Mikhail Lesin, former press minister and head of Gazprom Media, the holding that owns many formerly independent Russian media outlets, was found dead in the Dupont Circle hotel in the US capital late last week. Police said an autopsy was being conducted and the cause of death would be determined only after that had been completed.
The Russian embassy, which sent an official to identify Mr Lesin, said the ex-minister had died of a heart attack, a version echoed by RT, the state news outlet Mr Lesin was involved in establishing, and statements from his family carried in Russian state media.
But Russian government critics on Sunday questioned this version of events. In a Facebook post, Alfred Kokh, a former Russian prime minister who held the Gazprom Media post more than a decade before Mr Lesin, described the embassy’s statement as a “strange flight of fantasy”.
Referring to a potential US justice department and FBI investigation into Mr Lesin in connection with graft allegations, he said: “Why do [they] want so much to make everybody believe that it was a heart attack? Maybe they were afraid that Lesin tells the FBI about something in exchange for them ending the investigation?”.
In July last year, Roger Wicker, a senator from Mississippi, requested that the DoJ investigate whether Mr Lesin had violated the foreign corrupt practices act and anti-money-laundering statutes and suggested he might have business ties with people subject to us sanctions. He claimed Mr Lesin had bought multiple residences worth a total of $28m in Los Angeles and moved his immediate family there.

Mr Wicker’s request was referred to the US justice department and the FBI, which were considering it. Mr Lesin’s death means the issue is now closed.
The FBI was notified of Mr Lesin’s death but was not assisting in the matter, which was being treated by local police as a death investigation.
Another commentator who posted under the name Wolf said on VKontakte, the Russian social media site: “He is not the first one, and he will not be the last. We have had so many famous Russians murdered abroad that whenever some prominent compatriot dies outside the motherland, you have to assume that they will find poison.”
Aged 57, Mr Lesin was one of the highest-profile among the aides who helped Mr Putin rebuild Russia into a more state-centric and authoritarian polity.
Vsevolod Bogdanov, head of the Russian Journalists’ Union, called Mr Lesin the “most energetic” minister Russia had had for the past 20 years. “He was committed to not only the interests of the media industry but also the interests of the authorities,” he said.
Mr Putin’s spokesman said the president highly appreciated the “enormous contribution” Mr Lesin had made to the formation of the modern Russian media.
An engineer by training, Mr Lesin co-founded Video International, one of Russia’s leading advertising agencies, in 1990, and went on to managerial positions in state TV under president Boris Yeltsin.
As media minister between 1999 and 2004, he played a key role in the taming of Russia’s private television through the takeover of NTV, Russia’s first independent news channel then owned by Yeltsin-era oligarch Vladimir Gusinsky. Until 2009 Mr Lesin served as Mr Putin’s adviser, helping build RT, an English-language TV network that aims to enhance Russian soft power by countering western news narratives.
In late 2013, he was appointed head of Gazprom Media. But he resigned from that post at the end of 2014. Mr Lesin cited private reasons but his resignation followed an argument with Aleksei Venediktov, editor-in-chief of liberal radio station Echo of Moscow, over a journalist Mr Lesin had demanded be fired.
Two senior journalists at Gazprom Media-owned outlets said Mr Lesin had spent most of his time since his resignation in California but had remained close to Mr Putin.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany needs to send a message to the world that it's reaching the limit of its capacity to help Europe's flood of migrants, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Sunday, as he advocated restricting family reunions for Syrian refugees.
Egypt’s military intelligence detained one of the country’s leading investigative journalists and human rights advocates on Sunday, a move that comes amid international scrutiny on Cairo over a Russian airline crash.
The detention of Hossam Bahgat, 36, has been widely regarded as a signal of the Egyptian government’s ongoing clampdown on its critics.
The circumstances of Bahgat’s detention remain unclear. He appeared for interrogation by the military intelligence in Cairo on Sunday morning. The independent news website Mada Masr, where Bahgat is a contributor, reported that the journalist had been handed over to military prosecutors. Bahgat also told his outlet that he may face charges of publishing “false information that harms national interests.”
As a journalist, Bahgat is known for meticulous investigative reporting for Mada Masr, a respected English-Arabic organization founded in 2013. Prior to entering journalism, Bahgat was a giant of Egypt’s human rights movement. In 2002, he founded the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), the country’s premier rights group.
“Hossam Bahgat is being formally charged by the military prosecution. He still doesn’t know what charges & has asked for lawyers,” tweeted Heba Morayef, the current associate director of EIPR.
“We are waiting outside the military court complex,” she said in an update published later on Sunday evening. “Hossam’s lawyers have all gone in, no phones allowed so updates once they come out.”
Bahgat has published a series of detailed exposés about the military judiciary that is now holding him in custody. His most recent piece explores a secret military trial of 26 officers accused of plotting a coup. Last year he wrote one of the most illuminating reports to date on Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the Sinai-based militant group that later declared itself part of the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS). The militant group claims it brought down the Russian passenger plane that crashed in Sinai on October 31, killing all 224 people on board.
There is mounting concern that a smuggled bomb may have exploded inside the plane. A member of the multi-nation committee investigating the crash told Reuters on Sunday that investigators are “90% sure” that a sound picked up by plane’s flight recorders was caused by a bomb.
Egypt’s President, Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, is currently facing international scrutiny over the Russian plane crash. Since coming to power in the aftermath of a military takeover, Sisi has presented himself as a champion of counterterrorism. Critics argue that the government’s campaign against political opposition has been detrimental to the fight against the insurgents.
“The arrest of Hossam Bahgat today is yet another nail in the coffin for freedom of expression in Egypt,” Philip Luther, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Amnesty International, said in a statement. “The Egyptian military cannot continue to consider itself above the law and immune from criticism.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein also said she hoped this incident is a “wake-up call to Putin” and the United States. “I think the time has come for us also to begin to develop a joint strategy with Russia,” she said.
She also expressed some frustration that perhaps the United States has not been sharing information about terrorist attacks with other countries.
