How Russian trolls are recruited, trained and deployed

Russian internet trolls
2015/01/30 • Russia

Wikipedia defines a troll as Internet slang for “a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community… with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.”
In the wake of the Crimean Anschluss, Moscow has deployed trolls against Ukraine, and Ukrainian news outlets have published long lists of people and sites they say feature the activity of pro-Putin trolls.
But there have been very few articles which consider Russian trolling from the inside, from the perspective of those Moscow is using for this purpose. An article on Sobaka.ru today in which someone who says she was recruited, trained and used as a troll against Ukraine provides an unusual glimpse into that world.
The site says that “Petersburg is glorified across all of Russia as the cradle of information wars and ‘Internet trolls,’ which took shape in an elite living complex in Olgino and later shifted closer to the center of the city.” Speaking on condition of anonymity, a former troll describes her life in its employ and why she didn’t last long in that capacity.
Many people who become trolls are attracted by ads that promise high pay but provide few details on what anyone hired would do. Those who apply, she says, are interviewed about their past employment and then asked to “’rewrite’” some real news story. One had the sense, she continues, that the group would hire anyone who could write and speak Russian.
And those who had been looking for a good job with high pay almost always said yes when told that they would begin at 45,000 rubles (750 US dollars) a month, she says, noting that no one asked any questions about their “personal political convictions” before they were offered a position.
On the first working day, which extended from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, the former troll says, she and her colleagues were asked to come up with 20 news stories of which about 75 percent of the content was to be real and the rest invented. The office reminded her of a school, she says, one in which one would be fined for being late and required to leave promptly at the end.
The trolls were identified as employees of the Federal News Agency, and they put up most of their stories on Ukrainian sites, including ones like the Kharkov News Agency at nahnews.com.ua. Ostensibly in Ukraine, all those posting on it were based in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The anonymous former troll says she had the sense that she was part of “some kind of social experiment or reality show,” especially since the 20 or 30 trolls in her office at the time were constantly monitored by television cameras. Managers gave relatively little guidance except the obvious: no one was to criticize Putin and the separatists were to be called militants.
Her fellow trolls, she continues, were mostly young people from other cities with higher education and not stupid. Some were quite informal with piercings and the like. She divides them into three categories: those who had no real idea what they were doing, those who would do anything for money, and those who bought into the line. There were very few of the last.
The former troll says that her bosses were concerned only about boosting the number of visitors to the sites where she and the others operated. That led them to include stories about murders, rapes, crime, show business, and gays because those stories could be counted on to attract more attention than others.
It took her a long time to decide to stop trolling, she says, because the pay was so good and she feared she could not get another job with as high an income. But the job made her nervous and many of her friends oppose the Putin regime. Finally, “at a certain moment,” she says, she “understood that [she] was ashamed of saying what [she] was involved with.”

Russian cyber attackers used two unknown flaws: security company

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A widely reported Russian cyber-spying campaign against diplomatic targets in the United States and elsewhere has been using two previously unknown flaws in software to penetrate target machines, a security company investigating the matter said on Saturday.

FireEye Inc (FEYE.O), a prominent U.S. security company, said the espionage effort took advantage of holes in Adobe Systems Inc’s (ADBE.O) Flash software for viewing active content and MicrosoftCorp's (MSFT.O) ubiquitous Windows operating system.

The campaign has been tied by other firms to a serious breach at U.S. State Department computers. The same hackers are also believed to have broken into White House machines containing unclassified but sensitive information such as the president’s travel schedule.

FireEye has been assisting the agencies probing those attacks, but it said it could not comment on whether the spies are the same ones who penetrated the White House because that would be classified as secret.

FireEye said that Adobe had issued a fix for the security weakness on Tuesday, so that users with the most current versions should be protected. The Microsoft problem by itself is less dangerous, since it involves enhanced powers on a computer from those of an ordinary user.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company was working on a patch.

In October, FireEye said the group it calls APT28 had been at work since 2007 and had targeted U.S. defense attaches and military contractors, NATO alliance offices, and government officials in Georgia and other countries of special interest to the Kremlin.

Days before that report, security firm Trend Micro Inc (4704.T) described a campaign it called "Pawn Storm" against computers in the State Department, Russian dissidents, NATO and other Eastern European nations. Because Pawn Storm and APT28 used some of the same tools and hit the same targets, other information security professionals concluded they were the same hackers.

On Thursday, Trend Micro said that the Pawn Storm hackers had increased their activity recently and had targeted bloggers who had interviewed President Barack Obama. It also said the group had “probably” stolen online credentials of a military correspondent at an unnamed major U.S. newspaper.

Though the security flaws APT28 used are new, it had been well established that the group was highly skilled. Saturday’s report is one in a flurry generated by rival firms ahead of the RSA Conference next week in San Francisco, the largest annual technology security gathering in the country.

Putin says ready to work with United States: TV

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has key interests in common with the United States and needs to work with it on a common agenda, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday in a television interview.

In his comments to the state-run Rossiya channel, Putin appeared to soften his anti-American rhetoric after being highly critical. Relations between Moscow and Washington and other Western powers have soured over the conflict in Russia's neighbor Ukraine, sinking to an all-time low.

"We have disagreements on several issues on the international agenda. But at the same time there is something that unites us, that forces us to work together," Putin said.

"I mean general efforts directed at making the world economy more democratic, measured and balanced, so that the world order is more democratic. We have a common agenda."

Putin has in the past fiercely attacked the United States and the West in general, blaming them for the Ukraine crisis, which Russia says was the result of a Western-backed "coup" against Ukraine's former leader Viktor Yanukovich.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations from Kiev and the West that it is supporting pro-Russian rebels with troops and weapons in eastern Ukraine, where more than 6,000 people have been killed since last April.

His latest remark comes two days after an annual TV phone-in show in which Putin accused the United States of trying to dominate world affairs, saying it wanted "not allies, but vassals". However, his criticisms of the West were more moderate than in some previous appearances.

However, both Russia and the West say they back a peace deal agreed in Minsk in February, as a result of which a ceasefire in the Donbass region is largely holding.

Afghan President Blames Suicide Bombing on ISIS — The Atlantic

A suicide bombing in Jalalabad, blamed on the Islamic State, shows that the country's terrorist problem is worsening.
In the ten months since its stunning capture of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, the Islamic State has expanded its reach beyond its geographic base, establishing a foothold in countries such as Libya. A vicious suicide attack in Afghanistan now raises fear that the war-torn country may be next. On Saturday, an unidentified man detonated explosives inside a crowded bank in Jalalabad, a city located near the country's border with Pakistan, killing 33 and injuring over 100. The number of the dead, who were all civilians, is expected to rise.
Appearing on national television after the attack, Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani claimed that a local affiliate of the Islamic State, also referred to by its Arabic acronym Daesh, was responsible.
"Taliban did not claim responsibility, but Daesh claimed responsibility," he said.
The involvement of ISIS has not been independently confirmed. But if Ghani is correct, Saturday's attack is an ominous development in a country struggling to combat a brutal insurgency from the Taliban, an indigenous Afghani group recently strengthened by an influx of foreign fighters.
On Saturday, a Taliban spokesman denied responsibility for the attack. But the group remains a lethal presence in Afghanistan. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Taliban violenceclaimed the lives of over 8,600 civilians in 2013 alone, and the group threatens government control of an estimated 40 percent of the country's 373 districts. A military crackdown on Islamic extremism in Pakistan has caused militants to cross the border into Afghanistan, where they have found refuge with the Taliban. With the onset of spring—the traditional fighting season in Afghanistan—extremist violence will only intensify.
"Considering the influx of foreign fighters in Afghanistan, this fighting season will be the bloodiest fighting season," Atiqullah Amarkhel, a military analyst in Kabul, told the Washington Post.
Afghanistan's violence poses a significant problem for the Obama Administration, which seeks to wind down American involvement in the country. In March, Ghani persuaded Obama to maintain around 10,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan through the end of 2015—double the number that Obama had planned. Additional revisions to Obama's plan appear likely.
"We need to re-examine the pace and scope of the drawdown, in light of what we're going to need in the future," Michèle Flournoy, former undersecretary of Defense for policy, said earlier this year.
Despite the presence of international troops, Afghanistan's future nevertheless seems destined to involve ISIS. In January, the group identified Afghanistan and Pakistan—a region referred to as "Khorasan"—as integral to its plans to establish an Islamic caliphate. Impoverished and unstable, the country has long been a fertile ground for extremist politics—a situation that the U.S.-led military coalition has been powerless to stop.

Editorial: Putin’s missile ploy | Boston Herald

Negotiators in Switzerland may still be working on a deal to end international sanctions against Iran as part of a nuclear pact, but Russia’s Vladimir Putin, well, he has already made up his mind.
Russia has, of course, been Iran’s best buddy all along in the multi-national talks, but this past week Putin decided to reward Iran’s alleged good behavior ahead of an actual agreement with the sale of the powerful S-300 air defense missile system.
The Russians had put the then $800 million deal on hold back in 2010, but Putin went on record Thursday saying Iran should be rewarded for showing “a great degree of flexibility and a desire to reach compromise” in the talks. That Russia, with economic problems of its own, could use the cash flow from the sale — and from a deal to help build at least two new nuclear reactors — surely sweetens the pot.
Putin also insisted the missile sale — in advance of any real agreement with Iran — does not violate international sanctions. How? Well, because he says it doesn’t, that’s how.
Secretary of State John Kerry has stamped his little foot, but every so lightly, “raising” the issue with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said, “We don’t think this will have an impact on unity in terms of inside the [Lausanne] negotiating room.”
Gosh, there’s a relief!
Putin also maintains that the missile system is strictly defensive, shouldn’t pose a threat to Israel and may serve “as a deterrent factor in connection with the situation in Yemen.”
However a recent analysis in The Daily Beast found the so-called defensive system already deployed in Russia allows it to dominate neighboring Georgia and pose a serious threat to the Ukraine. It’s pretty much the same kind of missile — only newer and more powerful — that shot the civilian airliner out of the sky in Ukraine last July, killing 298 people.
“Russia uses these missiles for the outright dominance of its neighbors’ skies, which is why Israel, the Gulf states, and Turkey should be worried about Iran receiving them,” wrote Will Cathcart, a former media adviser to the president of Georgia.
So, yes, this is no simple “defensive” system. And it’s time that Kerry did more than “raise” the issue in Lausanne while Putin continues to pick his diplomatic pockets.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder.  Psychopathy is sometimes confused with thinking (psychotic) disorders or mood disorders, but these disorders are markedly different in the areas of the brain that are affected and in the behaviors that result.  Psychopathy is about control; psychopaths are without conscience and have a pathological need to control other people on whom the psychopath has no claim nor has any right to control.
