The Westminster library of the 17th-century antiquary Sir Robert Cotton was organized in a highly eccentric manner. Cotton used busts of Roman luminaries—Julius, Cleopatra, Augustus, Vitellius, and so on—to mark his shelves. Here, placed, perhaps inauspiciously, under Nero was a manuscript that contained four poems, all, it would seem, by the same author: an elegy in the form of a dream vision, a homiletic narrative illustrated with examples from Genesis and Daniel, a paraphrase of the Book of Jonah, and a chivalric romance. For centuries, no mention is made of PearlCleanness,Patience, or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, as we now call them, in the works of English bibliographers. They were unread and unknown, languishing first in the care of Cotton and his descendants, later in the Ashburnham House, also in Westminster, there surviving in 1731 a fire that somehow failed to consume the manuscript of Beowulf, and finally in the British Museum, until 1824, when they were rediscovered.
What do we know of the author of these four poems? Nothing save what internal textual evidence suggests. He lived in Cheshire in the late 14th century and was thus a contemporary of Chaucer, Gower, and Langland, although it is unlikely that he met any of them. His learning was both wide and deep. He seems to have read French and Latin and perhaps Italian. He was a pious man who knew his Vulgate well, though his theology was somewhat heterodox. He had been poor at least some of his life, though not, it seems, at the time of his writing. Critics, including the editors of the presentvolume, seizing upon the many detailed references to gemology and goldsmithing in Pearl, have suggested that he might have been a jeweler or otherwise involved in the minerals trade.
Gawain has been a syllabus item for decades, almost invariably in “translations”; but even future graduate students tend to remember only one thing: its so-called bob-and-wheel structure, in which a short line at the end of a stanza is followed by four shorter lines in an ababa pattern—a hobby horse, for whatever reason, of those responsible for the GRE English Subject Test. Reading W.S. Merwin or Marie Boroff’s serviceable but uneven versions of the poem, they learn almost nothing about philology, which would be a great pity in its own right were it not the case that, unlike so much else written in English before 1580 or so, Gawain is a literary masterpiece that anyone with a patient eye and a fair gloss can appreciate in something like its original form.

After the legendary origins of Britain have been recounted, in a wayward invocation that has doubtless been the undoing of many would-be readers, the narrative begins at Camelot, where King Arthur’s court have gathered for Christmas. Their revels, of which the poet gives a wry description, are interrupted by the appearance of a monstrous figure. The Green Knight, whose pallid complexion makes one wonder whether the author might have been familiar with the symptoms of anemia, rides into the hall astride an equally green mount. With a bough of holly in one hand and a great axe in the other, he dares the young monarch to strike him with his weapon, saying that he will give as good as he gets in a year and a day’s time. Sir Gawain, the youngest of the knights present, beseeches the king to allow him to deliver the blow in the royal stead:
Gawan gripped to his axe and gederes hit on hyghte
The kay fote on the folde he before sette,
Let hit doun lyghtly lyght on the naked,
That the scharp of the schalk schyndered the bones
And schrank thurgh the schyres gres and schede hit in twynne,
That the bitte of the broun stele bote on the grounde.
The Green Knight casually lifts his severed head from the floor and brandishes it in the face of the ladies; the head opens its mouth to remind Gawain that he must meet his challenger next year at a place called the Green Chapel to take his turn under the blade.
After a short interlude we meet Gawain again on a cold winter morning when he sets out on his doomed journey. Here the grotesquerie of the Green Knight’s entrance and the random beauties of the early lines describing the change of seasons (“When the donkande dewe dropes of the leves / To bide a blysful blusch of the bryght sunne”) give way to brooding and even terror. Gawain arrives at a castle, where the master, one Bertilak de Hautdesert, tells him he is two miles from the Green Chapel and asks him to stay a few days. What comes afterward—the first sight of the crone, the repeated temptations from Hautdesert’s wife, the bargains and the exchanges of gifts, the concealed girdle, and the fateful meeting with the Green Knight, whose identity we at once find shocking and not at all—is as haunting and surreal as anything in English.
Pearl, more so even than Gawain, is the sort of poem to the study of which one might devote one’s life. Among the most intricate works of its kind ever conceived, it comprises 101 stanzas of 12 semi-alliterative lines with a rhyme scheme of ababababbcbc in which a crucial word from the end of each stanza is repeated at the beginning of the next: a perplexing configuration from which clues about the author’s surname and an allusion to the 144-cubit walls of the New Jerusalem (12 × 101 = 1212; 12 × 12 = 144), among other arithmantic wonders, have been divined.
It is unfortunate that the most widely read elegy in our language continues to be “Lycidas,” a sulkily anticlerical piece of verse that is otherwise mostly about water, rather than this moving lament for the author’s two-year-old daughter, written at a time when one out of every three children died before the age of five. In Pearl a man wanders in a garden mourning the loss of a “privy perle withouten spote,” which, we soon guess, did not issue from the mantle of an oyster. After falling asleep under a tree, he finds himself in a fantastical landscape surrounded by “crystal clyffes” and trees “as blwe as ble of Ynde”:
As burnist sylver the lef on slydes
That thik con trylle on uch a tynde;
When glem of glodes agayns hem glydes
Wyth schymeryng schene ful schrylle thay schinde.
Across a stream he sees a maiden, whom he recognizes as his lost child, restored to life and crowned as a Bride of Christ. When he asks her how, despite her early death, she has accrued such heavenly merit, she responds with a beautiful soteriological discourse in which she expresses views somewhat at odds with the spirit, if not the letter, of the medieval church’s teachings about the necessity of good works for salvation, and, it will seem to some readers, hinting at a kind of universalism. She then grants him his wish of seeing the New Jerusalem, which is described in language reminiscent of Revelation 21:11-21, so long as he agrees to remain on his side of the stream. Ignoring the maiden’s instructions, he attempts to cross the river of life and awakens. Though saddened to return to “this doel-doungoun” of ours, he vows to live the rest of his life in blissful obedience to God in anticipation of that day when, like his daughter, he will be one of the “precious perles unto His pay.”
It is nice to have both these wonderful poems, along with Patience and Cleanness, in a new edition by Ad Putter and Myra Stokes. Spelling has been more or less regularized. Þ and ȝ have been replaced by th and y throughout. At this and various other slight modernizations, purists will blanche, but they will have E.V. Gordon’s beautifully printed and unsurpassable edition of Pearl on the shelf already. The exhaustive glosses and copious notes—more than two pages for every one of already heavily annotated verse—will make this volume useable by undergraduates and other curious readers with little experience of Middle English.
The Works of the Gawain Poet is a model of popular scholarship, one that harkens back to the glories of the old historical criticism of Tolkien and Henry Sweet. That it has appeared not under the imprimatur of a university press but as a reasonably priced paperback from Penguin Classics is a pleasant surprise. It belongs on the shelves of every library in the English-speaking world.

An obvious statement: This book should not have been published. Well, perhaps this is not so obvious. Go Set a Watchman was a success from one point of view, which is the one of making money, and that is probably all that matters. We have been informed by Lee’s lawyer, Tonja Carter, that a third manuscript may have also appeared (more accurately, another draft of Mockingbird). For anyone who is concerned about Lee’s papers being carefully treated after her death, Go Set a Watchman and the subsequent announcement of a potential third book are both cause for alarm.
Many of us are interested in Lee’s papers. There is the second novel, if anything of it was ever written or survives. There’s also her true crime attempt, The Reverend. On the other hand, there’s a perverse attraction in the thought that she never did write anything else, that she wrote one instantly winning book, decided she said what she had to say, and then retired and joined the ranks of the other cherished recluses of literary history. Who can’t admire the person who can say, well, I’ve succeeded enough?
Digging deeper into Lee’s life (with the help of Mockingbird, a biography by Charles J. Shields) complicates this myth but doesn’t altogether dispel it. Lee was never a recluse, but she hated—and, presumably, still hates—journalists. The second book was always meant to happen, but she spent much of the critical years after Mockingbird assisting Truman Capote with In Cold Blood—five yearsof work, including multiple extended trips to Kansas, research, and editing the manuscript.
Indeed, it is probably fair to regard In Cold Blood, if not as Lee’s second book, as the book that took its place. Capote, who never met a hand he did not immediately bite, repaid his childhood friend first by not listing her in the book’s acknowledgements, and then by telling his biographer that Lee’s mother had tried to drown her twice as a child. “When they talk about Southern grotesque, they’re not kidding!” he quipped. That was the end of their friendship.
Then her literary agent, Maurice Crain, grew too ill to represent her; he died; her editor, Tay Hohoff, retired; she died. So Harper Lee retired, too. Eventually, these accidents coalesced into the myth of the woman who said only what she had to say, and no more, a myth that Harper Lee herself seems to have come around to believing. To Kill a Mockingbird became a fixture in high school literature curricula and its author passed into legend. The end.
Then Marja Mills, a journalist with the Chicago Tribune, published her memoir—written, she claims, with Lee’s blessing—of living next door to Harper Lee. She was immediately threatened by Harper Lee’s litigious new lawyer, Tonja Carter, who sent forth a statement under Harper Lee’s name stating, “I have not willingly participated in any book written or to be written by Marja Mills.” Mills, who already had in hand a statement to the contrary signed by Alice Lee (Harper Lee’s sister and also a lawyer) then received a message from Alice stating, “Poor Nelle Harper can’t see and can’t hear and will sign anything put before her by any one in whom she has confidence.” A little over two months after Alice’s death, the discovery of Go Set a Watchman was announced. (We now know that it was discovered while Alice was alive.)
Go Set a Watchman was not a separate book but an early draft of Mockingbird, and contradictsMockingbird on at least one important particular (the outcome of the Tom Robinson case, which was successful in Watchman but not in Mockingbird). Despite this, it was published as-is. Without speculating overmuch as to motivation—perhaps Alice maliciously suppressed this manuscript and Carter is respecting Lee’s wishes—concern about the wisdom of this book’s publication is not greatly in evidence here.
What about quality? Did Lee’s editor, Hohoff, cut down a work of great literary genius? No.Watchman is an undeniably bad book, structurally unsound, with no real plot and not even a real ending. It shows everywhere the signs of having been written by a person who thought primarily in short stories (as Lee had up until that point). It has long and awkwardly inserted digressions into childhood that are meant, I think, to provide its thinly sketched Maycomb County with some texture, but instead just feel dropped in from some other book.
But, of course, it was never meant to be judged at this level—it was meant to be judged on its potential, which it has, and which Hohoff saw and cultivated. You can hear Harper Lee’s authorial voice from the first line, when Jean Louise looks out “the dining-car window with a delight almost physical.”  But even if it had been published in a less dramatically revised form, it would have required substantial work. (One example: there are multiple references to a Supreme Court case, the details of which are never closely discussed. The case is probably Brown v. Board of Education—but good luck figuring this out.) If read as an illustration of Mockingbird’s virtues, the book becomes slightly more interesting, if not much better.
Go Set a Watchman takes place from the perspective of an adult woman, Jean Louise Finch (Scout to her father, Atticus), who travels back home from New York City back to Maycomb County, Alabama. There, after reuniting with her family and with Hank Clinton (a childhood friend who is eager to marry her), she discovers that her old friends and family are opposed to racial integration, that her father and her would-be husband sit on the Maycomb County Citizens’ Council and work to thwart the NAACP, and that her aunt keeps racist pamphlets in the home. Betrayed and enraged by this, she prepares to leave after only three days. This is all resolved, sort of, though not in a way that anybody is likely to find dramatically or morally satisfying.
As a historical artifact, particularly one published into the middle of this summer’s very contentious argument about the Confederate flag, Go Set a Watchman is partly interesting because of how little things have changed when it comes to discussions of “Southern heritage.” When Atticus mildly explains to his daughter that he is simply a Jeffersonian Democrat, he is not merely speaking like one of the many Confederate nostalgists writing today, but like my own friends from my Tennessee childhood. Similarly, existential threats are invoked but left suspiciously undefined. When Jean Louise demands answers about why her family is willing to work with open racists, they do not condone white supremacy but they do not condemn it either. White supremacists, as members of the community, have at any rate a right to a voice, though black members of “the community” seem not to exist. Such reasoning is presented to Jean Louise as a matter of tribal allegiance: We can’t help it, we are who we are, and we must follow out the tragic logic of our heritage, whatever it is exactly that our heritage is.
For all its directness, Go Set a Watchman flinches from really considering the town where Scout grew up and her own childhood. Maycomb was good, until it was bad. Its ultimate resolution is a vague gesture toward the importance of living in communities, even though it is clear that this particular evil is being enforced as a community norm. There is no clear sense in which thinking well of other people is a solution to systemic racial oppression, but it is the solution offered to Jean Louise by her father and her uncle.
Of course, it is still the solution offered by Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.  But even in that book, there are some reasons to believe that we are not meant to regard Atticus as the infallible moral authority that he regards himself. His last line, when he tells Scout that most people are nice “when you finally see them,” is a statement that the rest of To Kill a Mockingbird carefully undermines. (Even in context, it comes off as hollow; the “real nice” person Scout is discussing is Boo Radley, their mysterious neighbor, who intervened when someone was attempting to murder her and her brother Jem.)
Atticus has an ironclad conscience, which he refuses to violate. This makes him better than almost everybody else in the town, but it does not bring him as far as he thinks. It means that he will take on the Tom Robinson case and defend him as far as he is able, but not cast this decision as anything other than a lawyer living up to his profession. As young Scout learns to appreciate her father’s moral courage, the adult reader understands his moral limitation. (Whether or not much adult reading ofMockingbird ever takes place—even among adults—is another question.)
Boo Radley, for this purpose, comes to be not so much the friendly giant next door but a particularly awful dramatization of the ways in which Maycomb County turns a blind eye to evils within its limits. Boo Radley is not really reclusive, or at least is not according to neighborhood lore. He is literally imprisoned, seemingly against his will, next door to the Finch household, for the crime of making his father look slightly foolish. When he finds an outlet to the rest of the world through his gifts to Scout and Jem, his brother destroys it.
When his intervention to save Scout and Jem threatens to expose him to the outside world, the local sheriff refuses to allow it. Atticus acquiesces. The decision is framed as an act of respect for Boo’s privacy; but it is unclear he wants that privacy respected, or that it even is privacy for him. But just as Atticus can convince himself that the lynch mob he faces at one point in the novel is composed of basically good people, so he can convince himself never to do much for Boo Radley other than ask that his children not bother him. Maycomb County encourages everybody to stay in their own lane; what goes on in that lane is of little importance.
Mockingbird preserves the divided loyalties of Watchman by splitting Scout’s narrative voice into a young Scout and an adult Scout. But instead of pouring all of the trouble into straightforward speeches, it proposes to do to the reader what it does to young Scout: trick them into loving the place and then show them the rot by degrees. At this, it succeeds, possibly too well. It was memorably dismissed by Francine Prose in her 1999 Harper’s essay “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read” as one of many “sentimental, middlebrow favorites” that dominate poorly taught English classes: “To read the novel is, for most, an exercise in wish-fulfillment and self-congratulation, a chance to consider thorny issues of race and prejudice from a safe distance and with the comfortable certainty that the reader would never harbor the racist attitudes espoused by the lowlifes in the novel.”
But if the reader really is comfortably ensconced in Scout’s point of view, they would have to be very comfortable indeed not to notice the ease with which she slings around racial put-downs. To Kill a Mockingbird is certainly middlebrow, if the word means anything, but it is not really sentimental. It is a loving portrayal of the South that I know, for which I do not feel only love. It is not perfect. But it is good.
It is easy to imagine an edition of Watchman that could have been better. Packaged in a critical edition, with correspondence between Lee and her editor showing how it developed into the book that we now know, it would have been a more useful volume and probably just as explosively a successful one. If nothing else, it would have been a reminder that no book is the product of one person, or of one genius, no matter how intriguingly reclusive. Books come from writers, editors, agents, friends, and places; they are objects formed by one sensibility, but with help from many others.

Peshmerga, US strikes fail to dislodge ′Islamic State′ | Middle East | DW.COM

"We want the good people to hear our prayers and free our country as soon as possible," said Johanna Boutros Moshe, the Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Mosul. On Thursday morning, he gathered in the ruins of a fourth-century monastery with other Christian dignitaries to pray for the liberation of his homeland. Mar Mattai is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. Currently, it can only be visited with special authorization because it is in the middle of a restricted military zone. The liberators the archbishop speaks of have taken up positions within sight of the monastery. The headquarters of the Kurdish peshmerga's 12th Brigade is perched on a hilltop about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of the Kurdish city of Irbil.
In June 2014, militants took control of the city of Mosul, with its 2 million citizens; the Anbar province capital, Tikrit; and large swaths of the provinces of Saladin, Nineveh and Diyala. Four weeks later, the "Islamic State" was officially proclaimed. But IS's appetite for conquest was not sated. On August 3, the group attacked the Yazidi city of Sinjar, home to 100,000 residents and, four days after that, the Christian city of Bakhdida and its 60,000 residents. IS's territorial expansion was then halted just shy of Irbil and Dohuk. The United States sent in bombers, and once again Washington was conducting military operations in Iraq.
Since then, countless sorties have been flown across Iraq and Syria by a US-led coalition of about 20 countries. Clear-cut victories have been rare. Whenever the United States announces successes to the international press, IS regroups and counterattacks a few days later. For instance, just one week after coalition forces liberated Tikrit, IS recaptured it. In December, the Pentagon announced that the coalition had been able to decisively defeat IS following the start of the peshmerga offensive in northwestern Iraq just prior to Christmas. Indeed, the area of land stretching up to the Sinjar Mountains, as well as the Mosul Dam, are no longer in danger. But the city of Sinjar itself, from which thousands of Yazidis were tragically forced to flee, still remains under IS control. The group's black flag also flies above Bakhdida, Bashiqa and Bartella, majority-Christian cities still waiting to be liberated by the peshmerga.
From the headquarters of the peshmerga brigade near the Mar Mattai monastery, one gazes out across the biblical Nineveh plains. IS's black flag can be clearly seen through the brigadier general's binoculars. It flies from the mosques, cell towers and church steeples in Bashiqa in order to show who is in control of the city. It is only 3 kilometers away from where the peshmerga are positioned. Yet that short distance seems insurmountable at the moment. "We've built mounds, dug trenches, and built more mounds to shore up our position," the commander said. "They have land mines and TNT charges." More than 1,500 peshmerga have already lost their lives in the fight. Whenever they attempt to recapture IS territory, they end up stepping on land mines. The general is hoping that experts will soon arrive to tell him and his fighters how to detect and defuse the mines.

A year of suffering for Yazidis
Nareen Shammo gets tears in her eyes when she thinks about the fate of her hometown. "Bashiqa was little Iraq," the 28-year-old said. For centuries, all of the different ethnic groups that made up the country lived with one another here. Nareen is a Yazidi, but that was always of less importance to her than the mix of groups in her city. She had friends from all different backgrounds. As a child she could see mosques, churches and Yazidi cemeteries from the hilltops above the city. "I was happy that we all lived together," she said. "It will never be the same again." Now she lives in Irbil, and is skeptical about whether she'll ever be able to return home. The peshmerga are situated at the spot where Nareen once stood as a child. She blames them for her misery, saying that if the soldiers had not retreated, the Yazidis would never have had to flee.
Nareen Shammo
Shammo fears that the plurality of her native region will never be restored
Turkmen and Christians also speak of the failure of the peshmerga to provide them with the protection that they were promised. In June 2014, thousands of Iraqi soldiers deserted the army, leaving the people and their territory to IS without putting up a fight. Two months later, the peshmerga capitulated to the terrorists in similar fashion. The uncontested flight of between 8,000 and 10,000 peshmerga fighters has left a bitter taste in the mouths of the locals. It is said that about 700 peshmerga even deserted to IS. Now, blame is coming from all corners. The myth of the Kurdish freedom fighter that has evolved over the years has been severely tarnished. The humiliation has been hard to bear for the peshmerga. There is much talk of conspiracy. One often hears that the Americans ordered the Kurds to retreat, even that the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad is working in concert with IS. Or that former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite Muslim, sought revenge, and so initiated the largely Sunni IS's second attack on the Kurds. The possibility that none wants to believe is the one most plausible and the one given by peshmerga soldiers themselves: They were ill-prepared and didn't have the hardware to fight back.
"We will hunt down those who committed this crime against the Yazidi, down to the last man," Kurdish President Masoud Barzani said at a memorial in Dohuk to honor the victims of last year's attack.
Nareen Shammo doesn't believe him anymore. "It was trust that the cruelties of IS destroyed," she said, summing up a common sentiment about Kurdish forces: "They abandoned us, and left us at the mercy of IS."

Obama: “Window opened for political resolution in Syria”

August 9, 2015, 7:05 AM (IDT)
DEBKA Weekly in its last issue of revealed that the Obama administration had moved on from its nuclear accord with Iran to join up with Russia and Iran for resolving the Syrian conflict by saving the Assad regime. President Barack Obama has confirmed this: “The window has opened a crack for us to get a political resolution in Syria, partly because both Russia and Iran, I think, recognize that the trend lines are not good for Assad,” he said. “Neither of those patrons are particularly sentimental; they don’t seem concerned about the humanitarian disaster that’s been wrought by Assad and this conflict over the last several years, but they are concerned about the potential collapse of the Syrian state. And that means, I think, the prospect of more serious discussions than we’ve had in the past.”
DEBKAfile: Those discussions have in fact reached the point at which Obama felt the need to start preparing the American public for his administration’s acceptance that the window to a political resolution in Syria hinges on keeping Bashar Assad in power.

Russia and US woo Saudis to help save Assad - albeit putting Israel and Jordan in danger from S. Syria

August 9, 2015, 9:47 AM (IDT)
Building on the nuclear accord, the Obama administration has been in close communion with Moscow and Tehran on moves to save the Assad regime as the key to ending the Syrian conflict and a united front against the Islamic State. This initiative was to have peaked at the Doha foreign ministers’ meeting on Aug. 3, except that it was blocked by Saudi refusal to acknowledge Assad. The US and Russia hope to change Riyadh’s mind when Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir visits Moscow on Aug. 11. But then, Israel and Jordan would face great peril from southern Syria.

Moscow uses threats to force Saudis into line over Syria

August 9, 2015, 1:33 PM (IDT)
Arab sources reported Sunday that in advance of Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir’s visit to Moscow on Aug. 11, the Russians are trying some arm-twisting to make Riyadh fall into line and join them and the Americans in accepting the Assad regime. Moscow intends putting before the minister the final US-Russian plan for resolving the Syrian conflict. If the Saudis continue to show resistance, Moscow will draft a UN Security Council motion condemning the Saudi invasion of Yemen and demanding its immediate withdrawal. The DEBKAfile Special Report provides exclusive background on this turn of events.
