Hackers target police departments, municipalities Sunday April 12 th , 2015  at  8:09 PM 1 Share (WXYZ) - Hackers have launched a new round of cyberattacks and this time, they're targeting municipalities and police departments. ABC News reports  one of the latest victims was the Tewksbury Police Department in Massachusetts. Hackers were able to gain access to the department's critical files and lock them. The department received a threatening message that said the files would be inaccessible unless the department paid the hackers $500. If the ransom was not paid, the files would be deleted. The department decided it was in its best interest to pay the ransom. Police departments in Illinois, Tennessee and New Hampshire have also fallen victim to the same hackers.
