Tens of thousands packed a Tel Aviv square Saturday calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to lose the March 17 parliamentary election.
The protesters stood under a huge banner reading "Israel Wants Change."
Meir Dagan, the former chief of Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, gave the keynote speech. He said Israel was suffering from a leadership crisis that he said scared him more than Israel's enemies.
"Benjamin Netanyahu has served as prime minister for six consecutive years,. During that time, Israel has never been more stuck," Dagan said. "During these six years, he hasn't led one sincere incentive to foment change in the region or to craft a better future."
Opinion polls show Netanyahu's conservative Likud party nearly tied with the left-leaning Zionist Union. But Likud said it would have enough allies in parliament to be able to form a coalition and keep Netanyahu in office.
Netanyahu made a controversial visit to Washington last week, where he addressed the U.S. Congress and called a possible nuclear agreement with Iran a "bad deal."
Some Israelis have criticized the prime minister for not working harder for a peace deal with the Palestinians.
But Netanyahu has said he will not negotiate with a government that includes Hamas militants, who refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to visit Iran in the “near future” according to Iran’s official spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Marzieh Afkham, Iranian news channel Press TVreported today.
Russian parliamentary advisor and founder of Russia’s Contemporary Iran Institute Radjab Safarov has estimated that Putin’s visit to Tehran could take place as soon as next month, telling Russian newspaper Rossiskaya Gazeta it would take place between April and May.
Afkham did not say what the meeting would focus on, but it comes shortly after Russia’s state arms contractor Rostec issued a statement that it was considering selling Iran aircraft and Antey 2500 ballistic air missiles, which are capable of taking down ballistic and cruise missiles.
Iran is currently under UN-backed trade sanctions in a bid to curb its uranium enrichment programme which could potentially be used for the development of nuclear weapons. Russia, however, has continued to court the country with economic and defence deals.
Moscow previously offered to supply Tehran with another missile system with a shorter range than the Antey 2500 in 2010, but the deal was put on hold after the U.S. and Israel put pressure on the Russian government not to go ahead with the sale.
Last month the Iranian ambassador to Russia, Mehdi Sanaei, told Russian TV channel Rossiya Segodnya Iran still hoped Tehran’s “Russian friends” would supply them with the missile system in 2015.
Shortly afterwards Sergey Rebyakov, Russia’s deputy foreign affairs minister, called for sanctions on Iran to be suspended so the two countries can widen their military partnership.
The Russian minister of economic development Sergey Ulyokaev also visited Iran recently, in November, to discuss a possible deal between the two countries, which would see Russia supply Iran with grain and industrial materials in exchange for oil.
The U.S. has since warned Russia against breaching international trade sanctions on Iran and threatened to “act”, should Moscow refuse to uphold them.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has been one of Iran’s staunchest critics, warning the US Congress yesterday that Tehran was allegedly backing anti-Israeli terror groups in Gaza, Lebanon and the disputed territory of Golan heights.
Netanyahu then compared Iran’s uranium enrichment programme to Nazi Germany, alleging that not only would it be dangerous for Israel but for global security. The Iranian government dismissed the allegations today as “boring and repetitive”.

Хорошо известно, что одна из существенных статей расходов - это расходы на оборону, безопасность, на силовые ведомства в целом. В этой связи хотел бы вас поблагодарить за то, что, несмотря на проделанную работу по оптимизации, удалось сохранить основные параметры гособоронзаказа и программы вооружений, что чрезвычайно важно для того, чтобы достичь планируемых параметров по обновлению армии и флота. Должны быть продолжены работы по реконструкции и строительству новых военных городков. Должны быть решены вопросы, запланированные на этот год вопросы, связанные с предоставление жилья, в том числе окончательно может быть решен, и я надеюсь на это, вопрос с предоставлением служебного жилья. Ну и, наконец, в этом году должны быть проинденксированы пенсии военным пенсионерам. Имею в виду и военных пенсионеров Министерства обороны и других силовых ведомств.

US plotting to topple Putin by aiding Moscow opposition: Russia by The European Union Times
Russia’s Security Council has accused the United States of plotting to oust President Vladimir Putin by aiding opposition groups.
Nikolai Patrushev, the council’s chief, said on Wednesday that Washington is financing the opposition and encouraging mass demonstrations against Putin.
Patrushev added that the US funds Russian political groups under the guise of promoting civil society, just as in the “color revolutions” in the former Soviet Union republics.
He went on to say that Washington also uses sanctions over the Ukraine crisis as a “pretext” to inflict economic pain and cause discontent.
Combating color revolutions
“It’s clear that the White House has been counting on a sharp deterioration in Russians’ standard of living, mass protests,” Patrushev said, adding that Moscow can stand against the pressure thanks to its resilience and “decades of experience in combating color revolutions.”
The comments come a week after a Russian protest leader was murdered near the Kremlin. Russia’s Putin described as politically motivated the killing of Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy premier, who had joined the opposition.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an end to “shameful” political murders in his country, following the killing of the Kremlin critic.
US officials have dismissed the suggestion of a plot, with White House spokesman Josh Earnest calling the idea “outrageous and false.”
US President Barack Obama also has prolonged the anti-Russia sanctions introduced on March 6, 2014 “to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
The sanctions were imposed by the US and the European Union after they accused Russia of being involved in the Ukrainian conflict that broke out last year. Russia has repeatedly denied the accusation.
The two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in the eastern Ukraine have been hit by deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in April last year to crush pro-Russia protests there.

The number of drug deaths involving heroin has soared four times since 2000 throughout much of the United States, new statistics indicate. Most of the increase in heroin fatalities occurred after 2010, with the highest rate among adults aged 25–44.
“From 2000 through 2013, the age-adjusted rate for drug poisoning deaths [in the US] involving heroin nearly quadrupled from 0.7 deaths per 100,000 in 2000 to 2.7 deaths per 100,000 in 2013,” says a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study used data from 28 states.
Heroin overdoses by gender vary differently as men die from heroin overdose four times as often as women. In 2013, the number of fatal overdoses involving heroin “was nearly four times higher for men (6,525 deaths) than women (1,732 deaths),” says the research.
The increase in deaths affects the whole country, with the Midwest being particularly hard hit.
“From 2000 through 2013, the age-adjusted rate for heroin-related drug-poisoning deaths increased nearly 11-fold in the Midwest region (from 0.4 to 4.3 per 100,000).”
The highest rate for heroin-related drug-poisoning deaths was among adults aged 25–44. From 2010 through 2013 the death rate for this group increased from 1.9 to 5.4.
According to the report, in 2013 “non-Hispanic white persons aged 18–44 had the highest rate.” In 2000, non-Hispanic black persons of the same age had the highest rate.
“From 2000 through 2013, rates increased for both age groups (18–44 and 45–64) and race and ethnicity groups (non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and Hispanic), with the largest increases seen among non-Hispanic white persons.”
“Identifying populations at high risk of heroin-related drug-poisoning death can help target prevention strategies,” says the study.
In January, the CDC said that 2,000 more people died from heroin-related deaths in 2013 than in 2012, as prescription painkillers became harder to obtain and led to a rise in cheaper, illicit street drugs.
“These troubling statistics illustrate a grim reality: that drug, and particularly opioid abuse, represents a growing public health crisis,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.
