might do” (nv.ua/opinion/piontkovskiy/v-donbasse-rossiya-nadorvala-svoy-imperskiy-pupok-45655.html).

Piontkovsky draws this conclusion on the basis of three ideas. First, he says, “Putin does not completely control what is taking place in the Donbas.” Second, “even he understands that such an adventure would be catastrophic for the regime as a whole and for his personal power,” given the losses it would entail.

And third, he points to an article by Fyodor Lukyanov in “The Moscow Times” last Sunday in English with the title, “Putin Wants Peaceful Coexistence with the West” (themoscowtimes.com/article/519330.htmlas an indication Putin has less room for maneuver than many think and that he or those around him are looking for a way out.

“The Russian elite, the so-called ruling class,” Piontkovsky says, has recognized that [a full-scale attack on Ukraine] would be too dangerous and too expensive.”  And their feeling are well reflected in Lukyanov’s article, one that calls for a new round of peaceful coexistence “on condition” that Moscow retains Crimea and its position in the Donbas but doesn’t go further (kasparov.ru/material.php?id=5537AA7D6E5D2).

That doesn’t mean that Putin will not continue to cause trouble for Ukraine: he will do so as long as he is in office, the Russian commentator says. But it does mean that the risk that the Kremlin leader will launch the kind of major invasion many had expected is now relatively low.
