The Mysterious Life And Death Of Igor Sergun, The Chief Of The GRU - Russian Military Intelligence | Igor Sergun - News and Web Review

2.10.16 (February 10, 2016)
I did revise my impressions and understanding of the circumstances of Col.Gen. Igor Sergun's death which were first described in the original post below. Presently I think that his death was not a suicide (it probably would be out of character for him, too) but that he was indeed killed in Beirut as was reported in Stratfor and Lebanese newspaper
Gen. Zwack's article remains the most informative up to date about very little what is known about I. Sergun.

The "Voice From The Wilderness" (the source is open and readily available but highly hypothetical, as always; do your own research if you are up to it) pointed to Isaiah 52:13-53:12 from the "Songs of the Suffering Servant":

Isaiah 52:13-53:12New International Version (NIV)

14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him[b]—
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being
and his form marred beyond human likeness—
...
4 Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
...
8 By oppression[d] and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.[e]
...
12 ...
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 King James Version (KJV)

13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

53 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

M.N.: Do not attribute this "Voice" to me: this is not my voice, my feelings or thinking. I just try to understand what "The Voice" said, if indeed it said something and if indeed it was pointing to something (which I think it did, otherwise I would not mention this).

My current feelings and thinking on these matters, be they still uninformed, amorphous and inexperienced, are that the greater strategic depth in analysis and actions (including operations?) is needed (regardless of this particular case, which has its own logic). It is hard to elaborate on this point and at this point in space and time but this elaboration is needed also.

Last Update: 2.1.16

The following is my version and my current understanding of these recent events, whatever they are worth.

Colonel General Igor Sergun's death was a suicide, just like the previous death of Russian marines' chief, Gen. A. Shushukin. Both of them were slated for firing by Putin, to put a blame on them for the Russian jet shooting by Turkey and the lack of quick success in Syria ground operations, to make them the scapegoats. A Tsar is a Tsar: in order to maintain his power and control, he has to chop the heads off ("rubi't bo'shki"). Besides that, and the main reason is that he wanted to get rid of them and to bring in the new people.
Sergun was appointed in December of 2011 and for four years: from 2012, starting with "Costa Concordia" disaster and until the present time (the effects will linger on for some time but eventually will die down within about six months, with the exhaustion of his planned activities, hopefully), he unleashed the hell on the West with his special operations.
This was his "mission" and his assignment, on the verbal or nonverbal, direct or indirect instructions from Putin. Apparently this was also his specialty, from the days of Balkan War of late nineties and Chechen wars: to use militant Islamic movements as the fronts and covers, "false flags" for his operations.
I strongly suspect, as I mentioned previously, that Sergun is the real mastermind of 9/11 (the others being his operatives and covers), it would fit his style (revealed to a certain extent in subsequent operations), and if it is correct, it was the height of his audacity and "achievements".
This "hybrid war" on the West (it did or almost did reach this intensity), besides the strategic thrust (in all its seriousness and intentions) was also a retaliation (this element is present in all operations).
There are some strong indications that in October - November of 2010, Putin was poisoned with dioxine. The chloracne on his face with the subsequent regular plastic surgery operations and procedures and also the array of physical ailments, with back pain among them, is the result of this poisoning.
Lupus, with its characteristic "butterfly rash" might be the complication
Most likely the poisoning was done by the Ukrainian security service as a part of the "natural experiment" and also and primarily as a retaliation for dioxine poisoning of V. Yushchenko for which they blamed Putin. It was the time when these allegations of Yushchenko poisoning were investigated in the Ukranian court hearings.
The hypothesis of Putin's dioxine poisoning is indirectly confirmed by the "Kushchevskaya tragedy", an act of retaliation by Spetsnaz against the suspected or real, lower level operatives-perpetrators, and possibly, later, by some operations in Rostov (murder of Rostov chief of food market).
Putin blamed the West for this poisoning, who he felt was behind the Ukrainians. This explains his rage, the subjective aspect and factor in dealing with Ukraine and possibly the appointment of Sergun in 2011.
Probably Sergun knew very well about the impending firing but refused to take the blame and and to be forced into the position of a scapegoat.
His "Pathankot" (Pahan, khan is kot, a male cat - a shrewd betrayer) message (if it is a message - this, of course, is hypothetical too, just like everything else) might be a confirmation of this knowledge.
Putin did not need Sergun at this point any more because he is forced to change his strategy and he seeks reconciliation with the West. Besides that, all these shenanigans apparently became too obvious, too notorious, and too counterproductive to continue.
However, the "Rape of Europe" was Sergun's last spectacle. He probably planned to perform it with panache and flair (it is a question if everything went according to the plan exactly, the actual number of rapes, as reported, is relatively low), but he enjoyed it fully, I guess: it was his New Year "parting present" to the world, his warning to the Western civilization, his lesson and his testament. And then, after watching the video reports, as I imagine this, he put a gun to his head.
There is another implicit aspect in this hypothetical message: "I am clean, I am a snow white innocent "kalmar" - Kalmar Sweden ("Страж Аквариума строг / Тайный мастер Осьминог / Маскировка его дар: / Белоснежный он кальмар"...), it is him, the Cologne Inspirer, the one with the square balls, who is the secret master and who does all of this, I am just his soldier: Senate Square, Helsinki: "See: Nut Square"... "See, Nakh..." - Maksim Senakh...
This theme is in line with one of the rare and probably the last videos in which Sergun appears, which might be interpreted (highly subjectively) as follows:
"Look better. Put your eyeglasses on. You are framing me. Point your pencil in the right direction..."

There might be another explanation for Sergun's "sudden death": assassination. There are some publications that link this death with some hypothetical, I would say almost mythical (or not) "generals' plot against Putin". This line of speculative, "hypothetical" reasoning is described below:
Another, somewhat peripheral to Sergun's death aspects to consider are Nemtsov's  murder and the hypothetical role and involvement of the GRU in it:
At his last "big press conference" Putin reiterated:
"По поводу преступления в отношении Бориса Ефимовича Немцова. Считаю, что это преступление, которое должно быть расследовано, а виновные – наказаны."
The list of those potentially interested in Sergun's death might be extended to Chechens themselves, be they "within the orbit of the GRU" or not: they might have had the old scores to settle, they have long memory and know how to lay in wait for the convenient or the "authorized" moment.
The role of Putin's Praetorian Guard proper - the Presidential Security Service (Служба безопасности президента Российской Федерации), a branch of Federal Protective Service (Федеральная служба охраны Российской Федерации, ) as, hypothetically a liaison or informal overseer of the GRU (nothing is known about this subject in the open media, it seems), is also an interesting issue to entertain. In this regard, Stratfor mentions "rumors that indicate Security Services shift" and the recent personnel changes and their reported involvement into "economic pacification" are also of note. It looks like Putin is strengthening the layers of security around himself in the conditions of economic (and emerging political) crises and potential unrest among the populace and the elites. Given this circumstance, the hypothesis of possible "generals plot" might be not so "mythical", after all.
Putin's and his security services direct involvement into the shenanigans is theoretically possible but I strongly doubt it, not because of their stature or high moral values but simply because they do not have the capabilities: the sufficient (not an iota, I would think) resources and expertise that GRU has. Not even the SVR can compare with the GRU in this regard. But I might be mistaken, I am not in a slightest degree a "specialist" in these matters at all, and I am not that well informed; just a mouse moving little blogger.
If Gen. Sergun was killed, it was, most likely the inside job, I would imagine that it was extremely difficult, practically impossible to get to him from the outside. It seems to me, again, that the assassination version is much less likely than the suicide version.
As the Russian General Staff official put it, "there will be many speculations about Sergun's death". The discussion above might contain some speculations or "artistic fantasies". Or there might be some degree of truth in it. Be it all as it may, I wish we would know more about this person, his life, his personality, his actions and his death.

Death of the GRU Commander - by Peter Zwack - from "Defense One":

"I’m frankly unsure how to feel about his death. As a career U.S. Army military intelligence officer, and our senior military attaché to Russia from 2012 to 2014, I met with General Sergun and his staff several times for extended periods. I found him soft-spoken, unassuming, complex, erudite and nuanced. And I learned that even as Sergun relentlessly directed global intelligence operations against our interests, he — paradoxically — also viewed constant confrontation with the U.S. and West as not in Russia’s best long-term interest."

Peter Zwack, who recently retired from the U.S. Army as a brigadier general, is a Senior Research Fellow at the National Defense University’s Institute of National Security Studies. These are his personal views.
