After months of fighting in eastern Ukraine, the presence of the Ukrainian military and the shelling of civilian neighborhoods seem to be pushing more men to join the rebellion.  New recruits for Ukraine’s rebel army, part of a battalion of Don Cossacks, are on their way out of Donetsk to a piece of wasteland for weapons training. Their targets are the faces of western-leaning Ukrainian politicians, including Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko. It's been months since the Ukrainian government launched a so-called "anti-terrorism operation" to retake the east of the country.  But these Cossacks have a long tradition of defending the Russian empire. To them, the offensive felt like an armed invasion by a new government they were already suspicious of. Sasha, their commander, was an economist and businessman before the war. He travelled to Kyiv and had friends there.  But now, he said, no one there understands why he’s fighting. “They think that we are terrorists, and pro-Russian citizens. But I do not think like this. We were born as Russians in our blood, and we are living on our land. As a rule, we have no contact with 90% of our old friends on western Ukraine and there is a massive lack of comprehension between us and them,” said Sasha. The use of artillery and rockets in built up areas by both sides has led to many civilian deaths and huge damage to property. And instead of discouraging the rebellion, these men say it has obligated them to join up.  One, who goes by “Spiker,” worked as a miner until his village was largely destroyed by shelling. “A lot of my neighbors were killed, a lot of my friends who I worked with before were killed.  All the houses and church on my street were ruined. The children's playground and school were ruined,” he said. The men say they are most concerned about the volunteers coming east to fight for the government, some of whom are part of far right political movements. It’s here that one can see the lingering effect World War II has had on the region. “Many women and men were fighting on the side of the USSR and the coalition. The western part of Ukraine was under Hitler's coalition and that is the reason why today we still have a lot of far-right nationalist organizations,” said Sasha. Weapons training ends with grenade launchers and a demonstration of explosives using old equipment from the coal mines. Despite the cease-fire, these men say they expect the fighting will start again soon. In this war, one side thinks they are fighting terrorists, the other thinks they are fighting the Nazis. And the longer the fighting continues, the more polarized this region will become.

Two high-ranking U.S. Secret Service agents are under investigation due allegations they drove a government car into a security barricade at the White House after drinking at a late-night party. In a story first reported Wednesday by The Washington Post, local police and Secret Service officers were investigating the discovery of a suspicious package near the White House when the agents drove through an entrance that had been closed off.  Officers on the scene wanted to arrest the agents and put them through sobriety tests, according to the Post, but they were ordered by a supervisor to release the pair. One of the agents has been identified as the second-ranking commander on President Barack Obama's personal security detail. The investigation is being conducted by the Homeland Security department, which oversees the Secret Service. "If misconduct is identified, appropriate action will be taken based on established rules and regulations," said Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary. "The fact that this event involved senior-level agents is not only embarrassing but exhibits a clear lack of judgment in a potentially dangerous situation," said a joint statement issued by Representative Jason Chaffetz, the chairman of the Republican-led House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Representative Elijah Cummings, the committee's top Democrat. This is the latest embarrassing incident for the Secret Service, which is tasked to protect the president and vice president and their families.  The most recent incident occurred last September, when a man armed with a knife jumped the White House fence and ran all the way into the mansion before he was stopped. The incident led to the resignation of then-Director Julia Pierson. An independent review conducted after the September incident described an agency that was too "insular" and starved for leadership.  The report called for an outsider to lead the Secret Service, but Obama named Joseph Clancy, a veteran Secret Service agent, to the post. Clancy, who headed the president's detail early in his administration before retiring from the agency, was named interim director after Pierson's resignation.

“There are U.S. cells today of terrorists that we’re all aware of. I chair the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism, and so I’m conscious of the concerns, and I just think we would be wise as a country to prepare ourselves better for what could happen,” Rep. Pittenger told Breitbart News when asked to explain his motive for releasing the Terrorism Preparedness Manual.

He noted that Americans are the targets of a number of terrorist groups including the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) and al-Qaeda.

“There are folks in ISIS, being trained by ISIS overseas right now who have American passports and European passports and they have easy access to the U.S.,” explained the North Carolina lawmaker.

Rep. Pittenger assembled the preparedness manual with the help of retired military officers, nationally-recognized experts on counterterrorism and cyber-security, FEMA, the American Red Cross, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Titled “Preparing Your Home, Family, and Business for Terrorist Attacks,” the 24-page manual can be downloaded for free at www.PrepareNow.com.

“I think it’s important we’re all conscious of the threats against our homeland and of the attacks that have already occurred on our homeland,” the Congressman told Breitbart News. “The purpose of the manual is to give families and small businesses the how-tos—what they can do to prepare in the event of a chemical, biological, nuclear, cyber, and other kinds of kinetic attacks.”

“You don’t want to at all be involved in scaring people, but I think it would be very imprudent and unwise to think—well it’s not going to happen here,” he added. “That would not be a reasonable approach. Clear minds would say, ‘yes it could happen here.’”

Rep. Pittenger stressed that the manual is available to any member of Congress to distribute in their district.

“I have no entitlement to it,” he proclaimed. “This is about protecting America and saving lives.”

In January, Diane Feinstein (D-CA), the ranking-member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, warned that there are terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S.

“Americans are less likely to panic during a crisis if they have prepared and made plans ahead of time,” said Rep. Pittenger in a statement released along with the manual.

“This preparedness manual offers specific, common sense suggestions for preparing your home, family, and small business to mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack and respond with appropriate steps and antidotes,” added Pittenger. “Being prepared will help blunt the impact of any terrorist attack, and make it easier for first-responders to focus on those with the most critical needs.”

The manual suggests that Americans keep an emergency supply kit handy that includes water, nonperishable foods, clothing, cash, radio, first aid kit, signal flares, blankets, and copies of important documents such as ID and proof of residence, among other items.

“Make a Family Emergency Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency,” states the manual. “Plan places where your family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate neighborhood. Ensure family members have access to plans and phone numbers, and rehearse the plans if possible.”

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticized an open letter sent by 47 U.S. Republican Senators to Tehran about the ongoing negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, saying the move showed "disintegration" in U.S. politics. The letter warns that the next U.S. president could revoke any deal Iran may reach with a group of six world powers.  Those talks are due to resume Sunday as the two sides seek an interim agreement by the end of the month. Iranian state media quoted the supreme leader as saying he is concerned about what he called "backstabbing" in the negotiation process.  He said that the international group, particularly the U.S., takes a harsher tone when the two sides get close to the end of the talks. Iran has insisted it is not trying to build nuclear weapons.  The United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany are seeking assurances that the Iranian nuclear program is peaceful in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday the letter left him in "utter disbelief," and that Congress does not have the right to modify an agreement reached between the leaders of countries. He called the Republican letter irresponsible. "No one is questioning anybody's right to dissent. But to write to the leaders in the middle of a negotiation.....and suggest they're going to give a constitutional lesson, which by the way is incorrect, is quite stunning," Kerry said. Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the letter written by Arkansas freshman Senator Tom Cotton undermines U.S. foreign policy and ignores more than 200 years of history.

            Staunton, March 12 – It is an article of faith for Vladimir Putin and many Russians as well that, despite what he and they are sometimes willing to concede were Joseph Stalin’s excesses, the Soviet dictator was absolutely necessary in building up a strong Soviet Union that was then capable of defeating Nazi Germany.

            But a new book just published in Moscow challenges that assumption, and thus undermines both the Kremlin’s historical narrative and the assumption increasingly widespread in Russia and elsewhere that that country cannot be run by anyone but a dictator, an assumption that leads those who think that to excuse Putin’s “excesses,” viewing them as necessary as well.

            Oleg V. Khlevniuk , a senior researcher at the State Archive of the Russian Federation in Moscow, has written many scholarly books  about Stalin’s times, but his new one, “Stalin. The Life of One Leader” (in Russian; Moscow: Corpus, 450 pages), has been published by a commercial house and is intended for the widest possible audience.

            In an interview with Petr Fedorov of “Vozdukh,” Khlevnyuk explains that he wrote the book to show that “Stalin was not necessary,” that there were alternatives, and that many of them would have been far preferable for Russia if not for its ruling elites who always benefit from the notion that things could not be otherwise (vozduh.afisha.ru/books/byl-li-stalin-neobhodim-ya-dokazyvayu-chto-net/).

            Elites use this notion to convince Russians that whatever is and whatever they do must be accepted because “it is always possible to say: ‘Well, you know, in our country, nothing else could have occurred.” As a historian, Khlevniuk says, he finds this “conception meaningless,” especially since Stalin like other leaders sometimes acted one way and sometimes ago.

            The core argument of his book, the historian says, is that Stalin was not necessary and that he did far more harm than a different leader with different policies would have done.  His terror, for example, was “absolutely senseless even from the point of view of the system.” Indeed, “it weakened it in the end.”

            The task of any biographer, Khlevniuk says, is to try to reconstruct the times in which its subject lived and to get inside the logic of his actions. “Why did he do what he did? What were his calculations?” In short, what role did his personality and subjective approach play in the course of events.

            Even though some Russians now deny it, Stalin was directly implicated in the killings of the Great Terror. He kept all the orders to kill that he signed. But, and this is relevant now, he killed by giving orders “from his office,” as one of Khlevniuk’s colleagues has said. He did not pull the trigger. That disconnect allows some to lie to themselves and others about his role.

            The historian points to three sources of the extraordinary popularity of Stalin at the present time. The first is the ignorance of the population about the history of the country and the propensity of many to think that some past time was better than the present. The second is that Stalin’s times are not ancient history: there are still many people who grew up then and choose to remember their childhoods in rosy colors.

            And third, Khlevniuk argues, the image of Stalin among Russians today as a positive figure or at least as one for whom there was no substitute has been actively promoted by the current Russian government for its own purposes. Pro-Stalin books have thus “undeservedly received enormous support” and attracted a large audience.

            The archival historian says that he very much hopes that his book will change the minds of the vast majority of people who are neither passionate supporters of Stalin or passionate opponents but rather view him the way the current Kremlin leaders want them to because that is the path of least resistance.

            From his perspective, Khlevniuk says, what is especially horrifying is that many of the pro-Stalin books and articles are largely or completely falsified and that their conclusions are nonetheless finding their way into academic studies and thus gaining a respectability they do not deserve. “This is a catastrophe,” he argues.

            Sometimes people think that Stalinism in Russia can be dispelled as Nazism was in Germany, but that is impossible, Khlevniuk says. Hitler lost a war, but the Stalinist regime “ended as a result of its own contradictions,” and it did so “immediately after the death of Stalin.”

            Indeed, “as soon as Stalin died, within a week, his regime was no more” because “his own supporters destroyed it because they understood that it was impossible to life that way any longer. The system simply wasn’t capable of working,” yet another lesson to all who say that everything is inevitable and that personalities don’t matter.

            Staunton, March 12 – When Vladimir Putin decided a year ago to annex Crimea, he and his supporters expected that this would be “the first event in a chain of unending victories which would show the world the dangerousness of ‘ignoring’ Moscow’s appetites and instead convert the Russian Federation into the Soviet Union of the 21stcentury, Vitaly Portnikov says.

            But things have not worked out that way, the Kyiv commentator says. Moscow did not get the new Soviet Union it hoped for; instead, it set in train a series of developments “along the path of state suicide,” a path that, despite its dangers Putin, seems incapable of recognizing or getting off (ru.krymr.com/content/article/26893353.html).

            Putin did not understand that all the non-Russian countries or even the Russian speakers in them were uninterested in his project. He did not understand what the reaction of the international community to his invasion. He didn’t understand what losses economic and military he would face. And he didn’t understand that there is no way back from him crimes.

            The readiness of some Russians to welcome the largely bloodless annexation of Crimea was like some teenager in a narcotic stupor powered by drugs that he had bought with money he had stolen from his mother’s handbag, Portnikov says. But that youth doesn’t want to suffer or even pay up – and now a year later, he sees that he might have to. He did not understand.

            According to Portnikov, Russia is “celebrating” the first anniversary of the Anschluss so broadly – not just on one day but for a whole week – is because Russians “are not certain” whether they will be in a position to mark a second anniversary next year. 

            It is possible, he continues, that even a year from now, Crimea may remain under Russian occupation. “But the economic situation of Russia, its chances for survival, and the ability of its population to be gladdened by anything besides the solution of their own everyday problems” -- which are likely to be “more important topics for discussion than any political events.”

            In March 2016, “somewhere in Moscow, Tula or Yaroslavl,” Russians will view Crimea the way they have viewed Chechnya, as a place populated by people who only make demands for their tax money and who are anything but pleased by their anything but asked for “’liberators.’”

            Putin’s promotion of himself as “the unifier of Russian lands” will then look even worse than it does today to Russians and everyone else, given “the bloody war in Ukraine’s east, the collapse of the Russian economy, and the final marginalization even without this of its still uncompleted state building.”

            Consequently, Portnikov concludes, for Russians this March and perhaps next, “this is not a week of joy; this is a week of despair.”

Democrats and the mainstream media have used the words "traitor" and "treason" to describe a letter to Iranian leaders, drafted by freshman Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and signed by 47 Republican Senators, that warns any nuclear deal President Barack Obama signs may be voided by a future administration or Congress if it is not ratified by the Senate. “There are U.S. cells today of terrorists that we’re all aware of. I chair the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism, and so I’m conscious of the concerns, and I just think we would be wise as a country to prepare ourselves better for what could happen,” Rep. Pittenger told Breitbart News when asked to explain his motive for releasing the Terrorism Preparedness Manual.

He noted that Americans are the targets of a number of terrorist groups including the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) and al-Qaeda.

“There are folks in ISIS, being trained by ISIS overseas right now who have American passports and European passports and they have easy access to the U.S.,” explained the North Carolina lawmaker.

Rep. Pittenger assembled the preparedness manual with the help of retired military officers, nationally-recognized experts on counterterrorism and cyber-security, FEMA, the American Red Cross, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Titled “Preparing Your Home, Family, and Business for Terrorist Attacks,” the 24-page manual can be downloaded for free at www.PrepareNow.com.

“I think it’s important we’re all conscious of the threats against our homeland and of the attacks that have already occurred on our homeland,” the Congressman told Breitbart News. “The purpose of the manual is to give families and small businesses the how-tos—what they can do to prepare in the event of a chemical, biological, nuclear, cyber, and other kinds of kinetic attacks.”

“You don’t want to at all be involved in scaring people, but I think it would be very imprudent and unwise to think—well it’s not going to happen here,” he added. “That would not be a reasonable approach. Clear minds would say, ‘yes it could happen here.’”

Rep. Pittenger stressed that the manual is available to any member of Congress to distribute in their district.

“I have no entitlement to it,” he proclaimed. “This is about protecting America and saving lives.”

In January, Diane Feinstein (D-CA), the ranking-member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, warned that there are terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S.

“Americans are less likely to panic during a crisis if they have prepared and made plans ahead of time,” said Rep. Pittenger in a statement released along with the manual.

“This preparedness manual offers specific, common sense suggestions for preparing your home, family, and small business to mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack and respond with appropriate steps and antidotes,” added Pittenger. “Being prepared will help blunt the impact of any terrorist attack, and make it easier for first-responders to focus on those with the most critical needs.”

The manual suggests that Americans keep an emergency supply kit handy that includes water, nonperishable foods, clothing, cash, radio, first aid kit, signal flares, blankets, and copies of important documents such as ID and proof of residence, among other items.

“Make a Family Emergency Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency,” states the manual. “Plan places where your family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate neighborhood. Ensure family members have access to plans and phone numbers, and rehearse the plans if possible.”

Early Thursday morning, multiple outlets and sources on social media reported two police officers were shot outside the Ferguson, MO police headquarters around midnight local time.

According to USA Today, the shooting has been confirmed by acting Ferguson police chief Lt. Col. Al Eickhoff.

The incident comes on the heels of the announcement of the former Ferguson police chief, Thomas Jackson stepping down.

Российский вор в законе Вячеслав Леонтьев, он же Вадик Белый, — настоящая знаменитость криминального мира. И не только потому, что был другом Хасана и Япончика, хоть и предпочитал всегда оставаться в тени. «Авторитета» знают Интерпол и даже сам Барак Обама. Американский президент включил Белого в черный список представителей ОПГ, угрожающих национальной безопасности.

А на днях на самого Леонтьева в Дубае было совершено покушение. Это тут же связали с дележкой империи Хасана, однако реальность оказалось куда более неожиданной. Да и в распоряжение спецкора «МК» попали фото, где якобы ненавидящие друг друга авторитеты из противоборствующих кланов сидят в обнимку.

Зная о нелюбви их брата к журналистам (хотя Япончик, будучи в американской тюрьме, давал интервью), я представилась писательницей, которая готовит книгу о современном криминальном мире. Попросила Белого рассказать о последних сходках, об убийцах Хасана, войне кланов и о том, чем живет и дышит сегодня воровской мир. И самый осведомленный на сегодняшний день представитель воровского олимпа Вячеслав Леонтьев поведал много интересного.

Талант в Белом разглядел еще Япончик (Вячеслав Иваньков).

Высокий блондин, бриллианты, кокаин

Не удивлюсь, если историю Белого когда-нибудь экранизируют. Очень уж он интересный персонаж — мало того что яркий блондин, так еще и любит носить белоснежную одежду и ездить на белых броневиках, артистичный, обаятельный, Есенина и Лермонтова цитирует… Но главное, конечно, не это, а то, что Америка считает его самым влиятельным российским вором в законе. Не так давно президент Барак Обама подписал распоряжение №13581 о начале нового этапа борьбы с международной организованной преступностью. Речь шла о введении санкций против четырех транснациональных преступных группировок: итальянской каморры, японской якудзы, мексиканской «Лос-Сетас» и российского «Братского круга» (кстати, это так американцы перевели слово «братва»). В списке «братвы» 7 человек, возглавляет его Вадик Белый.

Интересен он тем, что дружил с ныне почившими Япончиком и Дедом Хасаном, а сейчас он близкий друг «законника» Шакро Молодого (того самого, которого пророчат в наследники Хасана) и Ровшана Ленкоранского (а этого некоторые считают заказчиком убийства Деда Хасана). По раскладам спецслужб, Шакро и Ровшан вроде как из противоборствующих кланов, и тогда, выходит, Белый — и с теми, и с другими?..

Живет Вадик Белый сегодня в Дубае. Принимает тут россиян, которые приезжают специально за помощью и советами. Бизнесмены, чиновники тянутся к нему в надежде, что поможет «дела порешать». Помимо этого занимается яхтами и еще бог знает чем.

Нелишним будет вкратце рассказать, как оказался Белый на ПМЖ в Арабских Эмиратах. В ноябре 2003 года его задержали возле военного госпиталя Бурденко, где он лечился после ранения, полученного в бандитской разборке. В карманах нашли 5 пакетиков с кокаином и 33 бриллианта. В отделении полиции Белый проспорил бутылку коньяка одному из оперов. И предметом спора были как раз мы, журналисты. Белый утверждал, что СМИ о нем никогда ничего не писали, а опер нашел-таки в Интернете статьи с упоминанием его имени. Но коньяк Вадик отдать (по крайней мере лично) не смог. Так что за ним должок (а после нашей статьи о нем — одной бутылкой уже не отделаешься). Если серьезно, то «законника» московские полицейские передали в руки нижегородским, поскольку те расследовали уголовное дело о той самой перестрелке, в которой Белого зацепило.

Так вот, когда стражи порядка из родного города везли Вадика домой, он разыграл сердечный приступ и скрылся. Потом Белого еще пару раз задерживали, но почему-то отпускали, не предъявив обвинений... Вот он, как сам выражается, и поехал «пересиживать милицейский беспредел» в Дубай (покинул родину, кстати, без всяких сложностей на границе).

Уже после миграции Белого полицейские во время обыска нашли у него дома целый арсенал боеприпасов и арестовали заочно. Вадика объявили в федеральный и международный розыск, затем его поисками занялся Интерпол (статья 191 УК — «незаконный оборот драгоценных камней» — считалась тяжкой). Белого арестовывали уже в Дубае в 2007 и 2010 годах по запросу России, но документы о вменяемом тяжком грехе Леонтьева так и не прислали, так что его отпустили...

КОММЕНТАРИИ адвоката Вадима ЛЯЛИНА:

— Владислав Леонтьев сегодня уже не в международном розыске и не разыскивается по линии НЦБ Интерпола в связи с отсутствием оснований и прекращением уголовного преследования за камни. В федеральном розыске числится по ст. 228 ч. 1, которая небольшой тяжести и предусматривает наказание в виде лишения свободы максимум до 3 лет. Срок давности уже давно истек.

Война, которой не было?

— Мне надоело читать ежедневный бред, — начинает Вадик Белый. Разговор мы с ним вели по «Скайпу», потому как он в Дубае, я в Москве. (Кстати, по «Скайпу» сейчас даже сходки проводят, но вообще воры предпочитают общаться вживую.) — Надоело постоянно видеть сообщения о том, что погибают Воры (Белый настаивал, чтобы «вор» в его речи прозвучало с большой буквы, в знак его особого отношения. — Прим. авт.), которые и поныне здравствуют, храни их Господь! Такое впечатление, что кто-то хочет запугать обывателей гангстерскими войнами и кровавыми разборками, которые не имели места в реальной жизни. Тому простой пример — вор Ровшан. За последние несколько месяцев его резали, убивали, по сообщениям прессы, минимум раз в неделю.

— То есть вы утверждаете, что Ровшан жив?

— Он здрав и поныне, чего и другим желает, и прежде всего своим врагам. Никто в него не стрелял.

— Верится с трудом — ведь факт его смерти подтверждала полиция. И даже говорили, что ему отомстили за смерть Деда Хасана...

— Кто-то навязывает лживую историю о якобы плохих отношениях Хасана и Ровшана. Интересно, а кому это выгодно? Я думаю, тем, кто действительно убил Хасана. Ровшан был с Хасаном в хороших отношениях. Он вообще очень интеллигентный, воспитанный, глубоко верующий, а значит, осуждающий любое насилие человек. Спросите его соседей-односельчан: каков он, Ровшан? И вы услышите множество историй о том, как он помогает простым людям.

— А сам Ровшан как реагирует на то, что СМИ его называют убийцей Хасана?

— А когда про нас что-то хорошее писали? Нет, мы привыкли. Мы кому-то должны что-то доказывать?! Нет. Мы должны только своим коллегам по цеху. Все остальное нас не интересует.

(Начинает цитировать стихи Есенина.)

«Мне осталась одна забава —

Пальцы в рот да веселый свист,

Прокатилась дурная слава,

Что похабник я и скандалист.

Золотые далекие дали,

Все съедает житейская мреть.

И похабничал я, и скандалил

Для того, чтобы ярче гореть...»

— Объясните мне, обычному человек, почему в принципе враждуют воровские кланы? Что им делить?

— Комментировать этот бред очень сложно, потому как у воров нет кланов.

— Как это нет? А знаменитая коза ностра, например, — выдумка?

— Вот-вот. Возможно, писаки начитались книжек про итальянскую мафию и перепутали что-то? Воровская семья — вот как мы правильно называемся. А все воры — братья. И на сходке решается, может ли тот или иной человек стать братом и достоин ли воровского имени. Писали, что якобы Хасан лишил Ровшана статуса вора. Это просто смешно. Вор рождается и умирает на сходке. И нет ни у одного вора права коснуться чести другого вора, кроме как сделав это на сходке. Вор может сказать многое, но каждое слово он должен обосновать. Хасан ничем не отличался от других воров, и жил он по тем же понятиям, что и они. Про всякие ранги в криминальном мире — это все ерунда полная. Это вам не армия.

Все говорят и пишут еще и о Шакро как о некоем конкуренте Хасана. Да они всю жизнь дружили и относились друг к другу с большим уважением. А конфликты и споры существуют для того, чтобы найти истину. И мирным путем. Многие воры дружат друг с другом десятилетиями, и как вы думаете: они забудут все, что они прошли вместе?

— Мой коллега был на поминках Хасана, и там говорилось о войне...

— Вот вам охота опять задавать этот бредовый вопрос. Как вы думаете, если люди хотят сделать что-то наказуемое нашим Уголовным кодексом, будут ли они обсуждать это в присутствии какого-то репортера?

— Ну а кто же тогда стоит за смертью Хасана?

— Убийц нужно искать среди тех, кто хочет, чтобы вернулись кровавые 90-е. Но пусть даже не мечтают: воры этого не допустят. Те, кто говорит о войнах, хотят запугать рядовых граждан и поиметь свои дивиденды, в том числе возможность бесконтрольного расхода денег налогоплательщиков. Им надо как-то оправдывать свой хлеб. Они делают вид, что предотвращают войну. Только какую — непонятно. Кто с кем воюет? Вы знаете, под весь этот шумок каждый называет убийцей Хасана своего врага, желая тем самым сделать ему пакость.

— А зачем тогда собирали сходку в Дубае с участием трех сотен авторитетов?

— Не было никакой сходки. Написали, что некая турфирма получила заказ сделать ворам загранпаспорта. Ну можно было чего-нибудь поразумнее придумать? Да у любого вора он есть. Все современные люди, отдыхают в Европе, Таиланде… Вот напишут в СМИ, а потом местные стукачи в Эмиратах бегут в полицию с криком — знаете, что сейчас начнется?! Им дают за это деньги, а люди, живущие в Дубае, страдают. Потому что их арестовывают, их выселяют отсюда.

КСТАТИ

Никакой сходки, возможно, действительно не было. За нее могли принять празднование дня рождения вора Вагона (который недавно писал открытые письма Бастрыкину с жалобами на дубайскую жизнь, гонения и милицейский произвол).

— Вот интересно — хотели бы остановить слухи, которые муссируются в прессе?

— А как? Вот произошло недавно очень интересное событие: Стас Михайлов, Валерий Меладзе и Григорий Лепс попросили защитить государство от назойливых папарацци. Лепс даже сказал, что иначе ему придется самому наказывать журналистов и идти в тюрьму. И я спрашиваю: так что нам, тоже журналистов бить?

— СМИ не выдумывают, а получают информацию от правоохранительных органов.

— Откуда правоохранительные органы знают, что творится в совершенно далеком мире, к которому не имеют никакого отношения?

— Они же ведут уголовные дела, задерживают таких, как вы!

— Стоп-стоп-стоп. У них же одна схема: подбросить в карман наркотик — и в тюрьму по 228-й статье УК. Такое впечатление, что все воры — наркоманы. А если посмотреть внимательно, окажется, что цветущие, крепкие молодые ребята, которые занимаются спортом и ведут здоровый образ жизни.

— Раз уж заговорили о наркотиках: Ровшан, по некоторым данным, контролировал наркотрафик из Афганистана в Россию. И как раз против этого бизнеса резко выступал Хасан, на почве чего они ссорились.

— Это вранье. У воров строгий кодекс чести, и он не позволяет заниматься наркотиками. Какая необходимость была Ровшану смешивать свое имя с грязью?

— Вот вы про кодекс чести. Но разве вору не запрещается иметь семью, бизнес? А у того же Хасана мы насчитали десятки фирм (правда, оформленных на родственников).

— Неблагодарное дело обсуждать покойных. Что там у Хасана было — он уже ответ перед Господом держит. Жестких требований про семью никогда не было. Как это претит каким-либо устоям о чести и достоинстве? Ну есть у вора семья — и что?! Валентин Пикуль очень хорошо описал это: ни один человек не может запретить вору иметь семью, но, зная тяготы и лишения воровской жизни, мы не можем их взвалить на плечи тех, кто рядом с нами. И не пожалеем ли мы потом об этом? Легче воровской крест нести одному.

— А как вы относитесь к мнению, что подобные вам люди — анахронизм, и каста воров обречена на вымирание?

— Ты православная?

— Да.

— Скажи, кто первый вошел в рай вместе с Иисусом Христом? Вор. Мне нравится одно стихотворение, там есть такие слова: «А вора Бог с собой забрал, одним этапом в рай поднялись». Вспомним древних греков — у них было отдельное божество, покровительствующее ворам. Как ты думаешь, если 5 тысяч лет воры существовали, то почему они должны исчезнуть сейчас?..

— Если уж о религии говорить, то вы же девятую заповедь «не укради» нарушаете.

— «А девятая — не прихоть, а профессия моя». Когда Господа к кресту прибивали, один из гвоздей украли. Вот и думай. Смотри на все проще: если бы мы делали небогоугодное дело, терпел бы нас Бог на белом свете?

— Ну, Бог много кого терпит, в том числе убийц, маньяков...

— Не согрешишь — не покаешься.

— Раньше вы крышевали бизнес, теперь за вас это делают другие. И вы уже ничем не управляете.

— Ничем мы никогда и не управляли. Кто-то хочет быть похожими на нас — ради Бога. Но мы никому не навязываем свое.

— И все-таки вы изначально вне закона, вне общества.

— Почему вы так думаете? Если бы у нас было правовое государство, то люди шли бы в милицию, а не к ворам. Если кто-то хочет кого-то закрыть в тюрьму, то идут к продажным полицейским. А если ищут справедливости, то к нам. И получается, что никуда не денешься: «Бог создал вора, а черт — прокурора».

Вот Есенин писал о ворах. Мы были ему намного ближе, чем власть, его убившая. Воровское братство существовало в Москве с незапамятных времен. U.S. Treasury Sanctions Duma Member Delimkhanov

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has placed a member of the Russian Duma on its sanctions list of individuals involved in organized international crime.

The Treasury Department said on July 2 that Duma member Adam Sultanovich Delimkhanov acts "for or on behalf of" Gafur Rakhimov, a key member of the Brothers’ Circle, a large multi-ethnic Eurasian criminal network.

The Treasury's action freezes any assets Delimkhanov may have within the jurisdiction of the United States and prohibits any transactions with him by U.S. persons.

The statement gave no further details of Delimkhanov's activities.

But it said the Brothers’ Circle is made up of leaders and senior members of several Eurasian criminal groups largely based in countries of the former Soviet Union and also operating in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Russia and Chechnya: The Caucasian connection

THE people who killed Boris Nemtsov, a liberal politician, on February 27th, did not expect to be arrested. That was clear from their impudence.

Having shot Mr Nemtsov in the back, in the heart of Moscow, they did not cross the river to leave the city centre. Instead, they circled the Kremlin, passed the Duma, Russia’s parliament, and turned into a well-lit, half-pedestrian street. They did not even burn their getaway car.

Such brazen behaviour raised suspicions that the killers might be Chechen hitmen, of the sort who work for Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya, who has hitherto been a big friend (and fan) of Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin. Now some are wondering whether the seemingly solid pact between Mr Putin and Mr Kadyrov may have become too costly for the Russian leader.

An ex-warlord, Mr Kadyrov was plucked out of obscurity by the Russian leader and installed as president of the once mutinous Caucasian republic, succeeding his father who had been assassinated. Mr Putin has let Mr Kadyrov ignore Russian laws and settle scores freely. In the past decade, Chechnya has virtually became a separate Islamic state under Mr Kadyrov’s rule. He has his own 20,000-strong army, his own (informal) tax system and his own religious laws.

As Russia’s strongest regional leader, Mr Kadyrov extends his influence right across the country. His security men have special status in Moscow. After officers of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the alma mater of Mr Putin, arrested a group of Mr Kadyrov’s men over kidnappings, torture and extortion in the capital, they walked free. Several nasty murders have highlighted Chechen impunity. When Anna Politkovskaya, a brave reporter, was killed in 2006, the main suspect went to Chechnya and lived near Mr Kadyrov. He was jailed for life after a probe by the dead woman’s colleagues, but those who ordered the killing were not named. After the death of Natalia Estemirova, a human-rights activist slain in Chechnya after threats from Mr Kadyrov, nobody was held responsible.

One of Mr Kadyrov’s old rivals, Ruslan Yamadaev, was shot dead in rush-hour traffic, next to a public building in Moscow. His brother, who had led a pro-Russian unit against Georgia, was assassinated in Dubai, where police issued a warrant for Adam Delimkhanov, Mr Kadyrov’s right-hand man and relative. In 2009 Mr Kadyrov’s ex-security guard, who had spoken of torture and executions carried out by his old bosses, was killed in Vienna.

Few were surprised on March 8th when Alexander Bortnikov, head of the FSB, announced that five men had been detained over the murder of Mr Nemtsov, including Zaur Dadaev, an ex-commander of the “North battalion”, made up of Mr Kadyrov’s irregular forces.

Indeed, the only person who seemed shocked was Mr Kadyrov, who has made odd statements since the Nemtsov killing. On the day of the murder, he wrote on his Instagram account that Western spooks were to blame. After Mr Dadaev’s arrest, he spoke out again: “I knew Zaur as a true patriot…he is devoted to Russia and was always ready to give his life for it. Even if the court confirms his guilt…he could not have taken a step against Russia.” (Soon after, Mr Dadaev retracted his confession.)

In his Instagram statement, Mr Kadyrov hinted that Mr Nemtsov might have been killed for condemning the terrorist attack on the French weekly Charlie Hebdo. The Chechen leader’s own reaction was different: he led a vast rally in his capital Grozny against Charlie, not the killing of its staff.

The Russian security services claim that Mr Dadaev and his men planned and carried out Mr Nemtsov’s murder. That raises many questions. Few observers believe that anything involving Chechen fighters occurs without Mr Kadyrov’s and Mr Delimkhanov’s knowledge. But the same probably goes for the FSB, whose agents trailed Mr Nemtsov. As ever in Russia there are more theories than facts. Some wonder whether the FSB has exploited the killing to settle scores with Mr Kadyrov.

There is no love lost between senior Russian military and security officers and the Kadyrov camp. Russian officers in Chechnya resent the political authority of Chechens who were once their foes. In 2010 Russian forces accused the North battalion of betraying them in a clash with rebels. While swearing loyalty to Mr Putin, on home soil Mr Kadyrov boasts of having won independence not by fighting Moscow but by milking it.

Mr Kadyrov’s reaction to the arrest of Mr Dadaev suggests a hard struggle between forces previously united around Mr Putin: the FSB and his Chechen friends. As Novaya Gazeta, a liberal paper, wrote: “Two pillars of Kremlin support bashed their heads and are now moving in the opposite directions, forcing the Kremlin to choose which is a true patriot of Russia.”

The stakes are high; Mr Putin is trying to preserve at least the appearance of stability, and this week went ahead with a planned award to Mr Kadyrov. Should the Chechen leader lose Kremlin support, he will be at risk, because he has many blood enemies, say analysts. Mr Putin also needs Mr Kadyrov to keep order in Chechnya.

But the bond is unstable. “The contract between Kadyrov and Putin—money in exchange for loyalty—is coming to an end. Where will Mr Kadyrov’s 20,000 men go? What will they demand? How will they act? When will they come to Moscow?” Those rhetorical questions were posed by Mr Nemtsov shortly before his death.
