Buying drugs on the street is a risky business, it is often said; you never quite know what you are getting. But after realising the wrap of white stuff you’ve just spent £50 on is actually 0.6g of scouring powder, what recourse do you have?
Greater Manchester police is now offering to help.

'Poisoned' Russian whistleblower was fatalistic over death threats

Alexander Perepilichnyy, who had a rare poison in his stomach when he died abruptly in Surrey, feared revenge over his role in exposing a huge fraud in Russia
A Russian whistleblower took all reasonable precautions in the months leading up to his death, but was nonetheless “fatalistic” about threats to kill him from powerful enemies in Moscow, a friend has said.
Alexander Perepilichnyy collapsed and died in November 2012 outside his luxury home in Weybridge, Surrey, after he had been out jogging. Surrey police insisted there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. But a pre-inquest hearing heard on Monday that traces of a rare and deadly plant poison had been found in his stomach.

Analysts Say Loss of Ramadi Shows Inherent Iraqi Army Weakness

Analysts say the fall of the Iraqi city of Ramadi to Islamic State insurgents has again demonstrated inherent weaknesses in the Iraqi army.   Iraqi government military and security forces fled Ramadi Sunday, the capital of Anbar Province, in the face of an IS onslaught. Left behind for the terrorists was a trove of weapons, artillery, vehicles and other gear, just like when IS captured Mosul last June. To analyst Gareth Stansfield, at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in...

The Guardian view on the Gerry Adams handshake: a brave act of reconciliation

Prince Charles smiled at the apologist for his great uncle’s murder. Gerry Adams smiled at the colonel in chief of the Paras
The long, smiling handshake between Gerry Adams and Prince Charles, balancing an informal cup of tea in one hand, was a historic moment not only because it was the first such encounter in the Republic since partition. It happened only because each of them was prepared to look beyond old wounds that as Mr Adams, the Sinn Féin president, acknowledged, have not been entirely healed by peace. For both, it was an encounter of personal significance that also challenged the prejudices of their supporters. It was an unusual moment of collective conciliation between a symbol of republicanism and a symbol of British monarchy – and a moment of almost intimate forgiveness.
It is more than 35 years since Lord Mountbatten, his grandson Nicholas Knatchbull, 14, and a 15-year-old local boy, Paul Maxwell, were blown up by the Provisional IRA at a time when Mr Adams was what is coyly described as a “leading figure” in the republican movement. At the time, he justified the murders by claiming that Mountbatten was too old a soldier not to be aware of the “danger involved in coming to this country”. On the same day, at Warrenpoint, 17 British soldiers were blown up in another Provisional IRA bomb.

Whether it’s welfare standards, environmental impact or the emerging threat to human health, we’ve got to change our insatiable greed for this meat
It’s the insouciance that baffles me. To participate in the killing of an animal: this is a significant decision. It spreads like a fungal mycelium into the heartwood of our lives. Yet many people eat meat sometimes two or three times a day, casually and hurriedly, often without even marking the fact.
I don’t mean to blame. Billions are spent, through advertising and marketing, to distract and mollify, to trivialise the weighty decisions we make, to ensure that we don’t connect. Even as we search for meaning and purpose, we want to be told that our actions are inconsequential. We seek reassurance that we are significant, but that what we do is not.

How to lose the president of the United States

Extreme late Twitter adopter Barack Obama this year managed to snag the handle @POTUS? How did he do it? Carelessness, that’s how
“Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account.” So went the first tweet from President Obama for his brand new @POTUS “president of the US” account, which garnered a million followers in less than five hours.
An immediate question springs to mind: as an extreme late adopter of Twitter, how did President Obama manage to snag the @POTUS handle? When I joined Twitter in 2009, the straightforward @timdowling was already being used by an estate agent from Austin, Texas. All the world’s Tim Dowlings have subsequently been obliged to compromise. How could a name as covetable and obvious as @POTUS still be up for grabs in 2015?

Lithuanian power grid was built with Jewish tombstones in Soviet past

In this photo taken on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, Shmuel Levin, the Chairperson of the Jewish religious Community of Vilnius and Lithuania, looks at the power substation built of tombstones from a Jewish cemetery in Vilnius, Lithuania. Tombstones from a Jewish cemetery were used to build a power substation in the 1960s. City officials now want to tear it down and return the tombstones to Lithuania¿s tiny Jewish community, which was nearly wiped out during the Holocaust. They¿re also investigating whether there are other examples of Jewish tombstones being used as building material during the Soviet occupation, when the communist authorities paid little attention to religious symbols.
