SANIBEL, FL -

A Sanibel Island police officer was injured during a drive-by shooting Sunday in an incident that has never occurred in the city's history. 

The situation began around 8 p.m. when the officer, identified as Jarred Ciccone, was hit in the shoulder while conducting a traffic stop.

The gunman fled the scene and was eventually located in the Dunes neighborhood where a shootout ensued between the man and responding officers.

The police chief said the suspect lives in the neighborhood and was inside his home in the 1400 block of Sandcastle Road when the gunfight occured. 

The suspect was struck by gunfire in the shoulder and back before being taken into custody. 

While police have not released the suspect's name, a man by the name of Jon Webster Hay with a Sandcastle Road address was booked into the Lee County Jail early Monday morning on a charge of Homicide. 

The officer in this situation, however, is expected to be OK. We are working to find out the reason behind the homicide charge. 

Officer's condition 

The officer involved was shot in the shoulder and taken to the Lee Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released. 

Officer Ciccone has been a member of the Sanibel Police Department for a number of years. 

In fact, in May of last year, he was named Officer of the Year by the Lee County Bar Association for using a defibrillator to save a woman's life. 

Neighbors react 

The incident comes as a shock to neighbors as it is the first time something like this has happened in the city's history. 

Residents of the Dunes neighborhood were told to lock their doors and stay away from all windows. 

"The officer had been shot, and the person was running around the dunes, and that we were to lock all of our doors," recalled neighbor Hubert Whitaker. 

The police department gave the neighborhood the all clear a few hours after the incident.
