Washington Free Beacon: Bill Maher on Comey Firing: A Lot of This Is Because of Bill Clinton
Sat, 13 May 2017 10:18:29 -0400
HBO's "Real Time" host Bill Maher on Friday blamed former President Bill Clinton for the fallout and eventual firing of now-former FBI director James Comey earlier this week.
Maher said that Comey made some missteps last fall by announcing that the FBI was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails 11 days before the presidential election. However, he acknowledged that Comey was still on the case and said that he wasn't a guy that you "could buy off with loyalty."
He then castigated liberals for being opposed to Comey over "purity" issues, which he said gave Republicans a talking point to show their hypocrisy after President Trump fired him.
Maher's partial defense of Comey received praise from hip-hop artist Michael Render, better known as Killer Mike, who called Comey a "Boy Scout."
"I thought that 11 days before the election was weird, but I felt like he [took] a fair shot at Hillary. I thought that the investigation into Trump was fair. I was actually impressed that he seemed to be in the middle figuring out, you know, the whole thing and I am glad to see that," Render said.
Later in the segment, Maher brought the conversation back to Comey where he said that "a lot of this is because of Bill Clinton."
"The reason why Comey had to say what he did is because the Attorney General had to recuse herself because he walked on her plane. Let's not forget that. Bill Clinton once again fucked up his wife's life," Maher said, drawing laughs from the panel and applause from the audience.
"If Bill Clinton hadn't walked on Loretta Lynch's plane, then she would have been making the statement instead of Comey," Maher continued. "Yes, he made a statement we don't like, but he was given an almost impossible situation."
"That's where we are. Bill Clinton. Let's put the blame where it belongs." Maher added.
Comey testified last week before the Senate Judiciary Committee that the airport tarmac meeting last June in Phoenix between Clinton and Lynch showed the Justice Department could not credibly investigate Clinton's email practices, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Comey was concerned with the meeting regardless of Lynch's defense, and said that he lived his whole life caring about the credibility and integrity of the criminal justice process.
"A number of things had gone on which I can't talk about yet, that made me worry that the department leadership could not credibly complete the investigation and decline prosecution without grievous damage to the American people's confidence in the justice system," Comey said.

US national security | The Guardian: Comey, chaos crisis? Trump enters new territory after most explosive week yet
Sat, 13 May 2017 10:15:50 -0400
Trumps decision to fire James Comey stunned Washington, upset the bureau, and gave fresh impetus to two investigations into Russias election meddling. It also raised the question: just how much more are Republicans willing to take?
Ill met by moonlight, a dozen reporters and cameramen peered into the darkness. Where was Sean Spicer? The press secretary had given a TV interview at 9pm then disappeared behind an awning, apparently conferring with colleagues. Journalists waited on the drive. The White House glowed behind them. This is so weird, one said. Its like hunting a dog and then killing it.
A couple of minutes later Spicer emerged on a path running along a fence and hedgerow. He was caught in a blinding light and asked the cameramen to turn it off. Relax, enjoy the night, have a glass of wine, he said jocularly. Spicer then spent 12 minutes trying to explain why Donald Trump had taken the most explosive decision of his young presidency: axing the director of the FBI.

Lebanon: Israel swamps phones, charges Nasrallah with Badreddine murder
Sat, 13 May 2017 10:09:26 -0400
May 13, 2017, 5:01 PM (IDT)Lebanon’s telecommunications agency, OGERO, said Saturday that Israel may have been responsible for the suspicious telephone calls thousands of citizens had received during Hassan Nasrallah’s memorial speech Thursday for Mustafa Badreddine, commander of Hizballah troops in Syria, who was assassinated a year ago in Damascus. While he was speaking, around 10,000 phones rang in different parts of Lebanon, OGERO reported. Planted there was a record stating “Hizballah's leader Nasrallah was responsible for Badreddine’s assassination.”
The Beirut agency reported that the phone network was hacked by a very advanced method form outside the country. Investigations revealed that they came from France, Italy, Syria, Iraq and other countries. The incoming telephone number was manipulated to appear as it if was being made from a Lebanese landline, said the state-owned OGERO. “We believe that the Israeli enemy is being these suspicious calls,”  DEBKAfile: Israel’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Gady Eisenkott reported in April that Hizballah had itself been responsible for the assassination of which Nasrallah accused Israel.

Will it happen?

North Korea is willing to engage in talks with the U.S. under the right conditions, a senior North Korean diplomat revealed Saturday.
Well have dialogue if the conditions are there, Choe Son Hui, head of U.S. affairs for the North Korean foreign ministry, told South Koreas Yonhap News Agency in Beijing. Choe had just concluded Track 1.5 discussions with former U.S. officials in Norway and was in the process of returning to Pyongyang at the time of the interview.
Choe did not specify what conditions would be needed for a dialogue with the Trump administration.
President Donald Trump told Bloomberg News earlier in May he would be willing to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
If it would be appropriate for me to meet with him, I would absolutely, I would be honored to do it, Trump said, adding that such a meeting could only occur under the right circumstances.
Most political people would never say that, Trump said, but Im telling you under the right circumstances I would meet with him. We have breaking news.
South Koreas new president has also indicated that he is open to talks with North Korea.
I will quickly move to solve the crisis in national security. I am willing to go anywhere for the peace of the Korean Peninsula if needed, I will fly immediately to Washington. I will go to Beijing and I will go to Tokyo, Moon said Wednesday, according to multiple reports. If the conditions shape up, I will go to Pyongyang.

The National Interest: A Frightening Fact the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Both Share (And Why Chinese Stealth Fighters Are in the Skies)
Sat, 13 May 2017 09:01:00 -0400
Dave Majumdar
Security,

Examples of advanced Chinese weapons that incorporate stolen American know-how include the Chengdu J-20 and Shenyang J-31 stealth fighters and electromagnetic catapult launch systems.

Russia and China will likely use their cyber-warfare and cyber-espionage capabilities to challenge the United States into the foreseeable future.
Both nations possess highly capable forces that can steal information or attack American infrastructure. Indeed, in some cases, highly classified data on some of the United States most advanced military hardwareincluding the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighters and Bell-Boeing V-22 Ospreyis in now in the hands of foreign adversaries as result of cyber-espionage.
Cyber threats are already challenging public trust and confidence in global institutions, governance, and norms, while imposing costs on the U.S. and global economies, reads congressional testimony from Daniel Coats, director of National Intelligence on May 11. Cyber threats also pose an increasing risk to public health, safety, and prosperity as cyber technologies are integrated with critical infrastructure in key sectors.
Russia remains the most capable adversary in cyber-space. Moscow has a highly advanced offensive cyber program, and in recent years, the Kremlin has assumed a more aggressive cyber posture, Coats stated. This aggressiveness was evident in Russias efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. election, and we assess that only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized the 2016 U.S. election-focused data thefts and disclosures, based on the scope and sensitivity of the targets.
The threat will only continue to grow as the Kremlin expands its capabilities. We assess that Russian cyber operations will continue to target the United States and its allies to gather intelligence, support Russian decision-making, conduct influence operations to support Russian military and political objectives, and prepare the cyber environment for future contingencies, Coats stated.

The National Interest: The P40: Italy's Killer World War II Tank You May Have Never Heard Of
Sat, 13 May 2017 08:41:00 -0400
Robert Beckhusen
Security, Europe

The P40 was formidable and the Germanswho were the primary usersliked the armor, which changed during the design phase to resemble the Soviet T-34/76. The P40s armor had similar thickness to that famous Soviet tank.

Italy was not renown in World War II for its tanks, which tended to be light and poorly used on the battlefield. But the Italian arms industry did produce interesting designs, some quite formidable.
The Carro Armato P26/40 was a rare example of an Italian medium tankthe Italian army referred to it as a heavy tank, as it was heavy in comparison to Italys other vehicles, but it was roughly similar to Americas M4 Sherman, the Soviet T-34 and the German Panzer IV medium tanks.
Manufacturer Fiat-Ansaldo began design work in 1940. However, production wouldnt begin in earnest until late 1943 after the Allies had already invaded Italy. The war in Italy then descended into a near-stalemate as German and fascist troops with the Italian Social Republica satellite regime which sprang up after Mussolini was deposedkept the Allied armies at bay. As a result, only around 100 P40s or so were produced.
The P40 was formidable and the Germanswho were the primary usersliked the armor, which changed during the design phase to resemble the Soviet T-34/76. The P40s armor had similar thickness to that famous Soviet tank.
Four crew members served inside the tank, with a driver and second crewmanoperating a radio and an eight-millimeter Breda 38 machine gunin the hull. The loader and the commander, who also operated the gun, sat in the turret, which was packed tight.
The 75-millimeter L/34 gun was adequate. German requirements conflicted with the 26-ton tanks diesel engine, so the Germans sought to re-equip them with gasoline-powered ones.
In some cases individual P40s lacked engines altogether, so the Axis removed their turrets and shipped them to the front lines as static anti-tank guns. The tank had no internal intercom system, which coupled with the confined space, made it an unpleasant vehicle to operate.
The P40s hull and turret were of riveted construction, not uncommon in World War II due to the ease and low cost to build, but already obsolete at that point in favor of welded hulls. Spalling, or flakes of shrapnel from an interior hull caused by a shell slamming into the exterior hull, posed a lethal threat to crews.
Rivets worsened the hazard, but Italy wasnt alone here. British tanks often used rivets as did early American ones. Its worth noting the T-34 had a welded, not riveted, hull.

The National Interest: Donald Trump Is His Own Worst Enemy
Sat, 13 May 2017 08:24:00 -0400
W. James Antle III
Politics,

"The past week is a reminder that President Trump has the same self-indulgentand self-destructivehabits Candidate Trump did, but with much higher stakes."

Toward the end of last years presidential campaign, Donald Trump tweaked his handlers advice as part of his stump speech.
Stay on point, Donald, stay on point, he would say. No sidetracks, Donald, nice and easy. After all, Trump was a candidate who tended to veer off script, sometimes stepping on his own momentum.
The past week is a reminder that President Trump has the same self-indulgentand self-destructivehabits Candidate Trump did, but with much higher stakes.
Things were looking up for the president. Trump finally got an Obamacare replacement bill out of the House, which could smooth the path for tax reform and other agenda items. He followed up the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch with several more conservative judicial nominations.
No, it wasnt the most successful first 100 days. But for all Trumps faults, he seemed to be building up a head of steam. His administration, now seemingly dominated by the professionals in its midst, was finally finding its footing.
Trumps abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey erased any progress he might have made in public perceptions. The president seemed genuinely taken aback that Democrats did not credit him for removing the law enforcement official they were just days ago blaming for Hillary Clintons defeat.
Dems have been complaining for months & months about Dir. Comey, Trump complained on Twitter. Now that he has been fired they PRETEND to be aggrieved. Phony hypocrites!
With that, the Twitter dam burst. Trump said that his Democratic critics, like Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, should be investigated instead. He denounced the fabricated story of collusion between his presidential campaign and Russian interlopers. He threatened to cancel daily briefings for the fake media and suggested he might have tapes with which he could retaliated if the deposed Comey kept leaking his side of the story to the press.
