Russian Tourist 'Raped In Sharm El-Sheikh'

Police have arrested a minibus driver for allegedly raping a Russian tourist in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.
The suspect was driving the woman and her husband back to their hotel after a night-out when he pretended the vehicle had broken down, officers said.
He then tricked the Russian man into getting out of the minibus before speeding off with his wife.
The 23-year-old suspect attacked the woman, 36, and left her on the side of the road, according to Egyptian news website Ahram Online.
In March, a British businesswoman was allegedly raped in a five-star hotel in the same resort.
The woman, aged in her 40s, said she was sexually assaulted by a security guard who escorted her to her room.
The Egyptian government recently passed a law imposing harsher penalties for sex attacks.
President Abdel Fattah al Sisi vowed to crack down on such crimes, after footage appeared in the world's media of men sexually assaulting a woman during a rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square.
Thirteen men are to stand trial over the attack.

U.S. Spy Scandal in Germany Is Music to Putin’s Ears | TIME

The American habit of spying on its European allies turned out to be one of the more memorable topics to come up in April when Vladimir Putin held his annual call-in show on Russian television. Toward the end of the four-hour marathon of questions for the Russian President, Putin was asked about the tone of his conversations with European leaders. He gave a wry response. “It’s hard to talk to people who speak in whispers to each other even when they’re at home, because they’re scared the Americans are eavesdropping,” Putin said, causing a wave of laughter spread across the studio audience. “Listen, I’m being serious,” he deadpanned. “I’m not kidding.”
But it must have been hard for him not to smile at the latest U.S. spying scandal this week. Germany on Thursday asked the resident spy chief at the American embassy in Berlin to leave the country after German authorities uncovered two spies in the course of a week, both of them allegedly selling secrets to the U.S. from inside the German intelligence service.
The depth of the outrage left no one laughing in the German capital, though there was no doubt something comical in the whole affair. As Thomas de Maiziere, the German Minister of Interior, put it in a statement on Thursday: “The information reaped by this suspected espionage is laughable.” He did not say exactly what the information was, but German media have reported that it pertained to a parliamentary investigation into past allegations of American spying in Berlin.
“That’s so stupid that one can only cry at the foolishness of it,” the influential German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said, adding in televised comments that Chancellor Angela Merkel is “not amused” by the latest scandal.
Neither is the diplomatic corps in Washington. With the West locked in its worst dispute with Russia since the Cold War, the U.S. and Europe need to form a united front against the Kremlin more now than at any point in a generation. That much was clear on Wednesday when Victoria Nuland, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, went before the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee to discuss the standoff with Russia.
The Senators demanded to know why the U.S. had not moved ahead with another round of sanctions to punish Russia for its military incursions in Ukraine, instead only making what Bob Corker, the committee’s ranking Republican, called “hollow threats.” Looking down at Nuland from his desk, Corker added, “It has to be very frustrating to continue to wake up in the mornings and look in the mirror and practice talking tough, but know that nothing’s going to happen.” The diplomat replied that the White House did not want to move against Russia alone and was waiting for the Europeans to come on board. “As the President has said, these sanctions will be more effective, they will be stronger, if the U.S. and Europe work together,” Nuland said.
But the following day, it became much harder for that cooperation to move ahead when Germany asked the top U.S. intelligence official in Berlin to get out. Making the case for another round of Western sanctions against Russia requires a great deal of intelligence sharing between the U.S. and its European allies. Their spy agencies need to provide each other with evidence of Russian meddling in eastern Ukraine, evidence that is often obtained through espionage. So however laughable the substance of U.S. spying in Germany may have seemed to officials in Berlin, their response has severed a key channel for exactly that kind of confidential communication with Washington.
For Russia, that is fantastic news. The state-run media in Moscow splashed the latest blow to U.S.-German ties across their headlines on Thursday evening, and as Putin has long made clear, he would love for the Europeans to reconsider their transatlantic alliances. “The modern world, and especially the Western world, is very monopolized,” Putin said during his call-in show in April. “Many Western countries, however unpleasant this may be for them to hear, they have willingly given up a significant part of their sovereignty. In part this is the result of the policy of forming blocs.”
The blocs Putin was referring to were the European Union and NATO, the military alliance that Russia sees as a strategic threat to its security. Over the years Putin has made no secret of his desire to see NATO downsized if not dismantled, and amid his recent standoff with the West over Ukraine, he has made a point to sew discord within that bloc of Western nations, most recently and publicly during his call-in show this spring. Just after his joke about European leaders whispering in their kitchens, the hosts of the tightly choreographed program took a call from Berlin, where a Hungarian political commentator named Gabor Stier asked Putin a somewhat leading question: “Aren’t you afraid that the U.S. will spoil Russia’s relations with Europe for a long time to come?”
Putin’s response was winding, but it ended with an anecdote meant to embarrass the current Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Years ago, when Rasmussen was still serving as the Prime Minister of Denmark, he asked for a private meeting with Putin, who said he was glad to oblige. “It turns out he took a tape recorder with him, secretly recorded our conversation and then published it in the press,” Putin claimed. “What kind of trust could there be after such incidents?”
NATO dismissed the allegations as “complete nonsense” and claimed Putin was simply trying to “divert attention” away from Russia’s meddling in Ukraine. But that probably wasn’t the aim of the anecdote. Putin’s more likely goal was to make the members of the NATO alliance suspect each other of spying and, ultimately, to erode the trust on which that alliance is based. Already the fallout from Germany’s latest spy scandal with the U.S. seems to have achieved something close to that very outcome, and if it leads to a rupture in their relationship, Putin will surely be able to allow himself a mischievous smile.

Vladimir Putin meets Fidel Castro in Cuba

The formation of a new international development bank that will be portrayed as an alternative to Western-dominated institutions is expected to be unveiled at the summit in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza.
His wooing of Latin America has come as Russia has been excluded from recent gatherings of the G8 group of leading industrial powers.
But Mr Putin has long sought to undermine what he believes is American and Western European domination of international agencies, even before his policies in Ukraine resulted in the imposition of US sanctions on prominent Russians.
Russia is also seeking new military cooperation agreements in Latin America, where some left-leaning leaders have distanced their countries from traditional US influence and anger over American eavesdropping programmes is strong.
The Russian leader will also visit Argentina, whose president, Cristina Kirchner, recently drew parallels between Crimea and the Falkland Islands, and he will attend the closing ceremony in Rio de Janeiro of the World Cup as leader of the host nation for the 2018 tournament.
Mr Putin will meet with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, while he is in Rio. Germany has close trade ties with Russia and the two leaders speak frequently.
Mrs Merkel has been far less critical of Mr Putin over Russian interference is Ukraine than the US and she also has her own conflicts with Washington over its espionage operations in Germany.
Russia’s wooing of improved commercial links in Latin America comes as new figures indicate the economic impact of its belligerence in Ukraine.
Capital flight from the country reached $75 billion in the first half of this year, the country’s central bank reported, and the economy is stagnant.

Vladimir Putin dropped in on one of Russia's old Cold War allies on Friday, as he began a six-day tour of Latin American with a state visit to Cuba.
The tour included a rare public appearance with the country's revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, who has been seen in public since the start of the year.
Putin and the 87-year-old leader met to discuss international relations and the economy, as Moscow sought to strengthen ties with its old friend.

The Russian president was also pictured embracing Fidel Castro's younger brother Raul, who took over leadership in 2008.
The meetings have been seen by analysts as further attempts to snub the West over its Ukraine sanctions.
Cuba and the other countries Putin is due to visit on the trip have been sympathetic or not overly critical of Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.
In Cuba, the state-run papers have tended to portray it as a struggle against right-wing extremism that has been threatening ethnic Russians living in Ukraine.
Earlier this year, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez criticized U.S. and European Union sanctions imposed on Russians and pro-Russian Ukrainians.
'In the international arena, we agree with the current policy of strength and political intelligence that the Soviet Union - I mean Russia - is carrying out,' Castro said.

Before leaving for his Latin America tour, Putin also made remarks on cyber-espionage, saying: 'This is not just blatant hypocrisy in relations between allies and partners.
According to the Business Recorder Putin, whose country provided asylum to Ed Snowden, said: 'It is also direct infringement of a country's sovereignty and a breach of human rights, an invasion of privacy.'
His comments came as the CIA chief based in Berlin was asked to leave over allegations that the U.S. spied on Germany's Angela Merkel.
In Cuba, Castro and Putin strengthened their ties, using the official tour to sign about a dozen accords in energy, industry, health and disaster prevention.
Shortly before the visit, Moscow wrote off more than $35 billion of Cuba's Soviet-era debt.
Speaking about the debt agreement, which clears 90 percent of what Cuba owes, Raul Castro said it was 'another great, tangible generosity of the Russian people toward Cuba.'
In a further sign of Putin turning his back on the West, the Cuban government website announced that Russian companies are to take part in petroleum projects around Boca de Jaruco on Cuba's north coast, and that cooperation will extend to offshore oil deposits.

Another agreement covered infrastructure at a new port project that Cuba hopes will become a regional shipping center and attract much-needed foreign investment.
'We are talking about the possibility of creating in Cuba a grand transportation hub with a possible modernization of the maritime port of Mariel and the construction of a modern airport with its respective cargo terminal,' Putin said, according to an official Spanish translation of his remarks in Russian.
According to the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS, Putin spent about an hour with retired revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
The men are said to have discussed a range of topics including international affairs, the economy and Russian-Cuban relations.
The Cuba visit included official duties, in which Putin and Raul Casto took part in a ceremony at Havana's Memorial to the Soviet Internationalist Soldier.
Putin also used the visit to reiterate Russia's opposition to the 52-year-old U.S. embargo against Cuba, which was enforced to isolate the communist-run state.

Havana and Moscow have a shared history dating to the Cold War, when they were united by ideology and opposition to U.S. influence.
They drifted apart in the 1990s, however, as the collapse of the Soviet Union ended billions of dollars in trade and subsidies for Cuba.
After leaving Havana, Putin is due to travel to Argentina, whose President has accused the U.S. and Britain of having double standards.
In March, Cristina Fernandez rebuked the countries for criticizing a pro-Russian secession vote in Crimea while backing a status referendum in the Falkland Islands.
From Argentina, Putin will travel to Brazil, which was among several countries that opposed Russia being excluded from the G20 summit in Australia.
'We are grateful to South Americans for the support of our international initiatives, including outer space demilitarization, strengthening international information security and combating the glorification of Nazism,' Putin said in an interview before the trip.

Russia said in February that it was looking to expand its worldwide military presence, including asking permission for its navy ships to use ports in Cuba and elsewhere in Latin America.
A Russian intelligence-gathering vessel has docked in Havana on multiple occasions in recent months.
Putin plans to attend a presidential summit of the BRICS group of nations in Fortaleza, Brazil, in the coming days.
He is to be in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for the World Cup final and ceremonial handover of host duties for soccer's marquee tournament, which next takes place in Russia in 2018.

BBC News - Negative views of Russia and Putin on the rise globally

Russia's global image is increasingly negative, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center.
This is despite Russians believing that President Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine would improve the country's reputation abroad.
Pew Research found that increasing numbers of people around the world held unfavourable views of Russia and its president, especially in Europe and the United States.
And as the violence in Ukraine continues, 60% of people there had negative views of Russia - a huge increase from 11% in 2011.
The BBC's Ashley Semler looks at the results.
