Russian President Vladimir Putin is deeply unpopular in much of the world right now - but evidently not in his hometown where they are building a statue of him in the style of a Roman emperor.
His nation's intervention into Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea led to international sanctions being applied to Russia.
But in the city of St Petersburg, where Putin was born on 7 October 1952 when it was known as Leningrad, locals have decided to celebrate their famous son.
A statue that depicts Putin in a toga has already gone into production and the prototype is currently on display at the local academy of arts.
It shows Putin in a classical pose mimicking the same face that would have been used by philosophers of ancient times who dressed similarly in tunics.
Project manager Andrey Polyakov said: "We planned for quite a while to do a project like this in honour of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
"The main thing was that we wanted to do it during his lifetime to say thanks to him for the return of the Crimea to our country.
"Putin is the state's wisdom, its courage, and its symbol which is embodied in the image of the Emperor that we have created."
Reports last year suggested that Putin's popularity in Russia had increased massively following the Ukraine crisis, with his approval ratings seeing a 20 point surge.
Sculptor Pavel Greshnikov, 42, said he thought for a long time before deciding what form the statue should take, before choosing the classic Roman statue design which was most appropriate for Putin's personality and achievements.
The final sculpture will be made in bronze and unveiled on 9th May in a ceremony that many hope Putin will also attend.
The 9th of May is known as Victory Day in the country, marking when Nazi Germany fell to the Soviet Union.
It comes after a sex toy resembling the Russian leader went on the market.
The controversial device, which is made of coarse sandstone and deemed unsafe for sexual use, is the brainchild of graphic designer Fernando Sosa.

A bust of Vladmir Putin, depicting the Russian leader dressed as a Roman emperor, is to be unveiled in St Petersburg.
The Roman-style statue is being gifted by St.Petersburg’s fiercely nationalist Cossack community to commemorate the allies’ victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War.
The comparison of the strongman with the leaders of ancient Rome was in-part inspired by Putin’s decision to back pro-Russian separatists in the Ukraine,Newsweek reported.

St Petersburg’s traditionalist Cossack group Irbis, a popular organisation supporting Slavic military values, said the bust of Putin will be placed at an underground station in north St Petersburg.
The city, formally Leningrad, is Putin’s home town.
The bust’s designer, sculptor Pavel Greshnikov, was quoted as saying he had considered portraying the Russian leader in a suit and tie, in military fatigues and even in medieval armour.
The statue is complete with a laurel wreath and other trappings of the Roman Empire.
It is at Greshinov’s workshop at the St Petersburg Academy of arts, ahead to its unveiling.

Putin may have upset some people with his Ukrainian activities, but in his hometown he is still popular
Cossacks have grown in popularity in Russian since the fall of communism in the 80s and 90s.
The group, which prides itself on military valour and its Russian Orthodox Christian roots, has particularly warmed to Putin’s increasingly traditional values.
Andrey Polykov, a local Cossack leader in St Petersburg, backed the creation of the Putin Statue.

He was quoted as saying the Russian leader was one of the country’s ‘brightest’ and most ‘positive’ heads of state for ‘the last hundred years or so’.
Polykov claimed Putin had a record as a peacemaker following wars in Georgia in 2008 and Moldova in the early 1990s.
Boris Yeltsin, Putin’s predecessor, has also been immortalised in sculpture. A statue of the post-Soviet leader was erected in Yekaterinburg in 2011.

Дмитрий Рогозин с издевкой поделился впечатлениями от пребывания в "национализированном" имении экс-губернатора Донетчины и опубликовал фото
Вице-премьер-министр России Дмитрий Рогозин отдохнул на крымской даче Сергея Таруты, которую представители так называемой местной "самообороны" захватили после аннексии Крыма весной 2014 года.
О своем визите в санаторий "Айвазовский", который принадлежит Таруте, Рогозин сообщил у себя в Facebook.
Российский чиновник поделился впечатлениями от "изысканного японского сада с сакурой и причудливыми гигантскими камнями, специально привезенными из Японии" и венецианской мозаики на ступенях в санатории.
При этом Рогозин не скрывал своей радости по поводу того, что оккупанты захватили санаторий Таруты, и Россия смогла его "национализировать".
Сам Тарута пока визит Рогозина в оккупированный Крым никак не комментирует.

Следственный комитет планирует возбудить уголовное дело против депутата Государственной думы от фракции КПРФ Дениса Вороненкова, сообщается в пресс-релизе ведомства.
СК хочет привлечь Вороненкова в качестве обвиняемого по делу о мошенничестве.
Вороненков является членом думского комитета по безопасности и противодействию коррупции.
«Группой лиц, в которую входили два бывших сотрудника правоохранительных органов, риелтор и другие соучастники, в 2010–2011 годах совершены преступные действия, в результате которых единственный участник компании ТОМА был лишен права собственности на 100% долей в его уставном капитале. Следствием получены данные о том, что организовал совершение указанных преступлений и руководил их исполнением депутат Государственной думы Федерального собрания Российской Федерации Денис Вороненков», — сообщил официальный представитель СК Владимир Маркин.
СК направил в Генпрокуратуру документы для решения вопроса о лишении депутата Вороненкова неприкосновенности и даче согласия на привлечение его в качестве обвиняемого.
Ранее сообщалось, что депутат Госдумы Мария Максакова сочеталась браком с коллегой по парламенту Денисом Вороненковым. Это была первая в истории российского парламента свадьба депутатов из разных фракций: Мария Максакова-Игенбергс состоит в «Единой России», а ее новый супруг Вороненков является членом КПРФ.
Президент России Владимир Путин освободил от должности ряд заместителей глав региональных центров МЧС России. Соответствующий указ опубликован на сайте Кремля.
Глава государства уволил замглавы Дальневосточного регионального центра МЧС Ерема Арутюняна, двух заместителей главы Северо-Кавказского регионального центра МЧС Олега Блохина и Виталия Пленникова, замглавы Северо-Западного регионального центра МЧС Игоря Горбатенко, двух заместителей главы Сибирского регионального центра МЧС Александра Еремеева и Виктора Панчекова, замначальника Дальневосточного регионального центра МЧС Сергея Желтова, замглавы Приволжского регионального центра МЧС Андрея Ковтуна, замначальника Уральского регионального центра МЧС Сергея Петровского, замглавы Южного регионального центра МЧС Станислава Ропотова и замначальника Уральского регионального центра МЧС Валерия Устинова.
Кроме того, уволен глава Спасательного центра ведомства Александр Лекомцев.
Ранее сообщалось, что Путин освободил от должности главу управления МЧС по Москве Александра Елисеева и его заместителя Александра Гаврилова.
Это помогло бы избежать такой ситуации, как на Украине, заявил в интервью телеканалу CNN человек, который возглавлял Госдепартамент при Джордже Буше-старшем. Он также подчеркнул, что нынешние российско-американские отношения вернулись к временам «холодной войны»:
«Но также нам и нашим союзникам в Западной Европе нужно найти способ вернуть Россию в сообщество наций. После холодной войны и развала Советского Союза нам надо найти способ, как позволить России вступить в НАТО. Это политический альянс и в то же время альянс в сфере безопасности. И обращаться с Россией надо не с помощью «плана Маршалла», а как мы поступили с Германией и Японией после Второй мировой войны. Дать им вступить в сообщество, включить их в команду. Этого не случилось. Думаю, если бы это действительно произошло, то мы сегодня, возможно, не наблюдали бы такое положение дел. Поскольку, если вы помните, у нас было 15 лет объективно очень хороших отношений с Россией, как при Ельцине, так и при Путине. Первые пять лет своего правления Путин склонялся к Западу, и мы сообща сделали многое. И мы не были в том положении, в котором мы сегодня находимся. Сейчас российские бомбардировщики летают над Норвегией и над Балтийским регионом, либо рядом с ними. И выходит, что мы почти уже вернулись туда же, где мы были в течение 40 лет».
Владимир Путин, по мнению Бейкера, сейчас поступает подобным образом, как действовал Гитлер в 30-е годы прошлого века.

Премьер-министр Швеции Стефан Левен не приедет в Москву на празднование 70-летия Победы. Как сообщила пресс-секретарь главы правительства Анне Экберг, решение связано с позицией России по Украине, передает SVT.se. На Параде Победы на Красной площади 9 мая от Швеции будет присутствовать посол страны в РФ.
При этом пресс-секретарь Левена отметила, что Швеция испытывает большое уважение к огромным жертвам, принесенным Россией в ходе Второй мировой войны.
Ранее глава администрации президента РФ Сергей Иванов заявил, что на Парад Победы в Москву приедут 25 зарубежных лидеров и несколько международных организаций. В марте пресс-секретарь президента РФ Дмитрий Песков заявил, что отказ некоторых западных стран от участия в Параде Победы не повлияет на масштаб праздника.

На закрытой встрече с бюро правления РСПП президент РФ Владимир Путин рассказал, что украинский лидер Петр Порошенко предложил ему «забрать Донбасс» в состав России.
Как стало известно Forbes, речь идет о закрытой части мероприятия 19 марта, когда президент РФ встретился с бюро правления Российского союза промышленников и предпринимателей (РСПП) после выступления на съезде союза. Большую часть встречи Путин посвятил ситуации на юго-востоке Украины, пишет издание.
По словам собеседника Forbes, Путин рассказал бизнесменам, что Порошенко на переговорах «нормандской четверки» в Минске 11-12 февраля предложил тому забрать Донбасс в состав России. "Он (Порошенко — прим. ИА REGNUM) мне прямо сказал: «Забирайте Донбасс». Я ему ответил: «Сбрендил, что ли? Мне Донбасс не нужен. Если вам не нужен, то объявите о его независимости», — привел слова Путина один из источников издания.
Пресс-секретарь президента РФ Дмитрий Песков не подтвердил и не опроверг изданию данную информацию.
В субботу, 4 апреля, строители космодрома «Восточный» в Амурской области начали забастовку и голодовку, требуя, чтобы им выплатили задержанные зарплаты. По информации«Коммерсанта», голодать начали 26 человек. В общей сложности предприятие задолжало работникам 14 миллионов рублей, и большинству из них зарплата не выделялась с января этого года. Из-за этого строители перестали работать еще 24 марта.
Разобраться в проблеме премьер-министр России Дмитрий Медведев поручил вице-премьеру РФ Дмитрию Рогозину, отвечающему в правительстве за военно-промышленный комплекс. О поручении сообщила пресс-секретарь главы правительства Наталья Тимакова: «Председатель правительства в телефонном разговоре поручил Дмитрию Рогозину в кратчайшие сроки разобраться с причинами задержки выплаты зарплат строителям космодрома и погасить существующие задолженности». Поручение главы правительства было уже в субботу принято к исполнению: проведены переговоры по телефону и запланирован приезд на место.
В воскресенье Рогозин отправился из Крыма на Дальний Восток на стройку, чтобы в понедельник провести встречи на месте. По его словам, в целом ситуация была урегулирована еще в субботу по телефону: «Я, чтобы не допустить голодовки, позвонил руководителю бастующего коллектива. Он включил громкую связь, чтобы все слышали. Я дал мои личные гарантии, что все вопросы будут решены. Они мне поверили, я им благодарен, забастовка завершена», — рассказал Рогозин РИА Новости, всю эту ситуацию в целом он называет «вопиющей». Вице-премьер заявил, что больше не допустит «историй, которые омрачают великую стройку, которая ведется и будет доведена до конца». Сообщается, что постепенно выплаты рабочим уже начались, однако их масштабы пока незначительные.
Рабочих космодрома заявляют, что их устроили гарантии Рогозина, и голодовка уже во второй половине субботы прекратилась: «Мы своего добились — поговорили с Рогозиным (по телефону) и поняли, что (в правительстве) взялись конкретно за эти организации! Мы верим этому человеку, он пообещал разобраться с подрядными организациями и попросил прекратить нас голодать»,— приводит «Коммерсантъ» слова одного из рабочих,представившегося Евгением.
О запланированной забастовке было известно еще 2 апреля, тогда один из участников забастовки рассказал радиостанции «Говорит Москва» о положении дел: «Мы приехали в ноябре, работали до 24 марта. Привезли вчера всего лишь 100 тысяч на всех, хотя только мой расчет — 130 тысяч за два месяца», - сказал рабочий. Он также сообщил, что рабочим на стройке не хватает предметом первой необходимости, их плохо кормят и не обеспечили перчатками для работы в сильный мороз. Рабочий также рассказал, что у строителей нет даже возможности уехать, потому что у них нет денег на билеты домой.
Накануне начала голодовки глава Спецстроя России Александр Волосов вылетел на место строительства космодрома, чтобы решить проблему невыплаты денег сотрудникам.Результатом переговоров Волосова и коллективов строительных компаний стала договоренность, что все долги перед рабочими будут погашены до 10 апреля.
Напомним также, что 1 апреля стало известно, что крупнейший филиал Федерального агентства по специальному строительству, генеральный подрядчик ФГУП «Дальспецстрой» не смог предоставить Генпрокуратуре информацию о расходовании 16 миллиардов рублей,которые быливыделены из бюджета на строительство космодрома. При этом, по информации«Коммерсанта», 3,3 миллиарда рублей были потраченына погашение кредитов предприятия, а не на строительство космодрома. Сообщается, что еще 500 миллионов рублей,предназначенных для Восточного, бывший руководитель «Дальспецстроя» Юрий Хризман потратил на строительство торгового центра в Хабаровске. И еще 400 миллионов рублей оказались на счетах фирм-однодневок, с которых затем и были обналичены. В этой связи по строительству космодрома Восточный возбуждены уже семь уголовных дел, ведется расследование еще десяти.
Месяцем ранее, в начале марта, Счетная палата выявила перерасход в 13 миллиардов рублей при строительстве наземной инфраструктуры Восточного. По словам главы ведомства Татьяны Голиковой, в результате проверки была вскрыта схема расчетов, по которым строительные сметы завышались, а денежные средства, выделенные в соответствии с этими сметами,размещались на депозитах.
Несмотря на это, в тот же день правительством было решено увеличить размер авансов при финансировании строительства космодрома Восточный. «В связи с обращением Спецстроя о необходимости увеличения авансирования до 85% от суммы контрактов и решения межведомственной комиссии по строительству космодрома Восточный подготовлено и принято постановление правительства РФ от 14 марта №226, что позволяет продолжить финансирование объекта», — цитирует «Интерфакс» слова главы Роскосмоса Игоря Комаров.В ходе совещания, посвященному ходу работ на космодроме, он озвучил основные проблемы.Как оказалось, это не только невыплата зарплат рабочим, но и сильное отставание по срокам строительства ряда объектов и недостаточное финансирование.
Проблему с отставанием по срокам в Спецстрое пообещали устранить. Даже с учетом нынешнего опоздания директор организации Александр Волосов заявил, что космодром Восточный будет сдан Роскосмосу раньше декабря 2015 года. «На Восточном трудятся все главки Спецстроя. Работы организованы в три смены. Сдать космодром заказчику мы должны раньше декабря с тем, чтобы Роскосмос провел на стартовом комплексе подготовительные работы по носителю. И мы это сделаем», — сообщил Волосов «Российской газете» в четверг.По его мнению на середину недели, штаб контролирует выполнение строительных графиков,численность работников и техники, а также следит за поставками и монтажом оборудования,осуществляет мониторинг финансирования и контроль за расходами, координирует работу по формированию отчетности. По словам Волосова, за последнее время удалось сделать серьезный рывок и достичь общей строительной готовности космодрома в 80%.
Вскоре после этого заявления Рогозин сообщил, что правительство поддержало его инициативу об ужесточении ответственности за срыв сроков возведения космодрома. К осуществлению контроля будет подключен Национальный центр управления обороной. Эти слова были произнесены в четверг во время видеоконференции по проблемам Восточного. Неделей ранее был согласован формат еженедельных телеотчетов из штаба Спецстроя в Углегорске.
Проблема же с финансированием, которое, по словам Комарова, является недостаточным, может увеличиться. В пятницу, 3 апреля, стало известно о предполагаемом сокращении финансирования программы по созданию обеспечивающей инфраструктуры космодрома на2,9 миллиарда рублей. «Известия»сообщили, что соответствующая информация содержится в законопроекте «О внесении изменений в федеральный закон «О Федеральном бюджете на2015 год», который на прошлой неделе был принят Госдумой в первом чтении. На этот год предполагалось, что по программе будет выделено 28,8 миллиардов рублей, однако после секвестра останется только 25,9 миллиарда рублей. В Роскосмосе это объяснили общим сокращением объемов государственного бюджета. В Спецстрое сообщили, что несмотря на сокращение финансирования, все поставленные задачи будут выполнены.
Напомним, что строительство космодрома Восточный ведется вблизи городов Свободный и Углегорск Амурской области в соответствии с указом президента РФ Владимира Путина от 6ноября 2007 года и распоряжением правительства РФ от 14 января 2009 года. Работы по строительству начались в июле 2012 года. Планируется, что первый пуск ракеты-носителя произойдет в конце 2015 года, а первый запуск пилотируемого космического корабля — в 2018году. Однако ход работ, похоже, не внушает уверенности в успехе. Об этом можно судить по частоте визитов Рогозина: нынешнему предшествовали приезды в конце февраля и середине марта. В ходе бесед на месте вице-премьер неоднократно повторил: Олимпиада в Сочи закончилась — теперь главная стройка страны находится именно здесь. Три года назад вице-премьер зафиксировал личную заинтересованность в соблюдении сроков, заявив: «Мы к 2015 году сделаем космодром, зуб даю».

Бывший госсекретарь США Джеймс Бейкер заявил, что США должны были пригласить Россию в НАТО во избежание кризиса на Украине. Об этом он заявил в интервью телеканалу CNN.
«Нам и нашим союзникам в Западной Европе нужно найти способ вернуть Россию в сообщество наций. — отметил Бейкер, — После холодной войны и развала Советского Союза нам надо найти способ, как позволить России вступить в НАТО».
По словам экс-главы Госдепа, РФ могла бы пойти по пути ФРГ и Японии после Второй мировой войны и быть включенной в команду НАТО, но этого не случилось.
Бейкер подчеркнул, что в настоящее время взаимоотношения США и России «уже почти вернулись туда же, где были в течение 40 лет».

Президент Азербайджанской Республики Ильхам Алиев находится с официальным визитом в Королевстве Саудовская Аравия. В Эр-Рияде он провел встречи с королём Салманом ибн Абдул-Азизом Аль Саудом, с другими государственными чиновниками, в ходе которых была «отмечена важность взаимопонимания и взаимовыгодного сотрудничества между исламскими странами и перспективы расширения сотрудничества в экономической, в частности, нефтегазовой сфере, в области туризма, сельского хозяйства, а также между деловыми кругами». Разумеется, в ходе этих переговоров затрагивались и проблемы региона, который все больше и больше погружается в геополитический хаос. Поэтому в ситуации, когда в Йемене разворачиваются «революционные события», в которых обозначены противоречия между Ираном и Саудовской Аравией, когда Иран после подписания промежуточного соглашения с «шестеркой» по ядерной программе вступает в фазу выхода из режима санкций и международной изоляции, визит Алиева в Эр-Риад приобретает многозначительный смысл, и, по словам бакинского политолога директора аналитического центра «Атлас» Эльхана Шахиноглу, «в нынешней ситуации это заставляет о многом задуматься». По его мнению, во-первых, в этом визите был заинтересован именно официальный Эр-Рияд, так как он опасается потепления в отношениях между Баку и Тегераном на фоне смягчения международных санкций против Ирана. Во-вторых, этот визит на фоне военной операции в Йемене вызовет раздражение Ирана, в чем не приходится сомневаться. В-третьих, «сближение Азербайджана и Саудовской Аравии соответствует интересам США и Турции». Но проблема как раз в том, что именно США подвели Саудовскую Аравию к йеменскому кризису, создали ситуацию осложнений и в турецко-иранских отношениях. Поэтому более вероятен сценарий формирования турецко-азербайджанского альянса в отношении саудитов. В этой связи глава Управления мусульман Кавказа (УМК) шейх-уль-ислам Аллахшукюр Пашазаде, у которого сложились особые отношения с верховным духовным лидером Ирана аятоллой Сейидом Али Хаменеи, резко раскритиковал военную операцию в Йемене, проводимую Саудовской Аравией и ее союзниками.
Судя по всему, Баку был застигнут врасплох итогами лозаннских переговоров по иранской ядерной программе. Неслучайно бакинский политолог Расим Мусабеков выступил со следующей любопытной версией. С одной стороны, он напомнил, что «президент Обама правомочен дать согласие на снятие санкций Совбеза ООН в отношении Ирана, но для отмены собственных американских санкций требуется согласие конгресса, в котором большинство у Республиканской партии с недоверием относится к соглашению с Тегераном, продвигаемому демократической администрацией». Исходя из этого, делается вывод, что « крупнейшие американские энергетические корпорации, инвестиции и современные технологии еще не скоро придут в Иран, и быстрого и существенного увеличения поставок иранской нефти и газа на рынки ожидать не стоит». К тому же «к войне в Ираке, Сирии добавилась гражданская война в Йемене», и во всех них «прямо вовлечены по разные стороны баррикады Саудовская Аравия и Иран, что может крайне отрицательно сказаться на вывозе нефти из этого региона». С другой стороны, как предполагает Мусабеков, «если же выход из изоляции ИРИ вызовет самоуверенное желание Тегерана разговаривать с Азербайджаном сверху вниз, то для нейтрализации возможных попыток такого рода мы можем опереться на поддержку друзей, география которых расширяется и не ограничивается братской и союзной Турцией». Именно в этом смысле визит президента Алиева в Саудовскую Аравию квалифицируется в Баку как «оперативный».
Отметим еще один факт. Глава SOCAR (Госнефтекомпания Азербайджана) Ровнаг Абдуллаев намекнул на то, что Иран после решения о снятии санкций может получить долю в азербайджанском проекте TANAP — части Южного газового коридора, который строится для поставок газа с месторождения Шах Дениз в Каспийском море в Европу через территорию Турции. Теперь, по словам Абдуллаева," актуальность TANAP выросла еще больше". Если это так, то в сложившейся ситуации Баку должен был бы искать «любви ближнего», пробивать визит в Тегеран, а не лезть в гущу региональных геополитических интриг, в которых запутаны, помимо Саудовской Аравии и Ирана, еще многие другие государства. Похоже, что на пути такого хода событий обозначилось немало препятствий. Еще в начале февраля нынешнего года бакинский официоз, директор Центра политических инноваций и технологий Мубариз Ахмедоглу заявлял буквально следующее: «Ирано-азербайджанские отношения переживают хрупкий период. Вывести отношения между Ираном и Азербайджаном на более высокий уровень достаточно сложно, а разрушить — очень просто». Он связывал это с двумя факторами: во-первых, с тем, что «иранские чиновники не считают систему государственного управления Ирана устоявшейся в нынешний период глобализации», поэтому « самой большой угрозой для Ирана сегодня является несоблюдение устоявшихся традиций государственности». Если расшифровать этот тезис, то из него следует следующее: Баку недоволен тем, что Тегеран относит Азербайджан к зоне своих исторических национальных интересов, поскольку это государство сформировалось из ханств, находившихся некогда под управлением Персидской империи. И, во-вторых, поэтому, по Ахмедоглу, «сказывается устаревший негативный багаж ирано-азербайджанских отношений и стереотипное мышление», то есть второй тезис вытекает из первого. Наконец, третий тезис: экстраполирование напряженности в ирано-турецких отношениях на связи Ирана с Азербайджаном, которые практически всегда воспринимались в Тегеране негативно. В этой связи Ахмедоглу предлагал Тегерану, находившемуся тогда еще в режиме переговорного процесса с «шестеркой» по ядерной программе, подготовить и предложить Азербайджану некую «дорожную карту». Тогда из этой затеи ничего не получилось. Теперь же Иран может выставить такую «карту» Азербайджану, но она может быть иной, нежели предполагали в Баку. На данном этапе более вероятно то, что Иран активизирует свою политику в Закавказье и станет выдавливать оттуда Турцию, тем более что он имеет сухопутную границу с Азербайджаном.
Другое дело, если визит Алиева в Эр-Риад сопряжен с определенной посреднической миссией, ставящей целью ослабить напряжение в саудовско-иранских отношениях. Но пока это только возможное предположение, построенное на нюансах: шиитский Азербайджан, налаживая и расширяя сотрудничество с суннитской Саудовской Аравией, пытается показать, что не видит в этом какой-либо религиозной подоплеки. Но фактом становится то, что Баку погружается в сеть региональных геополитических интриг и схем, выйти из которых ему будет день ото дня все сложнее и сложнее.

A newspaper investigation found the famously secretive regime forces workers to post messages through the night on chat rooms and online comment threads hailing Putin and denigrating his foes in the West.
According to the Guardian, which conducted interviews with workers at the covert site, bloggers are forced to work 12-hour shifts with fines issued for being a few minutes late or for not reaching the required number of posts each day.
One blogger who wrote fake posts for the LiveJournal website said she was paid 45,000 roubles (£520) a month and was instructed not to tell any of her friends about the job.
“We had to write ‘ordinary posts’ about making cakes or music tracks we liked, but then every now and then throw in a political post about how the Kiev government is fascist, or that sort of thing,” she said.
Each day, employees are issued with “technical tasks” – instructions reportedly sent by someone high-up in the Russian government explaining what each worker should post.
“The scariest thing is when you talk to your friends and they are repeating the same things you saw in the technical tasks, and you realise that all this is having an effect,” the blogger added.
The workers, who are based in a small office in St Petersburg, said they were also encouraged to post racist or homophobic messages parodying world leaders.
The ‘trolls’ said they worked in groups of three, with the one person leaving an innocuous post online before the other two members of the team replied with links to articles on pro-Russian websites or with embarrassing photographs of western or Ukrainian politicians with abusive captions.
Another former worker said: “Of course, if every day you are feeding on hate, it eats away at your soul.
"You start really believing in it. You have to be strong to stay clean when you spend your whole day submerged in dirt.”
Meanwhile, Moscow has accused the United States of pursuing a “frenzied anti-Russian campaign” in the media.
The Russian Foreign ministry claimed American “propagandists” were responsible for "Russophobic lampoons, carefully building an image of Russia as an enemy, instilling hatred of anything Russian in ordinary people."

Just when I thought I had seen and heard everything, an event took place that caught me totally off guard. I am still trying to make sense out of something that makes no sense at all.
At 9:53 a.m. March 24, Germanwings Flight 9525 took off from Barcelona, Spain en route to Dusseldorf, Germany. One hour later the plane crashed into the French Alps, killing all 150 persons aboard. Frantic families, investigators and airline officials asked the same question—“What happened and why?” The answers (preliminary though they are) are quite shocking.
Investigators at the scene were quickly able to retrieve the Cockpit Voice Recorder. The data it revealed painted a chilling picture of the final minutes of Flight 9525.
Here’s what we know. The Captain (pilot) had left the cockpit to go to the washroom. The co-pilot, who has been identified as Andreas Lubitz, was asked to prepare the plane for its descent, final approach and landing in Dusseldorf. What happened next defies all explanation.
Here’s what’s been confirmed. The plane began a rapid descent shortly after the captain left the cockpit. The keypad that unlocks the cockpit door was disabled making it impossible for him to get back in and take control of the plane. Frantic calls from Air Traffic Control, other planes in the vicinity and members of the flight crew went unanswered. As to Lubitz’ condition, the CVR revealed that his breathing was normal and controlled through the entire event.
The CVR tells one half of the story. Investigators are still looking for the Flight Data Recorder. If it can be located and data from it can be retrieved, we will know if the plane (an Airbus A320) had any sudden mechanical problems. Then we’ll know everything that the airplane can tell us.
What we will never know is precisely why this tragedy took place.
People will speculate—and they already have. Much of the focus has been on Lubitz himself. He has been accused of deliberately crashing the plane and, as French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said: “all the signs are pointing in that direction.” The signs may be pointing in that direction now. But will they still be pointing that way two years from now when the final report of the investigation is complete? They may—but there is an equal chance that they may not.
How should we respond to tragedies such as this? Let me offer two suggestions.
First, we must avoid passing judgment on anyone until we know all the facts. The accusations being made against Lubitz are based on minute amounts of evidence. We need to allow those who are investigating this tragedy to complete their work and release their findings.
Their first priority is to recover and identify the victims’ bodies; after which they can be released to their families for funeral services and burial. Only then can they begin to sift through the piles of evidence collected to determine what happened and why.
Second, we must support the families of the victims; even though they live half a world away. We do this by offering prayers for them. The God we worship is an omnipresent God. He was there the day Flight 9525 went down. He knows exactly why this tragedy took place.
One day, he will tell us what he knows. Until then, let us pray that God will fill the families, friends and colleagues of those who died in this tragedy with his comfort and peace and that they will be surrounded by people who care.
