One of the more absurd things being said about the Donald Trump phenomenon is that the media created it. For the record, we didn’t.
First of all, there is no “we.” The news media operate in what should be every conservative ideologue’s dream environment: an unfettered free market. Outlets compete every day — actually, in the Internet age, every hour — to provide consumers with information they need and want. Every editor and news director strives to beat the competition, and the fact is that audiences have decided they need and want to know about Trump.

Puerto Rico’s so-called Walmart tax is dead (for now).
A contentious Puerto Rico tax that targeted the world’s largest retailer and few others was found unconstitutional on Monday by a US district court, a blow to the commonwealth as it teeters on the brink of default.
Last year, the US territory lifted taxes on multinational groups that sold and shipped goods to related entities in Puerto Rico, US capital markets correspondent Eric Platt reports.
The law, which increased the top rate on the island’s minimum alternative corporate income tax by 325 per cent, effectively captured goods shipped to Walmart Puerto Rico by suppliers and its Arkansas-based parent.
The trial was closely watched by both businesses and consumers in Puerto Rico as the island struggles with a $70bn debt burden that its governor has said is unpayable. Walmart was the only business affected by the highest tax rate, which the company said confiscated more than 100 per cent of its profits on the island.
It was not clear if Puerto Rico would appeal the court ruling.
In court documents, the US retailer disclosed that it had paid $45m to cover the tax, which some government officials had openly referred to as “the Walmart tax”.
The graduated scale set a tax rate of 6.5 per cent for businesses with more than $2.75bn in revenues a year. The next highest bracket — for companies with sales between $2bn and $2.75bn — captured only two other companies.
San Juan district judge José Fusté characterised the tax as discriminatory in his 109 page ruling.
“The [minimum alternative corporate income tax] is a legislative money grab pure and simple, funding the personal account of Puerto Rico’s insolvent Treasury from the presumably deeper pockets of large multistate corporations and their local affiliates,” he wrote.
Lorenzo Lopez, a spokesperson for Walmart, called the ruling a victory.
“Because we want to remain in business in Puerto Rico and to be part of the solution to the current fiscal crisis, we are grateful that the court acted so promptly in hearing this case and striking down the tax,” Mr Lopez said.
A spokesperson for the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico and the governor’s office did not respond to request for comment.
