Pope Francis: Christmas a ‘Charade’ This Year Because ‘Whole World Is at War’

Pope Francis told churchgoers that Christmas this year is going to be a “charade” because “the whole world is at war.”
The pontiff put this holiday season in perspective during mass at the Basilica di Santa Maria last week. His speech comes after a rash of notable violent incidents, including the now infamous terrorist attacks in Paris, as “we are close to Christmas. There will be lights, there will be parties, bright trees, even Nativity scenes – all decked out – while the world continues to wage war.
“It’s all a charade. The world has not understood the way of peace. The whole world is at war,” Pope Francis said. “A war can be justified, so to speak, with many, many reasons, but when all the world as it is today, at war, piecemeal though that war may be—a little here, a little there—there is no justification.”
Pope Francis also pointed to the “innocent victims” of war, calling for compassion for bystanders.
“What shall remain in the wake of this war, in the midst of which we are living now?” Pope Francis asked. “What shall remain? Ruins, thousands of children without education, so many innocent victims, and lots of money in the pockets of arms dealers.”

Mali Hotel Attack Targeted Peace Talks, Separatists Say

(BAMAKO, Mali) — The assault on a luxury hotel in Mali’s capital that killed 19 people was a clear attempt to derail a fragile peace process meant to stabilize the country’s volatile north, a representative of northern separatist groups said Sunday.
Halting peace negotiations have been dragging on between the central government and northern separatist groups for more than two years in an effort to end the disputes that turned large sections of the country into a haven for radical Islamic militants.
The talks have shown some promise in recent months. The Radisson Blu hotel attacked by two gunmen on Friday was preparing to host a meeting on implementing the latest accords.
“The attack was targeting the peace agreement,” said Sidi Brahim Ould Sidati, a representative of the Coordination of Azawad Movements, known by its French acronym CMA. The CMA is a coalition of groups seeking autonomy in northern Mali and includes ethnic Arabs and Tuaregs.
“The jihadis are in different groups but their goal is the same, and that’s to hinder implementation of the peace accord,” Sidati said.
It was the secular separatist groups that first wrested northern Mali from the government in 2012, using weapons looted from arsenals in neighboring Libya, but they were soon overtaken by al-Qaida-allied radicals.
In 2013, the French pushed the Islamic extremists out of cities and towns though they continue to carry out attacks on U.N. peacekeepers.
The peace talks between the government and the separatists excluded the radicals, who have spoken out against the negotiations, accusing participants of betraying the population’s desire for independence.
The hotel attack was claimed by the Al-Mourabitoun (The Sentinels) radical group which has links to al-Qaida. The group’s statement said attacks would continue until the government ended its “aggression against our people in the north and the center of Mali.”
Senegalese President Macky Sall, current chairman of the West African ECOWAS bloc, visited Bamako on Sunday and went to the Radisson with Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. At a joint press conference early Sunday evening, Sall said a regional meeting to discuss security concerns would be convened in the coming days, though he provided no details.
Friday’s attack began at around 7 a.m., when two gunmen armed with assault rifles and explosives attacked just as guards who had worked the night shift were preparing to hand over to a new team.
The two young gunmen quickly overpowered the guards and moved into the hotel as terrified guests scrambled out of the dining room where they were having breakfast and tried to hide in the kitchen. They were armed with two Kalashnikov assault rifles, explosives and “a large amount of ammunition,” Maj. Modibo Nama Traore, a commander with the Malian army, said Sunday.
Malian troops backed by French and American forces then assaulted the hotel in a siege lasting more than seven hours that involved clearing the building floor by floor.
The timing of the attack suggested a well-planned operation that analysts said could have been an attempt by al-Qaida and its Al-Mourabitoun allies to assert its relevance amid high-profile assaults by the rival Islamic State group, including the Nov. 13 attacks on Paris that killed 130 people.
The separatists and other analysts say, however, that it could also have been an effort to derail Mali’s fragile recovery.
Jean-Herve Jezequel, with the International Crisis Group, said it was a “new element” for Al-Mourabitoun to position itself as defenders of the northern region — as though it were a national movement rather than just a terror group.
Sidati said he suspected this type of rhetoric was intended to help the extremists get as many recruits from northern Mali as possible.
In the northern Mali regions of Timbuktu and Kidal, new leaflets were distributed on Saturday warning against collaboration with the Malian army, France and the United Nations peacekeeping mission, he added.

Americans Sharpen Focus on Terrorism

Washington will be quieter than usual this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, even as Americans across the nation register heightened concerns over possible terrorist threats. VOA’s Michael Bowman reports new polling data from ABC News and the Washington Post newspaper show an electorate increasingly focused on security issues after the deadly Islamic State attacks in Paris.

Israeli Woman Fatally Stabbed in West Bank

Three Palestinians carrying out knife attacks on Israelis were killed Sunday in the occupied West Bank, Israeli police and the military said, as an eight-week-old wave of violence showed no signs of slowing.  An 21-year-old Israeli woman was stabbed to death when a Palestinian attacked her with a knife in the West Bank before being shot and killed by soldiers nearby.    In an earlier attack, the military said a woman pulled out a knife at a military base entrance and...

Israeli Woman Stabbed to Death by Palestinian in West Bank

(JERUSALEM) — A young Israeli woman was stabbed to death by a Palestinian who was among three assailants to be shot dead following separate attacks Sunday, Israeli security forces said, with the latest flare-up of violence coming ahead of a visit to the region by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
The 21-year-old Israeli woman was seriously wounded when a Palestinian attacked her with a knife in the West Bank Sunday afternoon before being shot and killed by soldiers nearby, the military said.
Dr. Ofer Merin of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem said “the young woman was stabbed numerous times in the head, chest and the area of the heart.” He said despite attempts by medics to save her, she succumbed to her wounds.
The attack occurred at the Gush Etzion junction near Jerusalem, the scene of multiple Palestinian attacks against civilians and security forces over the past two months.
In an earlier attack, the military said a woman pulled out a knife at the entrance to a military base and began approaching civilians. A local West Bank settler leader, Gershon Mesika, said he veered off the road and struck the woman with his vehicle. A soldier then fired at her and killed her. The army did not say how close the woman had been to carrying out an attack or release a video of the incident.
Her father, Taha Qatanani, said his 16-year-old daughter went to school as usual in the morning and that he heard about her death two hours later. “She talked about stabbing to her brother the day before but no one took her seriously. If she tried to stab she did what she wanted,” he said.
Elsewhere in the West Bank, a Palestinian driving a taxi cab tried to run over Israelis east of Jerusalem, police said. After crashing his car, he emerged with a knife and tried to stab people, but was shot dead by a bystander before he could harm anyone. Israeli politicians have encouraged licensed gun owners to carry their weapons during the latest wave of unrest.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended citizens for being on “maximum alert.”
“I must say that we are showing such awareness, with considerable resourcefulness and courage, and this is deserving of all praise. We are still fighting and will continue to do so,” he said at his weekly Cabinet meeting.
Sunday’s attacks came two days before Kerry is scheduled to arrive in an attempt to calm tensions stemming from a two-month wave of violence that shows no signs of dissipating. It will mark his first visit to the area to meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders in more than a year.
On Saturday night, a Palestinian attacker stabbed four people in the southern Israeli town of Kiryat Gat. Following an hourslong manhunt, police found the 18-year-old hiding in the yard of a nearby home.
Over the past two months, Palestinian stabbings and other attacks have killed 18 Israelis, while 87 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire. Of them, 55 are said by Israel to be attackers and the rest were killed in clashes with Israeli troops.
The wave of violence began over tensions surrounding a sensitive Jerusalem holy site and has since spread across Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza border.
Israel says the current spate of violence is due to a Palestinian campaign of lies and incitement surrounding the holy site, which is revered by Muslims and Jews. The Palestinians say the violence is rooted in frustration over nearly a half-century of occupation and they accuse Israel of using excessive force to suppress the unrest.

Obama Warns Not to Overreact to Paris Attacks

(KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia) — Trying to reassure a nation on edge, President Barack Obama said Sunday the Islamic State group “cannot strike a mortal blow” against the U.S., and he warned that overreacting to the Paris attacks would play into extremists’ hands. “We will destroy this terrorist organization,” he vowed.
Ending a trip to Asia, Obama implored Americans not to let the specter of terror cause them to compromise their values or change the way they live.
“We do not succumb to fear,” he said. “The most powerful tool we have to fight ISIL is to say that we’re not afraid, to not elevate them, to somehow buy into their fantasy that they’re doing something important,” Obama said, using an acronym for the terrorist organization.
Since IS militants killed 130 in France nine days ago, Obama’s strategy has come under repeated questioning. He dismissed the group’s global prowess of IS and said, “They’re a bunch of killers with good social media.”
Rejecting the notion of an existential threat, Obama said IS “can’t beat us on the battlefield, so they try to terrorize us into being afraid.”
“I think it is absolutely vital for every country, every leader, to send a signal that the viciousness of a handful of killers does not stop the world from doing vital business,” Obama said. The president and world leaders are set to gather in Paris next week for long-scheduled climate talks. The White House has insisted there will be no change in plans.
Obama also said there was an “increasing awareness” by Russian President Vladimir Putin that IS is Moscow’s gravest threat in the Middle East. IS claimed responsibility for downing a Russian passenger jet in Egypt last month with 224 on board.
Long before that, Obama had urged Putin to use Russia’s air campaign in Syria to target IS, not U.S.-backed rebel groups fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad, a Moscow ally. U.S. officials have said Russia has started focusing some airstrikes against IS. Obama said it was not clear whether Putin could work effectively with the U.S.-led coalition.
Putin “needs to go after the people who killed Russia’s citizens,” Obama said. The two met last week during an economic summit in Turkey.
Nearly five years of fighting between Assad and Syrian rebels has created a vacuum that allowed IS to thrive in both Syria and Iraq. More recently, the militant group has started exporting violence outside its stronghold, radiating fears across the West. U.S. officials have said IS aspires to attack America but they have played down any specific threat.
As Obama spoke in the Malaysian capital, other Western leaders were stepping up their rhetoric against IS, while the European diplomatic hub of Brussels remained under the highest threat level for the second day in a row. French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the West would “annihilate Islamic State worldwide.”
After Obama’s return to Washington early Monday, he will prepare for a White House meeting with French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday, where the leaders will discuss bolstering the international coalition fighting IS. Hollande then goes to Russia for similar talks with Putin.
U.S.-led military efforts come amid parallel talks about a diplomatic solution to end Syria’s civil war. The violence has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced millions, leading to a migrant crisis in Europe and intense concerns in the U.S. about Obama’s plan to take in thousands of Syrian refugees.
U.S. lawmakers are pushing legislation to tighten screening requirements for Syrian refugees; some Republican presidential candidates want to halt their entry. In Turkey and the Philippines last week, Obama pushed back on those proposals as un-American, drawing criticism from some who said he failed to grasp Americans’ post-Paris fears.
The president has since softened his tone. His administration tried to convince U.S. House members that the refugee screening process was sufficient, and Obama began entertaining a U.S. Senate proposal to deny visa waivers to recent visitors to Iraq and Syria. That program lets foreigners enter the U.S. without visas from 38 countries for short stays.
“The American people are right to be concerned,” Obama said Sunday. Still, he said there’s a difference between vigilance and surrendering to fears “that lead us to abandon our values, to abandon how we live.”
Obama’s insistence that Americans not be terrorized carried echoes of the weeks and months after the Sept. 11 attacks, which brought significant changes to U.S. air travel, civil liberties law and views about Muslims in the U.S. Then, as in now, leaders asked Americans not to “let the terrorists win.”
“Our nation was horrified, but it’s not going to be terrorized,” President George W. Bush declared five days after those attacks. “We’re a nation that can’t be cowed by evil-doers.”
Obama brought up the 9/11 analogy when he answered questions at a news conference Sunday. He said the U.S. had survived mass casualties before and pointed out that New York’s Times Square was again filled with people — “rightly so.”
“I was very proud of the fact that the fundamental nature of America and how we treated each other did not change,” Obama said. “We’ve made some bad decisions subsequent to that attack in part based on fear, and that’s why we have to be cautious.”

Chuck Hagel on Fighting Islamic State: ‘There Is No Military Solution’

Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said Sunday that it was his and former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey’s opinion that “there is no military solution” to defeating the Islamic State terrorist organization.
Appearing on State of the Union with Jake Tapper, Hagel delved into the secret memo he sent last year criticizing the Obama administration’s handling of Middle East policy. A source at the timesuggested Hagel had internal disagreements with White House policy on Iraq and Syria, and Hagel would up resigning just weeks after the Democrats were routed in the 2014 midterm elections.
Hagel said Islamic State presented a “complicated” problem and the U.S. needed to sort out whether Assad or IS was the enemy.
“First, I think everyone understands what we are up against in the world today,” Hagel said. “ISIS and all the different elements of terrorism and dynamics and historic differences and challenges and threats is complicated … There are no easy, simple solutions, regardless of some who appear to have very glib, quick solutions.
“Second, I always felt that we needed to more clearly define our political strategy, along with our military strategy, because it’s my opinion, it certainly was the opinion of the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marty Dempsey, he can speak for himself, but it was our opinion that there is no military solution to this. We are up against an ideology. We are up against a reality of dynamics, a set of dynamics we’ve never seen before. Sophistication of social media, the military prowess, the tactical, strategic prowess that ISIS possesses, the funding. So we should more clearly define what is our political strategy. What are our priorities? Who is the enemy here? Is Assad the enemy or is ISIS the enemy?”
“Do you think that we should not have Assad as our designated enemy right now? We should focus on ISIS?” Tapper asked.
“Well, Assad is a very bad guy,” Hagel said. “There are bad guys all over the world, but I think it’s pretty clear that ISIS represents the real threat to our country, to the world. I said so 15 months ago in a press conference when I was asked about ISIS … Assad has to be dealt with, but you can’t confuse your allies and your adversaries by saying Assad must go.”
Hagel said the main complaint of his memo was that the Obama administration had not defined its “political strategy” about addressing the Syrian regime.

Brokaw: Obama Has Shown ‘Benign Neglect’ Toward Islamic State

NBC News special correspondent Tom Brokaw accused President Obama of demonstrating “benign neglect” toward the expansion of the Islamic State terrorist organization Sunday on Meet The Press.
This comes after a week in which Obama received sharp criticism from across the political spectrum for his response to the Paris terrorist attacks carried out by IS, as well as his insistence that he had the “right strategy” to fight the organization and that IS was “contained.”Obama grew impatient with reporters when asked repeatedly about his earlier underestimations of IS and whether he knew the right way to destroy the organization.
“The fact is, that the president with what I would call kind of benign neglect about the continuing expansion of ISIS, the more sophistication [sic] of it all the time, has to come to a halt,” Brokaw said.
Brokaw, a longtime NBC anchor and now a frequent panelist on many network programs, grew blunt as the show drew to a close.
“I don’t want this broadcast to end without all of us dealing with a new reality,” Brokaw said. “We’re at war. Paris has changed the place of America in this war against ISIS, and it is now a war. It’s not going to be a ground war, with the United States sending in 20 to 40,000 troops up against ISIS. It’s very complicated. We’re going to have a greater presence in Iraq to protect the Iraqi government so it doesn’t fall.”
Brokaw said the U.S. would have to deploy more special forces in Iraq to go against ISIS, as well as control the aerospace without much help from its European allies.
