Reeling from punishment at the polls, Spain's major parties prepared Tuesday for negotiations with anti-establishment newcomer groups while Poland's governing party assessed how to reconnect with voters who ousted the president. The elections held Sunday in the two countries exposed a common theme: Voters, many of them economically hurting or with friends or relatives who are, were turned off by politicians who snubbed their key concerns. There is no such thing as the black vote – this election proves it

There is more discord than consensus in the ethnic minority vote. To pretend there is a ‘non-white’ political unanimity misses the point
In the run-up to the general election, there were numerous campaigns and voices trying to mobilise the “black vote”. These calls were predicated on the idea that ethnic minority voters could hold the key to the election result. A study by Operation Black Vote argued that demographic changes would mean that the ethnic minority vote could swing the balance of power in over 100 seats, and therefore, if this vote was mobilised, politicians would have to engage with a more diverse set of voters and their concerns in order to win. Comparisons to the US were made; across the Atlantic, a demographic shift is causing significant issues for the Republican party, who struggle to appeal to ethnic minorities.
But when the 2015 general election result came through, it showed something quite different to what had been expected: that it is time to move beyond the myth of the power of the black vote.
Asian groups were almost twice as likely to vote for the Conservatives as black (African and Caribbean) communities

Pot luck: tea researchers find Britain's oldest cuppa

Academics studying rise of UK’s national drink discover 17th-century box of leaves and flowers from China in stores of Natural History
Museum.
The oldest tea in Britain, a box of leaves and flowers neatly labelled “a sort of tea from China” more than 300 years ago, has turned up in the stores of the Natural History Museum in London.
When it was brought back by James Cuninghame, a Scottish surgeon and amateur naturalist in the late 17th century, tea was still a fabulous rarity, sold at between six and 60 shillings a pound, 10 times the price of even the best coffee. Cuninghame was a passionate plant hunter, and may have collected his samples at Amoy in Fujian province, or on the island of Chusan where he described tea growing wild and the local farmers preparing the leaves for the drink.

Terrorist Nuke Attack May Be Carried Out Inside the United States in Next 12 Months

Finding the scientists to build such a weapon, whether dirty or actual, wouldn’t be all that difficult.
With nuclear material having been stolen on multiple occasions in Mexico, and close terrorist ties to intelligence organizations in the middle east, it appears that if an organization was committed to acquiring nuclear material they could do so. Finding the scientists to build such a weapon, whether dirty or actual, wouldn’t be all that difficult. Moreover, smuggling such a device into the U.S. is possible, as evidenced by a 2011 report which confirms that at least one nuclear weapon of mass destruction was seized as it entered the United States.
According to a report from Zero Hedge, such a plan may be in the works over the next twelve months, as the Islamic State claims it may be actively pursuing a nuclear weapon intended for detonation on American soil.
Three weeks after the first supposed attack by Islamic State supporters in the US, in which two ISIS “soldiers” wounded a security guard before they were killed in Garland, Texas, the time has come to raise the fear stakes.
In an article posted in the terrorist group’s English-language online magazine Dabiq (which as can be see below seems to have gotten its design cues straight from Madison Avenue and is just missing glossy pages filled with ‘scratch and sniff’ perfume ads ) ISIS claimed that it has enough money to buy a nuclear weapon from Pakistan and “carry out an attack inside the United States next year.”
In the article, the ISIS columnist said the weapon could be smuggled into the United States via its southern border with Mexico.
Curiously, the author of the piece is John Cantlie, a British photojournalist who was abducted by ISIS in 2012 and has been held hostage by the organization ever since; he has appeared in several videos since his kidnapping and criticized Western powers.
As the Telegraph notes, “Mr Cantlie, whose fellow journalist hostages have all either been released or beheaded, has appeared in the group’s propaganda videos and written previous pieces. In his latest work, presumed to be written under pressure but in his hall-mark style combining hyperbole, metaphor and sarcasm, he says that President Obama’s policies for containing Isil have demonstrably failed and increased the risk to America.”
Cantlie describes the following “hypothetical” scenario in Dabiq :
Let me throw a hypothetical operation onto the table. The Islamic State has billions of dollars in the bank, so they call on their wilayah in Pakistan to purchase a nuclear device through weapons dealers with links to corrupt officials in the region.
The weapon is then transported overland until it makes it to Libya, where the muj?hid?n move it south to Nigeria. Drug shipments from Columbia bound for Europe pass through West Africa, so moving other types of contraband from East to West is just as possible.
The nuke and accompanying mujahadin arrive on the shorelines of South America and are transported through the porous borders of Central America before arriving in Mexico and up to the border with the United States.
From there it’s just a quick hop through a smuggling tunnel and hey presto, they’re mingling with another 12 million “illegal” aliens in America with a nuclear bomb in the trunk of their car.
Cantlie continues:
Perhaps such a scenario is far-fetched but it’s the sum of all fears for Western intelligence agencies and it’s infinitely more possible today than it was just one year ago. And if not a nuke, what about a few thousand tons of ammonium nitrate explosive?
That’s easy enough to make. The Islamic State make no secret of the fact they have every intention of attacking America on its home soil and they’re not going to mince about with two muj?hid?n taking down a dozen casualties if it originates from the Caliphate. They’ll be looking to do something big, something that would make any past operation look like a squirrel shoot, and the more groups that pledge allegiance the more possible it becomes to pull off something truly epic.
Remember, all of this has happened in less than a year. How more dangerous will be the lines of communication and supply a year on from today? If the West completely failed to spot the emergence of the Islamic State and then the allies who so quickly pledged allegiance to it from around the world, what else of massive significance are they going to miss next?
One can, of course, debate just how much the West “failed to spot the emergence of ISIS” considering it was not only the CIA which initially trained the terrorist organization in Jordan in 2012, but according to recently declassified Pentagon documents, the US was well aware the outcome its attempt to overthrow Syria’s Assad would have on the region, in the process “creating” ISIS, aka al Qaeda 2.0.
In other words, even the “hypothetical operation” involving a nuclear attack on US soil would implicitly have the blessing of the US government. Which, considering the way the stock market surges every time the US economy deteriorates further on its way towards recession, probably means that a mushroom cloud appearing in some major US metropolitan area is just what the E-mini algos would need to send the S&P500 limit up.
Source: Zero Hedge
We have definitive confirmation via declassified documents that the Islamic State is a creation of the U.S. Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency, and their influence across the middle east was predicted well in advance of anyone ever having heard the name ISIS or ISIL. We also know that false flag operations, such as the German Reichstag fire of 1933, are often used by governments (or rogue elements within a government) to implement changes to existing political and social paradigms.
It could be that this nuclear threat is a psychological operation designed to elicit fear in the populace so that they go along willingly with legislative actions like the Patriot Act which further erode individual rights in the name of protecting us from terrorism, or to justify large scale military operations on U.S. soil, including but not limited to this summer’s Jade Helm exercises.
Or, certainly within the realm of possibility, is the notion that at some point a rogue terror element, the origination and loyalty of which makes absolutely no difference in the end, is planning on detonating a nuclear device on U.S. soil.
Perhaps this is one reason for why the elite are rapidly investing in secret hideaways. Perhaps they know it’s time to start exiting large metropolitan areas ahead of whatever is coming. Perhaps it all starts with a bang and a mushroom cloud, soon followed by panic, riots, looting, and of course, the unprecedented domestic military response that would be necessitated by a widespread breakdown of civil order.
We can only speculate, but the fact is that another large-scale attack on U.S. soil would usher in a new era in the Land of the Free.
Admittedly, we have delved deep into the rabbit hole of conspiracy theory, but we leave the reader the following quote to consider within the context of this current threat:
The process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor.
Project for a New American Century, 2000 (PDF Link)
Signed by Jeb Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, et. al.
At the very least the American people are being psychologically conditioned to accept their own enslavement. At worst, an event such as this would be used to plunge the world into the next great war.

Obama Urges US Senate to Renew Phone-Records Program

US billionaire close to buying Time Warner for $55 billion

American company Charter Communications is clinching a deal to buy Time Warner Cable for about $55 billion.
Charter, mostly backed by American billionaire John C. Malone, is set to buy the company following a deal that may be announced as soon as Tuesday, the New York Times reported on Monday.
Charter is said to be paying some $195 a share in cash and stock, an amount approximately 14 percent higher than the cable telecommunications company’s closing stock price on Friday.
The deal would bring about a new mega-merger in the US media industry.
The European telecommunications company Altice agreed to pay some $9 billion to buy Suddenlink last week.
Meanwhile, Charter was also coming close to another agreement over another cable operator, Bright House Networks.
Malone’s efforts to penetrate the American broadband industry last year, failed after Comcast the largest broadcasting and cable company in the world by revenue, bid $45 billion for Time Warner Cable. Comcast ultimately failed to buy Time Warner, however.

Obama Memorial Day Remark Slammed

Barack Obama has made a speech, saying that this Memorial Day is the first in 14 years without major US war. Critics and social media users slammed him as hypocritical, saying the US remains involved in military conflicts and proxy wars.
“Today is the first Memorial Day in 14 years that the United States is not engaged in a major ground war,” Obama said on Memorial Day, a US holiday for remembering those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.
He added that this Memorial Day is the first “since our war in Afghanistan came to an end,” but admitted that about 10,000 US troops remain on a mission to train and assist Afghan forces, even though “Afghanistan remains a very dangerous place.”
“And as so many families know, our troops continue to risk their lives for us,” Obama said.
Obama also said that the wars which America waged were “for democracy, the peace we’ve laid to preserve it.”
The statement by US president was met with strong criticism both from experts and social media users.
“What a joke. Of course the US is still at war,”wrote Brian Fernandes, a user on Facebook.
“The US still has troops in Afghanistan and plans to keep them there for years. And they have fomented wars in Ukraine, Africa, Syria, and now Yemen. The US is the most barbaric war-mongering nation on Earth,” added another, Richard Tina.
The 13-year war US war in Afghanistan ended in December 2014, concluding in a cost of nearly $1 trillion and the lives of over 2,200 Americans, according to the New York Times. Despite America’s combat operations being rolled back, troops remained as part of an agreement reached between Washington and Kabul.
Afghanistan still sees explosions and shootings. In January three US military contractors were killed in Afghanistan, after gunfire erupted at Kabul International Airport’s military facility.
The Taliban’s leadership declared that the Obama administration’s decision to slow US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan would hamper peace efforts in the country.
Washington is “participating pretty directly in an ongoing conflict in Iraq” in addition to a number of proxy wars that they are supporting,” former US marine Ross Caputi told RT.
The war in Afghanistan “is certainly not over, and it won’t be over for many years – arguably even after the US troops leave. Wars always leave a destructive wake of violence after them, and there is sort of lag to the violence also.”
Caputi believes that the US government is attempting to present a certain picture of US foreign policy and US military engagements around the world.
“Most of the time the picture they are trying to present is very different from what is actually going on the ground. This is part of something that they call information operations, and they use a number of tactics in these information operations.”
Washington uses “misinformation” which is a part of “perception management,” he says.
“So that is what they are doing, they are trying to manage way that the public perceives US foreign policy, even if that means deceiving them.”
Countries once invaded or interfered with by the US and its allies – Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia or Syria – have become hotbeds for militants from Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and similar terrorist groups.
Though Washington has not officially declared war since 1941 (in WWII), Syria became the seventh country that Barack Obama – recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize – has bombed in his presidency.
Washington is also involved in on-ground training of the military in the countries, engaged in internal wars, including the one in Ukraine. In April, paratroopers of the US 173rd Airborne Brigade arrived in western Ukraine to provide training for Ukrainian government troops who fight against rebels in eastern Ukraine.

British Leader “Begs” Putin To Spare UK In Coming Nuclear War

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) is reporting today that President Putin ordered this mornings massive snap combat exercise of Federation air forces and air defenses after he received a “rambling/incoherent” telephone call from British Prime Minister David Cameron wherein the UK leader began apologizing for the “coming war” and pleaded for his country not to be retaliated against with nuclear weapons.
During this nearly 30 minute telephone call, this MoD report states, Prime Minister Cameron further related his “belief/feelings” to President Putin that the UK was being “pushed” into this conflict by the Obama regime whose “adventures” in both Syria and Ukraine have cost tens-of-thousands of lives and continue to destabilize the entire world.
Making tensions even worse between the Federation and the West, this report continues, was Prime Minister Cameron’s call coming at the exact time NATO had begun its own massive air force war game exercise along the Federations Arctic border areas, which President Putin has now countered with 12,000 military personnel, up to 250 aircraft, 700 pieces of military hardware and increased combat air patrols along NATO borders.
Equally as disturbing to the Federation, this report says, was information released this past week by the former NSA intelligence analyst and US Navy counterintelligence officer John Schindler wherein he stated that he was told by a senior NATO official, “We’ll probably be at war this summer, if we’re lucky it won’t be nuclear.
One of the Obama regimes top billionaire-oligarch backers, George Soros, this report also notes, this past week has, likewise, warned that World War III between the US, Russia and China is “no exaggeration”.
Aside from these, and many other “warnings” of the West’s intention to start a world war with the Federation, MoD experts in this report note, US Secretary of State John Kerry’s sudden visit to Sochi a fortnight ago, where he requested an emergency meeting with President Putin, has led to even further relationship instability issues between Russia and America in that with so many epic Obama regime policy failures, even the most astute observer can see that total war may be the inevitable outcome.
And to be noted, this report continues, so grave and concerning have some factions within the Obama regime come to realizing how close to world war they are after they were betrayed by the Saudis over Syria and Ukraine over Russia, Secretary Kerry’s emergency visit to President Putin was deemed vital…and as best described by the award-winning geopolitical analyst and international strategic risk consultant F. William Engdahl who in his article Washington Blows Itself Up With Its Own Bomb stated:
“In short, by the point John Kerry was told to swallow hard and fly to Sochi, hat in hand, to offer some kind of peace pipe to Putin, US leading circles, the American Oligarchs had realized their aggressive neo-conservative warhawks like Victoria “F**k the EU” Nuland of the State Department and Defense Secretary Ash Carter were propelling the creation of a new alternative world structure that could spell the ruin of the entire post-Bretton Woods Washington-dominated Dollar System. Oops.”
As Ann Pettifor, the director of Policy Research in Macroeconomics (PRIME) has already warned that the world is on the tipping point of another money meltdown, echoing London’s Guardian news service warnings of a new global economic crash coming, this report explains, the “true goal” of this coming war is world US Dollar hegemony…which the Federation and China are determined to destroy.
And contrary to the West’s vast propaganda machine used in the continued mass deception of their citizens that they are the “best and most powerful in the world”, MoD experts in this report state, the facts remain that the countries aligned with Russia together control about 60% of the world’s GDP, have more than two-thirds of its population, and cover more than three-quarters of its surface…while at the same time Russia’s debt stood at $600 billion, as of 1 January 2015.
With the West, on the other hand, being led by the United States having debt markets at a staggering $60 trillion (the largest in the world and bigger than Europe and Japan combined), this report warns, one can, also, readily understand George Soros’s warning of World War III, and those from the former Reagan administration economic official David Stockman who, likewise, a fortnight ago grimly stated, “We are now entering the terminal phase of the global financial system that will end in total collapse.
And as Chinese leadership today warned the Obama regime that “war will be inevitable” if it doesn’t stop its global meddling, and top Putin advisor Deputy Premier Dmitry Rogozin, likewise, chillingly warned NATO that “tanks don’t need visas”, this report says, both the Federation and China have now joined together to fight against the West’s colour revolutions and economic sanctions that have destroyed to many nations and peoples to count.
To the effectiveness of the United States and its allies in “spreading democracy” for their billionaire oligarchs, and whose neocons hawks are even now ready to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian, this report concludes, their citizens should at least be aware of their past actions…and as, perhaps, best stated by the KyivPost news service:
“America’s recent attempts at muscular foreign policy should be scaring the living daylights out of all Ukrainians. Just look at Iraq. Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator, but twelve years after its liberation by American troops, Iraq is an unmitigated disaster. Half a million dead, millions of displaced persons inside the country and refugees abroad, political disintegration and the rise of ISIS are the heavy toll already paid by Iraqis – and the bill keeps adding up.”
Only when the money printing presses are turned off by the US and EU will the madness stop…otherwise global war will settle this issue like it did in World War I and World War II…

Russia’s Newest Military Games Coincide With NATO Drills

Russia began a new round of air force exercises Tuesday, coinciding with NATO’s military maneuvers in the Arctic at a time of escalating tensions in the region.   700 units of military equipment, 12,000 Russian troops and up to 250 military jets began the drill on Monday. The same day, 100 fighter jets from the United States and eight European nations joined the Arctic Challenge Exercise 2015 consisting of 4,000 military personnel. The Nordic exercises, as they are also called, are to continue until June 4 and will be followed on June 5 by NATO's annual Baltops [Baltic Operations] maneuvers with 4,500 troops from 17 countries. Russia launched the most recent exercise on the order of President Vladimir Putin, sources of the Russian defense ministry said. They are due to continue until May 28 and stretch from the Volga River to Siberia. Nine countries, including five Nordic nations, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden have reported increased Russian air force activity near their borders and have pledged to engage in closer military cooperation. Russia has intensified its military drills since the annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 and Moscow's involvement in the ongoing armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, as its relations with the West are at the lowest point since the Cold War. Poland and the three Baltic countries — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — have increased military spending and have asked NATO allies, particularly the United States, to step up their presence. NATO is already conducting air policing missions in its Baltic members bordering Russia.

The west’s assurances to Soviet ministers on eastward expansion of Nato | Letters

Christopher Clark and Kristina Spohr say correctly (Moscow’s false memory syndrome, 25 May) that no written or oral assurances about Nato enlargement were given during the negotiations for German reunification in 1990. Touching that hot potato could indeed have derailed the talks entirely.
But that was far from all. After Germany reunited, Václav Havel, the Czech president, called for Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary to enter Nato. The British prime minister and foreign secretary assured Soviet ministers that there was no such intention. Nato’s secretary general added that enlargement would damage relations with the Soviet Union. All that was true at the time. But then the intentions changed.

I, Putin

Marx famously observed that when history repeats itself it comes first as tragedy and then as farce. Likewise, Adam Ulam, one of the founding giants of Russian studies in the US, wrote, “Russian history is tragic and glorious, but also preposterous.” Vladimir Putin’s cult of personality long since transcended the farcical to become utterly preposterous. If the costs of his rule — the return of the Gulag, ever greater repression at home, and war at home and abroad — were not so tragic, this cult would not represent a subject deserving serious attention. But the extent, purpose, and continuity of this bloody farce oblige us to analyze its political purposes and significance. In its latest manifestation, St. Petersburg Cossacks commissioned a bust of Putin as Roman Caesar. For some unexplained reason they forgot the laurel wreaths but we will not hold that against them. After all, they wanted to do the right thing and celebrate Putin as a leader beyond all time and history. Indeed, such cults of personality are a hallmark of autocratic dictatorships as Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Mussolini, and a host of lesser monsters, psychopaths, and criminals show us.
Neither is Putin alone today. North Korea’s cults of personality have long since surpassed anything Russia could imagine. Xi Jinping in China clearly has generated a cult after Putin’s example and may see in his “manual supervision” of Russia and personality cult an example worthy of emulation. But the importance of Putin’s cult goes beyond serving as a hallmark of this type of regime or as an example to be copied by other would be tyrants.
First, arguably Putin is more powerful than any ruler since Stalin. Indeed, Putin is arguably the Stalin of today. Furthermore, as befits an alumnus of the KGB, he has incorporated many aspects of Stalin’s political persona and tactics into his regime and his political persona. Obviously one element of this imitation game is the aspiration to establish his political standing as being beyond even the idea of challenge and impress all spectators that he enjoys a status beyond that of mere mortals. Thus in both cases, his and Stalin’s, the personality cult is a cynical political tactic to establish his position beyond any thought of challenge.
But there are more aspects or dimensions to this charade. The personality cult not only enshrines the leader beyond thought of challenge, it represents a deliberate effort, again traditional to autocracies and tyrannies both ancient and modern, to infantilize the public and civic mentality and preserve it in a state of quasi-sacerdotal reverence for the leader who is not just a secular figure but one partaking of divinity. Of course, this appropriates the Tsarist tradition going back to Kievan Rus’ and therefore has deep roots in Russia. But Russia is no longer a medieval state or society. Despite all the state-sponsored blather about Orthodoxy few Russians actually attend Church and the prevalence of violence and corruption attests to the degradation of public morality sponsored by Putin and his cronies. Nonetheless the personality cult is an essential element in preserving the pontifical and sacred aura of the ruler and of depriving the society at large of the ability or desire to think seriously about social or political issues. Thus it contributed mightily to Russia’s moral and cultural degradation, a syndrome that has never fully recovered from the Soviet equivalent of the “revolution of nihilism” that began with Lenin and that applied to it as much as it did to Nazi Germany.
Finally this cult of personality tells us a great deal about Putin’s regime and Putin the man. First of all, it tells us that he knows, as do the organizers of this cult, that the government they supervise is thoroughly illegitimate. Not only must the public be rendered unable to think rationally it must be diverted from a genuine consideration of social realities by means of this deliberate infantilization and regression to quasi-magical forms of comprehension of political phenomena. In other words they are employing what Dostoyevsky’s grand inquisitor called miracle, mystery, and authority. Thus this cult attests to the illegitimacy of the regime and the authorities’ understanding of that fact and need to conceal it. Second, as in Stalin’s case it tells us of the inner insecurity and boundless ego of the ruler. Putin’s well-known efforts to stage phony scenarios of his being “a real man”, most recently as a 62 year old hockey player or Roman Caesar, bespeak a man terrified of growing old one who must simulate ever grater proofs of his masculinity and virility through reported regular Botox injections and staged farces involving deep-sea fishing, hunting tigers, etc. Political scientists would correctly relate this cult to an attempt to use gender as a prop for the regime. But ultimately because he knows it is a façade nothing could really satisfy Putin’s longings for immortality.
Now that Putin has become a Caesar perhaps like Caligula he will become a God or make a horse a member of the Duma. After all, a government that relies on miracle, mystery, and authority, has no real need for rationally organized free institutions. But ultimately the farce will have to end and Putin’s longing for immortality will end as immortal longings generally do. Since neither brass nor stone but sad mortality o’ersteps the world Putin and his cult will disappear leaving not a rack behind beyond the ongoing long-term degradation of Russia’s socio-political life. At that point we could with Shelley, look on the busts and statues of Putin and upon his sneer of cold command and remember Ozymanidas’ lament, “look on my works ye mortals and despair.”

Attrition: Russia Resumes Shrinking

May 26, 2015: The Caucasus (south of Russia, north of Iran) state of Georgia recently announced the results of its 2014 census. This was the first census since 2002 and the news was worse than expected. Current Georgian population is 3.73 million, a 15 percent decline from 2002. Worse, the latest count shows that since Georgia broke away from the Soviet Union in 1991 population has declined 30 percent. Most of this was due to Georgians migrating to other countries for better job opportunities and a better life. Some 70 years of communist rule had turned Georgia into a nice place to visit but, for most Georgians, not a great place to live. The Georgian experience was typical of the former Soviet states in the Caucasus. Armenia, which also became independent lost 12 percent since getting free of Russia. These population declines were common throughout the former Soviet Union.
For centuries Russia (rebranded as the Soviet Union in the early 1920s) was considered a threat to its neighbors by virtue of its larger population. But since the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991 (and half the population broke away to form 14 new nations) the remaining Russian population has been in decline. Twenty years after the Soviet Union collapsed, the Russian population implosion was getting worse. While in the 1990s the population was shrinking at a rate of .1 percent a year, in the first decade of the 21st century that increased to .2 percent a year. This was because the non-Slav Russians are having fewer children, just as the Slavs have been doing (or, rather, not doing) for decades. The Russian population has declined three percent since 1989, from 147 to 142.9 million. The proportion of the population that is ethnic Russian (Slav) has declined from 81.5 percent to 77 percent in that same period. The Russian slide could have been worse had it not been for the fact that millions of ethnic Russians in the 14 new states felt unwelcome with government controlled by the locals, not Russians in far off Moscow. Often the locals wanted the ethnic locals in their midst gone and Russia made it easy for ethnic Russians to return to the motherland. This prevented the Russian population decline from being closer to ten percent. Until the recent invasion of Ukraine, sanctions and lower oil prices, the Russian birth rate was growing. That has stopped and more Russians are seeking to emigrate.
Some countries, like Georgia, had no source of eager (or at least desperate) ethnic Georgians wanting to return home or abundant natural resources to pay for a better future. For Georgia most of the traffic was outbound and while the rate of migration has slowed it continues.
