Kerry teaches Rubio the basics about the Middle East
MSNBC At the recent CPAC gathering, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a likely Republican presidential candidate, seemed to stumble on one of the basic facts of the Middle East. “The reason Obama hasn't put in place a military strategy to defeat ISIS is because he ... and more » |
The future of Iraq and Syria was supposed to be the focus of Wednesday’s hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. No surprise there, given the fact that the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria occupies about a third of each nation.
But the subplot — like a shark’s fin endlessly circling Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, Joint Chiefs chairman General Martin Dempsey and Secretary of State John Kerry — was Iran.
Iran came up at the hearing 67 times, nearly as much as Iraq (79) and more than Syria (44).
The hearing carried echoes of similar ones more than a decade ago that portrayed Iraq as a threat worth going to war to stop. “I think they have the same suspicion about us that we have of them,” Dempsey said of his Iranian counterparts.
Republican lawmakers pointedly asked the trio if the Obama Administration was averting its eyes from Iran’s growing presence in Iraq in hopes of greasing the skids for a nuclear deal with Tehran. “I believe that much of our strategy with regards to ISIS is being driven by a desire not to upset Iran so that they don’t walk away from the negotiating table on the deal that you’re working on,” RepublicanSenator Marco Rubio of Florida said.
“Absolutely not in the least,” Kerry countered.
But as the hearing droned on, Iraq was succeeding in pushing ISIS fighters out of Tikrit after a 10-day battle. While Baghdad did it with no American help, it had substantial aid from neighboring Iran.
Dempsey detailed just how extensive Iran’s help was in the battle for Tikrit: 20,000 of the 24,000 troops fighting ISIS in and around the city, or more than 80%, were “Iranian trained and somewhat Iranian equipped” Shi‘ite militia.
Tikrit carries a key lesson: Iraq can beat ISIS without U.S. assistance, so long as it has Iran by its side. “If it’s Iran that is at the tip of the spear here, if they’re the ones sponsoring the victories … they’re going to have influence in Iraq,” Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said. “That’s going to be very, very difficult, very tenuous, very dangerous for the regional peace.”
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs listed six things that concern him about Iran’s growing role in Iraq and the region:
Four of them are regional, two of them are global. The four regional concerns are: surrogates and proxies, some of which are present in Iraq and Syria and Lebanon and other places, and Yemen; weapons trafficking; ballistic missile technologies; and mines that they’ve developed with the intent to be able to close the Straits of Hormuz if certain circumstances would cause them to do that. And then the two global threats, of course, are their nuclear aspirations. Not their nuclear aspirations for a peaceful nuclear program, but for a weapon, which is being dealt with through the negotiations on a diplomatic track. And then cyber is the other global threat they pose.
Dempsey said Iran’s role in the fight for Tikrit is “positive,” but warned of what might happen next. “We are all concerned about what happens after the drums stop beating and [ISIS] is defeated,” he said. “We’re very concerned about that.”
Might they attack the 3,000 American troops currently in Iraq?, the committee chairman, RepublicanSenator Bob Corker of Tennessee asked.
“We have no indications that they intend to turn on us,” Dempsey said.
That’s hardly reassuring, given Iran’s track record in Iraq. After the 2003 U.S. invasion, Pentagon officials say Tehran provided Shi‘ite militias inside Iraq with a sophisticated form of IEDs. These so-called explosively formed penetrators killed hundreds of U.S. troops.

Mexican mayoral candidate reportedly decapitated – body found on dirt road by Jo Tuckman in Mexico City
The abduction and assassination of Aidé Nava continues to highlight the link between politics and drug war violence in the state of Guerrero
The body of a woman running for election as mayor of a small Mexican town has been discovered after she was kidnapped and reportedly decapitated in the same region where 43 student teachers disappeared last year.
Aidé Nava’s body was found on a dirt road in the beleaguered Mexican state of Guerrero on Tuesday night, hours after she was abducted by a group of armed men, Guerrero’s chief prosecutor Miguel Angel Godínez told Milenio TV.

Parliament’s intelligence and security committee calls for new regulations on communications data in wake of Snowden revelations
New laws are needed to deal with security and privacy in the UK following revelations of the activities of Western intelligence agencies by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, parliament’s intelligence and security committee (ISC) says in a report released on Thursday.
It is expected to strongly defend the need for intelligence agencies to collect bulk communications data on citizens – a tactic that was supported by Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, in evidence to the committee – so long as there are clearer rules on purpose, reporting, oversight and the length of retention.

Bodies Of US Soldiers Killed In Ukraine Float Ashore In Floridaby The European Union Times
A curious insert placed into today’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) report for President Putin states that the bodies of a number of US Marines killed during last months Battle of Debaltseve have begun “mysteriously” appearing upon a Gulf of Mexico beach in Florida.
According to this report, the MoD reported last month that the Obama regime had “effectively abandoned” at least 150 US troops embedded with over 5,000 Ukrainian forces in the rebel surrounded town of Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine from which thousands of shell-shocked Ukrainian soldiers managed to escape, and who later described their terrifying retreat from that apocalyptic rail town while being shot at point blank range.
Of the hundreds of bodies found in the aftermath of this horrific battle by rebel forces, this report continues, Russian intelligence sources identified at least 13 of them as being “probable” US Marines based upon “unique body identifiers” [i.e. tattoos], military equipment used, and “electronic database identification knowledge” of US Special Forces personnel.
The bodies of these US Marines were then turned over by the rebel forces to Ukrainian authorities (who claimed them as their own) on 18 February after which, Russian intelligence sources in this report state, these remains were repatriated to the United States.
Important to note about these dead American Marines, this report says, are that they were all “probable” members of the US Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC)operating out of Romania as part of the Black Sea Rotational Force (BSRF) who, since this past summer, have been training Ukrainian forces.
Most “mysteriously”, however, the MoD says in this report, are that once the bodies of these US Marines left Ukraine a few weeks ago nothing was reported on them, until this week that is when at least 7 of these exact same soldiers bodies were reported to be washing up on the shores of Florida, and as we can, in part, read as reported by American media sources:
“Thick fog forced authorities to suspend the air search Wednesday for seven Marines and four Army aircrew, feared dead after their Black Hawk helicopter crashed into waters off the Florida Panhandle.“We’re working closely with all the parties involved to locate our Marines and the Army crew that were onboard,” added Capt. Barry Morris, a spokesman for the U.S. Marines Corps Special Operations Command. “And, really, just our thoughts (and) prayers are with the Marines, the soldiers and the families of those involved in the mishap.”
To disguise the deaths, and death locations, of Special Forces soldiers in order to maintain operational security, this report explains, is a “common practice” (even within the MoD) but the details so far being released in this instance “strongly suggests” that the Obama regime may have deliberately killed an innocent helicopter crew too in order cover-up these particular deaths.
Most appalling about the deaths of these US Marines in Ukraine, this report continues, is the Obama regime continuing the Bush-era practice of not allowing the American people to know the full, and horrific, toll their losing wars are having on their nation.
As just one example, this report explains, the American people are still not aware that the war they lost in Iraq has cost the lives of nearly 74,000 US Soldiers, an amount far exceeding the 58,195 names recorded on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington.
To how the Bush-Obama regimes have been able to fool their own citizens as to the true and horrible extent of their war deaths has been detailed in many reports, including one on the US Department of Veterans Affairs which states:
“The government, under the Bush administration, did something dishonest that resulted in a lie that’s persisted since the war began — and continues to this very day. They decided to report the war deaths in Iraq only if the soldier died with his boots on the ground in a combat situation. What’s the difference, you might ask?The combat in Vietnam was in rural areas, far removed from medical treatment centers. Injured soldiers were treated by a Medic. Most died at the scene of the battle before they could be evacuated. Many died on route or were declared dead at the medical treatment facilities. The situation in Iraq is vastly different.Fighting in Iraq is mainly in urban areas. Soldiers who are injured are quickly evacuated with armored personnel carriers or helicopters. It’s a much more efficient system than what was possible in Vietnam, but for those that are seriously injured it means that death is more likely to happen while they are in transit or at the treatment facility.Under the new reporting system, deaths that happen en route or post evacuation are not counted as combat deaths. This is why the number seems unusually lowThe actual figures have been hidden from the American public just like the returning, flag draped coffins were censored from the press. But the figures are now available and we can only hope that the American people will be outraged when they learn how they have been misled.According to The Department of Veterans Affairs, as of May 2007, reports in the Gulf War Veterans Information System reveal these startling numbers:Total U.S. Military Gulf War Deaths: 73,846* Deaths amongst Deployed: 17,847* Deaths amongst Non-Deployed: 55,999The statistics for non-lethal injuries are likewise staggering:Total “Undiagnosed Illness” (UDX) claims: 14,874Total number of disability claims filed: 1,620,906* Disability Claims amongst Deployed: 407,911* Disability Claims amongst Non-Deployed: 1,212,995Percentage of combat troops that filed Disability Claims 36%
As Norway begins flooding their border with troops today to counter Russia’s planned “Shock of March” battle plan, this report concludes, what remains to be known is how the Obama regime will be able to conceal the thousands of more deaths of their soldiers from their citizens as their plans to take over the entire world crumbles into nuclear dust all around them.

Hazel Blears jollily declares that, while the agencies collected rather a lot of data, no laws were broken and everything is basically fine
This was not the way Sir Malcolm Rifkind had it planned. The intelligence and security committee had always been his fiefdom and the report on privacy and security was meant to be his baby.
As the grisest of Westminster éminences grises, it should have been him that got to pronounce on the health of the intelligence services. However, Rifkind’s own recent privacy issues had made that tricky; empty-chairing himself might have set an awkward precedent that the prime minister would not have appreciated, so he settled for looking grumpy and morose while Hazel Blears ran the show.
The committee had examined all the evidence at great length and decided everything was basically tickety-boo

Britain’s defence strategy should be based on the threats the nation faces, not perverse political totems
It isn’t just military planners who seem happier refighting the last war. Politicians are too. David Cameron chooses to stay tactically quiet about defence because he was humbled by losing the Syria vote in 2013. But Ed Miliband, who won that vote, is just as cautious. Labour remains haunted by its own defence ghosts, many dating back to the unilateralist 1980s.
Few would go so far as to claim that defence is the paramount question facing Britain in the coming general election. Yet few would deny it is now genuinely one of the most important. This will be the first election since the 1980s in which defence may – and should – occupy a significant part of the political debate. But it is also in danger of being sidetracked.

Kremlin Says Putin Healthy, Dismisses Illness Rumorsby webdesk@voanews.com (Reuters)
Russian President Vladimir Putin is in good health, the Kremlin said on Thursday, dismissing rumors that the leader was suffering from an illness after a foreign trip was canceled. A Kazakh governmental source said Putin's trip to Astana scheduled for this week was canceled because Putin had fallen ill, stirring speculation on social media that something had happened to the 62-year-old leader. Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, asked by Reuters if the president was in good health, replied “yes.” “He has meetings all the time,” Peskov said by telephone. “He has meetings today, tomorrow. I don't know which ones we will make public.” The daily RBK said Putin had not been seen live on television since a March 5 meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Photographs on the Kremlin website showed him at meetings dated March 10 and March 11. Markets shrug off reports Markets had shrugged off the rumors about Putin, and the rouble was trading slightly stronger on Thursday. The last time Putin's health was in the spotlight was in 2012. Three sources told Reuters that Putin, who was seen limping in public, was suffering from back pain. The Kremlin denied that Putin had back problems. Putin was not the only subject of rumor. The editor in chief of Nezavisimaya newspaper tweeted late on Wednesday that he had been told that Putin's ally Igor Sechin, the chief executive officer of Rosneft Russia's largest oil producer, would be fired on Thursday. A Rosneft spokesman described the remark as wrong. Russian politics, through the Soviet era and beyond, has traditionally been fertile ground for rumor because of the secrecy surrounding leaders. Peskov, asked by Ekho Moskvy if the president's handshake remained firm, answered: ”handbreakingly so.” “Some people are dreaming of Sechin's resignation, some of the resignation of the government and some haven't seen president Putin for several days on television,” Peskov told Tass news agency.
