Navy SEALS Unload on ISIS in What White House Says is Not Combat

A new video purportedly shows Navy SEALS engaged in a firefight with ISIS forces in Iraq despite Obama administration officials insisting American forces are only serving in a non-combat role.
The video posted on Wednesday by World Conflict Films claims to show an engagement that occurred in the town of Tel Skuf, near the city of Mosul. The battle happened after ISIS fighters overwhelmed the town’s Christian militia, according to the poster.
“Not wanting ISIS to secure an entrenched foothold on the town, the elite Peshmerga Counter Terror Unit (CTU) accompanied by their Navy SEAL advisers, acted quickly by counterattacking the village, killing dozens upon dozens of Islamic State militants,” World Conflict Films said in its description of the video. “The SEALs and the CTU were able to violently cleanse the town of ISIS, but at the expense of losing a SEAL and at least 15 Peshmerga fighters.”
World Conflict Films claimed that Apache helicopters and F-16s were also deployed during the battle.
The White House said on Wednesday that, despite the violence, American troops are not deployed in a combat capacity.
“I don’t mean to make it sound benign because it’s not, it’s dangerous,” Josh Earnest told reporters during a briefing. “What I am trying to do, though, is trying to be as precise as possible with you and the American public about what exactly our commander-in-chief has asked our service members to do,” Earnest said. “Secretary [Ash] Carter, earlier today has described his death as a combat death. That’s accurate. This is an individual who is not in a combat mission, but he was in a dangerous place and his position came under attack. He was armed, trained, and prepared to defend himself.
“Unfortunately, he was killed. He was killed in combat but that was not a part of his mission. His mission was specifically to offer advice and assistance to those Iraqi forces that were fighting for their own country.”

Obama Enlists Local Reporters to Help Dem Senate Candidates

The White House is hoping to use local reporters to advance the prospects of Democratic Senate candidates running against Republican incumbents.
President Obama hosted a handful of local journalists at the White House on Monday. Each reporter was granted four minutes with the president as well as off-the-record sessions with White House spokesman Josh Earnest and a “surprise” visit from Chief of Staff Denis McDonough. All of the invitees came from states in which Democrats hope to retake Republican-held Senate seats, including Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.
WMUR reporter Josh McElveen documented the setup in a Monday post that emphasized the political motive behind the meeting. Earnest directed the reporter’s attention to the nomination of Merrick Garland to fill the Supreme Court seat held by the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Republicans have delayed holding hearings on the nomination, saying that the Senate should wait until the November election to consider a nominee.
“I’d like to think my invite to the White House for an interview with the president is the result of being a respected, fair journalist. Or at least it’s because of my sparkling personality and quick wit,” McElveen wrote. “The fact is, every reporter in this White House holding room (they call it the Map Room) is from a state in which an incumbent Senate Republican is up for re-election. In New Hampshire, of course, that is Kelly Ayotte.”
McElveen’s brief interview began with Obama attacking Ayotte over the judicial nomination.
“I let the president say what he wanted on the topic, including a rip of Senator Ayotte (he pronounced it Aye-oat),” he wrote.
Ayotte’s opponent, Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, and liberal super PACs have made the Supreme Court nomination a key piece in their attacks against the freshman Republican. Sen. Harry Reid’s Senate Majority PAC spent $400,000 on a television ad that aired for two weeks statewide to advance the narrative.
“Donald Trump wants the Senate to delay filling the Supreme Court vacancy so he can choose the nominee next year,” the ad says. “Senator Kelly Ayotte is right there to help and Ayotte joined Trump and party bosses in refusing to consider any nominee.”
Conservative groups are attempting to counter the White House nomination in swing states. The Judicial Crisis Network has spent $500,000 to air an ad criticizing Garland’s record in Colorado, West Virginia, North Dakota, Iowa, and New Hampshire. The 30-second spot, titled “He’s No Moderate,” focuses on Garland’s record on the Second Amendment and abortion.
“The Second Amendment is at stake. Small business owners oppose him because he would harm our fragile economy. Liberals agree he’d be the deciding vote for partial birth abortion,” the ad says. “He’s no moderate.”
Ayotte responded to the president’s criticism on WMUR on Tuesday. She said that delaying the vote in an election year gives voters a voice in the process and accused President Obama of hypocrisy on judicial nominations.
“It is up to the U.S. Senate to give advice and consent. And certainly, when he was in the Senate, when he voted to filibuster Justice Alito, he understands that is the separate responsibility of the Senate,” she said. “Waiting for the elections—we are in the midst of a presidential nomination process—to have the people weigh in at the election in November is important given we have a 4-4 court.”
The Obama administration used a similar tactic in his 2012 reelection campaign, inviting influential local reporters for meetings with the president. This tactic had mixed results.

Trump's Unlikely Surge Stands Out in US Political History

Real estate titan Donald Trump's ascent to become the presumptive 2016 U.S. Republican presidential nominee is one of the most unusual in American political history. Trump, 69, has spent a life building skyscrapers in New York and elsewhere. He has erected casinos along the Atlantic Ocean; bought an airline; and peddled steaks, wine and other products, all with his name branded on them. He wrote a bestselling book about his real estate deals and hosted a television reality show where he famously told losing contestants, "You're fired!" He has through the years gleefully bragged about his sexual exploits as a New York man about town, divorced two wives and married a third — a onetime supermodel — and sired five children. He lives in a luxury building in the heart of New York, but often skips away to a palm-studded, 58-bedroom oceanfront mansion in the southeastern state of Florida that once was owned by a cereal heiress. The billionaire's surge to the top of the U.S. political scene is also rare. When Republicans formally make him the their presidential nominee at their national convention in July, it will be the first time since 1952 that a major U.S. political party has picked someone other than a previously elected official, such as a state governor or U.S. senator, to be its standard bearer. A retired World War II hero, General Dwight Eisenhower, won the U.S. presidency as a Republican in 1952 and again four years later. Candidacy dismissed Over the years, Trump has often flirted with running for the presidency, but U.S. political pundits quickly dismissed him as something of a joke, assuming he would never actually enter the nomination contest. They did so again last June when he descended an escalator at Trump Tower in New York and said he was running for the 2016 Republican Party nomination. He promptly told supporters that illegal immigration into the U.S. was out of control and that Mexico was allowing rapists and drug abusers to enter the country. Countless U.S. newspaper columnists, Republican officials and Trump's rivals for the nomination all discounted his chances, offering predictions that he would drop out of the race by a certain date or that voters would quickly reject his candidacy when voting started in state-by-state nominating contests in early February. Along the campaign trail, seasoned politicians predicted Trump's political demise as he insulted the war hero status of the party's 2008 nominee, Senator John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam in the 1960s. The supposed experts shook their heads as Trump disparaged a female debate moderator after she asked him about his past slurs aimed at women. Later, Trump mocked a news reporter with a permanent disability, called for construction of an impenetrable wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to halt the flow of illegal immigrants and said the U.S. needed to temporarily stop Muslims from entering the U.S. until it could figure out whether any of them might be terrorists looking to attack the U.S. In surely a first for a U.S. political debate, he boasted at one point about the size of his genitalia. He branded his opponents with nicknames. In perhaps his most devastating attack, Trump described former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, the brother and son of two former U.S. presidents, as having "low energy." The description stuck and eventually drove Bush from the contest. No matter what, support grew Slowly, Trump's political opponents fell by the way, while his support expanded. Polls show it has been heavily weighted toward white men, often without college degrees, many of them left behind without jobs as the country's manufacturing base shrank. No matter what Trump said, what he proposed, what he tweeted late at night about his political opponents or the news of the day, his political support grew. Now Trump is headed to a November national election face-off with the likely Democratic nominee, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. They have a history together: Trump and his current wife, Melania, invited Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, to their 2005 wedding at Trump's Florida estate. The Trump-Clinton winner will become the country's 45th president, replacing President Barack Obama, who will leave office in January after two terms in the White House.

New Details, Questions Arise in Gunbattle that Killed US Navy SEAL

A U.S. Navy SEAL killed Tuesday when Islamic State (IS) fighters punched through Kurdish lines in northern Iraq was part of a Quick Reaction Force, sent in to extract other U.S. troops trapped by the surprise offensive. According to U.S. military officials, a small team of U.S. advisers had been meeting early Tuesday with a Kurdish Peshmerga unit in the town of Telskuf, about 30 kilometers north of Mosul. "They were in contact [with the enemy], they couldn't get away," Operation Inherent Resolve Spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters during a video news conference from Baghdad. The so-called Quick Reaction Team, on standby in case of an emergency, was sent in to retrieve them. "When the QRF arrived, they fought out," Warren said. U.S. officials said Quick Reaction Forces are routinely used to back up missions like the one in Telskuf, but it has been months since one of the teams was called into action. The Navy identified the lone casualty as Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charles Keating IV, a 31-year-old with previous experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was shot during what Warren described as "a dynamic gunfight" pitting the U.S. and Peshmerga forces against more than 125 IS fighters. Keating was evacuated by helicopter to a U.S. medical facility in Irbil, where he died from his injuries. 'Large fight' Warren said a number of Peshmerga fighters were also killed and both of the U.S. Black Hawk helicopters used in the extraction operation were damaged by small arms fire. "This was a large fight, no question about it," Warren said, "one of the largest we've seen recently." U.S. forces also called in for help from the air, getting it from 11 manned aircraft, including fighter jets, B-52 bombers, A-10 ground attack aircraft and two drones, all of which continued to carry out strikes after U.S. forces had left the area. In all, the U.S. says 58 IS fighters were killed in the strikes, which also destroyed three mortar systems, two truck bombs, a bulldozer and more than 20 other vehicles used in the assault. Still, it was not until darkness had fallen that Peshmerga forces managed to clear the area of IS forces, claiming a total of 80 IS fighters had been killed. U.S. military officials said the last time IS tried to carry out an attack on a similar scale was last December, when several hundred IS fighters targeted Tal Aswad. Despite the magnitude and complex nature of the IS assault Tuesday on Telskuf, Warren insisted there was "no indication" IS knew about the presence of the U.S. military advisers. "The enemy's intent, we believe, was to seize the town,” he said. "This enemy has suffered a string of defeats," he added. "When they are back on their heels, often they will try one of these more high-profile, high-visibility attacks in an effort to gain some attention." How did IS do it? Still, there are questions as to how IS was able to mass such a large force — including three truck bombs, a bulldozer and dozens of other vehicles — so close to the Peshmerga front lines without detection. Peshmerga fighters speaking to VOA following the battle in Telskuf said the IS firepower was impressive and that the Peshmerga initially had to retreat because they were outgunned. "Clearly they were able to, over time, infiltrate individuals or vehicles, one or two at a time and then dash out of there under the cover of darkness Tuesday morning," Warren said. For months, some intelligence and military officials have cautioned that even though IS was being pushed back, it retained its ability to adapt. "They're willing to trade space for time," one U.S. official told VOA last month, warning that the terror group seemed to be gearing up to defend its strongholds of Raqqa, Syria and Mosul. "You're going to see a really tough fight." Flaws in coalition strategy? There are also some concerns the surprise offensive in Telskuf may reveal some flaws in the U.S. and coalition's anti-IS strategy. "With the force structure we have in place, we are vulnerable," said Christopher Harmer, senior naval analyst at the Institute for the Study of War. "Because they blend in so well with the population and are, for all practical purposes, indistinguishable from the population when using long-distance surveillance technology, they can mass and attack at the time and place of its choosing," he added. Following a meeting with coalition defense ministers Wednesday in Germany, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter warned that the danger was far from over. "These risks will continue," he said. "All of our friends and allies across the counter-ISIL coalition can and must do more." ISIL is an acronym for Islamic State.

Pundits Were Sure Trump Would Falter

Some in the U.S. media smugly predicted that billionaire reality TV personality Donald Trump would never be the Republican Party's choice for president. But now that he's become the presumptive nominee, let's look at what the political pundits have been predicting about him since last summer. July 2015 James Fallows, The Atlantic magazine:  "The chance of his winning [the] nomination and election is exactly zero." New York Post headline: "Trump is toast after insult: 'McCain not a war hero.'" Ben White, CNBC:  "Donald Trump is not going to be the next president of the United States. This reporter is already on record pledging to eat a bag of rusty nails if the real estate tycoon with the high hair manages to snag the GOP nomination, much less takes down likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton next fall." Peter Fenn, U.S. News & World Report:  "Now, seriously, does anyone other than The Donald truly believe his fame and fortune are going to get him anywhere in a Republican presidential primary, let alone a general election? His candidacy has been a joke from the start. He makes for great copy, but so did Jack the Ripper." August 2015 Abby Huntsman, CNN:  "I think this could be the beginning of the end for Donald Trump." Matthew Yglesias, Vox:  "Trump is no more going to actually win the nomination than [Bernie] Sanders is." Mark Halperin, Bloomberg Politics: “So I think going forward, the establishment, the other candidates, the press, it’s kind of an iron triangle saying Trump is dead. This is the beginning of the end." Jonathan Chait, New York magazine:  "Donald Trump is going to lose because he is crazy." September 2015 Chuck Todd, NBC: “I think this is the week we're going to look back on and say maybe this was the beginning of the end of Trump ’16." Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post:  "Historians looking back will peg the beginning of the end of the Trump show to his New Hampshire moment last week." Daniel Henninger, The Wall Street Journal:  When the primaries arrive early next year, the Trump vote will subdivide further among the other Republican tortoises. If he stays in, Donald Trump becomes another presidential also-ran. With ostentation suitable to his stature, Mr. Trump should retire to a skybox, and enjoy what he has wrought." January 2016 David Brooks, New York Times columnist on NBC:  "It's going to be [Marco] Rubio. I'm telling you: It's going to be Rubio.

Republicans Struggle With Reality of Trump Nomination

The long battle for the Republican presidential nomination has now ended, settling on a new leader of the Republican Party: Donald Trump. Republicans nationwide reacted with a mix of disbelief, anger and grudging acceptance Wednesday, revealing a party that may have a new leader but whose future will be unclear until after the general election this November.     The first signs the party would not immediately unite behind Trump as the nominee emerged Tuesday night, when Texas Senator Ted Cruz dropped out of the race following a resounding loss to Trump in the Indiana primary.  A number of conservative bloggers and party operatives, including former John McCain aide Mark Salter – many of whom had been a part of the unsuccessful Never Trump movement – took to social media to openly declare they would not support Trump, and some even took the unprecedented step of pledging to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton using the hashtag #ImWithHer. “The idea of mainstream or even fairly conservative Republicans coming out to support a Clinton for the presidency is kind of mind-blowing,” said John Hudak, a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution. Clinton - a divisive political figure and a lightning rod for conservative criticism over the past two decades – is a highly unlikely figure to attract any kind of Republican support. “It really puts into perspective how desperate and how angry and how disgusted many elements of the Republican Party are with Trump,” Hudak said. With the concession of Cruz and reports Wednesday that Ohio Governor John Kasich would suspend his campaign, Trump will become the first party leader in more than six decades not to have held political office. “We want to bring unity to the Republican Party,” Trump said in his victory speech Tuesday.  “We have to bring unity.  It's so much easier if we have it.” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus followed by tweeting a message of support intended to solidify a party splintered by the Trump win.   High stakes in House and Senate The choice between Trump and Clinton could drive away many long-time conservative voters as well as Independents, said Hudak. “What happens when Republicans in those states start voting Democrat?  It tells you that maybe Clinton won’t win those states but Republicans are going to have to spend a lot of money in those states and that’s a fast way to win election,” he said.    Now the choice for establishment Republicans and party elders may come down to a matter of tone and political finesse.  Hudak said many will hold their nose and vote for Trump to sustain party unity while refraining from the kind of outright campaigning that would show support for Trump’s ideas and his vision for the presidency. That decision could be a final effort to salvage the party. “It’s an attempt to bring the party to some level of unity so that people will turn out and vote,” said Norm Ornstein, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. “The last line of defense for Republicans is the House and Senate; they want as few divisions that demoralize people as they possibly can get.” Out of the 34 Senate seats up for re-election this November, anywhere from seven to 10 are Republican seats in jeopardy.  Ornstein said the decision to support Trump may ultimately come down to saving those seats. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan have dealt with the reality of Trump in their own ways – McConnell has pushed small bills through the Senate while Ryan hopes to push a bold agenda focused on national security, the economy, poverty and health care through the House. That cannot happen within a fractured Republican party. “The more you distance yourself from your party’s nominee, the more you get a backlash from those populists who have been ardently for Trump saying see, the establishment is defying and betraying us again,” Ornstein said.  “The more you embrace Trump, the more you turn traditional conservatives and Independents away from you.” Future of the party? Cruz positioned himself as the potential leader of the conservative wing of the Republican Party during his concession speech Tuesday night.  Many analysts saw parallels between his speech and Ronald Reagan’s concession to Gerald Ford in 1976.  Reagan ultimately came back in 1980 to win the Republican nomination and the presidency, ushering in a new era of conservatism in American politics.  At age 45, Cruz is young enough to look toward a presidential run in 2020 but the party may be moving beyond his vision.   “The reality is Ronald Reagan was successful in 1976 because he was the future of the Republican Party. Ted Cruz is not the future of this party,” said Hudak.   In 2012, Republicans famously performed an “autopsy” after the loss of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, calling for the party to adapt its perspective and improve outreach to women and minorities.  Instead, the party moved in a completely different direction that ultimately ended with Trump as the nominee. After the general election, a new reckoning will occur.  If Trump wins, his anti-establishment, anti-immigration wing of the party will clearly hold sway.  If he loses, the conservative wing of the party represented by Cruz and the older establishment wing will be left to sort out what remains of a party led by a completely unexpected nominee. “You’re going to see an enormous battle not just for the control of the party apparatus,” said Ornstein, “but for the soul of the Republican Party and it’s not going to be resolved quickly or easily.”
