Staunton, January 2 – The boom in linguistic borrowings from English into Russian came to an abrupt end in 2014, psycho-linguist Aleksey Mikheyev says, with only two such terms entering everyday language – “selfie” and “fake.” But in their place arrived a large number of new words reflecting and thereby intensify hatred of Ukraine and the West.
Mikheyev tells “Moskovsky Komsomolets” that the appearance of new words is important because “events in the world define the words we use. But there is a reverse process, one in which events in a definite way are colored and acquire this or that shade of meaning thanks to the words which we use to describe them” (mk.ru/social/2015/01/01/krymnash-i-psaknut-uchenye-nazvali-novye-glavnye-slova-2014-goda.html).
And he says that the two most frequently used new words in Russian over the last 12 months were “Krymnash” (Crimea is Ours) and “psaknut’” (a reference to a US State Department spokesman that is commonly defined by Russians to mean “to say something stupid but not admit it”)(pikabu.ru/story/v_seti_poyavilsya_novyiy_termin_quotpsaknutquot_2271324).
“Unfortunately,” the linguist continues, “2014 was a year of the expansion ofhte lexicon of anger and hatred. Its chief characteristic was the manipulation to one or another degree of mass consciousness by the use of aggressive formulations. In the conflict situation, words became a weapon, and in 2014, this problem eclipsed all others.”
But compared to the year before, the number of new words entering widespread use among Russians was relatively small, in large part because of the decline of the application of “-ing” ending to the names of Duma members to indicate certain habits of thought such as “mizuling” or “pekhting.”
Another aspect of this, Mikheyev says, is a process by which broader meaning is given to particular place names like Bolotnaya which has become a symbol of liberalism and Pokonnaya which is linked to conservatism. How long that will prove to be the case is very much an open question, the linguist says.
One word that entered the language briefly in 2014 but has since disappeared is “depardirovat,” a reference to Gerard Depardieu’s decision to take Russian citizenship and one formed by combining his name with the more familiar verb “deportirovat” but with the new one having the opposite meaning.
The verb “psaknut” which derives from the name of Jane Psaki of the US State Department may have a similar fate, although at present it is generating terms like “psaki” which Russians are applying to statements by anyone that are deemed to be unreliable but presented in a sententious fashion.
Another category of terms likely to be short-lived are “euphemisms” like “humanitarian convoy” and “polite people” by which “the authorities seek to avoid conflict even if someone will call these hypocritical.” Mikheyev adds that he hopes that in the new year, “good sense will win out.”
And he concludes that the Russian people not their rulers will ultimately decide on the directions their language goes, using the population to try to think about others not with the negative words that many are using now but with more positive ones. If people do that, Mikheyev says, they will be surprised at how different the world looks.

Window on Eurasia: Putin Putting Russia at Risk by Cutting Vodka Prices, Anti-Drinking Group Saysby paul goble (noreply@blogger.com)
Paul Goble
Staunton, January 2 – Vladimir Putin may have improved his own political health by announcing plans to cut the minimum price for vodka – Russian leaders in the past who have boosted prices or otherwise restricted access to alcohol have usually paid a high price – but what he has done, an anti-drinking group says, comes at the price of the health of the Russian people.
In a December 29 letter to the Kremlin leader published in “Izvestiya” today, the Russian Coalition for Alcohol Control asks him to reverse his decision lest there be a dramatic rise in alcohol consumption and “a colossal growth” in mortality rates” among Russians as has happened in the past when prices have been cut (izvestia.ru/news/581505).
According to the authors of the appeal, the reduction in minimum prices for vodka and permission for television advertising of that product will lead “to the growth of mortality connected with alcohol us, illnesses and social problems,” and will prevent Russia from achieving the life expectancy goals Putin promised for 2018 in his May 2012 order.
Moscow is reducing the price by cutting taxes on each bottle of low-end vodka sold. According to Darya Khalturina, a leader of the Russian Coalition for Alcohol Control, Moscow acted on the basis of “disinformation” from the leaders of Tatarstand and Bashkortostan where there are two major producers of such vodka.
They faced, the leaders of these Middle Volga republics said, stiff competition from cheaper vodka being brought in from Kazakhstan and sought a reduction in the price of vodka produced in Russia not only to fight that but also to ensure that they would be able to collect taxes and thus come closer to balancing their budgets.
Vadim Drobiz, the director of the Center for Research on the Federal and Regional Alcohol Markets, said that it was certainly the case that regional producers and thus regional governments would benefit more from the reduction in prices for low-end vodka because the big national companies can’t make a profit on that category because of high distribution costs.
At the same time, he added in the words of “Izvestiya” that “for legal producers of vodka,” cutting prices by cutting taxes on the low-end brands would mean that consumers would find it practically impossible to “distinguish it from contraband,” a term that includes everything from vodka produced off the books by regular producers to potentially dangerous samogon, the Russian term for moonshine.

Deadly New Year: Tragedies mar festivities around the worldby The European Union Times
For many people around the world, New Year was a time of celebration and joy, but for some it was quite the opposite. Stabbings, mortar shelling, massive fires and a fatal stampede all hit seasonal revels, causing havoc and heartbreak.
Stampede ‘over fake money’ kills dozens
At least 36 people were killed in China’s Shanghai on New Year’s Eve in a stampede, city authorities said. It was later reported that they rushed to pick up what turned out to be fake US money bills thrown from a building in Chen Yi Square in the city’s Bund waterfront district.
An eyewitness said the coupons, which looked like banknotes, were thrown from a bar above the street as part of the New Year’s celebration.
“It’s too cruel. People in front of us had already fallen to the floor, and others were stepping all over them,” said another witness, Cui Tingting, 27, who had picked up some of the coupons. However, local police denied that the fake money was the cause.
President Xi Jinping ordered the Shanghai city government to conduct a swift investigation into the tragedy.
Afghan army shells wedding
Afghanistan is not among the countries celebrating western New Year, but it had its share of tragedy. For reasons that were not immediately clear, the Afghan army mortar shelled a wedding party in southern Helmand, killing dozens of guests.
With hundreds of guests, many of them women and children, present, the attack turned to be pretty deadly. At least 26 people were killed on the spot while more than 40 sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.
“What we know so far is that our soldiers fired mortar rounds from three outposts but we do not know whether it was intentional,” General Mahmoud, deputy commander of the Afghan 215 Corps in the province, told Reuters.
Helmand province is one of Afghanistan’s most troubled, with Taliban fighters regularly clashing with government security forces.
French nurse kills ex-girlfriend, party guests
A tragedy occurred on New Year’s Eve in France’s St Catherine, in the north of the country. A 45-year-old male nurse brought a shotgun to a family party and killed three guests, including his former girlfriend. Two others were injured, one of them seriously enough to be taken to hospital for intensive care.
The assailant then drove away in his car and was chased by police. The man eventually turned the firearm on himself, local authorities said.
The killing spree came as a shock to the usually quiet French community, AFP reported.
“This is a very quiet, peaceful area – there is never any trouble. We are all in a state of absolute shock. You just don’t expect this kind of thing to happen over the holidays,” one local resident said.
The nurse’s name was not reported, but he is said to have a history of domestic violence.
UK axe attack
One person died and several others were wounded after a pub in Plymouth, south west England, was attacked by a man or men wielding an axe and a knife. Police were called at approximately 01:30 GMT. Two men, aged 20 and 21, have both been arrested on suspicion of murder.
A 27-year-old died on-site and two of the attack’s victims have been hospitalized after suffering stab wounds. Police have requested that witnesses to come forward to aid with the investigation.
Massive fire torches Philippines slums
Hundreds of shanty dwellings in a slum in the Philippines’ capital, Manila, have been destroyed by a huge fire, which is believed to have been started by firecrackers set off by children during New Year celebrations.
The fire erupted after dawn and was quickly spread by strong winds through a nearly kilometer-long row of shanty dwellings stretching along a creek, AP reported. The agency didn’t say whether there were any casualties in the blaze.
Slum residents were trying to save their possessions and pets as the flame was spreading. Some used makeshift floating devices to cross the creek. Firefighters had problems responding to the emergency as their vehicles found it difficult to navigate the narrow passages of the slums.
“It’s really a tragic way to welcome the New Year,” said Noel Carino, a local official.
At least 14 fires were reported across the Philippines on New Year’s Eve night, two of them killing a total of seven people, a firefighting official told the media. Thousands of residents were displaced after their homes were destroyed or damaged.
Over 100 injured by fireworks in Italy
European revelers are no more immune to consequences of reckless firework displays than their Asian counterparts. At least 102 people were injured in Italy by fireworks and firecrackers during the New Year’s Eve celebration, La Repubblica newspaper reported.
The southern region of Campania was hit from fireworks, with 71 injuries reported to medics. In Naples, a 10-year-old boy was hurt as he was setting off fireworks.
The number of casualties is expected to rise as information from across the country is being compiled. Last year, some 350 Italians were injured by fireworks.
