Grey Wolves plan to rally to mark defeat of Nazi Germany, provoking protests from Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic amid tensions over Ukraine
A Russian biker gang backed by Vladimir Putin is planning to ride through Europe to celebrate the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in the second world war, sparking controversy in central Europe.
A two-week 3,750-mile (6,000km) rally by Russian bikers including the Night Wolves, a fiercely nationalistic motorcycle club, will pass through Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria, before ending in Berlin on 9 May – the day Russia marks the end of its war against Nazi Germany.

Drone Attack Kills Top Cleric, al-Qaeda Branch Says

(CAIRO) — Yemen’s al-Qaeda branch announced on Tuesday that its top cleric, a Saudi-national who has had a $5 million bounty on his head, has been killed, allegedly in a drone attack.
Al-Qaeda said in a statement posted on Twitter that Ibrahim al-Rubaish was killed, along with other, unnamed members of the group, by a drone late Sunday. The statement did not specify the location of the drone attack.
Yemeni and U.S. officials had no immediate comment on the claim.
Al-Rubaish, believed to be in his late 30s, was released from Guantanamo Bay in 2006, after which he joined al-Qaeda in Yemen. He was considered the group’s the main ideologue and theological adviser and his writings and sermons were prominent in its publications.
Last year, he hailed the seizure of large swaths of land in Iraq and Syria by al-Qaeda’s rival, the Islamic State group. “I ask God that efforts are united to target the enemies of the religion,” he said in a video recording at the time.
If the drone attack is confirmed, it would be the first use of unmanned aircraft since Yemen sank further into turmoil last month, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to launch airstrikes on March 26 in an attempt to halt Yemen’s Shiite rebels known as Houthis who have taken over much of the country.
The Houthi advance has also forced Yemen’s Western-backed President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee the country as his government crumbled.
U.S. officials have said the collapse of Hadi’s government could undermine Washington’s counterterrorism strategy against al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen, known as Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. Washington considers the branch to be the most powerful in the terrorist network.
In late March, about 100 U.S. military advisers withdrew from the al-Annad air base where they had been leading the U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Yemen.
Washington rarely comments on drone attacks. U.S. officials had been concerned their counterterrorism capabilities would be diminished because of the withdrawal of their staff. However, they said the al-Qaeda branch will likely be drawn toward the internal Yemeni conflict, and away from plotting to go after Western targets.
Al-Qaeda is a staunch rival of the Shiite rebels, and has already waged a number of attacks against their advances.
U.S. officials also said that CIA drone strikes would continue but that there will be fewer of them.

US Senate Panel Advances Congress Vote on Iran Deal

Leaders of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee reached agreement on Tuesday on revisions to a bipartisan bill that would allow Congress to vote on an international agreement to rein in Iran's nuclear program. Committee Chairman Bob Corker and the panel's top Democrat, Senator Ben Cardin, said they had worked out new wording they hope will attract enough support to overcome a possible veto by President Barack Obama. The revisions would shorten the time in which Congress...

Pentagon: IS-held Territory in Iraq Shrinking

U.S. defense officials are touting slow, but steady gains in the effort to degrade and destroy the group known as the Islamic State. The Pentagon says IS has lost 13,000 to 17,000 square kilometers of territory since coalition airstrikes began in August 2014, reducing its holdings in Iraq by 25 to 30 percent. “ISIL has lost large areas where it was once dominant,” said Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren, using another acronym for the group.  “Iraqi security forces along...

Hundreds forced to flee their homes amid unrest that has killed two foreigners and three South Africans, including a 14-year-old boy
At least five people have been killed and hundreds forced to flee their homes in one of South Africa’s worst outbreaks of xenophobic violence in years, authorities said on Tuesday.
Most of the recent unrest occurred in and around the coastal city of Durban, where police said two foreigners and three South Africans were killed. The dead included a 14-year-old boy who was allegedly shot during looting on Monday night and died at a hospital, police colonel Jay Naicker said. Some 34 people have been arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and other crimes in the last two days, he said.
