CIA Director John Brennan says the hack of his personal email account underscores that everyone is vulnerable to the compromise of personal information on the Internet.
Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) tore into President Obama Tuesday for his lack of leadership on Syria and the disastrous execution of the $500 million program to train Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State terrorist organization.
In his opening statement during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing about U.S. Middle East Strategy, McCain said Obama was acting like the “opposite” of a commander-in-chief.
In September, CENTCOM commander Gen. Lloyd Austin III testified “four or five” rebels in the program were still fighting in Syria, or roughly $100 million per fighter. However, the White House tried to shed responsibility, claiming Obama had thought all along it was a poor idea and that through the program’s failure he was vindicated in that initial judgment, the New York Times reported.
“The president now says, incredibly, the failure of his program, his program, the president’s program, proves he was right for not wanting to do it in the first place,” McCain said. “Harry Truman must be spinning in his grave. If there is an opposite for commander-in-chief, this is it.”
McCain appeared to be dinging Obama over Truman’s famous mantra, “The buck stops here.”
McCain also added Obama should never have expressed surprise about the “predictable” failure of the program.
“It was not a surprise,” McCain said. “It was completely predictable, and many of us here did predict it. Only someone who does not understand the real problem, which is the underlying conflict in Syria and Iraq, or does not care to, could think that we could effectively recruit and train large numbers of Sunni Syrians to fight only against ISIL, with no promise of coalition assistance if they came under fire from Assad’s forces.”
McCain added in his opening that the train-and-equip program was another example of the administration addressing the symptoms of an underlying problem, rather than the root of the problem itself.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Tuesday the U.S. would engage in “direct action on the ground” in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State terrorist organization, signaling a retraction of the Obama administration’s earlier pledge to put “no boots on the ground” in those countries.
“We won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground,” Carter said during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Carter pointed to last week’s rescue operation with Kurdish forces in northern Iraq to free hostages held by ISIS.Carter and Pentagon officials initially refused to characterize the rescue operation as U.S. boots on the ground. However, Carter said last week that the military expects “more raids of this kind” and that the rescue mission “represents a continuation of our advise and assist mission.”This may mean some American soldiers “will be in harm’s way, no question about it,” Carter said last week.After months of denying that U.S. troops would be in any combat role in Iraq, Carter late last week in a response to a question posed by NBC News, also acknowledged that the situation U.S. soldiers found themselves in during the raid in Hawija was combat.“This is combat and things are complicated,” Carter said.
White House Press Secretary Eric Schultz was quoted in the report as saying the White House had “no intention of long-term ground combat.”

A U.S. Navy warship sailed near one of China's artificial islands in the South China Sea Tuesday in a challenge to China's territorial claims in the area. An unnamed Pentagon official said the USS Lassen, a guided missile destroyer, sailed within 22 kilometers (12 nautical miles) of the Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands archipelago. The official told VOA on Monday a surveillance plane would likely accompany the destroyer during the mission. A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington urged the United States to "refrain from saying or doing anything provocative and act responsibly in maintaining regional peace and stability." Beijing launched a massive building project last year to transform the submerged reefs into islands that can support runways and other facilities, and has warned it will not allow any country to violate Spratly's airspace, ignoring competing claims by the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan and other Asian nations on the region. The U.S. cites international law in maintaining its position that artificial reefs do not entitle a country to a territorial water claim. The U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea states that "artificial islands, installations and structures do not possess the status of islands" and "have no territorial sea of their own." The patrol marks the most serious U.S. challenge to China's claim of territorial sovereignty around the islands. The U.S. has patrolled in the South China Sea, but never this close to the Spratly archipelago. The Navy has conducted similar patrols near artificial territories built up by the Philippines and Vietnam, according to Pentagon officials. The South China Sea is home to one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, so U.S. interests would be directly affected if China were to enforce control over the sea.

Staunton, October 27 – “A country which is not linked together by a transportation network is in fact not a single country,” Anton Orekh says; and that is what Russia now is, a place where it is far easier and less expensive to travel abroad than domestically and where the only thing linking the country together is Moscow television.
In a blog post on Ekho Moskvy yesterday, the Russian commentator observes that he will be unlikely ever to have the chance to visit Vladivostok, at least at his own expense. There are ever fewer flights, and prices for those that remain have risen astronomically, far beyond the ability of most Russians to afford (echo.msk.ru/blog/oreh/1647270-echo/).
Russians “don’t know what to do with such an enormous territory; they don’t understand how to administer or understand it,” he suggests. And the situation is only getting worse as it appears that all airlines except Aeroflot are going to die. At the very least, “no other firm can be certain about its future.”
In Soviet times, the government put up signs saying “’Fly the Jets of Aeroflot’” as if someone had a chance. Now, a choice exists: “it is possible to fly abroad,” Orekh writes; and “it has turned out that it is cheaper to fly to Paris or even the US than to another city in one’s own country.
Within Russia, however, things are very different. “In order to reach a neighboring city, one has to fly first to the capital and then from the capital to where he wants to go,” travelling “thousands of kilometers” out of his way. Moreover, “in the majority of cities, there is no normal airport.” In many, there isn’t a train station; and between them, there aren’t decent roads.
With the onset of winter, these various places nominally within the borders of the Russian Federation will be isolated from one another as if by an ocean, Orekh says.
Moscow is encouraging Russians to vacation within the country, and “who would be against that?” But it may not be possible: “there is no normal infrastructure, no communications network, and no chances to expect help if God forbid something happens.”
“In such circumstances,” he argues, “Russia is only nominally a single country, but in fact for a long time has been split into parts which exist autonomously but uninterruptedly receive valuable directives from the center where they even do not understand what the real requirements of the regions are.”
Indeed, Orekh concludes, “the only thing which connects us all together on a firm basis is the television.”
