Coverup claims over revelation that Germany spied on EU partners for US by Ian Traynor in Brussels
Embarrassment for Berlin after reports about inquiry into NSA surveillance say German spies monitored French president’s office and EU institutions
Germany has been spying and eavesdropping on its closest partners in the EU and passing the information to the US for more than a decade, a parliamentary inquiry in Berlin has found, triggering allegations of lying and coverups reaching to the very top of Angela Merkel’s administration.
There was outrage in Germany two years ago over the revelations by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden of US and British surveillance activities in Europe. The fresh disclosures are embarrassing for Berlin, which stands accused of hypocrisy in its protests about the US spying on its allies.

Scotland’s Nationalist Surge by Mackenzie Yang
Scots have had an unexpected response to their own decision in September to vote, by a margin of 10%, to keep Scotland in the U.K.: they have flocked to the Scottish National Party, which spearheaded and lost the pro-independence campaign.
According to polls, the SNP, which currently holds six out of Scotland’s 59 seats in the British House of Commons, could win more than 40 in the U.K. general elections, which will take place on May 7. …

It’s taken a while, but now Labour, the Lib Dems and the Tories are socking it to each other. Voters can no longer say they’re all the same
With a week to go in the longest election campaign for decades, the gloves are coming off. A campaign of extreme tonal caution was in danger of conveying an entirely false message: that there is not much to choose between the parties. While the relatively cautious Lib Dem chief secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, leaks Tory plans to slash welfare, Ed Miliband pays a risky late night visit to Russell Brand and David Cameron looks as if he is pumped up as well as declaring himself to be so, a campaign marked by fearful defensiveness becomes a more marked fight for power and survival.
Good. Those voters who wrongly assume “they’re all the same”, or who are instinctively indifferent, need to get a sense of a battle where the stakes are high. Partly as a result of the previous nervy caution of the bigger parties, the media focus of the campaign had been largely on process rather than the marked ideological divide. Was Cameron showing enough passion? Did he want to win? Which poll is right and which is wrong? Are all the polls right because they are within the margin of error, in which case the margin must be extremely generous?
Alexander’s decision to leak details of Conservative welfare plans is the most vivid example of a new fighting spirit

40 years since Saigon's fall, napalm attack haunts woman in iconic image by Soo Youn in Ho Chi Minh City
Nick Ut’s image of a screaming girl fleeing naked is credited with turning public opinion against the Vietnam war, but for one person in the picture, the nightmares go on
On 8 June 1972, Ho Thi Hien was at her cousin Kim Phuc’s house in the village of Trang Bang in South Vietnam. The adults were out when the children heard the plane overhead and fled, trying to outrun their terror. A South Vietnamese Skyraider had just dropped a napalm bomb, propelling civilians down Vietnam’s Highway 1.
One of them was nine-year-old Phuc who, in a moment captured by photographer Nick Ut, was shown screaming as she ran naked down the road, having stripped off her clothes to rid herself of the poison on her skin. From that moment on she was known as the “napalm girl”. Ho, then 10 years old, ran alongside her cousin. Clothed but barefoot, she was captured on the right-hand side of Ut’s photograph.

U.S. jobless claims fell to a 15-year low last week, as the number of Americans signing up for unemployment aid fell 34,000 to a nationwide total of 262,000. Thursday's report from the Labor Department shows that's the lowest level of job layoffs since the year 2000. Economists say weekly claims below 300,000 are evidence of an improving job market. Last month's unemployment rate was 5.5. percent, and a report from Credit Suisse says the jobless rate will probably fall...

While female politicians feature more heavily than ever before, the air war between the main parties shows this election battle is run by men, for men
This is a curious election campaign for a woman. On the one hand, there are more female political leaders playing a more prominent role than ever before. Nicola Sturgeon and the Greens’ Natalie Bennett, Leanne Wood for Plaid Cymru, and the Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson – that is a lot of women getting an unusual amount of airtime to talk about politics.
But women in politics is not the same as a campaign around women’s issues. And of what might be called a women’s campaign, there is almost no sign at all. As the Fawcett Society reports, women are all but invisible.

UN accused of 'reckless disregard' for allegations of peacekeeper child abuseby Sandra Laville in London and Angelique Chrisafis in Paris

James Wasserstrom, a veteran US diplomat who was sacked and arrested by UN police when he exposed suspicions of corruption by senior officials in Kosovo, said the case of Anders Kompass revealed how the organisation turned on the whistleblower rather than dealing with the wrongdoinghe had revealed.
