U.S. Remains the World’s Sole Superpower

The United States remains the world’s sole military superpower and the majority of Americans want to keep it that way despite the public’s desire to scale back force, according to a new study.
More than half—55 percent—of individuals reported that they support policies that maintain the U.S.’s global military status, a Pew Research Center study revealed Thursday.
Compare that to roughly a third—36 percent—who responded that it would be acceptable if another nation, such as China or the European Union, exceeded the U.S.’s military strength.
Despite dismal projections from politicians and pundits barraging the U.S.’s military status, Pew Research reported that America is still the only nation in the world that has the capacity to intervene nearly anywhere.
While the study found partisan differences, a majority in both parties said the U.S. should back policies that preserve its military status. Two-thirds of Republicans favored policies aimed at upholding the U.S. as the only superpower while 50 percent of Democrats said the same.
Interestingly, though most Americans favored retaining the nation’s military rank, a majority—57 percent—said they wanted the U.S. to “deal with its own problems and let other countries deal with their problems the best they can.” A mere 37 percent meanwhile favored U.S. intervention.

Continetti: Republican Base Now Is ‘Largely Trump Supporters’

Washington Free Beacon editor Matthew Continetti said Thursday on MSNBC that Donald Trump’s response to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s ambivalence about supporting him was the right one, adding the GOP base now largely consists of Trump supporters.
Ryan (R., Wis.) told CNN earlier Thursday that he was not yet prepared to endorse Trump, despite the billionaire’s status as presumptive Republican presidential nominee. In response, Trump released a statement saying he was not ready to support Ryan’s agenda either, adding, “Perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement about what is best for the American people. They have been treated so badly for so long that it is about time for politicians to put them first!”
“I thought it was the right response coming from Trump,” Continetti said. “He didn’t call Paul Ryan ‘Tall Paul’ or make up some other [nickname] … He did the best that Trump can probably do in not burning any bridges. I would say Paul Ryan’s answer was pretty good, too, to the inevitable question that all Republicans and conservatives get, ‘Do you support Trump?’ He said, well, not yet, he has to prove it to me.”
Meet The Press Daily host Chuck Todd said Ryan’s maneuver was meant to provide cover to House Republicans who may have no choice politically but to “dump Trump.”
Todd later asked Continetti what the Republican base was right now.
“Well, I think it’s largely Trump supporters,” Continetti said. “I think a lot of the Republican mainstream vote is going to coalesce around [Trump.]”
“Voters are moving to Trump faster than the leaders,” Todd said.
“That’s right, and not all the leaders are going to be with them in the end,” Continetti said. “There will be some who just won’t be able to support Donald Trump for whatever reason, but I think the majority of Republicans will be for Trump in November, so that’s the Republican base is the party of Trump. It’s not the GOP that we’ve come to know.”

Republican Leaders Show Reluctance to Back Trump

Billionaire businessman Donald Trump may have garnered enough votes in the primaries to become the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee, but he can't seem to transfer that enthusiasm from the voting booth to the party leadership. According to The Wall Street Journal, only 12 of the 300 Republicans serving in the House and Senate, and three of the 31 Republican governors, have endorsed the New York businessman for the presidency. The party's last two White House occupants, George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush, said they would sit out the 2016 campaign and not even comment on it. The party's last two losing presidential nominees, Arizona Senator John McCain in 2008 and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in 2012, both said they, like the Bushes, also planned to skip the party's July national convention, where Trump will be officially nominated. On Thursday, the highest-ranking Republican officeholder, House Speaker Paul Ryan, said he was not ready to support Trump as the nominee. Ryan previously criticized Trump for saying that if he did not win the nomination, his supporters might riot at the national convention. Ryan said he hoped the party would be unified by this summer, "but I think a lot of the burden is on the presumptive nominee to do that, and so we'll see." Other Republican heavyweights went even further than Ryan. Mark Salter, an adviser to McCain’s 2008 campaign, said on Twitter that he would rather vote for presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton than for Trump. Conservative pundit Ben Howe did the same. Another long-standing Trump critic, South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, said on Twitter: “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed … and we will deserve it.”
