Desmond appeared only half a dozen times with his "Canadian Quartet" -- Ed Bickert on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Jerry Fuller on drums. Fortunately Don Thompson also doubles as a recording engineer, and a number of the club dates were recorded and released. The group also appeared on CBC-TV s Take 30, and were recorded at the Edmonton Jazz Festival.
Paul Desmond is widely recognized for his genius as a melodic improviser and as the benchmark of cool jazz sax players. His warm, elegant tone was one that he admittedly tried to make sound like a dry martini. He and Art Pepper were virtually the only alto players of their generation not directly influenced by Charlie Parker. Desmond was influenced by Lester Young, but took it further, into melodic and harmonic worlds never before traveled by reedmen — especially in the upper registers. Desmond is best known for his years with the Dave Brubeck Quartet (1959-1967) and his infamous composition "Take Five." He met Brubeck in the late '40s and played with his Octet. The Quartet formed toward the end of 1950 and took final shape with Eugene Wright and Joe Morello a few years later. Jazz at Oberlin and Take Five were considered essential purchases by college students of the era, but Jazz Impressions of Japan was its most innovative recording. Desmond played his loping, slow, ordered, and intricate solos in direct contrast to the pianist's obsession with large chords, creating a myriad of textures for melodic and rhythmic counterpoint unlike any heard in jazz. His witty quotations from musicals, classical pieces, and folk songs were also a watermark of his artistry. When the Quartet split in 1967, Desmond began an intermittent yet satisfying recording career. It included dates with Gerry Mulligan for Verve, various sessions with Jim Hall, and a concert with the the Modern Jazz Quartet. He played his last gigs with the Brubeck Quartet at reunions before dying of lung cancer. Desmond's recordings for RCA have gotten box-set treatment and Mosaic issued one of the complete sessions with Hall. Paul Desmond's first genuine all-Brazilian album under the Creed Taylor signature was a beauty, a collection of songs by the then-moderately known Edu Lobo and the emerging giant Milton Nascimento, then only in his early twenties. All Desmond has to do is sit back and ride the Brazilian grooves while lyrically ruminating on whatever pops into his head. It sounds so effortless -- until you try it yourself. The swirling, often gorgeous orchestral arrangements are by Don Sebesky (one CD edition mistakenly gives Claus Ogermann credit on the cover), Airto Moreira leads the samba-flavored percussion forces, and Lobo and his wife Wanda de Sah appear on three of Lobo's four songs. Lobo's "To Say Goodbye," "Circles," and "Martha and Romao" have exactly the brand of wistful sadness that Desmond could communicate so well; on the former, de Sah has to sing well below the register with which she is comfortable, and the strain is painfully obvious. Some of Nascimento's best early tunes are here, including the tense title track, the popping "Catavento," and "Canto Latino." "Catavento" inspires a particularly inventive solo from Desmond where he pulls out one of his age-old tricks, quoting "St. Thomas." You probably are unfamiliar with the small CTI collection featuring the prolific Bruback sax sideman. Sad, because these are amoung the best he did with a larger backing. This has Brazilian lushness right from the first cut. Outubro is a Nascimento tune that will astound you. Look, we are talking Airto, Ron Carter, Dorio Ferrira and Edu Lobo with a who's who in studio greats led by Don Sebesky. You will not regret this masterpiece for one moment. Hell, even the outtakes are gems. Martha & Romao gets so lush you'll put it on repeat at least for an hour..did I regress? Sorry. If that sounds like an exaggeration, wait until you hear the Sergio Mendes '65 alumni, Wanda de Sah literally "breathe" the song "to Say Good-bye." By the way, most people do not know that Sergio Mendes thought this CD up! Here it is, too many of the RCA cuts and too many of the Brubeck stuff is heavily contrived. That is why the Carnegie Hall Live Concert set gives you the REAL Brubeck quartet. This is the same thing. It is so soft and "jazz pure" that the strings only make this CD, and Desmond's next CTI release "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," better. This is a "must have" for any real lover of good music. ~ E. To all of our Christian friends around the world, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I send you these greetings from Jerusalem. I'm standing in the courtyard of this magnificent International Christian Embassy. I'm so proud of our relations with our Christian brothers and sisters. I wonder for many of you if you remember the experience you had when you first visited Israel, when you saw the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or the Via Dolorosa or the Sea of Galilee or Nazareth. I'm sure it moved you deeply.
And it moves us deeply to have this bond with you because we all know that this land of Israel is the land of our common heritage. It changed the story of humanity, it changed civilization. What a magnificent heritage it is. Yet, we also know that it is under attack these days, that the forces of intolerance, of barbarism that attack all religions attack Christians with particular vehemence. We stand with you and I'm proud of the fact that in Israel, this is the one place in the Middle East that the Christian community not only survives but thrives and it's no accident. It’s because of our commitment to religious freedom; it's because of our embrace of our heritage; it's because of our embrace of our common future.

Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January in the Gregorian Calendar. This date is observed by Orthodox Christians from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Greece, and a minority of Christians in African and Middle Eastern countries. This year, President Putin attended Christmas services at Yuriev Monastery, outside Novgorod. Every year, he attends a rural church of his choosing for this purpose. Meanwhile, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow held the official Orthodox Christmas ceremony at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, in Moscow.

Hundreds of Orthodox Christians gathered at Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow on Friday, to attend a midnight service led by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia. In line with the Julian calendar, Russian Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 6, 13 days after those using the Gregorian calendar.
The melee, which erupted around 1 p.m. EST, brought air traffic to a standstill at the heavily traveled airport.

The campaign -- which consisted of hacking Democratic groups and individuals, including Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, and releasing that information via third-party websites, including WikiLeaks -- amounted to what the intelligence report called "a significant escalation" in longtime Russian efforts to undermine "the US-led liberal democratic order."
The
report
was the first official, full and public accounting by the US intelligence community of its assessment of Russian cyberhacking activities during the 2016 campaign and the motivations behind that hacking.
"We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency. We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump," the report said.
"Russian efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election represent the most recent expression of Moscow's longstanding desire to undermine the US-led liberal democratic order, but these activities demonstrated a significant escalation in directness, level of activity, and scope of effort compared to previous operations," the report continued.
The report said Moscow used a variety of tactics in a bid to sway the outcome.
"Moscow's influence campaign followed a Russian messaging strategy that blends covert intelligence operations -- such as cyberactivity -- with overt efforts by Russian government agencies, state-funded media, third-party intermediaries and paid social media users or 'trolls,' " the report found.
The US intelligence community released several new pieces of information to support its conclusions.
It noted that in the final run-up to the election, when polls favored Clinton to win the election, Moscow shifted its campaign to influence the election to one aimed at undermining the validity of the electoral results.
"Before the election, Russian diplomats had already publicly denounced the US electoral process and were prepared to publicly call into question the validity of the results," the reported stated, adding that pro-Russian government bloggers had prepared a Twitter campaign on Election Night using the hashtag "#DemocracyRIP."
US intelligence officials also assessed "with high confidence" that the GRU Russian intelligence agency "used the Guccifer 2.0 persona, <a href="http://DCLeaks.com" rel="nofollow">DCLeaks.com</a>, and WikiLeaks to release US victim data obtained in cyberoperations publicly." The intelligence community also assessed "with high confidence" that the GRU provided WikiLeaks with the material they obtained from hacking the Democratic National Committee and top Democratic officials.
US intelligence agencies also noted in the report that the Russian influence campaign was not limited to the cyberhacking and release of private documents that drew headlines during the presidential campaign.
The report stated that the campaign blended cyberhacking intelligence operations with overt propaganda efforts carried out by state-owned media outlets and paid social media users.
The propaganda efforts included Russian state-owned media outlets like Russia Today and Sputnik casting Trump as "the target of unfair coverage from traditional US media outlets" as well as Russian propaganda officials casting Trump during the campaign as a victim of the US political establishment.
Meanwhile, the intelligence community noted that "RT's coverage of Secretary Clinton ... was consistently negative and focused on her leaked emails and accused her of corruption, poor physical and mental health, and ties to Islamic extremism."
Clinton's campaign first argued Russia was aiming to help Trump back in July, to which Trump's campaign called the comment "a joke." After the election, Clinton argued to donors that Putin got involved in the 2016 election partially due to a grudge against her, a view that's backed up in Friday's report.
"Putin most likely wanted to discredit Secretary Clinton because he has publicly blamed her since 2011 for inciting mass protests against his regime in late 2011 and early 2012, and because he holds a grudge for comments he almost certainly saw as disparaging him," the report said.
The Clinton campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday. But Jesse Lehrich, a spokesman for Clinton's campaign, expressed vindication Friday afternoon, tweeting:

Trump briefed
The report, which was commissioned by President Barack Obama, comes as Trump has continued to resist the US intelligence community's conclusions that Russia was responsible for the hacking and that it aimed to help his campaign.
Trump was briefed earlier Friday on the report by top US intelligence and law enforcement officials, and while he said he had "a constructive meeting," he declined to publicly agree with their conclusions.
Instead, Trump stressed that "there was absolutely no effect on the outcome whatsoever," which the US intelligence community asserted in its report it was not in a position to assess.
Trump did acknowledge in his statement the possibility that Russia could have been behind the hack, though he named China as well as a persistent cyberhacker.
The US intelligence community also warned in its report Friday that Moscow would likely continue to pursue cyberhacking campaigns to influence future elections.
"Moscow will apply lessons learned from its Putin-ordered campaign aimed at the US presidential election to future influence efforts worldwide, including against US allies and their election processes," it assessed.
The 17 US intelligence agencies first concluded in October that Russian intelligence, directed by the most senior Russian officials, orchestrated the hacking of Democratic Party organizations.
But since then, the US intelligence community said it had gathered additional information to make assessments of the motivations behind the cyberhacking operations: that the effort was aimed at undermining the US democratic process, hurting Clinton and helping Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Five people have been shot dead by a gunman at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, say officials.
It happened at the baggage claim area in Terminal 2, just before 1300 local time (1800 GMT), the airport confirmed.
Five people were killed, eight injured and one person was unharmed in custody, said police and local officials.
Hundreds of people were standing on the tarmac outside the terminal as dozens of police cars and ambulances rushed to the scene.
Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca wrote on Facebook that the gunman had arrived on a flight from Canada with a gun checked into his luggage.
"He claimed his bag and took the gun from baggage and went into the bathroom to load it. Came out shooting people in baggage claim", Mr LaMarca wrote.
One of the first reports of the incident came from former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, who said in a tweet: "I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running."
A witness told MSNBC that the gunman was a "slender man' who was wearing a Star Wars T-shirt.
The gunman, who appeared to be in his 20s, did not speak before or during the attack, John Schlicher said.
He added that his mother-in-law administered first aid to someone who had been shot in the head.
Florida Senator Bill Nelson told US media that the gunman has been identified as Esteban Santiago, but that has not been confirmed by law enforcement.
A man in handcuffs was seen being escorted away from the airport by police nearly two hours after the shooting was first reported.
Mobile phone footage from the scene showed police officers frisking passengers and uniformed Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers.
A Miami TV station tweeted footage claiming to be filmed from inside the baggage terminal.
The video shows several injured people laying on the floor, as witnesses shout for medical help.
The gunman was arrested without any shots fired, said Sheriff Scott Israel.
"People were scared and frantically running to avoid being shot. People were tripping over each other. They were trying to make a fast exit out of the door."
Florida Governor Rick Scott is travelling to the airport to be briefed by police.
Federal aviation authorities issued a "ground stop" notice, barring flights from leaving or entering the airport.
President-elect Donald Trump tweeted that he is "monitoring the terrible situation in Florida" and that he has spoken to the Florida governor.
"Thoughts and prayers for all. Stay safe!" he added.
Fort Lauderdale is a major tourist hub in the greater Miami area that typically sees an average of 80,000-100,000 passenger every day.
Nearby Miami International Airport announced that "extra security measures" have been put in place "out of an abundance of caution".

The heads of US intelligence agencies arrived at the White House early Thursday afternoon (local time) to comprehensively brief President Barack Obama on the Russian cyberattacks during the presidential election campaign. A classified report being presented to Obama is said to include proof of the cyberattacks. Among the senior officials who arrived at the White House were James Clapper, the director of national intelligence; Adm. Michael Rogers, head of the National Security Agency; Jeh Johnson, head of the Department of Homeland Security; and John Brennan, head of the CIA. The report is to be presented to President-elect Donald Trump on Friday.

President-elect Donald Trump will reportedly name former Indiana Senator Dan Coats to replace James Clapper as Director of National Intelligence. Coats would become the fifth in the line of senior policymakers who would presumably take a very different approach to Russia than the one articulated by the President-elect and by retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn during the campaign season. As I wrote earlier at Just Security, the other four are: Vice President-elect Mike Pence, retired General James N. Mattis, nominee for CIA Director, Rep. Mike Pompeo, Deputy National Security Advisor, KT McFarland (see my earlier post, KT McFarland’s Hardline on Russia with Nuance).
Among Coats’ claims to fame, he was banned from entering Russia in retaliation for his leadership in pursuing sanctions against Russia following its annexation of Crimea. “Putin’s recent aggression is unacceptable, and America must join with our European allies to isolate and punish Russia,” Coats remarked at the time. “I will continue to lead efforts on Capitol Hill to bring Putin to his senses.” Coats also criticized the White House sanction package against Putin as too limited, Coats told CNN, “It’s a baby step in the right direction … we need to do a lot more than this to get this bully in the playground stood up to by the United States.” Coats lauded the intelligence community’s information that Russia was “virtually assured” of being “complicit” in the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, which explained created a need for “crippling sanctions.” Finally, in an interview of the Steve Malzburg Show, Coats had these ominous words about the global intentions of Vladimir Putin:
“You would think Europe, given its history under the thumb of the Third Reich, would see that this history is starting to be repeated and . . . the earlier you address this, the earlier you stand up to it, the less consequences there will be in the future . . . We need to stop Putin before he goes any further.”
The selection of Coats adds another piece to the puzzle of how the Trump administration might pursue relations with Russia. For NATO allies, Coats offers some measure of reassurance about the commitments of the United States over the coming years. As Juliette Kayyem noted a few days ago, with Trump’s stance on the issue of Russian election hacking and the intelligence community, this will be “one heck of a confirmation hearing” to watch.
