Gunman injures three people on Amsterdam-Paris train

August 21, 2015, 9:55 PM (IDT)
A gunman seriously injured three people in the high-speed Amsterdam-Paris train Friday, before he was overpowered by passengers, identified by witnesses as a group of US Marines traveling on the train. He was armed with guns and knives. The motives behind the attack were not immediately known. The two most seriously injured victims are a Briton and an American, whom witnesses say were deliberately sought out for their nationality by the gunman. They are reported in critical condition.  The attack happened near Arras in northern France and the gunman was arrested when the train reached the town’s station. The unarmed Marines were said to have overheard the gunman loading a Kalashnikov AK-47 in the toilet. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was heading to Arras in the wake of the incident. Officials do not rule out an act of terrorism.

DHS Kept Secret the Release Of Violent Criminal Illegal Immigrants

Obama administration officials only began notifying local law enforcement officials of the release of violent criminal illegal immigrants within the last two weeks, according to Arizona law enforcement officials, who say they have for years been kept in the dark about the release of illegal immigrants back into local towns.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had been keeping secret its release of illegal immigrants with violent criminal records from local law enforcement for at least two years, denying for a time that this was taking place, law enforcement officials disclosed to the Washington Free Beacon.
The public disclosure of this practice, in which Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) frees criminal illegal immigrants back into U.S. communities, came to light earlier this week, when Arizona law enforcement was made aware that three illegal aliens with violent criminal records had been released back onto the streets.
Local law enforcement officials and members of Congress have expressed outrage over the practice and have petitioned DHS in recent days to end a policy they described as “catch and release.”
At least three illegal aliens released by DHS in recent weeks have been charged with serious crimes, including the beating of a 7-week-old baby and immolation of a person, according to local law enforcement officials and Rep Matt Salmon (R., Ariz.).
Other Arizona law enforcement officials in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office further disclosed to the Free Beacon that they still are being kept in the dark about such releases and questioned whether DHS has implemented a standard nationwide practice to alert local officials.
“When I learned that there isn’t a requirement for DHS to inform local law enforcement agencies about the imminent release of illegal alien criminals, I was shocked,” Salmon said. “In our post 9/11 world, where the constant sharing of information between agencies is commonplace, even sometimes at the expense of our rights, this is unacceptable. Simply put, if DHS insists on releasing dangerous illegal aliens into our neighborhoods the public and law enforcement need to know about it. I am now working to amend existing law to require that local agencies be notified by DHS before illegal aliens with violent criminal records are released.
“American citizens deserve to know who our federal government is forcing onto our streets and permitted to victimize our families, and I will not stop until we ensure that our local law enforcement agencies are given the tools they need to protect our communities.”
The release of violent illegal immigrants has been taking place since at least 2013, when Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was informed by senior ICE officials that illegal immigrants were being released back into his Arizona community, sources said.
Pinal County Police Department employees at the time “were called in on overtime on a Saturday and were ordered to start releasing illegals with violent criminal histories,” according to one law enforcement source.
However, when Babeu asked ICE authorities for the names and criminal offenses committed by these individuals, he was told that no one had been freed.
“They all refused to provide any of the requested information and initially told our office and the media they didn’t release anybody,” the source explained.
Reports of these releases led to congressional inquiries and the eventual disclosure by ICE that it had in fact released a few hundred illegal immigrants, though the agency claimed at the time that none of them had criminal records.
“As pressure mounted, ICE admitted they did release illegals with minor criminal offenses,” the law enforcements source said. “Eventually, they confirmed they did release violent criminal illegals including those convicted of murder, aggravated assault, robbery, kidnapping, and sex crimes.”
Following years of pressure, ICE two weeks ago began notifying Arizona law officials of the release of the three illegal immigrants mentioned above.
“We are not sure why they began to release criminals into the community without notifying local law-enforcement or why they just started to make notifications after two years,” the law enforcement source said. “Communication with local law-enforcement is a common practice among the state corrections institutions where notifications are made to local police and sheriffs when a violent criminal is released.”
“We think it reasonable to request the same courtesy when ICE releases criminals into our community rather than deport them to their home country,” the source added.
Officials say they are “perplexed as to why it took so long” to institute the notification policy.
A nationwide alert system is still “in the test phase” and has not yet been implemented across the country, according to an ICE official who was not permitted to speak on record.
On Wednesday, the Free Beacon disclosed that Rep. Matt Salmon (R., Ariz.) had petitioned DHS to explain its policy and provide an explanation for why local law enforcement had been kept in the dark.
“Despite the repeated attacks on American citizens by illegal aliens released from our jails, DHS refuses to stop freeing violent criminals who are in our country illegally,” Salmon wrote in his letter to DHS. “Just today, we learned of three more individuals set free on law-abiding Arizonans by the Department of Homeland Security. Their crimes included the beating to death of a seven-week-old baby and the stabbing, beating, and immolation of a police informant.”
One of those released is accused of kidnapping and murdering a police informant “by taking him to a wilderness area where he beat, stabbed, and lit his gasoline-soaked body on fire,” according to Salmon.
When questioned about the practice earlier this week, an ICE official explained that it can no longer legally detain these individuals and is forced under the law to release them.
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under current law can no longer legally hold the three individuals,” ICE press secretary Gillian Christensen told the Free Beacon. “To further promote public safety and transparency, ICE notified local law enforcement agencies of the release of the individuals.”

Clinton’s Email Server Firm Scrubs ‘Data-Disposal’ References from Website

The firm Hillary Clinton hired to manage her private email server quietly removed information from its website in recent days, including references to its partnership with a Colorado data-scrubbing company.
Platte River Networks, the Denver-based company that hosted Clinton’s email server, deleted several pages from its website, including a section about how it outsources its data-disposal work to a local firm called Techno Rescue. That page appears to have been removed earlier this month, but can still be viewed in a cached version on major search engines.
On the now-removed page, Platte River Networks said it provided its customers with “complimentary e-waste technology recycling” through its partnership with Techno Rescue, including the “disposal of data still residing on old technology.”
“In order to ensure our customers recycle responsibly, we provide them complimentary e-waste technology recycling,” said Platte River Networks. “We partner with Techno Rescue—a fully certified Colorado Electronics Recycling and Data Destruction E-waste company. It is illegal and socially irresponsible to throw your electronics in the trash. Responsible electronics recycling also includes the safe and proper disposal of data still residing on old technology.”
On the Techno Rescue website, Platte River Networks’ director of business development David DeCamillis said his company “use[s] Techno Rescue for all our customers technology recycling needs.”
An attorney for Platte River Networks told reporters earlier this month that Clinton’s private server was made “blank” as of June 2013 but did not clarify how this process took place.
An attorney for Clinton said this week that her email server was wiped clean of data before Platte River Networks turned it over to the FBI. Federal authorities are currently trying to recover the deleted information, according to reports.
In a recent press conference, Clinton said she did not know whether her server had been erased.
A public relations firm hired by Platte River Networks did not respond to request for comment on whether Techno Rescue had any involvement in disposing of the data from Clinton’s email server. Techno Rescue’s president, Nidal Allis, did not return calls from the Washington Free Beacon.
If a third-party company such as Techno Rescue disposed of the server data, it could add to the list of individuals who had access to Clinton’s email information—and potentially raise new security concerns.
Techno Rescue says it uses a Department of Defense standardized method for data removal that guarantees “100 percent data destruction.”
“Even if you run forensic data recovery, the disk will be clean,” Allis told the Highlands Ranch Heraldin 2009.
But the company has also come under fire for its business practices. A 2010 Colorado I-News Network investigation found that Techno Rescue was “recycling” electronics by shipping them to Hong Kong, a practice that is frowned upon for environmental and security reasons.
Techno Rescue is registered to comply with international environmental standards, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s facilities registration database.
Techno Rescue’s Iyad Allis is listed as the company’s regulatory contact in the EPA database. He was charged with selling illegal firearms and bank fraud in a 2008 FBI sting, according to court records. He ultimately pleaded guilty in 2009 to four counts of bank fraud.
A spokesperson for the Clinton campaign on Thursday afternoon did not comment on who was directly responsible for wiping the server or whether an outside company was used.
Alex McGeorge, a tech security expert at Immunity, said there are plenty of firms that will scrub servers for a price, but it is also a relatively simple process that can be done at home.
“In 10 steps that I could explain to my grandma, I could tell you how to do it,” said McGeorge.
McGeorge said there are many ways to delete data, and it can often be recovered depending on the removal technique. But he said if the information is “overwritten” with other code it could be impossible to retrieve.
In addition to deleting information about Techno Rescue from its website, Platte River Networks also removed a page that listed its top executives, a “Techno Rescue” logo from its “Partners” page, and references throughout its site to a construction firm that is one of its clients.
The small company has come under international public scrutiny in recent weeks, with the Daily Mailreporting that it was previously run out of a residential loft and housed its servers in the bathroom.

Russia Nearing Deployment of New Intermediate-Range Naval Missile

Russia is nearing deployment of a new missile capable of targeting all of Europe with nuclear or conventional warheads, according to defense officials.
Disclosure of the new SSN-30A missile threat comes as Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Thursday warned that Moscow under Vladmir Putin is reemerging as an existential security threat.
Russia “is a very, very significant threat,” Carter told reporters at the Pentagon. “And I think a point that they’ve made, but I would certainly make: Russia poses an existential threat to the United States by virtue simply of the size of the nuclear arsenal that it has.”
Regarding the SSN-30A, designated as the “Kalibr” missile, Pentagon officials said the new naval weapon can be equipped with both nuclear and conventional warheads and can reach most of Europe when fired from ships in the Black Sea.
The longer-range version of the Kalibr can reach between 620 and 923 miles. A shorter range version can hit targets at distances of up to 180 miles.
A cruise missile variant also is being developed that officials said appears to violate the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.
A test of the Kalibr was conducted earlier this month, officials said.
The new supersonic missile is capable of being used to strike targets both at sea and on land.
“This system is about ready to be deployed,” said one official who voiced concerns for U.S. interests and those of allies in Europe. “It allows the Russians to cover most of Europe from the Black Sea on naval vessels.
“They can hold all of Europe at risk,” the official said. “This is like putting SS-20s in Europe again.”
SS-20 intermediate-range nuclear missiles were withdrawn under the INF treaty in the 1980s.
Additionally, naval vessels equipped with SSN-30s also could be deployed from the Black Sea to Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea bordering Poland and Lithuania.
Russian officials have threatened to deploy short-range Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, in response to U.S. missile defense deployments in Europe.
Mark Schneider, a former Pentagon nuclear strategy expert, said the Kalibr is a capable, supersonic, very accurate nuclear and conventional missile.
The missile is expected to see “a very widespread deployment” on both submarines and surface ships, including the new type 885 Yasen class submarine, older submarines and cruisers, and newer models of destroyers.
“Thanks to 25 years of bad decisions on nuclear deterrence, we have no comparable capability,” Schneider said.
“The Obama administration in the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review Report announced the elimination of the nuclear-armed version of the Tomahawk submarine launched cruise missile,” he added. “If Putin attacks one of the vulnerable NATO states, the Kalibr will likely be one of the main threat weapons used to try to deter a NATO counter attack. Granting Putin a monopoly on almost all types of tactical nuclear weapons is plain stupid.”
Carter said Russia under President Vladimir Putin has become a new “antagonist,” following the military takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea and continuing covert arming of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
“Vladimir Putin’s Russia behaves, in some respects and in very important respects, as an antagonist. That is new. That is something, therefore, that we need to adjust to and counter,” the defense secretary said.
The Pentagon has adopted a policy called “strong and balanced,” Carter said.
“The strong part means we are adjusting our capabilities qualitatively and in terms of their deployments, to take account of this behavior of Russia,” he said, adding that the Pentagon has begun working with NATO states in new ways, such as deterring Russia and hardening borders near Russia.
Efforts also are being taken to counter Moscow’s use of “hybrid warfare,” the use of both military forces and information warfare.
The harder line approach is being balanced by continued cooperation with Moscow on counterterrorism, North Korea, and in some aspects Iran.
“So where Russia sees its interests as aligned with ours, we can work with them and will continue to do that,” Carter said.
He added that the United States “would hold open the door” to future cooperation with Russia, should its approach change.
In his remarks, Carter bolstered earlier expressions of concern from Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford, the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said during a Senate hearing last month that Russia “presents the greatest threat to our national security.”
NATO commander Gen. Philip Breedlove told PBS July 29 that Russia poses a greater danger than the Islamic State terrorist group.
Breedlove said the United States sought to make Russia a partner for the past 20 years. Instead, Moscow has “used force to change internationally recognized boundaries” by occupying Crimea and moving military forces in eastern Ukraine.
“And this is a nation that possesses a pretty vast nuclear inventory, and talks about the use of that inventory very openly in the past,” Breedlove said.
“And so what I think you see being reflected is that we see a revanchist Russia that has taken a new path towards what the security arrangements in Europe are like and how they are employed. And they talk about using, as a matter of course, nuclear weapons. For that reason, these senior leaders, I believe, see that as a major threat.”
Asked if U.S. support for NATO allies near Russia could trigger a war, Breedlove said: “Well, the best way not to have a war is to be prepared for war. So, we’re in there now, training their soldiers.”
