A Stanford Medical School Student Was Arrested for Poisoning Her Classmates' Water Bottles | VICE

One day in October 2014, a graduate student researcher at Stanford University's Nusse Lab took a drink from her water bottle. According to testimony she later gave to police, the student "immediately experienced a burning sensation in her mouth and throat. Her eyes became irritated and watery. She began salivating uncontrollably. Her throat was burning so bad that she could not even swallow the water."
When she smelled her water bottle, it reeked of paraformaldehyde.
This wasn't the first time a member of the lab had accidentally ingested the toxic chemical. For weeks, researchers in the lab had been sniffing their water bottles before drinking, and multiple times each week, the bottles smelled strongly of paraformaldehyde. But none of the students suspected that they were being intentionally poisoned by the "awkward and quiet" second-year Stanford Medical School student in the lab, Zheng,* who is now being charged with four felony counts of poisoning. (The Fountain Hopper, an anonymous publication that made waves earlier this year by alerting students to their rights to request their admissions files under FERPA, discovered the case after receiving a tip from a member of the lab on March 19.)
In her account to police, Zheng described her actions as a cry for help: "I am truly sorry for what had happened, but I really didn't mean to harm people. And I... it was me crying out for help and I didn't know."
Zheng had seemed insecure and very stressed, but her behavior didn't come across as abnormal to her peers, just par for the course at one of the most competitive medical schools in the world. The 26-year-old scientist had come to Stanford's Cancer Biology program from the prestigious Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A-STAR) program in Singapore. As one of her colleagues would testify later, Zheng described Stanford as "a paradise."
It's not hard to see why. Stanford pays meticulous attention to appearances: The sides of campus streets are regularly scrubbed with soapy water, the grass stays absurdly green throughout drought season, and when students struggle, as Zheng apparently did, they tend to do so quietly. The term"Stanford Duck Syndrome" is widely used on campus to describe the way students appear happy and calm above water, while desperately kicking beneath the surface just to stay afloat. Conversations about young people's mental health have become more urgent on campuses across the country in recent years, Stanford's among them. In January, a Stanford senior committed suicide; anotheroverdosed on graduation day last spring, immediately after the keynote speech by Bill and Melinda Gates.
Continued below.
On a campus where graduate students are often referred to as "sketchy grad students," it's unlikely that Zheng stuck out. No one reported her behavior as having been erratic, odd, or out of character. But while no victims or peers reported any animosity towards or from Zheng, victims said that they did not—and "never had any desire to"—spend time with her outside of the lab. She was described to investigators by her victims and peers as "very shy and quiet," "very reserved," "unsure of herself," "awkward," and "strange." According to one victim, Zheng once mentioned that she "had never had a boyfriend, and envied those who had." And while she was seen by older researchers as being "not very confident" in her lab work, Zheng's stressed-out, quiet vibe was pretty much standard at a medical school with an acceptance rate of 2.4 percent, the third-lowest in the country.
Zheng, who had sought psychological care from the university before the poisoning incident, told the Stanford Department of Public Safety that she had been suffering from severe insomnia, dizziness, depression, and "a disconnection from reality" at the time of the poisonings.
She added that she was not conscious of specifically choosing which water bottles to taint. But despite the presence of men and caucasian women in the lab, all of her victims were Asian women—and when one victim threw her water bottle out, Zheng noted that it was missing and asked her why.
Another researcher's mouse stem cell samples had "started to mysteriously die" with "no obvious cause." After successfully cultivating them, the researcher would return to find her cells dead the next morning. "The manner in which they died was very strange," she later told Stanford Public Safety Officer Mike Kim. "The cells detached and floated up dead." After several weeks, the researcher began to suspect she was being targeted. She intentionally mislabeled half of her samples; those labeled correctly with her name died, while the others were spared. The researcher then alerted her supervisor, director of faculty relations Ellen Waxman at Stanford Medical School, who chose to deal with the matter internally. (As of publication, Waxman had not replied to VICE's request for comment.)
When another student came forward with accounts of severe burning in her throat, the University decided it was time to get campus police involved.

On November 11, Zheng was "5150'd"—placed in an involuntary psychiatric hold, in her case by Stanford's Vaden Health Center. She was then held overnight at Fremont Hospital. Around 6:30 in the morning, Zheng called one of Stanford's graduate resident deans, asking why she was being 5150'd when she had readily agreed to be treated. A couple hours later, she called the same dean again, "begging" to be allowed to stay in school, according to court documents. During that same phone call, she confessed to having put substances in her labmates' water bottles, though she did not specify which one. The dean testified that "she stated that she had done bad things but 'not consciously.'"
Zheng allegedly told the dean "I was not myself" and "I didn't mean to hurt anyone." When asked if she was referring to the water bottles and tainted lab samples, Zheng replied, "Yes, but I did not know what I was doing and I did not want to hurt anyone."
Even so, on November 15, Zheng was arrested and charged with the four felonies. The Stanford student body was not informed—according to the University, no campus alert was sent because the suspect was not on campus and posed no threat to the community.
Zheng confessed almost immediately after police begin questioning her, describing her actions as "something like sleep walking." As the police report reads, "At the time, she was psychologically unstable, depressed, stressed and very dizzy. Sometimes the dizziness caused her not to be fully conscious of what she was doing." According to the Fountain Hopper, Zheng's attorney has said that she is currently out on $50,000 bail, awaiting psychiatric evaluation and a May court date.
During her confession, Zheng told investigators that she "should have gone to the doctor and got treated" but instead "she just kept it within her."
Stanford's primary mental health facility is CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services); students are offered an unspecified number of visits with CAPS psychologists before being referred to outside doctors. Zheng stated in her testimony that she saw a psychologist three or four times before being referred to a psychiatrist, who prescribed her antidepressants.
The antidepressants apparently caused Zheng to have horrible headaches, and she eventually stopped taking the pills. During her confession, Zheng told investigators that she "should have gone to the doctor and got treated" but instead "she just kept it within her."
The school's mental health culture has recently become a hot-button topic on campus, after student journalists at the Stanford Review reported that in the wake of January's student suicide, those who sought counseling from CAPS faced a two-day wait period before a preliminary "screening call" could be conducted. (Stanford declined to comment on all questions regarding mental health services at the university.)

Zheng's attorney has indicated in court documents that she may plead not guilty by reason of insanity, which can be a tricky defense to mount—in order for it to work, a lawyer must convince the jury that, due to a mental defect or disorder, their client "was incapable of knowing or understanding the nature and quality of his or her act and of distinguishing right from wrong at the time of the commission of the offense."
"The overwhelming majority [of insanity defenses] fail, because prosecutors and juries want to hold people responsible to their conduct," says Charles Sevilla, the defense attorney in People vs. Skinner, a 1985 case that helped restore a narrow version of California's "right/wrong" insanity test after it had been broadened by a Supreme Court ruling. "Insane people create great fears in the public. The idea of finding a person who has committed terrible, violent acts 'not guilty by reason of insanity' is a disturbing prospect to many people."
Despite seeking treatment for her psychological issues in the past and describing herself as "disassociating" during the poisoning incidents, it's hard to see the insanity defense sticking for Zheng. When asked if she thought that putting chemicals in someone else's water bottle was OK, Zheng told investigators, "I know that it's wrong."
Clarification (4/2/15): Zheng was a PhD student in Cancer Biology at the Stanford School of Medicine. She was not an MD student.
*We have chosen to use a pseudonym for the suspect out of respect for the privacy of all involved. The victims of this case requested that their names not be released, citing concerns for their families and their careers.

Stanford graduate student accused of poisoning lab mates | News

A Stanford University graduate medical student faces charges of poisoning her fellow lab mates in a series of incidents that occurred in September 2014, according to court documents filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
The 26-year-old student was arrested on November 11, 2014, and is charged with four felonies after allegedly spiking her lab mates' water with paraformaldehyde in the Stanford School of Medicine lab.
The graduate student, who no longer attends Stanford, had been working in the lab for three years. She was a Singapore National Science Scholar at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, according to online government reports.
But she appeared to be under duress while at Stanford and was unsure of herself, witnesses in the lab told police. Described as quiet, shy, meticulous and a good student, she once expressed that she was stressed out, according to a police report.
The incidents began in late August or early September. A lab colleague drinking from a water bottle she had left on her desk experienced immediate burning to her throat and mouth. She then noticed the water smelled like paraformaldehyde, which is readily available in the lab. She rinsed out her mouth and the bottle, according to the police report.
After that incident, the colleague began smelling her water bottle before drinking. The bottle smelled like paraformaldehyde about four times a week for the next two to three months, she told police. She did not suspect anyone was tampering with her water bottle, but she eventually threw it away, according to the police report.
After the additional incidents, which other colleagues in the lab confirmed smelled like paraformaldehyde, the first victim preserved a small amount of the water in a vial. The presence of 884 parts per million of paraformaldehyde in the preserved water was later confirmed by a laboratory's testing, according to police.
A second lab colleague also experienced multiple incidents during September or October, in which her water bottle appeared to have been tainted with paraformaldehyde, according to the police report. This second colleague felt a burning sensation in her throat after drinking from her water bottle. She began to salivate uncontrollably and felt her esophagus contracting, according to the report.
During a second incident on Nov. 6, she took a big swig from her water bottle and had the same reaction. The experience was 10 times worse than before, she said. She also discarded her water bottle, according to police.
Paraformaldehyde can cause a host of maladies. It causes stomach irritation and papillomas in rats and mice when ingested and it can cause skin irritation in humans, but it is not known to be carcinogenic in humans when ingested, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Prolonged ingestion may affect the kidneys and cause gene mutations.
The two victims had their blood drawn at a student clinic to test for abnormalities, police noted. The water bottle of a third colleague was later tested and found to contain paraformaldehyde, according to the report.
The student was also accused of sabotaging a fourth colleague's research. In mid-August, stem cells the colleague had successfully grown started to mysteriously die overnight.
The colleague moved her cell plates to another lab and another incubator where they successfully grew for a time but then also mysteriously died. At one point, she discovered the accused student standing in front of her incubator with the door open. The colleague also discovered an open bottle of Trypsin, an enzyme that causes cells to detach and float up, on the incubator hood where the suspected student was allegedly standing, she told police.
To determine if she was being deliberately targeted, the colleague mislabeled some of her cell plates in her incubator and left others with her name on them. All of the experiments with her name on them died while the others did not. The colleague then reported the incident to the head of the lab. Video footage later obtained also placed the accused student in the lab where she was doing no work, according to the police report.
Another colleague told police that a 100-milliliter bottle of paraformaldehyde on her desk should have had 90 milliliters remaining. But after the alleged tainting incident with the first victim, she noticed the bottle was nearly empty.
The student allegedly admitted to tainting the water bottles and to destroying her lab mate's stem cells. Prior to adding paraformaldehyde to the bottles, she had started putting dish-washing liquid in her own water at home and drinking it. She progressed to spiking her water with random chemicals she found at the lab, she told police.
The student said she did not have animosity toward her colleagues, and there was not a sense of competition as their projects did not overlap. She had insomnia and dizziness and felt a disconnection from reality starting in September, she told police.
The thought of her colleagues drinking the tainted water was "terrifying," she said, but she never checked on their welfare nor warned them. She was crying out for help, she told police, and she was sorry that things went so far, she said. The student was under the treatment of a psychiatrist and was being treated with antidepressants, She checked herself into the hospital after the investigation began and remained on a psychiatric hold.
Adding the chemical was a matter of opportunity -- that the water bottles were evident on desks -- and was not a matter of targeting individuals, she said. She also admitted to putting Trypsin into her own cell experiments as well as the colleague's, police noted.
Palo Alto Online and Palo Alto Weekly learned of the arrest in December but held the story at the request of the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. The DA was concerned about the mental state of the student. The DA's office no longer has concerns about its publication.
University officials asked that the name of the lab and the persons involved not be published due to privacy considerations for the victims.
"This was a very sad, heartbreaking and unfortunate circumstance for everyone concerned. The university has been providing support to the students involved, who have asked since the outset that their privacy be respected," Lisa Lapin, associate vice president of university communications, said in an email.
When the concerns were first brought to the university's attention in November, Stanford police launched an immediate investigation, as did the university. Police referred their findings to the Santa Clara District Attorney, Lapin said. An arrest was made as soon as the suspect was available to be arrested.
"This was an isolated incident, and there was at no time a threat to the campus community," she said.
Privacy laws -- the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) -- limit what the university can share, Lapin said.
The student's attorney may pursue an insanity defense. She is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County Superior Court on May 15.

A 19-year-old Stanford University student has been arrested and charged with sexual assault connected to a disturbing incident that happened in the early morning hours of January 18, on the university campus,
according to KRON4
. Brock Turner, a star on the swim team originally from Ohio, was apprehended in a citizen's arrest situation after two passing cyclists witnessed him assaulting an unconscious woman he apparently met at a party. Though he tried to get away, the two people detained him until campus police could arrive, and details from a subsequent investigation by campus police have now been turned over to the Santa Clara County DA's office.
Turner was arrested and released on $150,000 bail, and has voluntarily withdrawn from school. He is not permitted back on campus.
The alleged victim in the case is not a Stanford student, but had come to the campus for a party, as the LA Times reports. The incident apparently occurred just outside that party.
As the Mercury News adds, Turner is charged with five felony counts: one count of rape of an intoxicated person, one count of rape of an unconscious person, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object of an intoxicated woman, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object of an unconscious woman, and one count of assault with intent to commit rape.
The incident comes as on-campus sexual assaults are receiving increased national coverage, and just three months after three separate assaults were reported and publicized at UC Berkeley.

Former Stanford PhD Student Arrested For Poisoning Peers: SFist

A former Stanford University med student PhD student working within the School of Medicine has been charged with four felony counts for allegedly poisoning fellow students last fall. Vice reportedthe story following a tip from a member of the student's lab to Fountain Hopper, an anonymous Stanford website that's been in the news for alerting students of their right to request admissions files from institutions.
Authorities allege that the 26-year-old female student who had arrived at Stanford after studies in Singapore put paraformaldehyde in classmates' water bottles. Peers reportedly smelled the substance on bottles "for weeks," with at least two of them experiencing burning and negative reactions. Fortunately, it sounds as if none experienced lasting injury. All of the victims, like the student, are Asian women.
Though the accused student has admitted to interfering with research samples — another researcher's mouse stem cell samples "started to mysteriously die" — and confessed to the poisoning almost immediately, she claimed to be “not conscious” of her actions. According to her attorney, she is currently out on $50,000 bail and awaiting psychiatric evaluation followed by a May court date. Court documents suggest she could plead insanity. Previously, she had sought psychological care from the university, telling the Stanford Department of Public Safety that she had been suffering from conditions like severe insomnia, dizziness, depression, and "a disconnection from reality." She did, per her testimony, see a psychologist three or four times before being referred to a psychiatrist who prescribed her antidepressants which she stopped taking due to headaches.
"I am truly sorry for what had happened, but I really didn't mean to harm people," the accused reportedly described her actions to police, "And I... it was me crying out for help and I didn't know." By peers, she's been described as "very shy and quiet," "very reserved," "unsure of herself," and "strange." In offering her confession, the student told investigators that she "should have gone to the doctor and got treated" but instead "she just kept it within her."

Singaporean student accused of poisoning Stanford University classmates

A Singaporean student on a scholarship at Stanford University has been accused of poisoning her classmates.
Ouyang Xiangyu, 27, a biochemistry graduate student on a prestigious Singapore scholarship, faces four charges of poisoning the drinking water of her fellow students with paraformaldehyde, a chemical used to preserve tissue samples that was readily available in the laboratory, between September and November last year.
She is currently on US$50,000 (HK$387,688) bail and restricted from leaving the country.
In court papers seen by the South China Morning Post, Ouyang’s defence lawyer indicated her client would plead not guilty by reason of insanity, pending an evaluation of her mental state.
Ouyang, originally from China according to the Straits Times, had twice received National Science scholarships from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), one of the Singapore’s most prestigious scholarships for science students. This allowed her to study at undergraduate level at Imperial College in London and join the renowned Nusse stem cell cancer research laboratory in Stanford University for her PHD programme.
Among five victims identified by the court document, two female graduate student researchers working in the same lab as Ouyang are also originally from China. They had experienced immediate burning in their throats and mouths as a result of drinking the water, the documents said.
Ouyang was arrested last November. When questioned by police, she claimed she had suffered severe insomnia and dizziness, and insisted she didn't mean to harm anyone.
“I wasn’t very clear about why I was doing it and what exactly I was doing,” she was cited as saying.
A*STAR told The Straits Times that it has acknowledged the incident, and was cited saying: “There will be no action on our part until after the proceedings have concluded.”
In 2013 a graduate medical student of distinguished Fudan University in Shanghai, China, fatally poisoned his roommate by placing toxic chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine into the dormitory’s water cooler, in what he said was an April Fool’s joke. The student was later sentenced to death.
And in the famous unsolved poisoning case in 1995, a student of Beijing’s prominent Tsinghua University was found poisoned with large dose of thallium over a period of time. The victim suffered serious neurological damage and permanent physical impairment. Police launched an investigation but were unable to solve the case.
