ISS crew locks down inside Russian sector after cooling system glitch by The European Union Times
The threat of a possible toxic leak in the US sector of the ISS forced the American astronauts on board to isolate their module and move to the Russian sector. The hatch was reopened hours later after no leak was detected, NASA reported.
The decision to reopen the hatch was done after receiving data readings from a variety of sensors aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and carefully studying flight controllers throughout the day, all of which indicated “no leakage of ammonia on the station.”
NASA says the false alarm may have been caused by a “transient error message in one of the station’s computer relay systems, called a multiplexer-demultiplexer.”
After turning the relay box off and on again, the error message disappeared. Flight controllers have said the relay box is in good operating condition.
The European and two American astronauts returned to the US side at 20:05 GMT, NASA said.
NASA is continuing to analyze flight controller data in an effort to determine what triggered the alarm in the first place.
The incident, which occurred at about 09:00 GMT, prompted the six-member crew to put on emergency masks and rush to the Russian side of the orbital station to avoid potential poisoning from ammonia, which is used in the cooling and heating systems of the ISS.
“At this time the team does not believe we leaked ammonia,” ISS program manager Mike Suffredini said. “There was never any risk to the crew,” he added.
“The safety of the crew has been secured by prompt joint action by the US and Russian crewmembers, as well as by mission control staff in Moscow and Houston,” said the head of the Russian Mission Control Center, Maksim Matyushin.
The current crew of the International Space Station consists of six researchers representing two expeditions. Expedition 42 arrived on the ISS in September and consists of US astronaut Commander Barry Wilmore and Russian cosmonaut engineers Aleksandr Samokutyaev and Elena Serova – the first Russian female cosmonaut in 17 years.

ODESSA, Texas (AP) - A prison bus skidded off an icy Texas highway, slid down an embankment and collided with a passing freight train Wednesday, killing eight inmates and two corrections officers, including the bus driver, authorities said.
The overpass on Interstate 20 was slick with ice Wednesday morning when the Texas Department of Criminal Justice bus left the roadway in Penwell, just west of Odessa, according to Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson.
The prisoners, who did not have seat belts, were handcuffed together in pairs, officials said. Some of them were ejected from the bus after it struck the train, said Trooper Elizabeth Barney of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
An earlier accident on the I-20 overpass may have contributed to the prison bus losing control, Donaldson said.
"It's as bad as you can imagine," Odessa Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Kavin Tinney told the Odessa American newspaper. "In 32 years it's as bad as anything I've seen."
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirmed the 10 deaths in a statement, adding that four prisoners and one corrections officer were injured. Tiffany Harston, spokeswoman for Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, said four of the injured are in critical condition and one is in serious condition.
Jason Clark, a Department of Criminal Justice spokesman, said the bus was new and had been placed in service only this past summer. It was taking the inmates from the Middleton prison in Abilene to the Sanchez prison in El Paso, which is about 250 miles west of where the accident happened.
The prisoners did not have any leg restraints, said Jason Heaton, agency director for the region. Only the driver's seat had a seat belt, he said. Like many buses, the vehicle did not have seat belts on the bench-type seats where the prisoners were seated.
After the accident around 7:30 a.m., the white bus came to rest on its side, next to the railroad tracks, crumpled with heavy damage to its front and undercarriage. The top of the bus was caved inward.
The Union Pacific freight train with four locomotives and 58 cars came to a stop soon after. None of the cars derailed, but two containers at the rear of the train were damaged, said Mark Davis, a railroad spokesman.
The containers were carrying hundreds of parcels and packages, many of which were strewn along the tracks.
No Union Pacific employees were injured.
The train, which was traveling from the Los Angeles area to Marion, Arkansas, remained stopped at the accident site several hours after the accident, Davis said.
"We'll send crews to inspect the train, inspect the track," he said.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending its own team of inspectors to the scene.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued a statement offering condolences to the families of those killed in the wreck.
"I also pray for a speedy recovery of a third correctional staff member and four offenders who were transported with injuries," he said.
In June, an inmate was killed and several other people were injured when a Department of Criminal Justice van collided with a car in Central Texas.
Warren reported from Dallas. Associated Press writer Diana Heidgerd in Dallas also contributed to this report.

Members of a local news team are at odds over warning viewers about the threat "black ice" poses to their safety this winter.
- Black ice, sometimes called clear ice, refers to a thin coating of glazed ice on a surface. While not truly black, it is virtually transparent, allowing black asphalt/macadam roadways or the surface below to be seen through it—hence the term "black ice".

AUSTIN, Texas Wed Jan 14, 2015 1:53pm EST
AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas prison bus carrying 15 people skidded off an icy overpass and hit a moving freight train on Wednesday, leaving at least 10 people dead and five others injured, officials said.
Two correctional officers and eight inmates died from injuries sustained in the accident near the west Texas city of Odessa, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.
"It’s with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers," said Brad Livingston, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Four of the crash victims were in critical condition and the other was in serious condition, according to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
The bus was traveling from Abilene to El Paso with 12 inmates and three corrections officers aboard. It was transporting offenders from the Middleton Unit in Abilene, which houses male offenders and is not a high security unit.
The accident appeared to be weather related, a spokeswoman with the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
"It seems that there was an ice patch there on the overpass," said Sergeant Elizabeth Barney, who said the bus crashed into the moving train.
"It is a very horrific and tragic crash," Barney said.
Railroad company Union Pacific said the transport bus plunged from the elevated roadway and into one of its freight trains, causing damage to two cars. The two crew members aboard the train did not suffer serious injuries.
"Our sympathies go out to all the victims involved," spokesman Jeff DeGraff said.
The identities of those on the transport bus have not been released.

At least 10 people have been killed after a prison bus careened off an icy highway overpass inTexas, slid down an embankment and collided with a train, the Texas Department of Corrections announced.
Two corrections officers and eight inmates died in the crash, the Corrections Department said in a statement. The five other people on the bus -- four inmates and one corrections officer -- have been transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.
The bus was traveling from a unit in Abilene to El Paso at around 7:30 a.m. today when the accident occurred, Corrections Department Executive Director Brad Livingston said in the statement.
There was another accident at the top of the overpass that the bus tried to avoid, and in doing so, the bus may have hit black ice, Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson told ABC News.
After the collision, the bus was dragged for about 200 yards along the tracks before coming to a complete stop, causing a number of smaller accidents happened after the first collision.
"It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident," Livingston said. "Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers."
The investigation into the accident is ongoing and the National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to Odessa, Livingston said.
ABC News' Jim Scholz contributed to this report.

A Texas transport bus carrying prisoners between Abilene and El Paso skidded off an icy highway embankment Wednesday and tumbled onto a passing train below, killing 10 people, authorities said.
The dead included eight prisoners and two correctional officers, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said in a statement.
Five people were injured -- one staff member and four prisoners, according to the TDCJ, which operated the bus.
Four of the injured were in critical condition and one was in serious condition, the Odessa-Americanreports, quoting a spokesperson for the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
"It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers," said Brad Livingston, Executive Director of the TDCJ.
The accident occurred on an icy stretch of Interstate 20 near Penwell, west of Odessa, Wednesday morning, according to Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson.
Union Pacific spokesman Jeff DeGraff said no one was injured among the train crew, the Odessa-American reports.

At least 10 people were killed Wednesday when a bus carrying state prisoners skidded off an icy highway overpass in West Texas, slid down an embankment and collided with a passing train, a county sheriff said.
Details of the crash were not immediately clear. Emergency crews in the West Texas town of Penwell, which is 16 miles southwest of Odessa, reported the bus came to rest on its side, crumpled with heavy damage to its top and undercarriage. Reuters reported that the bus was carrying 12 inmates and three corrections officers and was headed to El Paso.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice identified those killed as eight prisoners and two corrections officers.

"It's as bad as you can imagine," Kavin Tinney, a battalion chief, told The Odessa American newspaper. "In 32, years it's as bad as anything I've ever seen."
Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson says the overpass on Interstate 20 was slick with ice Wednesday morning when the Texas Department of Criminal Justice bus left the roadway just west of Odessa.
"It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident," said Brad Livingston, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. "Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers."
The Union Pacific train was carrying freight and came to a stop shortly after being struck about 7:30 a.m. Two employees on the train were not injured. The newspaper reported that those injured are in critical condition.
State Rep. Tan Parker notified the Texas House of the accident and led a moment of silence.

US Retail Sales Drop by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)
U.S. retail sales declined in December, which worried investors and drove down stock prices on Wednesday. The Commerce Department says retail sales fell nine-tenths of a percent for the month. Economists watch retail sales closely because consumer demand drives most U.S. economic activity. Outside volatile areas like energy and autos, sales in the overall economy fell by a more modest four-tenths of a percent. Analysts say consumers are spending cautiously because wages are...

Intelligence officers allowed to testify in Northern Ireland abuse inquiry by Henry McDonald, Ireland correspondent
Officers with knowledge of Kincora abuse scandal will not be prosecuted under Official Secrets Act for giving evidence
Intelligence officers and police with knowledge of the Kincora child abuse scandal in Northern Ireland will not be prosecuted under the Official Secrets Act for giving evidence to the historical abuse inquiry, the attorney general for England and Wales has said.
Two former army intelligence officers, Colin Wallace and Brian Gemmel, have claimed they reported abuse at the east Belfast home, which was controlled by a prominent Orangeman and state agent, but were ignored by the authorities. They allege that instead of moving against paedophiles running the home, the security forces blackmailed the Orangeman William McGrath and others to spy on other hardline Ulster loyalists from the 1970s onwards.

Last week, researchers claimed to have developed a poker-playing computer program that is nearly unbeatable. What are the implications for the old debate about whether poker is a game of skill or luck?
As a spectator sport, poker traditionally isn’t the most engaging thing to watch. I realised this when I found myself in the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas a few years ago. I was there for a couple of days with a friend, and being a fan of poker, thought it would be fun to check out a high stakes game there. It wasn’t. Nothing happens – you see lots of people insist on wearing sunglasses in a windowless room, some cards and chips moving around a table, and occasionally someone being banished with a sullen look on their face, because they no longer have any chips in front of them at that particular time. Watching poker in real life is boring.
Despite that, televised poker enjoyed a huge rise in popularity in the early 2000s. Some people have argued that there are two reasons for this: table cameras, and ice hockey. In 1999, Channel 4 broadcast a programme called Late Night Poker that revolutionised the way in which viewers could engage with the game – by introducing under-the-table cameras so that viewers could see the cards. With this simple addition, poker suddenly became a gripping drama, where you could see the inner workings of the poker players’ minds with each and every bluff.

(PARIS) — Charlie Hebdo’s defiant new issue sold out before dawn around Paris on Wednesday, with scuffles at kiosks over dwindling copies of the paper fronting the Prophet Muhammad. In the city still shaken by the deaths of 17 people at the hands of Islamic extremists, a controversial comic who appeared to be praising the men was taken into custody.
The core of the irreverent newspaper’s staff perished a week ago when gunmen stormed its offices, killing 12. Those who survived put out the issue that appeared on newsstands Wednesday, working out of borrowed offices, with a print run of 3 million — more than 50 times the usual circulation.
The storming of the newspaper was the opening salvo of three days of terror and bloodshed in the Paris region, ending when security forces killed all three gunmen on Friday.
France’s government was preparing tougher anti-terrorism measures, and there were growing signs that authorities were ready to use current laws to their fullest extent. Wednesday’s detention of Dieudonne for defending terrorism followed a four-year prison sentence involving the same charge for a man in northern France who seemed to defend the attacks in a drunken rant while resisting arrest.
French police say as many as six members of a terrorist cell that carried out the Paris attacks may still be at large, including a man seen driving a car registered to the widow of one of the gunmen. The country has deployed 10,000 troops to protect sensitive sites, including Jewish schools and synagogues, mosques and travel hubs.
Dieudonne, who popularized an arm gesture that resembles a Nazi salute and who has been convicted repeatedly of racism and anti-Semitism, is no stranger to controversy. His provocative performances were banned last year but he has a core following among many of France’s disaffected young people.
His Facebook post, which was swiftly deleted, said he felt like “Charlie Coulibaly” — merging the names of Charlie Hebdo and Amedy Coulibaly, the gunman who seized a kosher market and killed four hostages, along with a policewoman.
Solidarity for Charlie Hebdo, although not uniform, was widespread in France and abroad.
On Wednesday, the new issue vanished from kiosks immediately. Some newsstand operators said they expected more copies to arrive on Thursday. One kiosk near the Champs Elysees, open at 6 a.m., was sold out by 6:05. Another, near Saint-Lazar, reported fisticuffs among customers.
“Distributing Charlie Hebdo, it warms my heart because we say to ourselves that he is still here, he’s never left,” said Jean-Baptiste Saidi, a van driver delivering copies well before dawn on Wednesday.
