Natalia ‘Sledgehammer’ Ragozina has been spotted with the Russian leader—and she shares his penchant for getting physical.
The Russian Internet is abuzz with rumors that a famous female boxer is Vladimir Putin’s new girlfriend after the two were seen together last week.
Natalia “Sledgehammer” Ragozina is a 39-year-old blonde who won all major female super middleweight boxing titles before retiring in 2009. At the height of her career, Ragozina—who was undefeated—was recognized as the world’s best female boxer. All the while, though, she continued to appear in seductive photoshoots, including one for Penthouse.
Ragozina and Putin’s most recent appearance together was from an international sambo tournament in Sochi last week, from which the Kremlin disseminated an official photo of Ragozina—wearing a body-hugging blue dress—smiling excitedly at Putin. The caption was decidedly more stale: “Russian President Vladimir Putin (R) sits next to former boxer Natalia Ragozina (Natascha Ragosina) as they attend an international combat sambo tournament.”
Just months ago, however, the media erupted with reports of Putin’s other rumored girlfriend was giving birth to the couple’s child in a Swiss hospital.
Coverage of the event from NTV, a Gazprom-owned TV channelreported that Ragozina sat between Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at the event. “In Sochi she wore heels and an evening dress,” NTV added, swapping out her athletic garb.
Putin, it seems, likes sporty women as much as he enjoys publicizing his own athletic endeavors. The 62-year-old leader is known for showing off his physique in shirtless shots, judo matches, and theoccasional arm wrestling competition. Just yesterday the Kremlin released images of Putin and Medvedev working out in Sochii.

The fear and insecurity behind Putin’s bizarre new workout video

On Sunday, the Kremlin released a strange, awkward video of Russian President Vladimir Putin working out with Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev. The camera follows the two men silently lifting weights in a sun-dappled pavilion at the Bocharov Ruchei government residence in Sochi, going from exercise to exercise on the kind of self-balancing weight machines that your CrossFit-obsessed friends are always making fun of.
The decision to release footage of the most powerful man in Russia frowning through a set of calf raises in unflattering sweatpants might seem, to a casual observer, odd. But this is all part of the long-running and quite carefully scripted Putin Adventure public affairs strategy. It follows years of other photo ops and staged videos that are basically official Putin fan fiction. He subdues tigers, rides horses, and communes with dolphins! He pilots tiny submarines and flies tiny aircraft! Kids and dogs love him! Also sometimes he performs dentistry!
This is meant to promote a cult of personality, yes, but also to serve another, perhaps even more important political purpose — one that might not be obvious from outside of Russia, and that says a lot about how Putin's Russia really works, and about what may be Putin's greatest political fear.

The fear behind the photo ops

These often amusing Putin stunts are clearly designed to burnish the president's image as a powerful, healthy, impressive figure. But while that might seem like a way for an autocratic leader to bolster his own ego, the truth is actually darker. These photos aren't about confidence — they're about fear.
Russian political power is centralized around Putin, and if he were to suddenly die or become ill, it's not at all clear what would happen next, who would run the country, or whether the sprawling political system — which has fallen into chaos before — would hold together at all. As a result, even the slightest hint of illness or weakness can cause agitation and panic in the Russian public. Last March, for instance, Putin withdrew from public life for a few days without explanation, and there was immediate, widespread speculation that something terrible might have happened to him, such as a serious illness or even a coup.
Photos of Putin shirtless, looking healthy and powerful, are a way to reassure the public that there's no need to worry. If Putin is fine, then Russia is fine. But consider the implication of that assertion: If Putin is not fine, then neither is Russia.
That truth isn't lost on the country's political and economic elite, whose support Putin relies on to stay in power; he needs the elite to stay in power, and the elite need him to keep things running. As long as Putin stays popular and healthy, he can protect elite interests. But if his health or popularity slips, and the elites no longer trust that he can guarantee stability, then they could withdraw their support, which could be disastrous or even fatal for his regime.
That means that staged photos and videos like this weekend's gym session are something of a barometer of Putin's insecurity. Over the past year, Putin's popularity ratings have been sky-high and the staged Putin Adventure photos have been a bit less frequent — possibly because his invasion of Crimea essentially served as a real-life contribution to the genre.

Is Putin feeling politically insecure?

But in recent weeks, Putin's popularity has begun to slip. The Moscow Times reports that last week, Russian business daily Vedomosti published the results of an August poll by the state-run Public Opinion Foundation, which found that 72 percent of Russians would vote for Putin in an election held today, down from 76 percent in May. A few days earlier, a different poll by Moscow's Levada Center found that Putin's approval rating had fallen to 83 percent, down from its all-time high of 89 percent in May.
Those approval ratings are still extremely high, even taking into account the vagaries of conducting polling in a country with no real political opposition and limited press freedom. But the decline, which may be due in part to rising food prices in Russia, appears to have worried the Kremlin. So now the staged photos are back: The weightlifting footage is the second addition to the genre in less than a month. On August 19, the Kremlin released video of Putin taking a tiny submarine to the floor of the Black Sea.
But while it's entertaining to speculate about what might be next — if his ratings drop further, might Putin decide to swim with dolphins again? Or do more shirtless hunting on horseback? — the deeper truth here is deadly serious. If Putin's hold on power starts to slip, the results will be unpredictable and potentially catastrophic. The same insecurity that leads to goofy weightlifting videos also leads to crackdowns on internal dissent, repression of political opposition, and even military aggression. A scared and insecure Putin is dangerous, and not just for Russia. Watching Putin and Medvedev bro out at the gym is funny — but it could be a sign of much worse to come.

Petraeus: Use Al Qaeda Fighters to Beat ISIS

To take down the so-called Islamic State in Syria, the influential former head of the CIA wants to co-opt jihadists from America’s arch foe.
Members of al Qaeda’s branch in Syria have a surprising advocate in the corridors of American power: retired Army general and former CIA Director David Petraeus.
The former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan has been quietly urging U.S. officials to consider using so-called moderate members of al Qaeda’s Nusra Front to fight ISIS in Syria, four sources familiar with the conversations, including one person who spoke to Petraeus directly, told The Daily Beast.
The heart of the idea stems from Petraeus’s experience in Iraq in 2007, when as part of a broader strategy to defeat an Islamist insurgency the U.S. persuaded Sunni militias to stop fighting with al Qaeda and to work with the American military.
The tactic worked, at least temporarily. But al Qaeda in Iraq was later reborn as ISIS, and has become the sworn enemy of its parent organization. Now, Petraeus is returning to his old play, advocating a strategy of co-opting rank-and-file members of al Nusra, particularly those who don’t necessarily share all of core al Qaeda’s Islamist philosophy.
However, Petraeus’s play, if executed, could be enormously controversial. The American war on terror began with an al Qaeda attack on 9/11, of course. The idea that the U.S. would, 14 years later, work with elements of al Qaeda’s Syrian branch was an irony too tough to stomach for most U.S. officials interviewed by The Daily Beast. They found Petraeus’s notion politically toxic, near-impossible to execute, and strategically risky.
“This is an acknowledgment that U.S. stated goal to degrade and destroy ISIS is not working. If it were, we would not be talking to these not quite foreign terrorist groups.”
It would also face enormous legal and security obstacles. In 2012, the Obama administration designated al Nusra a foreign terrorist organization. And last year, the president ordered airstrikes on al Nusra positions housing members of the Khorasan Group, an al Qaeda cadre that was trying to recruit jihadists with Western passports to smuggle bombs onto civilian airliners.
Yet Petraeus and his plan cannot be written off. He still wields considerable influence with current officials, U.S. lawmakers, and foreign leaders. The fact that he feels comfortable recruiting defectors from an organization that has declared war on the United States underscores the tenuous nature of the Obama administration’s strategy to fight ISIS, which numerous observers have said is flounderingin search of a viable ground force.
According to those familiar with Petraeus’s thinking, he advocates trying to cleave off less extreme al Nusra fighters, who are battling ISIS in Syria, but who joined with al Nusra because of their shared goal of overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al Assad.
Petraeus was the CIA director in early 2011 when the Syrian civil war erupted. At the time, he along with then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reportedly urged the Obama administration to work with moderate opposition forces. The U.S. didn’t, and many of those groups have since steered toward jihadist groups like the Nusra Front, which are better equipped and have had more success on the battlefield.
How precisely the U.S. would separate moderate fighters from core members and leaders of al Nusra is unclear, and Petraeus has yet to fully detail any recommendations he might have.
Petraeus declined a request to comment on his views from The Daily Beast.
“This is an acknowledgment that U.S. stated goal to degrade and destroy ISIS is not working. If it were, we would not be talking to these not quite foreign terrorist groups,” Christopher Harmer, a senior naval analyst with the Middle East Security Project at the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for the Study of War, told The Daily Beast. “Strategically, it is desperate.”
Privately, U.S. officials told The Daily Beast that any direct links with al Nusra are off the table. But working with other factions, while difficult, might not be impossible.
Still, the very forces that Petraeus envisions enlisting, and who may have once been deemed potential allies when they were fighting Assad, now may be too far gone. Moreover, there is no sign, thus far, of a group on the ground capable of countering ISIS, at least without U.S. assistance.
“As prospects for Assad dim, opposition groups not already aligned with the U.S. or our partners will face a choice,” one U.S. intelligence official told The Daily Beast. “Groups that try to cater to both hardliners and the West could find themselves without any friends, having distanced themselves from groups like al Qaeda but still viewed as extremists by the moderate opposition and their supporters.”
News of Petraeus’s proposal comes at a potentially opportune moment for the Obama administration as it looks toward some resolution of the civil war in Syria. On Friday, Amb. Michael Ratney, the newly-minted U.S. special envoy to Syria, set out to meet with Russian, Saudi, and United Nations officials in search of a political settlement to the conflict.
Like Petraeus, Ratney is in search of partners. He’s “trying to come up with options for some sort of political process, a political process that we know is going to have to include opposition groups and try to work through what that means and what that’s going to look like,” State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters last week. Kirby stopped short of saying just which opposition groups should be part of the discussion.
The U.S. has insisted that any negotiated settlement must not include Assad, even as Russia has hinted Assad must be a part of a deal. Assad himself said in a television interview last week that he will not work with U.S. allies in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
On the ground, the two most powerful anti-Assad forces are ISIS and al Nusra, and the U.S. won’t negotiate with either.
Petraeus’s strategy depends on a number of key assumptions, chiefly that U.S. intelligence and military officials would be able to distinguish who among al Nusra’s ranks is truly moderate and doesn’t share the terrorist group’s goal of replacing Assad with an Islamist government.
The former general isn’t the only ex-official who wants to talk to jihadist-linked fighters who share some, if not all, of the United States’ goals.
Robert Ford, the former U.S. ambassador to Syria, has called for dialogue with Ahrar al Sham, a jihadist force he has called “probably the most important group fighting the Syrian regime now.”
In a recent article for the Middle East Institute, Ford said that the capture of the Syrian provincial capital of Idlib last March, which was attributed by some to al Nusra, really should be credited to Ahrar, which had more fighters in the battle.
“Ahrar is a key force on the battlefield, but Western media allots little space to describe it beyond saying it is hard-line or jihadi,’” Ford wrote. That label, he acknowledged, stems from Ahrar calling for an Islamic state in Syria, as well as its collaboration with al Nusra against Assad and ISIS. The group was also founded by a former deputy to the current al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
But, Ford insisted, “Ahrar is not a junior partner of Nusra; there are ideological and political differences between them.”
Some U.S. intelligence officials disputed that, and said Ahrar is currently on a charm offensive, trying to distance itself from Islamic groups like al Nusra and thus win support in Washington while it looks forward to grabbing power after Assad falls.
“Some groups will look to pave their way to a seat at the post-Assad table by seeking public support, such as Ahrar al Sham, while others will affirm their choice through their actions,” the U.S. intelligence official said.
The extent to which the U.S. opposes working with Ahrar, a group that swears it’s independent, points out just how difficult it would be to recruit members of al Nusra, which is al Qaeda’s official affiliate in Syria.
And yet that’s not out of the question. The more extreme ISIS becomes, the more other hardline groups seem to soften by comparison. ISIS, with its filmed executions, organized kidnappings, andenslavement of women and girls has become so barbaric that it has been isolated from other fighting groups on the ground, said Harmer, the military analyst.
“Alliances of convenience that would have been impossible two years are now plausible, and in some ways inevitable, because we are not willing to put boots on the ground,” Harmer said.
Al Nusra has played an arguably helpful role to the U.S. already, albeit indirectly and behind the scenes. In 2014, officials in Qatar reached out to their contacts with al Nusra to help free American journalist Peter Theo Curtis, multiple sources, including former U.S. officials familiar with the negotiations, have told The Daily Beast. Al Nusra elements were operating so closely with the American-backed Free Syrian Army at that time that American warplanes almost hit the moderate rebels as it was targeting the jihadists.

The U.S. has tried other means to field a sustainable ground force to confront ISIS. So far, none of them have worked reliably. The most successful ground force so far has been the YPG, a Kurdish element, which drove ISIS out of the northern Syrian city of Kobani and other nearby cities under the cover of U.S. airstrikes.
But since the U.S. struck a deal to allow combat flights from Turkey, which opposes emboldening Kurdish forces, doubts have surfaced over whether the U.S. would keep providing air support for the YPG as its seeks to take Syrian territory. So far, the YPG has not pushed for any more land, instead defending what it already has.
U.S. efforts to train local forces in Syria have faltered, as well. The first batch of 54 fighters trained by American military forces dissolved earlier this month. Some fighters fled back to their homes in Syria. Others were captured by al Nusra. While the U.S. military has said it’s still training fighters, privately officials concede the group has fallen far short of expectations. At one point, the U.S. planned to train 15,000 fighters in three years.

Now NATO’s Prepping for Hybrid War

NATO is preparing to hold its most complex military drills in decades — perhaps since the Cold War — as it readies allied troops for a range of hybrid combat scenarios that they might face in coming years.
Tens of thousands of troops, hundreds of aircraft, ships and submarines are expected to participate in the October-November exercises in and around Spain, Portugal and Italy. The last time NATOassembled so many forces for a wargame was in 2002; this year’s event is considered even more complicated.
“We need forces prepared to do their job and it appears that their job is more and more demanding,” French Air Force Gen. Jean-Paul Paloméros, leader of the NATO command that coordinates alliance training, told reporters in Washington Wednesday. “In terms of intensity, this exercise is stronger thanNATO has been training [for], perhaps since the end of the Cold War.”
Called Trident Juncture 2015, the exercise will simulate many types of scenarios that have popped up over the past 13 years, including cyber attacks and ballistic missile defense. By contrast, NATOforces have spent most of the past decade fighting counterinsurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Earlier this month, the Army conducted a similar hybrid-style exercise in California, one of its own most complex drills in more than a decade. That exercise is part of a larger push by Army leaders to prepare units for a high-end war, a form of combat that received short shrift as hundreds of thousands of troops waged counterinsurgency campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The goal of Trident Juncture is to re-train in maneuver warfare, “which is an expertise that we have lost for the last two decades because of the nature of operations in which we were involved,” Paloméros said.
The alliance now plans to run exercises like Trident Juncture every three years. “This is ambitious enough and it gives us the time to prepare, to plan and to take the full benefit of this big investment,” Paloméros said. The next exercise like this will take place in Northern Europe – Norway, the Baltic Sea and North Sea – and will include an Article 5 scenario, in which the alliance must respond to an attack on a NATO country.
More than 36,000 NATO troops from 27 alliance member countries and seven partner nations will participate in Trident Juncture, along with more than 140 aircraft, 60 ships and submarines.
The exercises will begin in mid-October with aerial combat drills in Italy before shifting to land and amphibious combat exercises in Spain and Portugal in early November. The alliance agreed to hold this exercise at its 2012 summit in Chicago, before Russia invaded Ukraine and put NATO on high alert.
The exercise will test the alliance militaries against a range of threats, including Afghanistan-type scenarios, cyber attacks, ballistic missile defense and a humanitarian crisis.
“We tried to inject the hybrid approach,” Paloméros said.
The drill include scenarios that NATO forces could face: fighting better-equipped and more traditional militaries, like Russia. Air defense and anti-access drills are parts of the exercise.
“Those are very demanding risks and threats that we have to face almost all around the globe because a lot of countries are putting a lot of money to reinvest in their defense,” Paloméros said. “We must take that into account in the NATO equation.”
Europe’s southern border and migrant trafficking from Africa and the Middle East has been a major concern of the NATO brass in recent years. Today, Austria found the decomposing bodies of dozens of suspected migrants in a truck, the New York Times reported. Military officials fear militants could find their way into Europe though these types of smuggling operations.
“In our vision of the future, we thought the south was really concerning,” Paloméros Paloméros said.
The French general, who is retiring in coming weeks after more than 40 years in the military, touted previous NATO training for allowing some alliance members to rapidly and easily coordinate with one another during the airstrike campaign against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.
