British Member of Parliament Calls Obama ‘Splendidly Arrogant,’ a ‘Funny Fellow’

A Conservative Member of Parliament called Barack Obama “splendidly arrogant” and “a funny fellow” in a speech on Tuesday following the president’s calls for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union.
“It’s so splendidly arrogant for him to think that poor little Blighty is just waiting for big old Uncle Sam to come and tell us what we should do with our European neighbors and which garden we should play in,” said the Right Hon. Jacob Rees-Mogg, who represents North East Somerset in Parliament.
“No true honest Briton is going to be told what to do by a Yankee president,” Rees-Mogg added. “He can come and tell us all he likes about what we should do, but we’re not an American colony, and they’re not a colony of ours anymore.”
Rees-Mogg’s comments about Obama follow recent remarks in which he referred to Secretary of State John Kerry, who has also urged Britain to continue its membership in the European Union, as a “terrorist sympathizer.”
Rees-Mogg, a colorful and outspoken figure, especially on issues related to the European Union, set the record for the longest word ever used on the floor of the House of Commons in 2012 when he encouraged his colleagues to join him in the “floccinaucinihilipilification” of the European Court of Justice. The Chambers Dictionary defines floccinaucinihilipilification as “setting at little or no value.”

U.S. Involvement in ISIS Fight Evolves With Creation of Marine Fire Base

The U.S. military has established a Marine fire base, known as Fire Base Bell, in northern Iraq that serves as the first independent U.S. military position in the battle against ISIS and could be used for offensive operations against the terror group in the future.
The Washington Post reports:
Fire Base Bell hearkens back to the United States’ older wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, where small outposts with names like Fire Base Phoenix and Combat Outpost Turbett were ubiquitous and where the creation of yet one more would only be noticed by the enemy and the troops that had to fill the sandbags. Yet in the fight against the Islamic State, the creation of a U.S. outpost indicates a noteworthy development in a battle that is largely fought from the skies. … Pentagon officials have insisted that the Marine fire base there is for “force protection” of the Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the region. Yet as Iraqi forces push the Islamic State from strongholds such as Ramadi and Hit in Anbar province with the help of U.S. artillery, it takes little imagination to see that Fire Base Bell represents an additional offensive capability for future operations in the lead up to and eventual battle for Mosul.
The existence of the fire base was first reported after Marine Staff Sgt. Louis Cardin was killed there in an ISIS rocket attack on Saturday. CNN, citing an unnamed defense official, reported that the Pentagon had planned to publicly acknowledge the fire base this week.
The fire base is located near Makhmour and approximately 50 miles from of Mosul, which functions as ISIS’ capital in Iraq.
The small artillery base is being manned by a detachment of the Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, who began moving into the area two weeks ago and had finished setting up their artillery just days prior to Saturday’s attack. A defense official told Fox News that the count of Marines at Fire Base Bell is close to 180.
Several Marines were injured in the rocket attack that killed Cardin on Saturday. The fire base again came under attack from ISIS on Monday, though no American service members were killed or wounded in the latest attack.
The Pentagon expects that ISIS specifically targeted the Marines in the attack over the weekend and that such attacks will continue.

Bombs underline Brussels' status as a center of Islamist extremism

The carnage in Brussels exposed the extent to which Belgium has become the Western hub of a terrorist threat that has spread from the Islamic State's strongholds in Syria across the Middle East and deep into Europe.

Obama: US will go after the Islamic State group aggressively

A day after bombs ripped through Brussels, President Barack Obama declared Wednesday that fighting the Islamic State is his "No. 1 priority" and blasted Republican calls for surveillance of Muslim neighborhoods as counterproductive and contrary to U.S. values.

Obama Annoyed at Question About His ISIS Policy: ‘I’ve Got a Lot of Things on My Plate’

President Obama sighed audibly at a question about his policy toward the Islamic State terrorist organization on Wednesday. The president said he had a “lot of things on my plate,” but that defeating ISIS remained his top priority.
Associated Press reporter Josh Lederman asked Obama if the Brussels attack would lead him to reconsider his policy.
“You’ve resisted calls to alter your strategy for fighting the Islamic State, and you’ve said that your critics aren’t offering any better ideas,” AP reporter Josh Lederman said. “But the attacks keep happening. Did Brussels change anything for you, and if not, would you like to—do you think that Americans should see more attacks as being inevitable?”
After Lederman completed the other parts of his question, including one about Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) calling for increased surveillance of Muslims, Obama sighed before answering.
“Josh, I think it is important to recognize that this is my number one priority,” Obama said. “I’ve got a lot of things on my plate, but my top priority is to defeat ISIL and to eliminate the scourge of this barbaric terrorism that’s been taking place around the world. We see high-profile attacks in Europe, but they’re also killing Muslims throughout the Middle East, people who are innocent, people who are guilty only of worshiping Islam in a different way than this organization.”
Obama devoted 51 seconds to the terror attack in Brussels that killed at least 31 people on Tuesday before returning to his prepared remarks about U.S.-Cuban relations. He later attended a baseball game with Cuban leader Raul Castro before flying to Argentina.

Europe Is Again at War

It’s time to admit the extent of Europe’s problem with Islamic radicalism. This isn’t mere terrorism any longer, this is guerrilla war.
It has happened again. Jihadists have struck in the heart of Europe, spreading terror while murdering dozens and maiming hundreds of innocents. Yesterday’s coordinated attacks on Brussels have woken Europeans, yet again, to the threat that exists in their midst—a grave danger politicians seem to have no idea how to handle.
The bombings at Zaventem airport and the Brussels metro at current count killed 31 and injured 270—over 300 casualties in all. Belgium is not accustomed to such a bloodbath. Its army contingent in Afghanistan suffered only 15 casualties, with just one killed, during that U.S.-led war. It’s been over 60 years since Belgians died violently in any numbers. Their battalion serving in Korea lost 101 killed and 478 wounded in action between 1950 and 1953. This is a distant memory today.
Belgium is a small country. Relative to population, this would be equivalent to 900 dead Americans and a staggering 7,800 wounded. To say nothing of the symbolism of yesterday’s attack on the metro near Maelbeek station in downtown Brussels, right next to the offices of the European Union. Striking at the very heart of the European project, revealing its vulnerability to even a handful of ardent madmen, sends a powerful message that nobody can miss.

Russian commandos carrying out operations in Syria, top general says

March 23, 2016, 8:42 PM (IDT)
The commander of the Russian forces in Syria, Col. Gen. Alexander Dvornikov, said in an interview published Wednesday that Russian commandos are carrying out special operations on Syrian soil, together with the Syrian army, and have engaged in intelligence-gathering operations to pinpoint targets for airstrikes by the Russian air force. He also said that the Syrian army is advancing toward the town of Palmyra held by ISIS, and that the capture of the town would open the way to Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor and the Iraqi border.

Report: ISIS Trained At Least 400 Attackers to Terrorize Europe

Terror group ISIS has reportedly trained more than 400 fighters operating in cells to launch attacks targeting Europe.
The Associated Press, citing European and Iraqi intelligence officials and a French lawmaker, reported that the terror group behind the attacks in Paris and, most recently, Brussels has trained between 400 and 600 operatives to carry out external attacks. The officials indicated that the fighters were trained in camps located in Syria, Iraq, and possibly the former Soviet bloc.
The report comes one day after the coordinated attacks in Brussels, which killed at least 31 people and wounded some 250 others at the international airport in Zaventem and metro station in Maelbeek.
A European security official said that the attack units appear to be led by French speakers with connections to North Africa, France, and Belgium.
“The difference is that in 2014, some of these IS fighters were only being given a couple weeks of training,” the official said, using another name for ISIS. “Now the strategy has changed. Special units have been set up. The training is longer. And the objective appears to no longer be killing as many people as possible but rather to have as many terror operations as possible, so the enemy is forced to spend more money or more in manpower. It’s more about the rhythm of terror operations now.”
Days before the bombings in Brussels, Belgian authorities captured Salah Abdeslam, a key suspect in the Paris terror attacks that killed 130 people in November. Abdeslam fled Paris for Brussels following the earlier attacks, returning to his former neighborhood of Molenbeek.
French Senator Nathalie Goulet, one of the officials who estimated the count of ISIS operatives trained for external attacks, suggested that Tuesday’s attacks were launched in response to Abdeslam’s arrest.
“Not only did he drop out of sight, but he did so to organize another attack, with accomplices everywhere. With suicide belts. Two attacks organized just like in Paris. And his arrest, since they knew he was going to talk, it was a response: So what if he was arrested? ‘We’ll show you that it doesn’t change a thing,’” Goulet, who helps head a commission tracking jihadi networks, said.
A top Iraqi intelligence official indicated that the operatives belonging to the cell responsible for the Paris attacks have moved throughout Germany, Britain, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden.
The terror attacks Tuesday forced Belgium to issue a maximum threat level and put particular emphasis on transportation hubs, airports, and stations. France has been in a state of emergency since the coordinated attacks in Paris.

International Crisis Group: Russia Deliberately ‘Exported’ Jihadis to Middle East

On March 16, the International Crisis Group (ICG) presented a report titled “The North Caucasus Insurgency and Syria: An Exported Jihad?” According to the ICG, the Russian security services opened the borders to allow radicals from the North Caucasus to travel freely to the Middle East in 2013–2014. Thus, in the lead-up to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Moscow to an extent resolved its insurgency problem in the North Caucasus. After the Olympics, in the second half of 2014, the Russian government passed tough laws against unwanted mercenaries that practically barred rebels from returning home without facing serious repercussions. As a result of the Russian government’s maneuvering, the radicals were supposed to stay outside Russia, which, in turn, would help Moscow in dealing with the few remaining militants in the North Caucasus (Crisisgroup.org, March 16).
The ICG’s report claims to explain how and why the Russian authorities managed to avoid violent attacks during the Olympics in Sochi, in 2014. In addition, the level of violence in the North Caucasus also dropped in the past two years, so Moscow has partially resolved the radicalization issue in the region. For example, there were 258 victims of insurgency-related violence (both killed and wounded) in 2015, a more than two-fold decline from the previous year, when there were 525 victims (Kavkazsky Uzel, February 10). However, it is unclear how sustainable that effect will be. Many militants have already returned from the Middle East to the North Caucasus. The Islamic State (IS) has also coopted the majority of former members of the once most powerful insurgent group in the region, the Caucasus Emirate. Russia now has to deal with the IS in the North Caucasus even though no massive influx of IS fighters from abroad has taken place.
After President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly announced the withdrawal of Russian forces from Syria, some Russian analysts were hoping that the IS would stop targeting Russia. However, a well-known Russian expert on Islam of Dagestani origin, Ahmed Yarlykapov, warned that the IS is likely to continue targeting Russia regardless of the change of policy in Syria. Yarlykapov said that recent attacks by a rebel group affiliated with the IS in southern Dagestan indicated how serious the threat is. He said the government should avoid cracking down on Muslim groups simply because it does not like them. Instead of dividing Muslims into “good” and “bad,” he said, the government should distance itself equally from all Muslim groups and fight only those that are aggressive and truly radical (Kavkazskaya Politika, March 17) The ICG also suggests that the Russian authorities should protect moderate Muslim clerics. However, a recent attack on the Ingush Salafist cleric Khamzat Chumakov indicates that Moscow’s approach toward religious figures it does not fully control remains quite harsh (Kavkazsky Uzel, March 16).
The Russian government appears to be acting contrary to what the experts are urging. On March 10, following a controversial trial in Moscow, the authorities sentenced six Dagestani nationals to lengthy prison terms. Prosecutors said that the group had planned terrorist attacks in 2014, learning how to make improvised explosive devices (IED) and buying the necessary equipment. However, their lawyer claimed the investigators found fingerprints on the IED that did not belong to any of the suspects. The suspects also had no address in their browsing history of the website they allegedly accessed to obtain the information on making IEDs. A friend of the suspects told the newspaperKommersant that all six individuals came from three small villages in Dagestan’s Khiva district and were related to each other. Moreover, the suspects were apparently related to one of the most notorious insurgent leaders in southern Dagestan, Gasan Abdullaev (a.k.a. Abu Yasir), who is known for a failed attempt to derail a high-speed train in the Moscow region back in 2011. He also allegedly recruited and used suicide bombers. The police reportedly have been hunting for Abdullaev for the past seven years and carried out dozens of special operations targeting him and his group. Having failed to catch Abdullaev, the Dagestani police reportedly took revenge on his relatives by providing some compromising information on them to the Russian authorities (Kommersant, March 11).
After Russian authorities “exported” part of southwestern Russia’s rebel population to the Middle East, the security situation in the North Caucasus evidently improved. An additional “benefit” for Russia was that the North Caucasian militants contributed to the havoc in the Middle East, which in turn helped create the European refugee crisis. However, it is unclear whether the Russian government will now be able to keep the hardened North Caucasian militants out of the country. Depending on the situation in the Middle East, some of the militants may want to return home. Militants from abroad may also support the North Caucasian branch of the IS, which makes the Russian strategy of exporting militants to the Middle East a shortsighted policy.

Vietnamese Blogger Sentenced for Allegedly Anti-Government Posts

A Vietnam court on Wednesday handed down prison sentences for a prominent blogger and his assistant for publishing articles critical of the government. Nguyen Huu Vinh, 60, and Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy, 35, were sentenced to five and three years respectively for "abusing democratic freedoms to infringe on the interests of the state," under Article 258 of the Penal Code. Both had been detained since their arrests in 2014. Prosecutors said a series of articles Vinh posted on his blog gave a distorted, one-sided view of the ruling Communist Party that would affect the people's confidence in its leaders. Tran Quoc Thuan, one of Vinh’s attorneys, told VOA's Vietnamese service that the trial in Hanoi was "extremely abnormal" and "shocked the lawyers." "We’ve pointed out that there were serious violations" in the proceedings, from Vinh's arrest to the investigation of his case, Thuan said. "In one example, Lieutenant General Hoang Kong Tu, head of the investigation agency whose name was in the list of 'victims,' was the one who headed the investigation process. "There were violations in the process of collecting evidence," he added. "Evidence presented was illegal and the accusations were groundless. According to the laws, a verdict is based on what is stated in the indictment and what has been debated at the trial. Here in this case, there were some extra [charges] added to the verdict by the judge himself. A verdict based on those abnormalities is abnormal." 'Public' trial Representatives from foreign embassies were not allowed to enter the courtroom, although the trial was listed as public, which Thuan described as a "contrast it is between theory and reality when it comes to Vietnam’s human rights." Vinh, also known as Anh Ba Sam, created the blog "Ba Sam" in 2007. The blog provided links to stories from state-run news outlets, as well as blog posts from activists. Prior to sentencing, dozens of Vinh's supporters gathered outside the courthouse in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi to demand his release. Blogger Nguyen Lan Thang, a well-known social activist campaigning for the removal of Article 258, was among the crowd. "Today's trial was just like many other dissidents’ trials. There was harassment preventing people from attending the so-called public trial; some people were arrested; protesters were extremely outraged with the verdict," he said. "We are very upset with the behavior of the Vietnamese authorities. They view us as enemies and make every attempt to repress us, from physical assaults to imprisonment. Today’s verdict is one of the injustices we are suffering and we will continue to press our fight for basic rights." Karim Lahidji, president of the International Federation for Human Rights, called the verdict "all the more concerning because it could signal a new wave of repression as new party leaders assume control." Human rights groups have criticized Vietnam for arbitrarily arresting bloggers and activists for peacefully expressing their views. This report was produced in collaboration with VOA's Vietnamese Service.

Batman vs Superman: Huge Comics Collection to Go on Tour

Batman and Superman may face off in an upcoming movie blockbuster, but copies of the superheroes' first outings dating back almost 80 years are going on display in a new exhibition of original DC Comics books. The single-owner "Impossible Collection (DC Chapter)" features more than 1,000 DC classics, many hugely valuable, and is said to have taken over 16 years to assemble. It includes the "highest graded copy" of Superman's debut in "Action Comics No. 1" from 1938, as well as "Detective 27" where Batman made his first appearance in 1939. The collection, previewed to media Wednesday in London ahead of a global tour later this year, belongs to Ayman Hariri, the son of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005. "I think people have a respect ... for these books and the characters that they represent," Hariri told Reuters. "Each book has a very good representation of what was going on in the world at the time." Hariri said he began collecting Superman comics on a wide scale after his father's death, inspired by a picture of the senior Hariri drawn as the superhero, which is also on display at the exhibition. When asked about the value of the coveted "Action Comics No. 1," he declined to give a price. "'Action Comics (No.) 1' is when Superman first appeared and the day before that, there was no Superman," he said. "I don't think anyone could possibly imagine a world without Superman." Superman will be flying onto cinema screens this week in the blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill as the two caped heroes.
