Police Fear Bangkok Bombing Suspect May Have Fled

Despite new surveillance video that may offer a possible clue to the bombing in central Bangkok that killed 20 people, Thai police said Sunday that the perpetrators may have already fled the country, and that they will "need some luck" to catch them.
Surveillance video leaked to Thai media shows a man in a blue shirt placing a bag on a riverside walkway, then kicking it into the water on Monday night shortly after the explosion several kilometers (miles) away at the downtown Erawan shrine. About 18 hours later, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, an explosion took place at the same spot near a busy pier, causing no casualties.
Col. Winthai Suvaree, a spokesman for Thailand's ruling junta, also said that closed circuit television showing the main bombing suspect was used to trace the route he took to and from the site of Monday evening's rush-hour attack. He said that a police sketch of the suspect had been distributed to border posts.
Police spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri said he believes the perpetrator would have timed an escape carefully and "wouldn't have much time to stay around."
"I suspect that he may have left, but we will keep searching, in case we can find others who may be in the country or find clues, evidence and witnesses who may have seen him," he told Channel 3 TV network.
Police have offered a reward that on Friday was raised to 3 million baht ($85,000). On a police arrest warrant, the suspect is described as a "foreign man," although a military spokesman said a connection to international terrorism seemed unlikely.
Thailand's police chief Somyot Poompanmoung said investigators would need some luck to catch those behind the attack.
"I have to say we need some luck. If the police have good fortune, we might be able to make an arrest, but ... if the perpetrator has good fortune maybe they can get away," he told reporters Sunday after a ceremonial show of security strength meant in part to reassure the public over safety.
Meanwhile, authorities have arrested two people for allegedly spreading "false information," apparently in connection with the shrine bombing.
A student who posted a bomb threat on Facebook was arrested in Ayutthaya on Saturday and was charged with a computer crime that is punishable by up to five years in jail and a fine of 100,000 baht ($2,800), Winthai said. He did not give details of the second arrest except to say it happened in Bangkok. Ayutthaya is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Bangkok.
Winthai said the two people were arrested for spreading "false information causing confusion in society," but did not say whether their posts were directly linked to the bombing.
So far the operation to find who carried out the attack appears to have made little headway, with apparently contradictory statements coming from the military-backed government and the police.
Theories abound as to who was responsible for the attack.
They include ethnic Uighurs (pronounced WEE-gurs) angry that Thailand repatriated to China more than 100 of their countrymen who had fled from there; Islamic separatists who have been carrying out an insurgency in southern Thailand for a decade; frustrated supporters of former Prime MinisterThaksin Shinawatra angry at the military government that opposes his return to politics; and rival factions within the army contending for power.

Police say 7 dead after jet in UK airshow crashes into road

LONDON –  A military jet taking part in a British airshow crashed into a busy main road Saturday, killing seven people and injuring more than a dozen others, police said.
The Hawker Hunter fighter jet, which was participating in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton in southern England, hit several vehicles on a nearby road as it crashed Saturday afternoon. Witnesses told local TV that the jet appeared to have crashed when it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver.
West Sussex Police said seven people died at the scene and one patient with life-threatening injuries was taken to the hospital. Another 14 people were treated for minor injuries.
News video and photographs showed a fireball erupting near trees and huge plumes of thick black smoke rising. A witness, Stephen Jones, told the BBC that the pilot had just begun his display.
"He'd gone up into a loop and as he was coming out of the loop I just thought, you're too low, you're too low, pull up. And he flew straight into the ground either on or very close to the A27, which runs past the airport," Jones said.
The force said all the deaths were believed to have occurred on the road, and no one on the airfield was believed injured. It was not known whether the pilot was able to eject.
The road was closed in both directions Saturday.
Crashes at British airshows are rare, but in 2007 the pilot of a World War II Hurricane died at the Shoreham Airshow after performing an unplanned barrel-roll.
"We mustn't rush to knee jerk reactions about the safety of airshows," said Tim Loughton, a member of Britain's parliament who represents Shoreham. "This is an airshow that's been going for 26 years, only the second time there's been any serious accident, and the first time that spectators and people on the ground have been affected, bad though that is."

2 Planes Collide at Swiss Airshow, Killing at Least 1

Associated Press
At least one person died when two small planes collided in the air and crashed at an airshow in northern Switzerland on Sunday, police said.
The two planes were part of a formation of three and they crashed just before 11:30 local time after they touched each other in the air, according to Meinrad Stoecklin, a spokesman for police in Basel-Landschaft.
The airshow in the village of Dittingen near Basel was temporarily interrupted as rescue teams raced to the scene of the crash, police said.
It was not immediately clear if there were more injured people. Swiss media reported that one pilot managed to escape by parachute.
The two planes were part of a formation of three planes, but the third plane of the formation was not involved in the crash and landed safely, they reported.
On Saturday, seven people died and more than a dozen were injured after a military jet participating in an airshow in the UK crashed into a busy road. The Hawker Hunter fighter jet, which was participating in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton in southern England, hit several vehicles on a nearby road as it crashed. Witnesses told local TV that the jet appeared to have crashed when it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver.

At Least One Dead As Airshow Planes Collide

At least one person has died after two planes collided in mid-air at an airshow in northern Switzerland.
Police said the two aircraft were in a formation of three planes when they crashed in Dittingen on Sunday morning.
There were no further details on casualties.
Daniel Fierchter, a spokesman for the Dittingen airshow, said rescue teams had just arrived at the scene.
It came a day after seven people were killed when a vintage plane crashed at the Shoreham Airshow in the UK.
The Hawker Hunter jet nosedived onto the A27 at Shoreham, West Sussex, smashing into cars after it failed to pull out of a loop-the-loop stunt.
Seven people are known to have died, but police warned more bodies may be found.
Horrified onlookers described seeing the plane flying low to the ground followed by a "huge ball of fire and black smoke".
The crash has raised debate about the safety of airshows, particularly near busy roads.

Afghan car bombing kills at least 12, including 3 AmericansKABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - A suicide car bomber attacked a NATO convoy traveling through a crowded neighborhood in Afghanistan's capital Saturday, killing at least 12 people, including three American civilian contractors for the international military force, authorities said. The Taliban quickly denied it was behind in the attack in Kabul's Macrorayan neighborhood, though the militants increasingly have been targeting Kabul in recent weeks and often don't claim attacks that maim large numbers of civilians.
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) - The first high-level talks in nearly a year between South Korea and North Korea stretched into the early hours of Sunday, as the rivals looked to defuse mounting tensions that have pushed them to the brink of a possible military confrontation. The closed-door meeting in the border village of Panmunjom, where the armistice ending fighting in the Korean War was agreed to in 1953, began early Saturday evening, shortly after a deadline set by North Korea for the South to dismantle loudspeakers broadcasting anti-North Korean propaganda at their border. North Korea had declared that its front-line troops were in full war readiness and prepared to go to battle if Seoul did not back down.
GEVGELIJA, Macedonia (AP) - Thousands of rain-soaked migrants on Saturday rushed past Macedonian riot police who were attempting to block them from entering Macedonia from Greece. Police fired stun grenades and dozens of people were injured in the border clashes. By the end of the day, every one got across, including several hundred migrants, mostly elderly and children, who had remained on the Greek side of the border. Thousands then boarded trains and buses that took them up north to the border with Serbia from where they will attempt to enter European Union-member Hungary.
Congressman says NYC federal building gunman got 'raw deal'NEW YORK (AP) - A man who gunned down a security guard at a federal building in Manhattan before killing himself was a whistleblower who had been given "a raw deal" by the agency that fired him, a New Jersey congressman who took up the man's case said Saturday. Rep. Bill Pascrell said he did not know what made Kevin Downing, a military veteran who had once been employed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, open fire at the New York federal building on Friday.
Puerto Rico, USVI prepare for weakening Hurricane DannySAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A weakening Hurricane Danny approached Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday, but was expected to bring little relief to residents of the drought-stricken northern Caribbean. The Category 1 hurricane was located 635 miles (1,020 kilometers) east of the Leeward Islands Saturday afternoon, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (135 kph). It was traveling west-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph).

Steven Sheerer faces charges of child endangerment and distribution of obscenity to a minor, authorities said Saturday.
Legal showdown looms over the NCAA's ban on paying athletesATLANTA (AP) - Fresh off a ruling that Northwestern University football players can't form a union, the NCAA is about to face a more direct challenge to its longstanding policy of not letting schools pay athletes like they're professionals. A federal judge who issued a landmark decision against the NCAA last year is considering whether to grant class-action status to lawsuits by current and former college athletes seeking to abolish the NCAA's prohibition against competitively paying players. Taken together, the cases carry billion-dollar implications and hinge, essentially, on whether the concepts of amateur athleticism and economic competition can co-exist.

Philip Hammond flies to Tehran to reopen British embassy in Iran

In the first visit by a British foreign secretary to Iran since 2003, Hammond will reopen embassy that was stormed by a mob four years ago
Britain’s embassy in Iran will reopen on Sunday in a sign of the diplomatic thaw between the two nations four years after the building was shut when it was stormed by violent protesters. Philip Hammond is flying to Tehran for a ceremony to mark the move in the first visit to the country by a British foreign secretary since 2003.
The UK has had no diplomatic presence in Tehran since a mob ransacked the British embassy in 2011 but the election of Hassan Rouhani as president brought about a significant improvement in relations.

ISIS Ambushes Kill Up to 50 Iraqi Troops

(BAGHDAD) — A top provincial official in Iraq’s Anbar province says up to 50 soldiers have been killed by Islamic State militants in two separate ambushes in the turbulent region west of Baghdad.
Sabah Al-Karhout, president of the Anbar Provincial Council, told The Associated Press on Saturday that the ambushes took place Friday west of the provincial capital, Ramadi.
He had no more details and there was no immediate word from authorities on the violence.
Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi on Saturday toured the army’s command in Anbar. During a meeting with troops there, a Defense Ministry statement said al-Obeidi counseled that forces must use “caution and precision” when advancing to avoid “unjustified losses.”
The Islamic State group controls about a third of Iraq, including much of Anbar.

At least 12 people were killed and 66 others wounded in a suicide attack in Afghanistan's capital Saturday, the spokesman for Kabul's police chief said. Three were US contractors. The bomber blew up his explosives-laden Toyota Corolla in the Macroyayan area of Kabul, clearly seeking out the convoy of contractors and Afghan civilians as his target. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid sent an email to media denying his group was responsible for the explosion.
