Five reasons we should celebrate Albert Einstein

From his radical thinking to his radical politics, his disavowal of celebrity to his wild hairstyle, the great physicist’s significance endures, argues his biographer
Einstein was, first and foremost, a scientist. In 1905 and again in 1916, he radically revised our understanding of the universe. He was a pictorial thinker who came up with a new, intuitive sense of what reality looked like. Physics at the start of the 20th century was a rather settled endeavour, not seemingly in need of radical revision. We thought light was a wave and that duration, length and mass were objective facts of the world. We thought that space was a flat, Euclidean entity, unaffected by the distribution of matter and energy within it. Einstein, a mere patent clerk when he first began suggesting differently, showed us that light must be thought of as a particle when it is emitted or absorbed, that matter is composed of atoms, that space is malleable, undulating with the distribution of the stuff within it, that how long or massive an object is or the time order of closely occurring events is not a fact of the world, but merely a fact of our point of view. He showed that these perspectival truths were well-behaved when they were placed in a four-dimensional conceptual framework. Seeing may be believing, but what we should believe about the universe, Einstein demonstrated, requires seeing it from a reference frame beyond that of the human senses.

Al Jazeera is anti-Israel and discriminates non-Arab members of staff, says former employee suing the network - Americas - World

Details of the claim against Al Jazeera America (Ajam), brought by the former head of its documentary unit, Shannon High-Bassalik, emerged on Thursday evening.
It is the latest in a series of legal actions taken against the network by former senior staff in recent weeks.
Ms High-Bassalik claims Ajam’s former chief executive, Ehab Al Shihabi, would leave meetings when women were speaking and would shout at them in front of colleagues when they complained.
He would treat such women as “simply being emotional... asking them why they 'didn't love me anymore,’” according to the lawsuit.
It claims that the network has abandoned “journalistic objectivity” in order to “advance a pro-Arabic/Middle Eastern agenda, often at the expense of Jewish people.”
The former documentary head said she was told that many Arabs believe that 9/11 was orchestrated by the CIA to justify waging war on the Arab world, and that the network should be guided by this belief. (HENNY RAY ABRAMS/AFP/Getty Images)
In the US, Al Jazeera only manages to get around 30,000 viewers a night. “As ratings failed to live up to the expectations of management, Al Jazeera openly decided to abandon all pretense of neutrality in favor of putting the Arabic viewpoint front and center, openly demanding that programs be aired that criticized countries such as America, Israel and Egypt,” Ms High-Bassalik's lawsuit stated.
The network decided to “cast Israel as the villain,” in its coverage of the Gaza conflict, claimed Ms High-Bassalik. She accused the head of the company's investigative unit of tweeting that “Israelis are like Hitler.”
And the former documentary head said she was told that many Arabs believe that 9/11 was orchestrated by the CIA to justify waging war on the Arab world, and that the network should be guided by this belief.
Ms High-Bassalik said she was told to hire an Arabic woman as a producer despite their lack of qualifications for the job; and that performance ratings for Arabs were systematically upgraded, while non-Arabs saw their ratings go down.

She had complained to senior staff that the network was “actively advocating a discriminatory attitude towards people who were not Middle Eastern and/or Arabic.”
The experienced producer, who has worked at CNN, NBC and MSNBC, was fired in February mid-way through a three-year contract.
Ms High-Bassalik, from Connecticut, who stated that she was accused of being an ineffective leader who had problems getting on with others, is suing for back pay and unspecified damages.
Her lawsuit is the latest controversy to hit the network. Mr Al Shihabi stepped down last month, in the wake of several lawsuits and resignations in recent weeks including that of Marcy McGinnis, the network’s former senior vice president for news gathering. “I didn’t want to be there anymore because I didn’t like the culture of fear,” said Ms McGinnis. Her resignation came just days after the network’s chief of human resources, Diana Lee, and its executive vice president for communications, Dawn Bridges, resigned.

In a lawsuit brought several weeks ago, Matthew Luke, Ajam’s former director of media and archive management, claimed he had been fired after complaining about the network’s senior vice president for broadcast operations and technology, who is said to have remarked: “Whoever supports Israel should die a fiery death in hell.”
And Mohamed Fahmy, former acting bureau chief for its English channel in Egypt, who spent more than a year in prison on terrorism-related charges, filed a $100m (£53m) lawsuit against Al Jazeera in a Canadian court last month - accusing it of negligence and failing to provide security to him and his colleagues.
In a statement responding to the latest lawsuit, brought by Ms High-Bassalik, a spokesperson for Ajam dismissed the allegations as “unfounded” and said: “Al Jazeera values and respects all of its employees, and has zero tolerance of any form of discrimination.” They added: “Al Jazeera America’s new CEO Al Anstey stressed the importance of respect, transparency, and integrity in his first message to staff last month.”

Two U.S. men charged with beheading plot to help Islamic State

BOSTON Prosecutors charged two U.S. men on Friday of plotting to help the Islamic State militant group by beheading Americans, after an investigation that led law enforcement officers to shoot a suspect dead last week in Boston.
The case follows a handful of so-called "lone wolf" attacks in the United States and Canada since last year by people whom authorities said were inspired by Islamist State, which controls parts of Syria and Iraq and has vowed attacks on the West.
The men, Nicholas Rovinski, 24, of Rhode Island, and David Wright, 25, of Massachusetts, are accused of making plans with Wright's uncle, Usaamah Abdullah Rahim, to kill the organizer of a Mohammed cartoon exhibit in Texas in May, and later to target Massachusetts police, a U.S. Department of Justice statement said.
Prosecutors say that "beginning at a date unknown but no later than May 2015, Wright, Rovinski and Rahim conspired to commit attacks and kill persons inside the United States, which they believed would support ISIL’s objectives," using an alternative acronym for the group.
Police shot 26-year-old Rahim dead last Tuesday when FBI agents and a Boston police officer approached him in a parking lot to question him. Authorities said Rahim threatened the law enforcement officers with a knife. Wire taps of his phone calls had revealed Rahim was planning to behead police officers, law enforcement authorities said.
Prosecutors said the three men initially wanted to behead New York resident Pamela Geller, who had organized an event in Texas highlighting cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, images that many Muslims consider blasphemous. Two gunmen had attacked that event, and were shot dead by police.
Prosecutors said Rahim later called Wright to say he had revised his plan and instead intended to attack "those boys in blue", by which he meant Massachusetts police officers.
"Wright urged him to first wipe his laptop computer and to destroy his phone so that they could not be searched by law enforcement, and urged him to make a will," according to the Justice Department statement.
Rovinsky and Wright are charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Islamic State, an offence that carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
Rovinski, who is also known as Amriki aka Nuh al Andalusi, was arrested at his home on Thursday night, and will appear in court on Friday. Wright, also known as Dawud Sharif Abdul Khaliq, has been in custody since last week on a charge of obstruction of justice. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 19.

US Charges 2 Men as Islamic State Supporters

WASHINGTON—
U.S. authorities say two men accused of plotting to attack police officers in Massachusetts are being charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Islamic State militants.
A U.S. Justice Department statement named the accused as David Wright, 25, of Everett, Massachusetts, and Nicholas Rovinski, 24, of Warwick, Rhode Island. Rovinski was arrested Thursday and was due to appear in federal court in Boston Friday; Wright is scheduled to appear at a later date.
"Wright and Rovinski are charged with conspiring with each other, unknown conspirators and Usaamah Abdullah Rahim, 26, Wright’s uncle, who lived in Roslindale, Massachusetts, until his death on June 2, 2015," the statement said. "Rahim was shot and killed after he attacked law enforcement officers in a Roslindale parking lot."
The statement said all three men - Wright, Rovinski and Rahim - had been plotting to "commit attacks and kill persons inside the United States, which they believed would support [Islamic State's] objectives."
Targeted cartoon contest organizer
The suspects allegedly had planned to attack and behead a New York man who organized a controversial gathering in Texas recently that featured a cartoon contest lampooning the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Hopwever, that plan later was abandoned, U.S. authorities said.
"Rahim advised Wright that, instead, he intended to attack “those boys in blue” (meaning police officers) locally in Massachusetts," the Justice Department said. The attack, supposedly set for last month, apparently did not occur.
Friday's developments followed a court appearance outside Washington on Thursday of an American teenager who confessed that he tried to help Islamic State militants recruit supporters and raise funds.
Ali Shukri Amin, 17, pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group - offenses that carry a possible sentence of 15 years' imprisonment. The U.S. Department of Justice said Amin also admitted helping another young American travel to Syria earlier this year to join Islamic State fighters.
The U.S. Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John Carlin, said Amin used social media in his efforts on behalf of the Islamic State group. Carlin said Islamic extremists on "the other side of the world" are reaching out to young people in an attempt to "radicalize, recruit and incite" them to violence, and he called on parents and community leaders to confront and deter such threats.
