Analysts: Arab Foreign Fighters Pose Greater Threat than Western Counterparts

Despite U.S. and European efforts to track some 3,000 Western nationals fighting alongside terrorist organizations, analysts warn that Arab nationals joining Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra in Iraq and Syria, and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), pose a far greater threat to Mideast stability. Lacking the strong intelligence-monitoring capabilities available in the West, countries such as Libya, Tunisia and Yemen have little accurate information on how many of their own nationals are returning from extremist battlefields. Yet their potential is incredibly destabilizing, says Jeremy Shapiro of the Washington-based Brookings Institution. "It is a much bigger threat than the threat to the West," he said, explaining that unlike the limited numbers of foreign fighters trying to create havoc in Europe, Arab foreign fighters are more numerous and more dangerous. "Just in terms of sheer numbers: there's 10 times as many foreign fighters from the Arab world as there are from the West, and these countries are politically unstable [and], in many cases, less capable of dealing with them. "This is not a question, as it is in the West, of just sort of finding a few individuals and disrupting a terrorist attack," he added. "This is a problem of people with a lot of experience in violence with a very strong political ideology being injected in large numbers into very vulnerable societies." According to Clint Watts, senior fellow at the Philadelphia-based Foreign Policy Research Institute, many returning Arab fighters drift to safe havens in eastern Libya, which has been in a state of mild chaos since the fall of late dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Citing growing concerns about Libya becoming a sanctuary from which Islamic State and AQIM militants could conduct attacks regionally, Watts says three other locations face significant risks. "The second one will probably be Lebanon, which has got a significant number of foreign fighters stretching through it as well as fighting that is spurred or inspired by the Islamic State, and/or Jabhat al Nusra, or Hezbollah," he said. "Then I think the third one is Jordan, who's got a heavy refugee issue that is also combined with having lots of foreign fighters go there, and a fourth will probably be Turkey." While Ankara recently curbed the flow of foreign fighters entering Syria, Watts says many remain in Turkey, including militants who are unable to return to their home countries. The Arab fighters who arrive in the thousands from Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan and Morocco, he says, are more likely to lend their experience to local insurgencies for longer term political gain. "They seek political power — [that] is ultimately what they are trying to do in their local environments in North Africa and the Middle East, and they are doing that through the initiation of an Islamic state," he said. "That's what their goal is when they return home, as opposed to the Europeans, [who] are more just committing violence on behalf of an ideological cause." Islamic State group sympathizers also are beginning to stake out a presence in Afghanistan, potentially widening the arc of violent destabilization, analysts say. Watts says despite the swift Western response to the recent attacks in France, so far there has been little willingness on the part of Western nations to step into nations like Libya, despite the presence of al-Qaida, Islamic State and hundreds, if not thousands, of foreign fighters.

Past Provides Backdrop to Dresden Anti-Islamization Marches

The bells of Dresden’s Frauenkirche ring out across the city’s central square, which is ringed by stunning baroque buildings glinting in the winter sun. Horse-and-carriage tours take tourists through the picturesque cobbled lanes. Dresden was destroyed in World War II; its beauty was restored after the German reunification. In the last few months, the city has become a political battleground. tens of thousands of Germans have gathered regularly to protest what they see as the Islamization of the West, but they display a range of other grievances as well. Monday's crowd for the march was the biggest yet — 25,000 people. These protests organized by the Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West, or PEGIDA, have blossomed because of a political vacuum, said professor Werner Patzelt of Dresden University. “It is consensus in German society never again to let fascism come back to Germany," he said. "We have a kind of representation gap in the right side of the political spectrum. And it is in this gap in which the PEGIDA movement and parties like Alternatif fur Deutschland [Alternative for Germany] have broken in." Alternative for Germany won close to 10 percent of the vote in Saxony state elections in August. Party officials have joined the marches. Local party chief Bernd Lommel said Dresden’s history partly explains PEGIDA’s origins. He said there are people who feel that unification did not benefit them. Others, he said, feel they have lost, and they're uncertain about their future. Yet city is prosperous But Dresden does not conform to the stereotype of an economically depressed city in the former East Germany that has turned to extreme politics. The city is relatively prosperous. Instead, some analysts trace Dresden’s polarized politics back to the war. In February 1945, American and British bombers dropped 4,000 tons of explosives on Dresden, destroying the city. Twenty-five thousand people were killed. The anniversary is still marked every year with protest marches through Dresden’s rebuilt center. The history shapes the worldview of many PEGIDA supporters, Patzelt said. “The argument runs basically like this: Dresden has been destroyed by Americans and English bombers. Americans have never stopped bombing around the world. Now they bomb in the Near East [Middle East]. They destroy states there. As a result, we have so many refugees,” he said. Patzelt said the Russian flags seen during PEGIDA marches indicate the desire among some for a counterweight to American power. The misunderstandings should not be simply dismissed, said local politician Jan Donhauser of the Christian Democrats, the party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “With PEGIDA, it’s not just about asylum policies. There are many other things that are making people unhappy, that draw them to movements like this. We have to recognize that, though I have to disagree with them, because we in the East have never had it this good. But still, as a politician," he added, “I have to take it seriously.” Wrong approach seen Merkel attended a pro-unity rally Tuesday in Berlin, organized by Muslim groups. She has strongly condemned the PEGIDA marchers, saying they have "hatred in their hearts."    Patzelt said that's the wrong approach. “Saying, ‘Well, we have to get rid of all these movements, we have to oppress giving voice to these feelings and opinions,' then you really augment or nourish these movements,” he said. Patzelt predicted that the PEGIDA movement eventually would be absorbed into a political group such as Alternative for Germany. For now, the marchers insist they will return next Monday — and every week — until their voices are heard.

Fired Bartender Charged With Threatening to Kill Boehner

A federal grand jury has indicted an Ohio bartender for allegedly threatening to kill Republican House Speaker John Boehner by poisoning his drink at a country club. The suspect, Michael Hoyt of Cincinnati, was being evaluated for possible mental illness. His indictment, made public Tuesday, alleges that Hoyt, who was fired from his bartender's job in October, telephoned police and blamed Boehner for his problems. Hoyt allegedly told a policeman that he left the club before he had time to put "something" in Boehner's drink. He also allegedly told the officer that he was Jesus Christ and that Boehner was mean to him and was responsible for Ebola. According to the indictment, Hoyt said he had a loaded gun in his car that he would use to kill the speaker. Hoyt volunteered to go to a psychiatric hospital. The FBI and U.S. Capitol Police said they thought he was still a threat to Boehner. A spokesman for Boehner said the congressman was aware of the case and thanked Capitol Police and the FBI for their action.

Both US, France Face Immigration Challenges

The terrorist attacks in France have focused new attention on that nation’s Muslim immigrant communities, from which the alleged killers emerged. French leaders have called for unity, noting that the radicals represent a small minority within the Muslim population. But French conservatives say the influx of immigrants from Africa and the Middle East has provided violent extremists a base on French soil. A different sort of divide over immigration exists in the U.S. VOA’s Greg Flakus reports.

Life on the frontline of the Ukraine conflict

More than half a million people have been displaced by fighting between government forces and Russia-backed separatists. Residents of Donetsk and Luhansk tell RFE/RL what life is like for those left behind
Luhansk used to be poetically called ‘the city of fountains and roses’. Now it is the city of downcast faces. Sad, downcast, emaciated. And very tired – tired of having no money, mass unemployment, poverty and damaged homes, constant problems with electricity, water, heating, and telephones. But most of all, tired from the loss of hope.
A smile in Luhansk has become a rare thing, like a dandelion in winter
Many Luhansk residents who were formerly quite chatty have turned to silence
When they prepare for war, people often fail to realise that they will run out of water, not of food
I would sit on the balcony in the evening, under the starry sky in a city without lights, without noise, and I would listen to Chinese music
In view of the project’s complete economic failure, residents of the Donetsk region, even those who voted for the DNR, are starting to doubt
People almost murdered each other queuing up for humanitarian parcels
It has unfortunately become fashionable to consider that all those who stayed back in the rebel-controlled territories are pro-Russian morons
No, let’s be honest, not all of us supported the Maidan protests
Sooner or later, the occupied parts of Donbas will return into Ukraine’s fold. We have absolutely no doubt about that

Feeling Good - Nina Simone (1965) - YouTube

Uploaded on Oct 20, 2010
"Feeling Good" (also known as "Feelin' Good") is a song written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the 1964 musical "The Roar Of The Greasepaint—The Smell Of The Crowd" and has since been recorded by many artists, including Muse, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darin, Traffic, Michael Bublé, The Pussycat Dolls, George Michael, John Barrowman, John Coltrane, Toše Proeski, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Adam Lambert. Perhaps the most famous version was recorded by Nina Simone, and first appeared on her 1965 album "I Put A Spell On You". Simone's version is also featured in the 1993 film "Point Of No Return", in which the protagonist uses the code name 'Nina' and professes to be a longtime fan of Simone's music. At least half the soundtrack for the film featured Nina Simone songs. The song was also featured in the promotional video of the TV series "Six Feet Under" (4th season), and is included in the show's volume 2 soundtrack. Additionally, Simone's version is also included in the 2006 film, "Last Holiday", in the 2010 film "Repo Men", appears as a background track in the 2009 game "The Saboteur" (despite the game taking place in Nazi-occupied Paris, long before the song was made), and is featured in the television series "Chuck" during the third season episode "Chuck Versus The Honeymooners". Eunice Kathleen Waymon (February 21, 1933 -- April 21, 2003), better known by her stage name Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. Although she disliked being categorized, Simone is most associated with jazz music. Simone originally aspired to become a classical pianist, but her recorded work covers an eclectic variety of musical styles that include classical, jazz, blues, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Her vocal style is characterized by intense passion, a loose vibrato, and a slightly androgynous timbre, in part due to her unusually low vocal range which veered between the alto and tenor ranges, occasionally even reaching baritone lows. Also known as 'The High Priestess Of Soul', she paid great attention to the musical expression of emotions. Within one album or concert she could fluctuate between exuberant happiness and tragic melancholy. These fluctuations also characterized her own personality and personal life, amplified by bipolar disorder with which she was diagnosed in the mid-1960s, something not widely known until after her death in 2003, though she wrote of it openly in her autobiography published in 1992. According to Nadine Cohodas, Simone's biographer, Ms. Simone was first diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and later with schizophrenia. Simone recorded over 40 live and studio albums, the greatest body of her work released between 1958, when she made her debut with "Little Girl Blue", and 1974. Her music and message made a strong and lasting impact on musical culture, illustrated by the numerous contemporary artists who cite her as an important influence. Several hip-hop musicians and other modern artists sample and remix Simone's rhythms and beats on their tracks. Many of her songs are featured on motion picture soundtracks, as well as in video games, commercials, and TV series. This channel is dedicated to the classic jazz music you've loved for years.
