M.N.: The West did not lose Russia, it was ready to embrace her, sincerely and trustingly, some minor mistakes and miscalculations of 1990-s notwithstanding. Russia, it appears, lost The West for now: tragically, blindly, in her "sleepwalking trance" induced by her historical and resurgent, revengeful criminal imperial mentality and the criminal predatory political personalities of her current leaders, not necessarily by those in the official government (including some military leaders) who might be sober minded and reasonable enough, but by the shadowy ruling clan of the nouveau riche mafia oligarchs and their puppets, with "mad czar" Putin as their chief "The Thief-In-Law". That's where the main incompatibility lies.
His facial expression on the above photo: his true face behind the mask of propriety, full of the open hatred towards The West, rage, brazen aggression (calculating and strategically counting on the opponent's "strategic patience") and loathing of the cornered rat, is enough to understand what he really is about. He and his circle are fighting for their personal and political survival with the animal vehemence and shrewdness.
When they are gone and Russia awakens from her trance, she will return to her Western cultural and historical family. Hopefully.

Vladimir Putin: We’re asked to accept that Russia's president intends to re-establish control of nations that once were part of the USSR — even if it means going to war against the U.S.-led West

How did it all come to this? The oft-repeated explanation is that Putin is a power-mad bully. Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile. Show him force and he’ll back off. Hawks in the U.S. and here rattle their sabres, demanding that he be faced down.
...
What we say in the UK doesn’t matter — despite the Russian bombers off Portsmouth. The same is true for the rest of Europe. Only America, as leader of the West, counts. So is President Obama, who leaves office in January 2017, likely to announce the U.S. will work to achieve George H.W. Vladimir Putin and his top apparatchiks should face international justice over the annexation of Crimea, Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko demanded today.
Vowing to win back the Black Sea peninsula in future, Poroshenko alleged the rights of people in the annexed region had been repressed under Kremlin control.
His demands came as Kiev delayed a promised pullback of heavy weapons from the front line in eastern Ukraine, saying continuous attacks from rebel troops means they cannot safely withdraw.

Poroshenko used an address on the first anniversary of the start of the annexation to promise his country will regain control over the peninsula.
'I am not going to say today that it will happen quickly and easily,' admitted the pro-Western president.
'But it will definitely happen, we shall build together a new Crimea, where the rights and interests of the indigenous people of Crimea and all the inhabitants of the peninsula, regardless of their ethnic, language and religious background, will be guaranteed.'
He went on to demand Putin faces international justice over the annexation of Crimea.
'The time will come, and anyone who has committed and will commit a crime against the Ukrainian state and human rights in Crimea, will face international and Ukrainian trials,' he said.
He wants Russian officials to stand trial in The Hague, said the Kiev media.

Despite pro-Russian rebels making new inroads in eastern Ukraine in the past month, Poroshenko claimed his country 'will never give up its sovereign rights to Crimea.'
'Ukraine will defend by all available means the rights of people, who live there. There is a complete consensus on this issue,' said.
The annexation - which began one year ago - was a 'vile act carried out contrary to international law', he said.
With rebels massing near the strategic port of Mariupol, in violation of a ceasefire, Kiev refused to pull back its heavy weapons, claiming its forces were still be targeted by separatists.
'As Ukrainian positions are still being fired upon there can be no talk yet of a withdrawal of arms,' said military spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov .
Moscow denies giving military support to the rebels. But Russia made the same denials over Crimea before admitting that it had deployed troops.
If Mariupol falls to the pro-Russian rebels, it would remove a key obstacle to creating a separatist land corridor stretching from Russia's border with Ukraine to Crimea.

This morning military spokesman Lt. Col. Anatoliy Stelmakh told reporters that Ukraine will begin its delayed withdrawal of heavy weapons from the front line in the east of the country only when rebel attacks entirely stop, in line with a cease-fire that was supposed to begin February 15.
Stelmakh said there were two rebel artillery attacks overnight and although this is significantly fewer than in previous days, 'as long as firing on Ukrainian military positions continues, it's not possible to talk about a pullback.'
Colonel Valentyn Fedichev, deputy commander of the military operation against the rebels, said there had been 27 attacks against Ukrainian forces over the past 24 hours, which he said was lower than in recent days. He also indicated that no pullback was imminent.
'If the enemies continue to use their own heavy weapons, it is clear that Ukraine will continue to counteract these operations,' he said.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's observer mission in Ukraine is supposed to be monitoring the weapons withdrawal.
Its spokesman, Michael Bocuirkiw today said the monitors had seen heavy weapons movements by both sides but could not tell whether weapons were being pulled back or just being redeployed.
An Associated Press reporter today saw Ukrainian forces moving back from around the town of Debaltseve, which was captured last week by rebel forces after a fierce week-long siege.
Both Stelmakh and Fedichev said rebels are still trying to overrun a Ukrainian government position in the village of Shyrokyne, on the outskirts of the strategic port city of Mariupol.
Rebels began moving toward Mariupol last August, raising concerns they were seeking to seize the city in order to establish a land corridor between mainland Russia and the Russia-annexed Crimean peninsula.
Russia has denied arming the rebels, a denial scoffed at by Western nations and NATO, who point to satellite pictures of Russian weapons in Ukraine.

GERMAN DOCTORS VISITED DETAINED UKRAINIAN PILOT IN RUSSIA

German doctors have been allowed to visited Ukrainian military pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, who has been on hunger strike for more than two months in a Russian jail, a German Foreign Ministry spokesman said today.
Savchenko, 33, was captured by pro-Russian forces and handed over eight months ago to Russia, where she was imprisoned on charges of aiding the killing of two Russian journalists in east Ukraine. At home, she has become a symbol of resistance to Russian aggression.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to allow the humanitarian visit during talks on a ceasefire for eastern Ukraine in Minsk on Feb. 11-12, spokesman Martin Schaefer said.

Two German doctors visited her on February 15, then held talks with her prison doctors, in which Savchenko was included.
Savchenko is reported to have lost 37 lb since going on a water and glucose diet in December.
Schaefer told a regular government news conference that Germany was extremely concerned about her health, and repeated an appeal for her release.
He gave no further details of her condition, and said it was regrettable that reports had appeared in Russian media despite an agreement to maintain confidentiality.
Russia's Investigative Committee says the pilot provided the coordinates of two Russian journalists who were killed by a mortar attack in June in the Luhansk region of east Ukraine, held by pro-Russian rebels. She denies the accusation, but could be jailed for up to 20 years if found guilty.
Steinmeier is a member of the traditionally Russia-friendly Social Democrats and has long ties with Putin, although he has stuck closely to Chancellor Angela Merkel's tough line with Moscow over its backing of separatists in east Ukraine.

We round up all this year’s key soundbites, as they’re served up at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood
Tonight we celebrate Hollywood’s best and whitest, sorry… brightest.
If you’re lucky enough to have a parent or two alive, call them. Don’t text, don’t email. Call them. Listen to them for as long as they want to talk to you.

Thank you, Wes. You’ve been a great inspiration. You are like an actor, a great composer and you inspire all of us. If it wasn’t for you I couldn’t have done it this way.
We made a film about the need for silence and withdrawal… and here we are at the epicentre of noise and excitement. Life is full of surprises.

Tonight we are here to celebrate story tellers… your voice can be shared without fear of personal or professional attack. We honour the courage of filmmakers who cross borders and test boundaries.
They filled our lives so much, the films they were in made us laugh, think and cry. Through their work they shared a piece of our soul. We will miss them with the sadness with which we miss an old friend.
I want to thank the person who once never threw a chair at my head, but always pushed to make it better: Damien Chazelle - your art changed my life.
We don’t stand here alone, it’s possible through the great organisations that support us. The disclosures that Edward Snowden revealed aren’t only a threat to privacy but to democracy, when the most important decisions made affect all of us. Thank you to Edward Snowden. I share this with Glenn Greenwald and other journalists who are exposing truth.
The subject of Citizenfour, Edward Snowden, could not be here for some treason.
Benedict Cumberbatch is not only the best name in show business, it’s also the response you get when you ask John Travolta to pronounce Ben Affleck.
Recently, John and I got to go to Selma and perform it on the same bridge that Martin Luther King walked over. I can’t believe 50 years have gone by since that film was released. I blinked and suddenly here I am. We all really felt blessed and as for me; how lucky can a girl get. Great music does more than enhance a film, it cements our memories in the film going experience.
When I was 16 years old I tried to kill myself because I felt different and that I didn’t belong. Now I’m here, and I want this moment to be for that kid who feels weird or different. Stay weird, stay different.
Tonight, I am wearing the real Michael Keaton tighty whities. This is crazy: talking about that little prick called ego. Ego loves competition because for someone to win, someone has to lose, but the paradox is that true art, and true individual expression as all the work of these incredible fellow film makers is, can’t be compared or labelled or defeated because they exist, and our work will only be judged by time.

Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour wins Oscar

Laura Poitras’ film about Edward Snowden and the NSA spying revelations carries off Academy award for non-fiction films
Citizenfour has won the Oscar for best documentary, for its director Laura Poitras, editor Mathilde Bonnefoy and producer Dirk Wilutzky.
Collecting the award, Poitras, flanked by journalist and collaborator Glenn Greenwald, said: “The disclosures of Edward Snowden don’t only expose a threat to our privacy but to our democracy itself. When the decisions that rule us are taken in secret we lose the power to control and govern ourselves.” Poitras thanked Edward Snowden for his “sacrifices”, and added: “I share this award with Glenn Greenwald and the many other journalists who are taking risks to expose the truth.”
“When Laura Poitras asked me if she could film our encounters, I was extremely reluctant. I’m grateful that I allowed her to persuade me. The result is a brave and brilliant film that deserves the honour and recognition it has received. My hope is that this award will encourage more people to see the film and be inspired by its message that ordinary citizens, working together, can change the world.”
“Congratulations to Laura Poitras. When she filmed Snowden, Glenn Greenwald and myself in Hong Kong, it never occurred to me she had something as ambitious as CitizenFour in mind.
I did not even give much thought to why she was filming: just assumed she wanted a record of events for some undisclosed reason, maybe a low-budget film to be used by privacy campaigners. It came as a surprise when I finally saw it, the sheer professionalism of it, and I had no doubt from that point she would win an Oscar.

Australian Leader Outlines Tough New Anti-Terrorism Measures

Australians who hold dual nationality and flout antiterrorism laws will have their citizenship suspended or revoked, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Monday during an address on national security.
Even those born in Australia could have citizenship privileges taken away if they are involved in terrorism, reports the BBC.
“These [measures] could include restricting the ability to leave or return to Australia, and access to consular services overseas, as well as access to welfare payments,” Abbott said at the federal police headquarters in the capital, Canberra.
The 57-year-old Premier stressed that the new legislation would also target preachers who incite religious or racial hatred.
“By any measure, the threat to Australia is worsening,” he added, calling the spread of Islamic extremism over Syria and Iraq a “new dark age.”
Abbott said that many of his compatriots were becoming radicalized and lured into the “death cult” of terrorist groups. About 90 Australian nationals are believed to have traveled abroad to fight with the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS).
During his speech, Abbott also announced the appointment of a new counterterrorism chief and seven new financial analysts to crack down on terrorist financing.
The move comes in the wake of the Sydney siege, during which a lone gunman, Man Haron Monis, held 18 people hostage at a café in the city center. Three people including Monis, who had pledged fealty to ISIS, died at the scene.

Jack Straw and Malcolm Rifkind respond to 'cash for access' allegations: Politics Live blog

Rolling coverage of all the day’s political developments as they happen, including Sir Malcolm Rifkind and Jack Straw responding to ‘cash for access’ allegations and David Cameron’s speech on protecting pensioner benefits
Q: But you also chair the intelligence and security committee.
Rifkind says he was invited to serve on an advisory board. He would be advising not just on UK matters, but European and global matters. The letter sent to him did not mention his role as an MP. Many MPs serve on boards like this.
John Humphrys is interviewing Sir Malcolm Rifkind.
Today starts the interview by playing a clip of the undercover interview with Rifkind. He said they would be surprised by how much free time he had. He also said he did not receive a salary.
And this is what Jack Straw has said about the allegations.
According to the Press Association, he said in a statement that he made clear from the outset that any discussions he entered into related to what he might do once he left the Commons and not while he was a serving MP. He also said that despite his requests, Dispatches and the Telegraph had not supplied him with a transcript of his conversations with the undercover reporters so he could not identify the context of any of his remarks.
I now face the horrible situation in which what I said is being used to suggest wrongdoing when there was none. But I’ve spent long enough in politics to know how some of the remarks I made in what I had thought was a private conversation will now be used.
In view of this, and in order to clear my name, I have written to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards to make a self-referral to her. I have also written to Rosie Winterton, opposition chief whip, to say that pending consideration of my referral by the Commissioner, I shall voluntarily withdraw from the parliamentary Labour Party.
This is what Sir Malcolm Rifkind told Dispatches about the allegations. I’ve taken the quote from the Press Association.
I have never undertaken nor would undertake any lobbying as an MP on behalf of any private organisation for which I was receiving remuneration. You suggest that I showed myself as ‘willing to act as an MP for hire’. That is untrue.
There was no suggestion that I was being approached as an MP ... Their approach to me was because of my previous experience as a minister ... Ambassadors tend to respond not because I am a current MP but because I was foreign secretary.
Two more MPs have been caught in a “cash for access” sting, and they are two of the most senior figures to be ensnared by undercover reporters - Sir Malcolm Rifkind, the Conservative former foreign secretary, and Jack Straw, the Labour former foreign secretary. Both men have referred themselves to the parliamentary commissioner for standards and deny wrong-doing. It is not clear that they have broken any rules, but the evidence about how they were prepared to use their political influence for personal gain is clearly embarrassing.
The Daily Telegraph and Channel 4’s Dispatches broke the story. Here’s the Guardian’s version. And here’s how it starts.
Two former foreign secretaries are facing accusations of being involved in a new “cash for access” scandal by offering to use their political influence in return for payment.
The Telegraph and Dispatches said that Jack Straw and Sir Malcolm Rifkind offered to use their positions as politicians on behalf of a fictitious Chinese company set up by Channel 4’s Dispatches in return for payments of at least £5,000 per day.

Jerusalem’s Mayor and His Bodyguard Prevented a Stabbing Attack

The Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat, and his bodyguard, together thwarted a potentially deadly knife attack Sunday evening, after they caught an 18-year-old Palestinian who allegedly lunged with a knife at a 27-year-old Israeli next to City Hall.
Barkat, who happened to be passing by when the attack took place, said “My bodyguard and I jumped straight out of the car, he drew his weapon and together we caught the terrorist until police arrived, and we took care of the wounded, who, happily, was only lightly wounded.”
The teenager was subsequently arrested by police. A motive for the stabbing has not yet been established, according to Police Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld.

Reuters’ bureau chief found dead in Islamabad – The Express Tribune

Maria Golovnina had been working with Reuters as the news agency's bureau chief for the past year-and-a-half
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghanistan bureau chief for Reuters, Maria Golovnina, was found dead at her residence located in Sector F-8 in Islamabad on Monday, according to the police.
The police said that Golovnina, a Russian reporter, went to office and came back in the afternoon as she was not feeling well. Initial information revealed that she was feeling heavy headed and dropped on the floor after vomiting, the police said.
“We are saddened to announce that Maria Golovnina, Reuters Bureau Chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan, passed away on Monday. She was 34. Maria fell unconscious in the Islamabad bureau. An ambulance arrived quickly and she was rushed to Kulsum International Hospital, but medical teams were unable to save her.
Maria was a superb journalist with a long and varied career at Reuters. A fluent Japanese and Russian speaker, she joined Reuters in Tokyo in 2001 and subsequently worked in postings around the world including London, Singapore, Moscow, Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2013, Maria became Bureau Chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and led her team through an impressive run of exclusives and insights. Her talents, energy and can-do spirit will be sorely missed,” said a statement released by Reuters on Golovnina’s death.
Dr Ayesha Ishani, the spokesperson for Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), said that she was brought dead to the hospital. Before that she was taken to a private hospital where she was pronounced dead. She further said that it was too early to get to the cause of death.
Contrary to the police version, the spokesperson said that Golovnina was found dead from the washroom of her office, adding that the body was recovered after breaking the door. Post-mortem report will reveal the real cause of death, she said.
Golovnina’s husband had initially refused PIMS administration to carry out a post-mortem but then later gave permission for the hospital to carry out one.
Dr Ishani further said her post-mortem is underway and being carried out by medico-legal officers Dr Nasreen Butt and Dr Furukh Kamal.
“The body has been brought to PIMS so that it can be kept it in the mortuary,” she added.
Golovnina had been working with Reuters as the news agency’s bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan for the past year-and-a-half.
According to her colleagues, the Russian journalist fell unconscious and was rushed to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) where she was officially pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid expressed his grief over the sad demise of Golovnina.
