Sunday Is Mother's Day

Sunday is Mother's Day in the U.S. and scores of countries around the world. Mother's Day is a time to celebrate and appreciate all the work women do. Families traditionally give their mothers flowers and a fancy dinner to commemorate the day. U.S. President Barack Obama honored his wife Michelle in his weekly address, thanking her "for the remarkable way she does the most important job: being a mom." While the U.S. Congress made Mother's Day an official holiday in 1914, Obama urged the current legislative body to pass more substantial measures to honor women, starting with several of his administration's initiatives. 'Give it meaning' "If Congress can make a holiday, surely they can back it up with the things that give it meaning," Obama said. "That includes paid maternity and paternity leave, sick leave, accommodations for workers who are pregnant, good health care, affordable child care, flexibility at work, equal pay, and a decent minimum wage. We ask our mothers to do more than their fair share of just about everything. Making sure that they're treated fairly is the least we can do," the president added. Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day in 1908, began the effort as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers make for their children. Jarvis had originally envisioned Mother's Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. However, when the day became an official holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other merchants pounced to capitalize on the day's  popularity. Jarvis was disgusted and disowned the holiday before her death in 1948. She had even lobbied the government to remove the holiday from the American calendar. But Mother's Day persists. It is one of the most popular holidays and one of the biggest for consumer spending. WATCH: President Obama on Mother's Day

Massive Canadian Wildfire Remains 'Out of Control'

The ferocious forest fire raging through a community in Canada's Alberta province doubled in size Saturday, engulfing 200,000 hectares. The blaze has forced the evacuation of the city of Fort McMurray. The Canadian government has also declared a state of emergency in Alberta. Emergency officials said it could take months to bring the fire under control. "This remains a big, out-of-control, dangerous fire," Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said. The Alberta Emergency Management Agency said more than 500 firefighters, using 15 helicopters, 14 air tankers and 88 other pieces of equipment, are battling the blaze in and around Fort McMurray. Rain showers are predicted in the coming days, but authorities said that will not help. "We need heavy rain," said Alberta Fire Service Director Chad Morrison. "Showers are not enough." Despite firefighters' efforts, Morrison said the blaze in Alberta's oil sands region will not go out until there is significant rain. The province is home to one of the world's most lucrative oil industries. Investigators are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the fires. More than 1,100 firefighters are battling 49 blazes across the western Canadian province -- seven of them are totally out-of-control. To deal with the needs of all affected communities Alberta Premier Rachel Notley started a recovery task force that is set to guide officials during the restoration. The Edmonton Journal reported that on Friday, the cabinet allocated $200 million toward a disaster recovery program for the area and financial relief of $1,250 per adult and $500 for each dependent. More than 80,000 people have been evacuated from Fort McMurray.

Delegate Count Pushes Clinton Closer to Democratic Nomination

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton inched closer to the party nomination with a caucus win Saturday in Guam. Clinton won 60 percent of the vote, earning four of the seven delegates on the tiny Pacific island nation. Her rival, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won three delegates. However, Sanders picked up nearly 50 delegates in Washington state. He easily won the state caucus on March 26, beating Clinton by nearly 50 percentage points – 73 percent to 27 percent. He received 25 of the 34 delegates awarded that day. However, an additional 67 district-level delegates could not be apportioned until the state could produce vote data broken down by congressional district. Similar to other states, Washington state has a multi-step process for awarding delegates. Election officials had to wait until county conventions were completed May 1 before they could generate more detailed information. Nearly 50 delegates District-level data show Sanders will receive 49 delegates, and Clinton will receive 18, The Associated Press reported. Despite the Washington results, Clinton maintains a lead in the overall delegate count with 2,228 delegates. She has more than 93 percent of the 2,383 delegates needed to win the nomination. Sanders has 1,454. Former secretary of state Clinton is on track to clinch the nomination by early June. Sanders has said he has no plans to quit before the final primary votes have been cast in June. Yet Clinton is already looking ahead to a matchup in November with billionaire businessman Donald Trump, the sole Republican presidential candidate. The Democratic convention will be held in Philadelphia July 25-28. The Republican convention will be held a week earlier in Cleveland, from July 18-21. Name calling Meanwhile, Trump repeatedly spoke of "Crooked Hillary" - his nickname for the Democratic front-runner - during rallies this weekend in Oregon and Washington state. He also continued a tirade against Senator Elizabeth Warren, a leader in the progressive movement. On Wednesday, soon after Ted Cruz and John Kasich dropped out of the race for president leaving Trump as the sole candidate on the Republican side, Warren took to Twitter to chastise Trump in a flurry of nine tweets in which she accused him of being racist, sexist and xenophobic. Warren, revered among progressive Democrats for her work in creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, went on to accuse Trump of inciting violence among his supporters and supporting Russia’s strong-man President Vladimir Putin. On Friday night, Trump responded to Warren’s criticism with a stream of his own tweets, referring to Warren as “Hillary Clinton’s flunky,” and saying that her career is “based on a lie.” Trump was referencing Warren’s controversial claim that she is part Native American, which first became an issue in 2012 when Warren was running for the Senate in the state of Massachusetts. During that campaign, it was reported that Warren claimed Native American heritage while applying to teach at both the Harvard Law School and the Pennsylvania Law School. Warren has long defended her Native American ancestry as based on stories told to her as a child by her parents, but has produced no official documentation to make the connection. Warren responded to Trump’s attack Friday night, calling him a bully and saying his statements were “hate-filled lies.” Some material for this report came from AP.

Three Journalists Kidnapped in Syria Return to Spain

Three Spanish journalists who had been kidnapped in Syria nearly a year ago returned home to Spain Sunday, the Spanish government said. The three journalists, Antonio Pampliega, Jose Manuel Lopez and Angel Sastre, went missing in last July near the northwest city of Aleppo. They had all been working for different Spanish media outlets covering the fighting at the time. The trio flew Sunday from Turkey to a Spanish air base near Madrid onboard a Defense Ministry aircraft. Intervention by the Turkish and Qatari governments and “other allies and friends” greatly aided in winning the reporters’ freedom, according to a government statement. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the reporters were travelling in a van in a rebel-controlled area outside Aleppo on July 13, 2015, when they were stopped and abducted by armed men. All three of the journalists were experienced war zone correspondents and had all reported from Syria in the past. According to Reporters Without Borders, a media rights group, Syria is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists. In 2014, three other Spanish journalists, working for the El Mundo newspaper, were released after being taken prisoner by Islamic State extremists for six months. In the two months following the Spanish reporters’ release, the same group killed two U.S. journalists, James Foley and Steven Sotloff. WATCH: Related video of journalists' release

Putin Now Pursuing ‘Hybrid Peace’ in Ukraine’s Donbas, Oreshkin Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, May 8 – Having given the world a lesson in the effectiveness of “hybrid war” in the case of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin is now pursuing policies which can best be described as “hybrid peace,” Dmitry Oreshkin says; and just as the adjective concealed what he was doing in the former, it is again having the same effect in the latter.

On the Apostrophe portal yesterday, the Russian commentator argues that it is obvious that “Putin does not want and cannot annex this territory. In fact, he never promised to do this: he doesn’t have the money or the desire” and sees keeping it “formally” within Ukraine working for him (apostrophe.com.ua/article/politics/foreign-policy/2016-05-07/putin-gotovit-donbassu-gibridnyiy-mir/4824).

“On the other hand,” Oreshkin points out, “the worse things are with the Russian economy, the more Moscow needs some kind of symbolic victory” because it “must mobilize disappointed people” and because three times, in Chechnya, Georgia and then in Crimea, “war already has rescued Putin.”

Some expected Putin to be able to use Syria in the same way, but the commentator suggests that the Kremlin leader has sufficient “’wisdom’” to recognize that this is impossible. And so for the time being in the Donbas, “’a hybrid war’” is going to be replaced by “’a hybrid peace.’”

But because that is so in Ukraine, it is all too likely that Putin is looking around for somewhere else where he can get a victory, especially to those places where his early wars did not achieve all that he or the Russian high command wanted in the past.   The most likely of these is in the Caucasus, Oreshkin suggests.

The commentator says that he has no doubt that Russia was behind Yerevan’s recent moves in the direction of recognizing Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state, especially since the Russian military is overwhelmingly pro-Armenian and anti-Azerebaijani, given Russia’s tensions with Turkey.

Moscow declares its neutrality and say both Yerevan and Baku are partners, but that is for public consumption.  Armenia is far more reliant on Moscow than Baku is, and “without Russian support, Armenia could not fight with Azerbaijan,” which is far stronger militarily and economically.

Oreshkin says that he believes that Russian siloviki are now “developing many scenarios” for the Caucasus. First of all, they are asking what should be done with Armenia.  When Russia  invaded Georgia in 2008, it failed to solve its strategic task of establishing a land corridor through Georgia to Armenia, forcing Moscow to supply its troops there only by air.

For many Russian military commanders, that is unacceptable and unfinished business, something Putin certainly knows.

The same thing is true regarding Transdniestria, which is ever more being forced by “objective conditions” to turn away from Moscow and toward the EU, Oreshkin says, adding ominously that “in the Russian general staff, this is viewed as a challenge” that Moscow should be responding to.
