Dem Sen. Joe Manchin: Iran Nuclear Deal Endangers American Security

Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) declared his opposition to the nuclear agreement with Iran Tuesday, explaining that the deal effectively rewards the country for sponsoring terrorism for decades.
“As I struggled with this decision, I could not ignore the fact that Iran, the country that will benefit most from sanctions being lifted, refuses to change its 36-year history of sponsoring terrorism,” Manchin, member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in a statement Tuesday.
He labeled the Obama administration’s description of the deal as solely about nuclear weapons “false,” warning that Iran’s hypothetical possession of a nuclear bomb would be most worrisome because of the country’s sponsorship of terrorism.
“For me, this deal had to be about more than preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon for the next 10-15 years,” Manchin explained. “For me, this deal had to address Iran’s terrorist actions. Without doing so would reward Iran’s 36 years of deplorable behavior and do nothing to prevent its destructive activities.”
“The fact of the matter is that we are concerned about Iran having a bomb because, in large part, it is the world’s largest state sponsor of terror,” the Democratic lawmaker later added. “Asking us to set aside the terrorist question is irresponsible and misses the point.”
Manchin charged that the billions Iran would receive in sanctions relief would at least in part help the country fund terrorism and as a result would “further destabilize the Middle East.”
“Lifting sanctions without ensuring that Iran’s sponsorship of terrorism is neutralized is dangerous to regional and American security,” the senator warned.
“Iran is directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of U.S. soldiers,” Manchin said. “This regime has shown no signs that its deplorable behavior will change, and this deal does nothing to guarantee that behavior changes.”
With his announcement, Manchin became the fourth Democratic senator to come out against the deal, joining Sens. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), Bob Menendez (N.J.), and Ben Cardin (Md.) in their opposition of the agreement brokered in July.
Manchin insisted that a diplomatic path to disabling Tehran’s nuclear program and addressing its involvement in terrorism is still possible.
“I will support a path towards peace and diplomacy over war and aggression,” Manchin said, “but make no mistake about it: I will vote to use all of our military might to protect our homeland whenever it is threatened, defend our allies whenever they are put in harm’s way and prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
On Tuesday morning, the Associated Press reported that President Obama has rallied enough support among Senate Democrats to avoid having to veto a resolution rejecting the deal.
A majority of Americans want Congress to reject the agreement with Iran, according to pollingreleased last month.

Buffett: Clinton Made Mistake Having a Private Email Server

Billionaire business magnate and Hillary Clinton supporter Warren Buffett called the
Democraticpresidential candidate’s use of a private email server a “mistake” while sitting down with CNBC’s Becky Quick on Tuesday.
“I would say it was a mistake. It was a mistake to have the private server and I think it was a mistake, in the first talk she acknowledged the fact she would have done it differently,” Buffett said. “I think it’s better to be very blunt in those kinds of situations, say ‘I made a mistake,’ and, you know, fortunately, not result in any breach of security or confidential. But the best thing to do is get it behind you.”
Buffett repeatedly rebuked the Clinton campaign’s handling of the email scandal but was confident the candidate would be able to put the issue behind her.
Despite his self-described loathing for
super PACs in the political process, Buffett donated $25,000 to the Ready For Hillary super PAC before Clinton officially jumped into the race.
“It’s a good one because I did not know it was a super PAC. They had a maximum, which was $25,000. I think of super PACs as these things with hundreds of thousands or millions in them,” Buffett said in April. “I did not know it was a super PAC. I am not for super PACs, but it is absolutely true that I donated $25,000.”
Buffett said he would not send Clinton any major checks but will bundle money for her. The Oracle of Omaha has predicted his favorite candidate will win the presidency.
Clinton has seen her favorability numbers suffer ever since entering the presidential race in April, and the drip-drip nature of her email scandal has been an aggravating factor in the decline. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) now leads her in polling in New Hampshire and is closing in on her advantage in Iowa.

Hillary Clinton Has Lost A Third of Support Among Democrats Since Email Controversy

Hillary Clinton has sacrificed nearly one-third of her support among likely Democratic primary voters since news broke of her use of a private email system while at the State Department.
A Monmouth University poll of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters released Tuesday indicates that Clinton’s support among likely primary voters has declined from 60 percent to 42 percent since April, the month after the New York Times first reported that Clinton exclusively worked on a personal email account during her time in the Obama administration.
That means that almost one-third of those initially supporting Clinton for the Democratic nomination has now turned away from her. The sharpest drop off in Clinton supporters occurred over the last month, as the share of Democrats backing the former secretary of state has declined by 10 percent since August.
Meanwhile, support for competitor Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) has nearly tripled since April. Currently, 20 percent of likely Democratic primary voters say they will vote for Sanders.
Vice President Joe Biden, who has yet to officially announce a 2016 White House bid, has also experienced a boost, particularly over the last month. The share of Democratic voters backing Biden has grown from 12 percent in August to 22 percent in September, almost doubling.
Suspicion surrounding a potential Biden run has mounted as Clinton endures scrutiny regarding her use of private email at the State Department. The FBI began investigating the security of Clinton’s personal system after the intelligence community inspector general determined that at least two emails contained on her server hold “top secret” information that was classified at the time the messages were sent.
While Clinton has repeatedly insisted that she never sent or received information marked classified on her email, a special review recently conducted by the CIA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency confirmed I. Charles McCullough III’s findings.
Clinton’s favorable and honesty scores have eroded amid the scandal, and majorities of Americans now view her unfavorably and rate her as not trustworthy.
Tuesday’s poll indicates that Clinton’s unfavorable rating among Democratic voters is higher than those of all of her competitors. What’s more, the share of voters in her party viewing her favorably has sunk 11 percentage points since December.
