FBI had internal concerns over licence plate readers, documents reveal

Agency deployed mass tracking devices across US that could record up to 1,800 license plates a minute, according to internal documents obtained by the ACLU
The FBI has deployed surveillance technology that can read car license plates around the country despite its own internal worries about the privacy implications of the mass tracking devices, newly released documents reveal.
The paper trail, obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union under freedom of information laws, shows how the FBI has used the technology – known as automatic license plate readers or LPRs – in several of its field offices. But the documents also reveal that privacy concerns have been raised within the agency itself that temporarily put a halt to the practice.

Colombia Defies U.S. and Halts Spraying of Cocaine Crops

Colombia’s government ordered a halt Thursday to the use of a herbicide that has formed a major part of U.S.-backed efforts to wipe out cocaine crops in the country, the Times reports.
The country’s Health Ministry had cited concerns after the World Health Organization reclassified the weed-killer glyphosate as a carcinogen (a cancer-causing substance) in March. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2012 report disagreed, saying there was a lack of convincing evidence that the herbicide causes cancer in humans.
Over the past two decades over 4 million acres of land in Colombia have been sprayed with the herbicide, which kills coca plants (whose leaves are used to make cocaine).
The change in strategy may put a strain on Colombia’s relationship with the U.S. for the first time, as the two countries are usually close allies when it comes to a hard-line approach in the war on drugs. But earlier this month, a White House survey found that the amount of land in Colombia used to grow coca increased by 39% last year
Peru and Bolivia are the two other main cocaine-producing countries, but both avoid chemical herbicides, opting for a more labor-intensive manual eradication instead. This is riskier in Colombia, where the rebel guerrilla fighters have long protected coca crops.

Obama Attended Wedding With Terrorist Bill Ayers

MSNBC personality Alex Wagner’s wedding occurred back in August of 2014, but news has just emerged that at least two of her guests were old Chicago pals: President Barack Obama and unrepentant domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.
The President and First Lady attended the nuptials of White House chef Sam Kass and MSNBC anchor Wagner in August, along with a who’s who of the American far Left. But two of the other guests were particularly interesting. 1960’s era domestic terrorists Bill Ayers and wife Bernadine Dohrn were also at the Pocantico Hills, New York ceremony.
Ayers and Dorhn are notorious, un-indicted terrorists who were once part of the 1960s radical terror outfit the Weather Underground. The pair were involved in deadly 1970s bombings, but managed to escape prosecution. Now both are leading cushy lives as professors at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
For a decade, Obama has tried to distance himself from Ayers and Dorhn. He’s claimed many times that he really didn’t know the notorious anti-American bombers, despite the fact that he launched his political career at a fundraiser in the Ayers’ living room.
During Obama’s first presidential primary, he waved off the accusation that he was a friend of the couple, saying, “This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood… The notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago — when I was 8 years old — somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense.”
Of course, not being a contemporary with the detestable does not preclude familiarity, so Obama’s dismissal is a classic example of doublespeak.
Despite Obama’s denials, the former terrorist himself has confirmed that he was indeed close enough to the Obamas to help Barack launch his political career in Chicago.
In one interview in 2013, Ayers admitted it was true that Obama “held a fundraiser in our living room.”

Baltimore Is Just the Latest Target in Obama’s Civil-Rights Crusade against Police Departments

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
When Republican leaders rationalized confirming Loretta Lynch as attorney general – notwithstanding her stated commitment to facilitating President Obama’s lawlessness – they mumbled about how the country needed to end the tenure of Eric Holder. You may remember him as the original Obama attorney general whose confirmation Republicans strongly supported despite extensive evidence of his unfitness.
As a number of us countered, and as anyone with a shred of common sense knows, major Justice Department policy is and has always been set by President Obama. While Ms. Lynch is temperamentally different from Mr. Holder, her confirmation portended no change of direction.
And so . . . no sooner has Attorney General Lynch been sworn in than she has continued Mr. Holder’s crusade against state and local police departments. She announced on Friday that the Justice Department has opened a “pattern or practice” investigation of the Baltimore Police Department to determine whether – actually, to pave the way for the preordained conclusion that – the BPD systematically violates civil rights. The pretext for the investigation is the death of Freddie Gray in police custody on April 12.
It is important to understand that Holder’s crusade was never Holder’s alone. To repeat, Obama dictates Justice Department policy.
Back in 2008, Republican strategists were scared to death to be seen as inquiring into, much less attacking, Barack Obama’s radical background. No need to dwell on his ties to former terrorist Bill Ayers, we were told. As I (among others) protested at the time, while Ayers’s terrorist past was alarming, it was not the most troubling aspect of Obama’s association with him.
Ayers had remained a proud anti-American radical who openly argued that our country was incorrigibly racist and corrupt. Yet Obama had colluded with him on their joint left-wing passion: criminal-justice “reform.” They appeared on a panel together to argue for keeping even violent juvenile offenders out of the adult justice system. They worked together on boards of left-wing charities to direct funding to like-minded radicals. In 1997, Ayers wrote a book, A Kind and Just Parent: Children of the Juvenile Court, which (as Stanley Kurtz has observed) compares America’s juvenile-justice system to the mass detention of young blacks under South African apartheid. Obama, then a state lawmaker in Illinois, lavishly praised the book as a “searing and timely account.”
A key, if little noticed, part of Obama’s domestic agenda from the start has been to roll back lawful police methods that dramatically reduce crime.
Understand then: For upwards of a quarter-century, we’ve enjoyed a staggering decrease in crime rates nationally, particularly in urban areas, because of engaged, intelligence-driven policing methods. During that time, Obama has been playing for the other team: academic and activist detractors who point to the overrepresentation of blacks in the offender population in a racially charged attack on policing – rather than emphasizing that the overrepresentation of blacks as crime victims is ameliorated by modern policing.
A key, if little noticed, part of Obama’s domestic agenda from the start has been to roll back lawful police methods that dramatically reduce crime. As I’ve previously explained, the Democrat-controlled Congress in the first years of the Clinton presidency gave him the tool he needed: the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. It enables the attorney general to file lawsuits against cities and towns that, it contends, engage “in a pattern or practice of conduct by law enforcement officers . . . that deprives persons of [federal] rights.”
The Obama administration has used this heavy-handed provision as a sledgehammer to put numerous state and local police departments under federal supervision. The suits accuse cops of “excessive force, discriminatory harassment, false arrests, coercive sexual conduct, and unlawful stops, searches or arrests,” as the Justice Department puts it in a brochure. The DOJ then bludgeons the targeted municipalities into agreements – “consent decrees” – that impose Obama-approved policing methods.
Locales under the control of progressive Democrats tend to invite the administration to come “fix” their police. Other cities and towns would like to fight but they cannot compete with the Justice Department’s $28 billion budget; agreeing to comply is their only realistic option.
Holder lustily carried out the mission, but it is Obama’s policy. Not only has the new attorney general promptly sustained it; she has adopted what we might call her predecessor’s “pattern and practice” of imposing it: the exploitation of controversial interactions between police and black men. I’ve previously recounted this modus operandi:
Holder streams in behind a tragedy that [Al] Sharpton and Obama have demagogued. He announces a civil-rights investigation. Eventually, he backs down from the threat of an indictment in the individual case, never conceding that the supporting evidence was not there. . . . But, the attorney general is pleased to add, the original civil-rights probe of the non-crime has metastasized into a thoroughgoing civil-rights probe of the state or local police department’s training, practices, and . . . drumroll . . . institutional racism.
Under our new attorney general, the old story is replaying in Baltimore. Even as the Maryland state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby rashly announced last week that the agitators’ cries of “no justice, no peace” after Mr. Gray’s death had induced her to file murder and other homicide charges against the police, Ms. Lynch made it known that the Justice Department was considering a civil-rights case. Soon, Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the close Obama political ally who directed police to stand down while rioters torched and looted, publicly called on the Justice Department to investigate the BPD’s “pattern and practices” – which one might have thought was the mayor’s job. On cue, Ms. Lynch has now announced her probe.
It is an utterly predictable development but an amazing one nonetheless. As Investors Business Daily points out, “just two months ago, President Obama held up the Baltimore police force as a model of unbiased community policing.” A report from the president’s “Task Force on 21st Century Policing” gushed that Baltimore – with a police department now almost 50 percent black and led by a black commissioner – had already implemented “national best practices for policies and training.” The city, the White House said, had modified those “outdated procedures” that “put officers at odds with the community.”
Alas, it appears that Baltimore is a policing success just like Yemen is a counterterrorism success. But not to worry: With Mayor Rawlings-Blake ready to sign on the dotted line, and state’s attorney Mosby making it known that cops risk being prosecuted when they make good-faith arrests, Baltimore will soon have its Obama-compliant consent decree.

Obama Secretly Partied With Bill Ayers Last Summer

Obama Secretly Partied With Bill Ayers Last Summer
On Aug. 30, 2014, MSNBC anchor Alex Wagner and former White House chef Sam Kass got married at a private wedding north of New York City. It was widely reported at the time that President Obama, a longtime friend of the groom, attended the ceremony with his family. There were two other notable guests, however, whose attendance has been successfully kept secret: Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, the former campus radicals whose loose association with the Obama family over the years has inspired countless Fox News fever-dreams and led to Sarah Palin’s famous accusation that Obama “pal[s] around with terrorists.”
We recently heard that Ayers and Dohrn, both former leaders of the Weather Underground, themilitant left-wing group best known for bombing empty government buildings in the 1970s, were also present for the Wagner-Kass celebration at the Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a restaurant and event space in Pocantico Hills, New York.
While the fact that Obama was literally partying with former advocates of violent struggle against the U.S. government will no doubt be taken by his critics as further evidence that he hates America, the most interesting thing about the wedding is the shocking proof it offers that—at long last!—Obama truly no longer gives a fuck about keeping up political appearances. It’s unthinkable that the Obama of the 2008 or 2012 campaigns would have been permitted to go anywhere near Ayers or Dohrn, for fear of fueling the unhinged right-wing narrative that he is a radical leftist.
Ayers and Dohrn were likely invited due to their connection to Kass. Though the nature of their relationship with him is unclear, Kass resided for several years in Chicago, where Ayers and Dohrn live, and appear to have close mutual friends. In 2012, for example, the trio attended the same 22-guest wedding at a San Francisco art gallery.
It is difficult to say much beyond that, however, because the principals have refused to comment on the event, refusing repeated opportunities to deny that Ayers and Dohrn were present. Ayers, Dohrn, Kass, and Wagner did not acknowledge multiple requests for comment. The White House and MSNBC were similarly reticent. “It was a private event and we are not going to comment any further,” an MSNBC spokesperson told Gawker via email. White House spokesperson Jennifer Friedman declined to comment, citing the fact that the wedding was a private event—but the White House has commented on private events in the past, to the point of confirming the presence of certain guests.
Obama Secretly Partied With Bill Ayers Last Summer
Ayers and Dohrn, who are 70 and 73, were linked to dozens of bombings of evacuated buildings belonging to the U.S. government and financial institutions, and helped design much of the Weathermen’s philosophical framework. The pair went into hiding between 1970 and 1980 after a bomb—allegedly prepared to maim Army soldiers at New Jersey’s Fort Dix—prematurely detonated in the basement of a Greenwich Village townhouse used by Weathermen to stage guerrilla attacks. Neither were ever charged for their involvement in any specific Weathermen bombing, but Dohrn—who spent three years on the FBI’s Most Wanted list—eventually pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. Ayers went on to become a well-known scholar of education, and Dohrn became a professor at the Northwestern University School of Law and co-founded the school’s Children and Family Justice Center.
Obama has played down his association with the couple since 2008, when a variety of critics in both the Republican and Democratic camps began suggesting that he had formed his beliefs in the mold of Ayers’s revolutionary politics. This accusation arose from the fact that Obama and Ayers lived in the same neighborhood, Chicago’s Hyde Park, for a period of time in the 1990s. The two men and Dohrn attended the same parties, and had some of the same friends, but otherwise did not develop a close friendship.
Still, Obama’s first presidential campaign was forced to “condemn” the Weathermen—and, by extension, Ayers and Dohrn—after Ben Smith, then at Politico and now the editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed, reported that Obama had launched his 1995 campaign for the Illinois State Senate at the couple’s home in Hyde Park, with the grace of their mutual friend and outgoing state senator Alice Palmer, who named Obama as her successor at the gathering.
“Obama’s relationship with Ayers is an especially vivid milepost on his rise, in record time, from a local official who unabashedly reflected a very liberal district to the leader of national movement based largely on the claim that he can transcend ideological divides,” Smith wrote.
The implication that Obama was influenced by the architects of the Weather Underground remains absurd. The group was formed in 1969 in response to the American invasion of other countries, particularly Vietnam, based on the Leninist conviction that the struggle between the world’s major imperial powers and the people who labored under their domination would inevitably catalyze a global Communist revolution. Needless to say, a sober evaluation of Obama’s political career indicates little, if any, of Ayers’s or Dohrn’s alleged influence.
Indeed, in 2013, Ayers argued that every U.S. president should be prosecuted for war crimes—in Obama’s case for his wanton use of drone strikes in the Middle East. Early into Obama’s first term, Dohrn said that the “the real terrorist is the American government.”
Due perhaps to the prominent profile of the bride and groom, the Wagner-Kass ceremony was unusually secretive; with the exception of the president and his family, and now Ayers and Dohrn, the identities of the other attendees remain unknown. There are no publicly available photos of the event, nor were we able to locate a single post on social media—including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram—that was published by an attendee. Because of this we can’t say with certainty whether Obama danced, conversed, or even interacted with either Ayers or Dohrn at the wedding, which could have had a maximum of 260 guests, to judge by the Stone Barns’ capacity.
While the Obama White House obviously no longer cares about serving up softballs to the Drudge set—indeed, the decision to party with Ayers borders on active trolling—his Secret Service may have taken a different view. According to the Washington Post, the agency typically bars “people with...arrests or convictions for assault and related offenses or any history of mental illness...from having any access to the president.” Even though Dohrn can hardly be regarded as presenting a threat to anyone these days, her conviction for aggravated battery—reportedly related to an attack on a police officer at a Chicago protest in 1969—is the sort of history that the president’s protectors would normally take an interest in. The Secret Service declined to answer questions about the wedding.
Of course, the people taking the biggest risk in showing up at the wedding were Dohrn and Ayers, who have now been revealed as willing to briefly set aside their anti-war principles so they could hang out with someone they regard as a war criminal.

  • Flashback: Stephanopoulos Pressed Obama on Ayers in '08 Dem Debate

On April 16, 2008, on ABC at the Pennsylvania Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate between the two remaining candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, then-Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Barack Obama (D-IL), moderator George Stephanopoulos and subsequently Hillary Clinton, pressed Obama on his relationship with former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers.
Stephanopoulos asked, “A gentleman named William Ayers. He was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that. And in fact on 9/11 he was quoted in The New York Times saying ‘I dont regret setting bombs I feel we did not do enough.’  An early organizing meeting for your state Senate campaign was held at his house, and your campaign has said you are ‘friendly.’ Can you explain that relationship for the voters and explain to Democrats why it won’t be a problem?”
Obama replied, “This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis. And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense, George. The fact is, is that I’m also friendly with Tom Coburn, one of the most conservative Republicans in the United States Senate, who during his campaign once said that it might be appropriate to apply the death penalty to those who carried out abortions. Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn‘s statements? Because I certainly don’t agree with those either. So this kind of game, in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, is somehow — somehow their ideas could be attributed to me — I think the American people are smarter than that. They’re not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn’t.”
That led Hillary Clinton to pick up after Obama’s response and press him more on his association with Ayers.
“Well, I think that is a fair general statement, but I also believe that Senator Obama served on a board with Mr. Ayers for a period of time, the Woods Foundation, which was a paid directorship position,” Clinton said. “And if I’m not mistaken, that relationship with Mr. Ayers on this board continued after 9/11 and after his reported comments, which were deeply hurtful to people in New York, and I would hope to every American, because they were published on 9/11 and he said that he was just sorry they hadn’t done more. And what they did was set bombs and in some instances people died. So it is—you know, I think it is, again, an issue that people will be asking about. And I have no doubt—I know Senator Obama’s a good man and I respect him greatly, but I think that this is an issue that certainly the Republicans will be raising. And it goes to this larger set of concerns about, you know, how we are going to run against
. You know, I wish the Republicans would apologize for the disaster of the Bush-Cheney years and not run anybody, just say that it’s time for the Democrats to go back into the White House. (Laughter, applause.) I know that they’re going to be out there, full force. And you know, I’ve been in this arena for a long time. I have a lot of baggage, and everybody has rummaged through it for years. (Laughter.) And so therefore, I have, you know, an opportunity to come to this campaign with a very strong conviction and feeling that I will be able to withstand whatever the Republicans send our way.”
