Investigators consider possibility Pyongyang contracted out work in last month’s cyber-attack on Sony Pictures
US investigators believe that North Korea most likely hired hackers from outside the country to help with last month’s cyber-attack against Sony Pictures, an official close to the investigation has said.
The official said that since North Korea lacked the capability to conduct some elements of the sophisticated campaign by itself, American investigators were looking at the possibility that Pyongyang “contracted out” some of the work.Continue reading...

The United States imposed sanctions on Monday on four more Russians tied to allegations of human rights abuses. Two officials — Deputy Prosecutor General Victor Grin and Andrei Strizhov, an investigator — were said to be involved in the cover-up of the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who died in prison after exposing large-scale corruption, a senior State Department official said. Visa bans and asset freezes were also imposed on two senior officials of the Chechen Republic implicated in the kidnapping and torture of a Chechen activist, Ruslan Kutayev. The Treasury Department identified the Chechen officials as Apti Alaudinov, deputy minister of internal affairs, and Magomed Daudov, chief of staff of the executive office.

At first, Pussy Riot’s new video of protest looks like a sexy perfume commercial. It is actually a call to action, asking Russian dissenters to demonstrate outside the Kremlin Tuesday for the sentencing of opposition leader Alexei Navlny.
In “Witches of Pussy Riot clean Manezhku,” the camera zeroes in on members Masha Alekhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova, joined by other female activists — as they put lipstick on puckered lips, pull stockings up their legs, and fly off on broomsticks to go to a demonstration at Manezhka square.
“This is above all a propaganda video,” Tolokonnikova told BuzzFeed News. “It’s a play on the classic stereotype that for girls/princesses/Cinderellas, the most important thing is a prince/date/man, and the place of the prince is taken by politics.”
