Three Americans who helped thwart potential massacre aboard Amsterdam-to-Paris train describe

France train attack: Footage shows the moments after the gunman was subdued by passengers.
A US passenger who tackled a gunman on a train from Amsterdam to Paris says survival instinct led him to react to tackle the gunman.
(BEIRUT) — Lebanese riot police fired tear gas and water cannons for the second consecutive day in downtown Beirut Sunday as they battled protesters with batons and stones — a marked escalation of mass demonstrations against an ongoing trash crisis.
Sporadic gunfire echoed through the capital’s commercial district into the night as police fired in the air to disperse protesters. The violence came hours after Prime Minister Tammam Salam hinted he might step down following violent protests Saturday that injured more than 100 people.
The violence threatens to plunge Lebanon in new instability and political turmoil, adding to the greater Mideast’s upheaval. The demonstrations, the largest in years to shake tiny Lebanon, seek to upend what protesters see as a corrupt and dysfunctional political system that has no functional Cabinet or parliament, nor a president for more than a year.
“We are ruled by corrupt losers! All of them — warlords, legislators and ministers — are working for their own interest and not those of the people,” said Nada Qadoura, a retired woman who took part in Sunday’s protest along with two of her friends. “The will of the people will eventually succeed no matter how long it takes.”
Sunday’s clashes broke out shortly before sunset when angry protesters tried to break through barbed wire leading to the government’s headquarters. Police beat back protesters with clubs and water cannons, occasionally hurling stones at protesters who threw rocks and water bottles.
At least two riot police officers were injured and whisked away by their colleagues. Ambulances carried away at least five injured protesters from Riad Solh Square in central Beirut, where the demonstrators had been gathering since the morning.
Later Sunday evening, protesters were able to break through the first barbed wire after intense clashes with security forces. When the protesters got closer to the government headquarters, police fired tear gas, forcing thousands to flee.
The protesters took over a police motorcycle and set it on fire. Some protesters carrying clubs also attacked police vehicles, hurling stones and bottles at them.
“Shabiha!” the protesters would shout, an Arabic term often used to refer to thugs.
Sunday’s protest was larger than the previous day’s, with some local television stations saying about 20,000 people participated.
The protests started over garbage piling up on the streets after the capital’s main landfill was closed a month ago. An online group calling itself “You Stink!” and other civil society groups organized the rallies, calling on Lebanese to join them in a revolt against the corrupt system.
Protesters now demand that the country’s top politicians resign, saying they are not fit to rule to country. Salam, Lebanon’s prime minister, said in a news conference earlier Sunday that if this Thursday’s Cabinet meeting is not productive, “then there is no need for the council of ministers.”
Lebanon has a sectarian power-sharing system that ensures equal representation between the country’s main religious sects. The arrangement often leads to complete paralysis, though Lebanon has been relatively calm amid regional instability. A resignation by Salam would risk plunging the country into further chaos.

India, Pakistan: Why NSA Talks Failed?by webdesk@voanews.com (Ayesha Tanzeem)
Pakistan finally blinked in what some observers called an absurd game of diplomatic chicken with its rival India. The two countries were to hold National Security Adviser-level talks in New Delhi on Sunday and Monday and had wavered on the meeting for days before Pakistan called them off Saturday night. At issue was the agenda of what the NSAs would discuss. India was adamant that the talks would be about terrorism and terrorism alone. Pakistan wanted a broader agenda that included...

said he and his friends took down the gunman before choking him unconscious.
“He seemed like he was ready to fight to the end,” Stone said. “So were we.”
Stone spoke at a live news conference at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Paris along with Anthony Sadler and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos.
Stone is hailed not only for being the first to grapple with the attacker, but for helping to stop the bleeding in a French-American passenger wounded by a bullet.
Stone, wearing a sling on his left arm, was wounded in the attack and said he will receive further medical treatment in Germany.
Stone said the attacker kept pulling out weapons from his bag, and that he was stabbed in the neck and sliced on his hand.
Stone said his thumb was reattached during his hospital stay in Lille. He thanked the French doctors, police officers and others.
Skarlatos said military training played a part in subduing the gunman.
“In the beginning it was mostly gut instinct, survival,” he said. “Our training kicked in after the struggle.”
U.S. Ambassador Jane Hartley praised the three Americans, calling them heroes.
“We often use the word hero and in this case I know that word has never been more appropriate,” Hartley said.
“They are truly heroes. When most of us would run away, Spencer, Alek and Anthony ran into the line of fire, saying ‘Let’s go.’ Those words changed the fate of many.”

People Sought in Bangkok Bombing May Have Fled Country, Police Say by POYPITI AMATATHAM and THOMAS FULLER
Thailand’s chief of police appeared to be trying to lower public expectations that the main person being sought in the explosion at a shrine would be caught anytime soon.
(PARIS) — The man who boarded a high-speed Amsterdam-to-Paris train with a Kalashnikov rifle before being tackled by passengers was on the radar of authorities in three countries, had ties to radical Islam and had traveled to Syria, authorities said.
The attacker was identified by a French official close to the investigation as Ayoub El-Khazzani, 26, who was known to authorities in France, Belgium and Spain. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
Officials did not disclose a possible motive for the Friday attack, but Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Spanish authorities had advised French intelligence about the suspect because he belongs to the “radical Islamist movement.” Three people were injured but no one died, and authorities credited brave American, French and British passengers with stopping El-Khazzani, who they said was armed with the assault rifle, nine magazines, a pistol and a box cutter.
El-Khazzani was being questioned Sunday by French counter-terrorism police who confirmed through fingerprints their suspicions that he was the same man who had been brought to their attention in February 2014, according to the French official. French authorities said he had lived in the southern Spanish city of Algeciras, frequenting a mosque which is under surveillance there. He was transferred Saturday morning to anti-terror police headquarters outside Paris and can be held for up to 96 hours.
A lawyer for El-Khazzani told French television BFM that he had told her he only intended to rob the train and is “dumbfounded” that it is being treated as an act of terrorism.
“When I told him about the media attention he didn’t understand,” said Sophie David, a lawyer in Arras who represented El-Khazzani during his initial questioning by police. “He says he planned to hold up the train, then shoot out a window and jump out to escape.”
Spain’s Interior Ministry said El-Khazzani had lived with his parents in Algeciras and had been arrested three times for drug-dealing while living there.
A ministry spokesman said it was not immediately clear how long he had lived there, or if other members of his family had also shared the same house.
Spanish newspapers El Pais and El Mundo both reported that he had lived in the relatively poor neighborhood of El Saladillo, which has around 6,000 inhabitants and an unemployment rate close to 40 percent.
There were discrepancies between French and Spanish accounts of the gunman’s travels.
An official linked to Spain’s anti-terrorism unit said the suspect lived in Spain until 2014, then moved to France, traveled to Syria, and returned to France. That official spoke on condition anonymity because he was not authorized to be identified by name.
The French official close to the investigation said the French signal “sounded” on May 10 in Berlin, where El-Khazzani was flying to Turkey. The French transmitted this information to Spain, which advised on May 21 that he no longer lived there but in Belgium. The French then advised Belgium, according to the official close to the investigation, but it wasn’t clear what, if any, action was taken after that.
El-Khazzani had the Kalashnikov strapped across his shoulder when a French citizen trying to use the toilet encountered him and tried to subdue him, Cazeneuve said. Bullets started flying and two American servicemen, with help from a friend and a Briton, tackled and disarmed him.
The Briton, businessman Chris Norman, said he was working on his computer when he heard a shot and glass breaking and saw a train worker running. Three Americans— U.S. Airman Spencer Stone and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos from Roseburg, Oregon, and their friend, Anthony Sadler, a senior at Sacramento State University in California — heard glass breaking at the same time.
“I knew we had to do something or he was just going to kill people,” Skarlatos told Oregon television station KEZI. “I mean he wasn’t shooting at the time so I figured it was a good time to do it.”
Sadler told The Associated Press that they saw a train employee sprint down the aisle followed by a man with an automatic rifle.
“As he was cocking it to shoot it, Alek just yells, ‘Spencer, go!’ And Spencer runs down the aisle,” Sadler said. “Spencer makes first contact, he tackles the guy, Alek wrestles the gun away from him, and the gunman pulls out a box cutter and slices Spencer a few times. And the three of us beat him until he was unconscious.”
Norman said he was the fourth to jump into the fray, grabbing the gunman’s right arm and tying it with his tie.
Video showed a blood-spattered scene on the train, with the gunman prostrate and shirtless, his hands tied behind his back. Authorities said that in addition to the guns, he had nine loaded magazines for the Kalashnikov. Skarlatos, who served in Afghanistan, said that when he examined the assault rifle, he found that the gunman had tried to fire it but that it didn’t go off because it had a bad primer.
Sadler said the gunman remained silent throughout the brief incident. But with the weapons he carried, “he was there to do business,” Skarlatos said in an interview shown on French television.
French actor Jean-Hugues Anglade, who cut his finger to the bone while activating the train’s emergency alarm, heaped praise on the Americans, recounting the high emotion of the episode to Paris Match.
“I thought it was the end, that we would die,” he said. “Yes, we saw ourselves dying because we were prisoners in this train and it was impossible to escape the nightmare.”
The train, in Belgium, was rerouted to Arras in northern France, the nearest station, where El-Khazzani was arrested.
Stone was taken to a hospital in nearby Lille with a hand injury and an unidentified dual French-American citizen with a bullet wound who was helicoptered to another hospital in Lille.
That victim, wounded in the chest, remained hospitalized in intensive care Sunday in “serious but stable” condition, and his life is not in danger, according to Patrick Goldstein, head of the emergency service at CHRU Lille hospital.
“There is strictly no change from yesterday. His condition is perfectly stable and there’s no surgical procedure planned,” Goldstein said on French television BFM, adding that the victim “is an exceptional person with great calm.”
Stone, of Carmichael, California, was released from the hospital later Saturday. A heavily guarded caravan was seen arriving Saturday night at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Paris, apparently escorting Stone and Sadler, both 23, and Skarlatos, 22. The three friends had been traveling together in Europe. President Barack Obama telephoned them Saturday to commend and congratulate them, the White House said. They and the Frenchman who first confronted the gunman are to meet Monday with French President Francois Hollande.
French authorities are on heightened alert after Islamic extremist attacks in January left 20 people dead, including the three gunmen. In June, a lone attacker claiming allegiance to Islamic radicals beheaded his employer and set off an explosion at an American-owned factory in France, raising concerns about other scattered, hard-to-predict attacks.

BERLIN (AP) — At least one person died when two small planes collided in the air and crashed at an airshow in northern Switzerland on Sunday, police said.
The two planes were part of a formation of three and they crashed just before 11:30 local time after they touched each other in the air, according to Meinrad Stoecklin, a spokesman for police in Basel-Landschaft.
The airshow in the village of Dittingen near Basel was temporarily interrupted as rescue teams raced to the scene of the crash, police said.
It was not immediately clear if there were more injured people. Swiss media reported that one pilot managed to escape by parachute.
The two planes were part of a formation of three planes, but the third plane of the formation was not involved in the crash and landed safely, they reported.
On Saturday, seven people died and more than a dozen were injured after a military jet participating in an airshow in the UK crashed into a busy road. The Hawker Hunter fighter jet, which was participating in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton in southern England, hit several vehicles on a nearby road as it crashed. Witnesses told local TV that the jet appeared to have crashed when it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver.

(TEHRAN, Iran) — British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond reopened the British Embassy in Tehran on Sunday, nearly four years after it was closed following an attack by hard-liners.
Hammond arrived in Tehran on Sunday to attend the reopening ceremony and to hold talks with Iranian officials. The trip marked the first time a British foreign secretary has visited Tehran since 2003.
Britain has had no diplomatic presence in Tehran since hard-liners protesting the imposition of international sanctions stormed it in November 2011, but the election of President Hassan Rouhani and the recent nuclear deal between Iran and world powers have brought about a significant diplomatic thaw.
“Today’s ceremony marks the end of one long journey, and the start of a new, and, I believe, exciting one,” Hammond said, adding that reopening the embassy was the “logical next step to build confidence and trust between two great nations” after last month’s nuclear agreement.
In footage aired on the BBC, Hammond spoke from a leafy garden inside the embassy compound. He and a small group of officials then looked on as the British national anthem played and the Union flag was raised.
Terrorism, regional stability and the spread of the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq are among the challenges Britain and Iran should be prepared to work together on, Hammond said.
“Over the coming months, we will work to ensure that the nuclear agreement is a success, including by making sure that it is fully implemented by all sides, and through this embassy’s efforts we will support British trade and investment, once sanctions are lifted. That will bring benefits for Britain and the Iranian people,” he said.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif welcomed the reopening of the British Embassy, saying it showed Iran’s regional and global significance.
“The world has realized Iran’s constructive role in the region and the globe,” state TV quoted Zarif as saying Sunday. “Of course, we have differences with some European countries but that can be negotiated through interaction, with open eyes and a realistic approach.”
Hammond and the new British charge d’affaires, Ajay Sharma, were attending the embassy reopening ceremony together with representatives of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Office said.
Hammond was also accompanied by a small British trade delegation to discuss possible future trade opportunities following last month’s nuclear deal, the ministry added.
The British Embassy would initially have a small number of staff with limited consular services, but officials expect to upgrade its leadership to full ambassador status in coming months.
The Iranian Embassy in London was also supposed to be reopened Sunday in London, the semiofficial ISNA news agency said. Several Iranian and British dignitaries, including former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, were seen entering the embassy residence Sunday morning, but it was unclear exactly when the embassy would formally reopen.
Iranian hard-liners oppose the improved relations with London. Many of them had called the British Embassy the “epicenter of sedition” when they attacked it in 2011. They accused the country and its media, including the BBC, of fomenting unrest and encouraging rioters in Iran after the disputed 2009 presidential elections.
Conservative lawmaker Esmaeil Kowsari said reopening the British Embassy opens the path for London’s “penetration” into Iran.
“Given concerns over efforts by the enemy to penetrate into Iran after the nuclear deal, it was not appropriate that the British Embassy in Tehran is reopened,” the hard-line daily Kayhan quoted him as saying.
Kowsari called on Iran’s security and intelligence agencies to carefully watch British Embassy operations and “prevent conspiracies by the British government before they are carried out.”

(BAGHDAD) — At least 23 Iraqi soldiers and government-allied militiamen were killed Sunday in an attack by Islamic State militants in the turbulent Anbar province west of Baghdad, Iraqi military and police officials said.
The officials said Sunday’s attack, which killed 17 soldiers and six Sunni militia fighters, took place in the rural district of Jaramshah, north of Anbar’s provincial capital, Ramadi.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
They said the IS fighters used suicide bombings and mortar shells and that chief of army operations in Anbar, Maj-Gen. Qassim al-Dulaimi, was lightly wounded.
News of Sunday’s attack came two days after up to 50 soldiers were killed by the IS in two ambushes elsewhere in Anbar province, much of which is under IS control.
