Iran Renews Support For Hamas Terrorists

Iran’s foreign ministry on Wednesday reiterated its support for Hamas and other anti-Israel terrorist groups and said that aiding those who “stand against the Zionist regime is a principle of Iran’s policy.”
The Islamic Republic’s renewed backing of Hamas comes amid reports that relations between the two have been strained in recent months. However, Iran denies that this is the case and made clear this week that it will continue to back terrorist entities that seek Israel’s destruction.
“Iran’s support for all resistance groups continues similar to the past,” said Marzieh Afkham, a spokeswoman for Iran’s foreign ministry, to reporters in Tehran when asked whether the country’s position on Hamas had shifted.
Afkham went on to stress that “supporting members of the resistance front and those who stand against the Zionist regime is a principle of Iran’s policy,” according to Iran’s state-controlled Fars News Agency.
These terrorist groups, with Iran’s support, will “stand on the frontline of war against the Zionist regime [and] would maintain their unity and integrity.”
Iran’s renewed interest in and public support for Hamas is a sign that the Islamic Republic has no intention of moderating its extremist views in light of the recently secured nuclear deal, which officials in the Obama administration claimed would bring Iran into the global community of nations.
However, senior Iranian officials have claimed in recent weeks that Iran will expand its global terrorism agenda as a result of the deal.
Iran will “continue providing weapons to support the Middle Eastern countries fighting terrorism,” Javad Zarif, Iran’s foreign minister, was recently quoted as saying by Iran’s state-controlled press.
Following the nuclear deal, Iran will “preserve its defensive capabilities and send weapons to its regional allies,” according to Zarif.
Meanwhile, members of Hamas have praised Iran in recent comments and thanked the Islamic Republic for its support.
Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official, praised Iran for enabling his group’s war against Israel.
“Iran’s various supports for Palestine have been precious, abundant and greatly influenced the Palestinian resistance,” Marzouk is reported to have said earlier this year.
More than 70 members of the Iranian parliament recently petitioned President Hassan Rouhani to increase “Iranian support for the regional resistance front after the nuclear agreement,” according to the report.
These Iranian lawmakers “called on the president to use the ministries of defense and foreign affairs to send aid to the Palestinians in accordance with instructions from the Supreme Leader to arm the Palestinians in the West Bank.”
Another top Iranian national security official, Javad Karimi Qoddousi, demanded this month that “all the senior Iranian officials … support aid for the Palestinian people and the resistance front so that the nuclear agreement [is not] exploited to strengthen Israel’s security.”

200 Retired Generals, Admirals Write Letter Urging Congress to Reject Iran Nuclear Deal

A group of nearly 200 retired U.S. generals and flag officers sent a letter to Congressional leadership on Tuesday urging them to reject the Iran nuclear deal.
The letter says that the deal creates a decade-long path to nuclear weapons for Iran, while rewardingthe Islamic Republic with cash it can use to rebuild its military and fund terrorism in the short-term.
“The agreement as constructed does not ‘cut off every pathway’ for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons,” it says. “To the contrary, it actually provides Iran with a legitimate path to doing that simply by abiding by the deal.
“In our professional opinion, far from being an alternative to war, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action makes it likely that the war the Iranian regime has waged against us since 1979 will continue, with far higher risks to our national security interests. Accordingly, we urge the Congress to reject this defective accord.”
The letter will likely bolster opposition to the nuclear deal, which is already toxic with the American public despite a hard sell from the Obama administration and liberal activist groups.
The full text of the letter can be read here.

Political command climate cited in soldier's dismissal of rape conviction - Army

WASHINGTON (Tribune News Service) — A Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., soldier was inspired by the military’s ramped-up campaign against sexual assault when she reported in 2012 she had been raped several years before.
The soldier’s belated testimony helped convict Army Staff Sgt. Gabriel C. Garcia. But now, an appeals court has dismissed Garcia’s rape conviction, citing evidence problems as well as a politically infused command climate that deems military sexual assault an epidemic.
“The proceedings were unfair,” the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals said in its unanimous Aug. 18 ruling.
In particular, the two men and one woman on the panel noted how the Army prosecutor summoned sentiments that have swept through Congress and the Pentagon in recent years. The ruling makes clear that all military lawyers must now tread carefully as they balance zeal with justice.
“With multiple references, some overt and others thinly veiled, to the Army’s efforts to confront sexual assault, the government attempted to impermissibly influence the (court martial) panel’s findings by injecting command policy into the trial,” Col. R. Tideland Penman, Jr. wrote for the court.
Currently held at Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston in South Carolina, Garcia, 47, remains convicted on charges involving “maltreatment” of two enlisted women. One said Garcia called her sexually suggestive names in an email. Another said Garcia called her “sexy” and “cutie” and discussed his sex life.
Garcia’s defense attorney says these other charges were imposed to paint Garcia in a bad light, the kind of predator the military is now committed to rooting out.
“This is a case where the pressures on the prosecutors caused them to go way beyond what is proper,” Garcia’s defense attorney Phil Cave said Wednesday. “They knew they weren’t supposed to introduce politics into the case, but they did.”
And, Cave added, “It was a weak case on the facts.”
An Army reaction could not be obtained Wednesday afternoon.
Allegations of unlawful command influence have dogged military courts ever since the anti-sexual assault campaign gained the momentum that led President Barack Obama in May 2013 to declare that those who “engage in this stuff” in the military should be “prosecuted, stripped of their positions, court-martialed, fired, dishonorably discharged. Period.”
“We’re going to communicate this again to folks up and down the chain in areas of authority, and I expect consequences,” Obama added.
Defense lawyers in military sexual assault cases now routinely raise the unlawful command influence issue. Some convictions have been reversed and others upheld, while trial judges have given defense attorneys extra leeway.
A former resident of San Antonio, Texas, Garcia was serving with the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade in Germany when he first met the 23-year-old woman who later accused him.
The soldier, a paralegal specialist, testified Garcia raped and sodomized her. Several weeks after the alleged assault, she accompanied him to dinner and later sent him several sexually provocative photos of herself, according to trial testimony.
Several years later, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, the female soldier reported she had been assaulted. At the time, she testified, she was keenly aware that “there were so many messages coming at me” about the prevalence of military sexual assault, from Army radio announcements to a movie called “The Invisible War.”
“There are certain points in your life where you start hearing things and you kind of get that feeling, like, I feel like somebody is talking to me,” the solder testified, court records show.
The alleged victim further testified that she was older and “more seasoned” as a soldier and was finally “secure in being able to say this is what happened.”
Cave, the defense attorney, said he will file a habeas corpus petition seeking Garcia’s release if the Army doesn’t take action on its own by the end of this week.
