The Ignited States of America: Crowd Assaults Police Officer Trying to Make Arrest
Authorities say a hostile crowd assaulted a Florida police officer while he was trying to arrest a combative man.
On Sunday morning, a Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) officer was shot and killed while driving his squad car.
New Orleans Police Department Supt. Michael Harrison said “the 45-year-old HANO officer was driving in Central City when he was fatally shot.”
According to 9 WAFB, HANO reported “that one of their officers was shot at the location around 7:10 a.m. When NOPD officers arrived, they found the officer dead inside his marked police car.” 4 WWLTV reports that “the driver’s side window [of the car] was broken out and the cruiser lights were still on when responding officers found the body.”
The car was also still in drive when officers found it.
Investigators think the HANO officer “was shot in the 2300 block of Erato Street and his car continued to roll forward, coming to a stop after striking a curb at the intersection of Freret and Erato.”
No motive or suspects have been discovered.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu released a statement regarding the officer’s death:
The death of this HANO police officer is an unspeakable tragedy, and a vile and cowardly act. Tragedies that involve our men and women in uniform affect our entire city and touch every member of our law enforcement community. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our hearts and prayers are with the officer’s friends and family and with the entire HANO family during this very difficult time.

Melbourne Police say the officer was arresting 22-year-old Phoenix Low of Melbourne early Saturday on a city ordinance violation of carrying an open container of alcohol.
A police statement says Low became combative and attempted to run before the officer wrestled him to the ground.
Cmdr. Vince Pryce says a crowd gathered and began striking and pulling at the officer, who took out his Taser and told “the aggressive advancing crowd” to get back.
Pryce says the officer suffered cuts and bruises.
Along with the ordinance violation, Low was charged with resisting an officer and battery on a law enforcement officer. He was released late Sunday from the Brevard County jail.
