Report: Britain pulls out spies as Russia, China crack Snowden files

By Reuters June 14 at 2:11 PM
LONDON — Britain has pulled out agents from live operations in “hostile countries” after Russia and China cracked top-secret information contained in files leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, the Sunday Times reported.
MI6, Britain’s version of the CIA, has removed agents from certain countries, the newspaper said, citing unnamed officials at the office of British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Home Office (interior ministry) and security services.
Snowden downloaded more than 1.7 million secret files from security agencies in the United States and Britain in 2013, and he leaked details about mass surveillance of phone and Internet communications to the news media, including The Washington Post.
The United States wants Snowden to stand trial.
Snowden was granted asylum in Moscow in 2013. He went to Russia via Hong Kong, and although he has claimed that the encrypted files remained secure, Britain believed both Russia and China had cracked documents, which contain details that could allow British and American spies to be identified, the newspaper said, citing officials.
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Snowden had done a huge amount of damage to the West’s ability to protect its citizens.
“As to the specific allegations this morning, we never comment on operational intelligence matters, so I’m not going to talk about what we have or haven’t done in order to mitigate the effect of the Snowden revelations, but nobody should be in any doubt that Edward Snowden has caused immense damage,” he told Sky News.
A person with the Home Office told the newspaper that Russian President Vladimir Putin did not grant Snowden asylum for nothing.
“His documents were encrypted, but they weren’t completely secure, and we have now seen our agents and assets being targeted,” the person said.
A person with British intelligence said Snowden had done “incalculable damage.”
“In some cases, the agencies have been forced to intervene and lift their agents from operations to stop them being identified and killed,” that person was quoted as saying.
British security agencies declined to comment, and the Russian and Chinese governments were not immediately available for comment.
The revelations about the impact of Snowden on intelligence operations comes days after Britain’s terrorism law watchdog said the rules governing the security services’ abilities to spy on the public needed to be overhauled.
Cameron has promised a swathe of new security measures, including more powers to monitor Britons’ communications and online activity in what critics have dubbed a “snoopers’ charter.”

Netanyahu Warns of 'Accelerating Concessions' with Iran

World powers attempting to broker a nuclear deal are "accelerating concessions" with Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday. Facing a self-imposed deadline at the end of June, the six countries negotiating with Tehran have two weeks to finalize details on how Iran's civil nuclear program will be allowed to move forward. The Israeli leader has staunchly opposed the talks in Geneva, spearheaded by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. "To our...

Surprise moves to detain Sudan’s leader in South Africa make this a test case for international law which the ICC cannot afford to lose
As surprises go, this was one for the diplomatic record books. As 50 heads of state gathered in Johannesburg for a summit of the African Union at the weekend, the international criminal court called on the South African government to arrest Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir. A local NGO, theSouthern Africa Litigation Centre, turned to the judiciary to stop Mr Bashir from leaving. On Sunday a Pretoria judge duly made an order keeping the Sudanese leader in South Africa until a final ruling is given on Monday.
Sudan’s government came out with a confident statement saying Mr Bashir would be allowed to travel back to his country, while an angry African National Congress called on the South African government to challenge the order. But the judge’s move is still a shock and a major precedent, given that Mr Bashir, who is accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur, has not been prevented from travelling over the years across parts of Africa and the Middle East, in spite of the proceedings against him.

As we lug our heavy satchels on to the stage, there is a moment of mutual recognition. A cop, a security specialist, a man in the electronic-payments business and a journalist: we’ve all learned that you don’t check your laptop into a cloakroom, no matter how swish the venue.

Thousands of Syrians flee into Turkey amid intense fightingAKCAKALE, Turkey (AP) - Thousands of Syrians cut through a border fence and crossed over into Turkey on Sunday, fleeing intense fighting in northern Syria between Kurdish fighters and jihadis. The flow of refugees came as Syrian Kurdish fighters closed in on the outskirts of a strategic Islamic State-held town on the Turkish border, Kurdish officials and an activist group said, potentially cutting off a key supply line for the extremists' nearby de facto capital.
Zoo animals escape amid flooding in former Soviet republicTBILISI, Georgia (AP) - Severe flooding in the Georgian capital left at least 12 people dead Sunday and triggered a big-game hunt across the city for lions, tigers, a hippopotamus and other dangerous animals that escaped from Tbilisi's ravaged zoo. Residents were warned to stay indoors as police conducted the hunt, but fear deepened as night fell on the city of 1.1 million with some of the animals still on the loose.
NY Gov: Escaped inmates could be close or 'in Mexico by now'DANNEMORA, N.Y. (AP) - Two convicted murders who used power tools to cut their way out of a prison near the Canadian border could be nearby or "in Mexico by now," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday. The intense manhunt focused on the fields and Adirondack woods near the prison in upstate New York after the inmates' escape was apparently hampered by a prison employee's decision to back out as their getaway driver nine days ago.
Clinton: Obama should use trade fight to his advantageDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday that President Barack Obama should use a setback in Congress to seek the best possible trade agreement with 11 other Pacific Rim nations, pointing to the stumbles over the pact as an opportunity to address Democrats' concerns about job protections and wages. "Let's take the lemons and turn it into lemonade," Clinton told about 600 supporters at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, addressing the controversial Trans Pacific Partnership trade proposal that has splintered Obama from House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and rank-and-file Democrats.

Funeral homes increasingly using dogs to comfort mournersWHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Sandy Del Duca was mourning the death of her father when Lulu, a curly haired goldendoodle, came bounding down the stairs at the Ballard-Durand funeral home. Del Duca thought Lulu was simply the pet of funeral home owner Matthew Fiorillo, whom she was meeting to make arrangements. But the dog also works there - one of an increasing number of dogs being offered by American funeral homes to comfort mourners.
Spacecraft that landed on comet finally wakes upBERLIN (AP) - To scientists' relief and delight, the Philae spacecraft that landed on a comet last fall has woken up and communicated with Earth after seven long months of silence, the European Space Agency announced Sunday. Philae became the first spacecraft to settle on a comet when it touched down on icy 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in November. But the solar-powered probe came down with a bounce and ended up in the shadow of a cliff instead of in direct sunlight.

Zoo animals roam free in Georgia's capital after floodingTBILISI, Georgia (AP) - Tigers, lions, a hippopotamus and other animals escaped from the zoo in Georgia's capital after heavy flooding destroyed their enclosures, prompting authorities to warn residents in Tbilisi to stay inside Sunday. At least 12 people have been killed in the disaster, including three zoo workers. An escaped hippo was cornered in one of the city's main squares and subdued with a tranquilizer gun, the zoo said. Some other animals also have been seized, but it remained unclear how many are on the loose. Bears and wolves are also among the animals that fled from their enclosures amid the flooding from heavy rains and high winds.
AKCAKALE, Turkey (AP) - Syrian Kurdish fighters closed in on the outskirts of a strategic Islamic State-held town on the Turkish border Sunday, Kurdish officials and an activist group said, potentially cutting off a key supply line for the extremists' nearby de facto capital. Taking Tal Abyad, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa, would deprive the group of a direct route to bring in new foreign militants or supplies. The Kurdish advance, coming under the cover of intense U.S.-led coalition airstrikes in the area, also would link their two fronts and put even more pressure on Raqqa as Iraqi forces struggle to contain the group in their country.
Search continues for murderers who hatched detailed escapeDANNEMORA, N.Y. (AP) - Residents in rural New York, unaccustomed to locking their doors, day or night, were on edge as the manhunt for two killers who cut themselves free from a maximum-security prison with power tools stretched into a ninth day. More than 800 law enforcement officers in the search for David Sweat and Richard Matt scoured the fields and Adirondack woods several miles around the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora near the Canadian border.

Comet lander Philae awakes from hibernationBERLIN (AP) - The comet lander Philae has awoken from a seven-month hibernation and managed to communicate with Earth for more than a minute, the European Space Agency said Sunday. The probe became the first spacecraft to land on a comet when it touched down on the icy surface of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in November. After its historic landing, Philae managed to conduct experiments and send data to Earth for about 60 hours before its batteries were depleted and it was forced to shut down its systems.
Study of returns to the ER suggests lack of follow-up careWASHINGTON (AP) - No one wants to make a repeat visit to the emergency room for the same complaint, but new research suggests it's more common than previously thought and surprisingly, people frequently wind up at a different ER the second time around. Already some ERs are taking steps to find out why and try to prevent unnecessary returns. A Philadelphia hospital, for example, is beginning to test video calls and other steps to link discharged patients to primary care.

Noam Chomsky: Obama is 'an opportunist'

Liberal academic and author Noam Chomsky on Thursday said President Obama is “an opportunist” and Hillary Clinton would follow his lead should she win the White House next year.
“I wrote about him before the primaries in 2008, simply using his webpage — the way he was presenting himself — and he seemed to me like an opportunist,” Chomsky said of Obama, according to WND News.
“His portrayed idealism could not be taken seriously,” he added of the president. “The policies he was proudest of I thought were awful.”
Chomsky argued on Thursday that Clinton, Obama’s former secretary of State, would not be an improvement should she take the Oval Office in 2016.
“[Hillary would be] maybe a little more militant,” he said when asked how Clinton compares with Obama.
Chomsky said he dislikes many of Obama’s signature policies, including his use of drone strikes overseas.
“A principle element of the Magna Carta was the establishment of the presumption of innocence — that a person is innocent until proven guilty through due process in a trial before their peers,” Chomsky said during an interview at his Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) office in Cambridge.
“With the drone assassination campaign, Obama has essentially rescinded this principle by officially designating a person as guilty if the White House decides that they might someday want to harm us,” he said.
“If any other country were doing this, like Iran, we would consider it justification for nuclear war,” Chomsky added.
Another failing, he charged, was ObamaCare.
“What the administration regards as their major achievement, the Affordable Care Act, is a small step toward dealing with what’s, in fact, an international scandal,” he said.
“The U.S. healthcare system is outrageous,” Chomsky said. “It has about twice the cost of comparable systems, at least per capita, and some of the worst outcomes.”
Chomsky additionally slammed Obama as having expanded the surveillance powers of the National Security Agency during his time in office.
“The whistleblower revelations have demonstrated that the state has gone to pretty extreme levels of surveillance in the effort to control the population,” he said. “I think all of that is unconscionable.”
Chomsky also attacked fast-track trading authority for the president and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) it could help authorize.
“It’s called a free-trade agreement, but it’s not,” Chomsky said of the potential trade agreement among 12 Pacific Rim nations.
“We don’t have the details, because it is essentially kept secret,” he said of the potential deal. “But from all indications, it’s like all the other agreements that are not free-trade agreements.”
