Dave Goldberg, husband of Facebook exec Sheryl Sandberg, dies overnight, family says

Dave Goldberg, the chief executive of SurveyMonkey and the husband of Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, died suddenly Friday night, according to a public Facebook post from his brother, Robert Goldberg.
Although details surrounding Goldberg’s death weren’t immediately available, the statement suggested it was unexpected.
“It’s with incredible shock and sadness that I’m letting our friends and family know that my amazing brother, Dave Goldberg, beloved husband of Sheryl Sandberg, father of two wonderful children, and son of Paula Goldberg, passed away suddenly last night,” Goldberg writes.
“In this time of sorrow, we mourn his passing and remember what an amazing husband, father, brother, son and friend he was,” the statement added.
“Dave’s genius, courage and leadership were overshadowed only by his compassion, friendship and heart. Our sympathy goes out to them and to all who were touched by this extraordinary man,” SurveyMonkey said in a statement. “We are all heartbroken.”
Goldberg’s bio on the company’s Web site says the CEO:
“Has been a successful entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and technology and music industry executive. He has run, and successfully grown, several online consumer businesses.”
Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg shared Goldberg’s statement on his page and added one his own:
“Dave Goldberg was an amazing person and I am glad I got to know him,” Zuckerberg wrote. “My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family. I hope friends will join me in celebrating his life by sharing your memories of Dave on his proflle, as his brother Rob suggests.”
An outpouring of sadness quickly spread online among members of the tech community.
Goldberg grew up in Minneapolis, the son of a law school professor, according to Business Insider. He attended Harvard, where he graduated with a degree in history and government. After a winding career in the music industry, he ended up at Yahoo, where he met his future wife.
“I met my wife in ’96 in LA,” he told Business Insider in a profile last month. “But we didn’t start dating until 2002. We went on a trip and we started dating. I was still in LA and she had moved to the Bay Area. I lost the coin flip as to where we were going to live. I liked L.A. and my job was in L.A.”
Goldberg joined SurveyMonkey in 2009 and and grew the closely held company from 12 employees to more than 450, according to the Journal. During that time, Goldberg has been an outspoken advocate of equal pay in the workplace and an ardent supporter of his wife’s high-profile career. Understanding the difficulties Sandberg had faced as a woman in business, he told the Miami Herald, is one of the reason he aimed to make SurveyMonkey a company that attracted and retained senior level female talent.
“On the day–to-day stuff we both ask each other for advice,” Goldberg told the Los Angeles Times in 2013. But it is great having one of the smartest people in business as your partner. I don’t have to make an appointment to ask what you think about this or whatever, it’s good with my team. I always say, ‘Well Sheryl said.'”
Sandberg detailed many of the challenges she faced as a woman in the workplace in her book “Lean In,” which brought her even more global recognition. She also devotes an entire chapter in the book to the importance of women choosing a spouse who will be an equal partner at home, a role that Goldberg publicly embraced.
Despite his massive success, Goldberg told the Times that he aimed for a work-life balance so he could spend more time with his family. Having a close partnership with his wife, he told the Miami Herald, was what made that balance possible.
“We made the decision on this particular thing, that we are going to be home with our kids,” he told the Times. “I am at home with my kids from 6 to 8. If I have a work dinner, I’ll schedule to have dinner after 8. But we’re working at night. You’ll get plenty of emails from me post-8 p.m. when my kids go to bed.”

Dave Goldberg died from head injuries sustained when he fell off a treadmill

It is highly unusual for an accomplished executive to be remembered first as a spouse. But that was the case for Dave Goldberg, the chief executive of SurveyMonkey, who died unexpectedly Friday in Mexico at the age of 47, evidently sustaining severe head injuries after falling off a treadmill while on vacation.
The manner of death was reported by the Associated Press on Monday. Goldberg was the husband of Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer and author of the women’s empowerment book “Lean In.” Their marriage was an object of admiration for two-career couples and those who aspire to have such a bond.

That partnership was a central theme of Sandberg’s best-selling, support-group-generating book, in which she tells women that their most important career move is choosing the right life partner.
“Dave taught me how to change a diaper when our son was eight days old,” she wrote, highlighting the even footing of their marriage.
As Sandberg became a female icon, Goldberg boasted about her success and echoed her mantras, often telling reporters how he, too, left work at 5:30 p.m. to have dinner with their two children — but was working again by 8 p.m., when they were in bed.
His work alone would be reason for attention to be paid to his early death, especially within Silicon Valley. After graduating magna cum laude from Harvard and spending a few years at consulting firm Bain & Company and Capitol Records, Goldberg struck out on his own in the early ’90s.
He founded Launch Media, one of the first companies to venture into streaming music online. Goldberg could envision the future, said Jimmy Pitaro, who worked a cubicle away from him at Launch (which was acquired by Yahoo) and is now president of Disney Interactive.
“If you think about what Launch was doing as early as 1998, it’s everything that is popular today,” Pitaro said in an interview. “Video on demand, there’s Vevo. Personalized music, there’s Pandora. Subscription music, there’s Spotify.”
Goldberg’s key to success, as he moved to Yahoo, the venture capital firm Benchmark and SurveyMonkey? He seemed to stay calm and organized no matter how busy he was, Pitaro said.
His desk was always very messy. But he would call me from the road and say, ‘Hey, I need that document,’ and I would walk over to his desk, and he would know exactly where it was,” Pitaro said.
Goldberg became chief executive of SurveyMonkey in 2009 and is credited with taking it from a 12-employee company to a 500-employee enterprise valued at $2 billion. Those who depended on him for advice say his personality was as helpful as his business savvy.
“For someone who was involved in so many things, there was never a time that I felt a call or e-mail to Dave was an inconvenience to him,” said Tim Sullivan, chief executive of Ancestry.com, where Goldberg was a board member. (And according to Sullivan, Goldberg was a user long before he joined the company. He liked to explore his family history with his mother, Paula.)
Goldberg also served on the board of The Washington Post Co. before it was sold to Amazon founder Jeffrey P. Bezos. Don Graham, the chairman of that board and The Post’s former publisher, said he felt that in knowing Goldberg, he knew a great secret: Goldberg was one of the most brilliant people in Silicon Valley.
And Graham couldn’t help but be impressed with Goldberg’s marriage, too. As the son of Katharine Graham, the paper’s longtime publisher and chairman, “I’ve been in a good position to watch the reactions of men to very successful women,” Graham said.
“As Sheryl succeeded, Dave was simply so secure about his worth that he was able to take pride in everything she did and be unaffected in his love for her.”
Perhaps he would not have minded that even in his death, it was his marriage that many admired most.

Dave Goldberg’s death points to rise and risks of treadmills in era of smartphones

Details on Dave Goldberg’s death are still murky. The entrepreneur and husband of Facebook’s chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, was found bleeding out in a Mexican hotel gym on Friday. He died shortly afterward at a nearby hospital, but the strange circumstances are only slowly emerging.
Despite the darkness surrounding the incident, it is nonetheless shining a spotlight on the contraption at the center of the tech executive’s death: your run-of-the-mill treadmill.
Goldberg slipped and fell while using one of the machines at a swanky Four Seasons near Puerto Vallarta. He hit his head and died from brain trauma and blood loss, local authorities told CNN.

But his freakish accident actually isn’t that rare. Every year, tens of thousands of Americans are injured on treadmills. Thousands are taken to the emergency room. A handful die.
Data suggest that the problem is getting worse. As high-tech, high-powered treadmills proliferate, so, too, do the digital distractions that make the machines even more dangerous.
“We have to weigh the costs and the benefits of these types of activities and just be aware of what some of the risks are,” says Janessa M. Graves, a professor at the College of Nursing at Washington State University who led a 2013 study of exercise machine injuries.
Treadmills are almost as old as Western civilization. The Romans used them to grind grain. They were later adapted to horses, then prisoners. It wasn’t until after World War II that cardiologists started recommending their use. When the first cheap home treadmill was invented in 1968, the trend was off and running.
Today, treadmills are the nation’s most popular type of exercise equipment. More than 50 million Americans now use them, CBS reported. The exercise industry grew by 3.5 percent in 2014 to a total of $84.3 billion, and “treadmills continue to be the largest selling exercise equipment category by a large margin,” according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.
But exercise equipment — and treadmills in particular — can also be dangerous.
“Almost 460,000 people were sent to the hospital in 2012 for injuries related to exercise equipment,” according to USA Today. “The vast majority — nearly 428,000 were treated and released for their injuries — but about 32,000 were hospitalized or were dead on arrival.”
Treadmills account for the majority of such exercise equipment injuries, Graves told The Washington Post in a phone interview. In a study of 1,782 injury reports from 2007 to 2011, she found that “treadmill machines comprise 66% of injuries but constitute approximately only one-fourth the market share of such equipment.”
“Mechanical belt-driven equipment may present disproportionate injury risk in mechanical home exercise equipment,” she wrote in her study. “While we do not have data on the use of these machines, our study suggests the need to consider the hazards associated with in-home mechanical exercise equipment in the context of exercise recommendations.”
Graves says she was shocked not only by the proportion of injuries caused by treadmills but also by the victims. “We were surprised by the number of pediatric injuries that we saw,” she says. “There was a pretty high incidence among kids, especially 0 to 4 years old, also 5 to 9 years old.” In many cases, kids turned on their parents’ treadmills, only to burn their hands on the fast-moving tracks or, worse, get their fingers caught in the powerful machines.
According to data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), roughly 19,000 people went to emergency rooms in 2009 because of treadmill injuries, including nearly 6,000 children.

Incidents like Goldberg’s death are outliers, Graves argues. Instead, most treadmill injuries among adults are simply sprains or strains to the lower extremities. “I don’t think our data suggests that those incidents that make the news are common,” she says. Those incidents are the ones that tend to stir debate, however. In 2009, Mike Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, died after getting her neck caught in a treadmill cord, setting off a national discussion over the safety of the devices.
What is concerning is the increase in exercise equipment injuries, Graves says. According to NEISS data, these injuries nearly tripled from 1991 to 2012. The same is true of treadmill injuries, she adds.
The rise in exercise-equipment-related injuries could be due to two factors: the spread in fitness equipment as devices have gotten cheaper and more powerful, and the proliferation of smartphones and other mobile electronic devices that may distract us as we try to run. The iPhone was introduced in 2007, for example, and exercise equipment injuries increased 45 percent over the next three years.
Commercial treadmills at health clubs also feature an increasing number of buttons to be pushed and monitors to be checked, not to mention built-in television controls for built-in screens.
Unfamiliarity with increasingly complex treadmills can be a factor in injuries, says Jared Staver, a Chicago personal injury attorney who says he has handled more than 100 cases involving gym injuries.
“Clearly if there’s not someone there to instruct a user, especially a novice user, in how to use a machine, then I think the technology and the knowledge of how to set the speeds and so forth could certainly play a role in an accident,” he said, stressing that he has no knowledge of Goldberg’s death beyond what he has heard from news accounts.
“There is an inherent risk to working out. We all know that. If you overdo it, you may hurt yourself and obviously you may even die,” Staver says. “It’s kind of ‘user beware.’ If you’re going to go on a foreign machine that you’ve never used before, you have a duty to yourself to make sure you are instructed on that machine’s particular use and you use it accordingly. If you don’t do that but instead go ahead full steam, you may suffer the consequences.”
Graves points out, however, you can get hurt using something as innocuous as a yoga ball or an elastic band — as Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) did on New Year’s Day.
She says more research needs to be done to see if treadmills are really any more dangerous than other types of exercise equipment, and if cellphones are really a distraction to treadmill runners.
“I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that if you’re running on a treadmill and you get this text from a reporter at The Washington Post, then you’ll stop and get thrown off the back,” she says. “So I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that an injury can occur while being distracted by a mobile or electronic device.”
Goldberg’s family has not said how his fatal injury occurred or whether he was using a cellphone at the time.

Dave Goldberg, Head of Web Survey Company and Half of a Silicon Valley Power Couple, Dies at 47

SAN FRANCISCO — Dave Goldberg, the chief executive of SurveyMonkey and the husband ofSheryl K. Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, died on Friday night. He was 47.
His death was confirmed by SurveyMonkey, which is known for its web-based survey technology. The company did not disclose the cause. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook and a friend of the family, said it occurred while Mr. Goldberg was on vacation abroad with Ms. Sandberg.
Mr. Goldberg’s brother, Robert, shared news of his death in a Facebook post and urged people who knew him to post memories on Mr. Goldberg’s memorial Facebook profile.
“To this day, he is the leader and person by which I measure all others,” Karin Gilford, a top executive at Disney ABC Television Group who worked with Mr. Goldberg at a previous start-up and at Yahoo, wrote on his Facebook page.
Mr. Goldberg, a serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur and venture capitalist, lived with Ms. Sandberg in Menlo Park, Calif. They have two children. He is also survived by his mother, Paula Goldberg.
Mr. Goldberg was always quick with a wisecrack, and he kept a sense of humor about being the less famous half of one of Silicon Valley’s pre-eminent power couples. Ms. Sandberg, who achieved global fame with her book “Lean In,” about the challenges faced by women in the workplace, often said she would not have been as successful in her career without his substantial assistance at home.
“We made the decision on this particular thing, that we are going to be home with our kids. I am at home with my kids from 6 to 8,” he told The Los Angeles Times in 2013. “But we’re working at night. You’ll get plenty of emails from me post-8 p.m. when my kids go to bed.”
Mr. Goldberg joined SurveyMonkey in 2009 after stints at Benchmark Capital and Yahoo.
At the time, the company had 14 employees. He built it into a provider of web surveys on almost every topic imaginable, be it customer service or politics, with 500 employees and 25 million surveys created. News reports said it was valued at nearly $2 billion when it raised a round of funding last year.
“Online surveys have come a long way,” he said in a lunch interview last month. “We have investors use it to figure out things like the customer churn at Netflix, what Ugg sales are doing.”
Mr. Goldberg was particularly proud of his company’s ability to predict election results through its surveys, noting that SurveyMonkey was sometimes more accurate than traditional pollsters.
He viewed online surveys as an inexpensive way for companies to gather data about their customers and competitors.
“We could tell Google Glass would be a tough sell,” he said in the April interview, discussing Google’s experimental computer mounted on eyeglass frames. “The cameras made people feel weird, and they thought the look interfered with people, like technology was getting in the way.”
But one weakness of such surveys, he said, is that “people are terrible at telling you what they want.” He added, “They can say what they don’t want.”
Mr. Goldberg grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Harvard in 1989 with a degree in history and government. He joined the consulting firm Bain & Company, then moved to Capitol Records as a marketer. In 1993, he and his best friend from high school started Launch Media, a digital music magazine that was initially distributed by CD-ROM.
In 2001, Yahoo bought Launch, and Mr. Goldberg became head of Yahoo Music, living in Los Angeles. Around that time, he began dating Ms. Sandberg, then an advertising executive at Google, in the Bay Area. “I lost the coin flip as to where we were going to live,” he told Business Insider in a recent interview.
In 2007, he quit Yahoo and joined Benchmark Capital as an entrepreneur in residence, where he spent a couple of years before becoming chief executive of SurveyMonkey.

Dave Goldberg, Silicon Valley Executive, Died of Head Trauma, Mexican Official Says

SAN FRANCISCO — Dave Goldberg, the chief executive of SurveyMonkey and husband of Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, died of head trauma Friday night after he collapsed at the gym at a private resort in Mexico, according to a Mexican government official.
Mr. Goldberg, 47, was on vacation with family and friends at a private beach-front villa near the Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita, a large development with two hotels and numerous private residences close to Puerto Vallarta in southwest Mexico, according to a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in Nayarit State.
Mr. Goldberg left his room around 4 p.m. on Friday, collapsed while exercising and died of head trauma and blood loss, said the spokesman. His brother, Robert Goldberg, found him on the floor of a gym at around 7 p.m., with blood around him. The spokesman said it appeared “he fell off the treadmill and cracked his head open.”
Mr. Goldberg was transported to Hospital San Javier in Nuevo Vallarta, with weak vital signs, and died there, said the spokesman, who added that the episode appeared to be an accident. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook and a friend of the family, had said the death occurred while Mr. Goldberg was on vacation with Ms. Sandberg.
Mr. Goldberg’s death was announced by his brother and by SurveyMonkey on Saturday, but no cause or details of where it occurred were disclosed at that time. The lack of information prompted a wave of speculation about what happened to Mr. Goldberg, who was well regarded as an entrepreneur and mentor and was the less famous half of one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent power couples.
Ms. Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, has made no public statements about her husband’s death.
John O’Sullivan, general manager of the Four Seasons Punta Mita, said in a phone interview that there had not been any incident at the areas of the resort managed by the company.
The family is planning an invitation-only celebration of Mr. Goldberg’s life on Tuesday at Stanford Memorial Auditorium. Men planning to attend were urged not to wear ties “in keeping with Dave’s lifelong hatred of ties,” according to an emailed invitation sent to friends of the couple. The invitation added, “Out of respect for the family, please do not take pictures or post to social media” from the event.
The Walt Disney Company said it would move the time of its second-quarter earnings release on Tuesday so executives could attend the funeral. Ms. Sandberg is a Disney board member.
Mr. Goldberg, who worked at Yahoo and at a venture capital firm before running SurveyMonkey, lived with Ms. Sandberg in Menlo Park, Calif. They have two children. He is also survived by his mother, Paula Goldberg.
SurveyMonkey, a start-up that makes web survey technology, has not yet named an interim successor to Mr. Goldberg. Selina Tobaccowala is the company’s president, and Tim Maly is its chief operating officer and chief financial officer.
Correction: May 4, 2015
An earlier version of this article misstated the Mexican state represented by a prosecutor’s office spokesman who gave details of Mr. Goldberg’s death. It is Nayarit, not Jalisco.

Race, Class and Neglect - NYTimes.com

Every time you’re tempted to say that America is moving forward on race — that prejudice is no longer as important as it used to be — along comes an atrocity to puncture your complacency. Almost everyone realizes, I hope, that the Freddie Gray affair wasn’t an isolated incident, that it’s unique only to the extent that for once there seems to be a real possibility that justice may be done.
And the riots in Baltimore, destructive as they are, have served at least one useful purpose: drawing attention to the grotesque inequalities that poison the lives of too many Americans.
Yet I do worry that the centrality of race and racism to this particular story may convey the false impression that debilitating poverty and alienation from society are uniquely black experiences. In fact, much though by no means all of the horror one sees in Baltimore and many other places is really about class, about the devastating effects of extreme and rising inequality.
Take, for example, issues of health and mortality. Many people have pointed out that there are a number of black neighborhoods in Baltimore where life expectancy compares unfavorably with impoverished Third World nations. But what’s really striking on a national basis is the way class disparities in death rates have been soaring even among whites.
Most notably, mortality among white women has increased sharply since the 1990s, with the rise surely concentrated among the poor and poorly educated; life expectancy among less educated whites has been falling at rates reminiscent of the collapse of life expectancy in post-Communist Russia.
And yes, these excess deaths are the result of inequality and lack of opportunity, even in those cases where their direct cause lies in self-destructive behavior. Overuse of prescription drugs, smoking, and obesity account for a lot of early deaths, but there’s a reason such behaviors are so widespread, and that reason has to do with an economy that leaves tens of millions behind.
It has been disheartening to see some commentators still writing as if poverty were simply a matter of values, as if the poor just mysteriously make bad choices and all would be well if they adopted middle-class values. Maybe, just maybe, that was a sustainable argument four decades ago, but at this point it should be obvious that middle-class values only flourish in an economy that offers middle-class jobs.
The great sociologist William Julius Wilson argued long ago that widely-decried social changes among blacks, like the decline of traditional families, were actually caused by the disappearance of well-paying jobs in inner cities. His argument contained an implicit prediction: if other racial groups were to face a similar loss of job opportunity, their behavior would change in similar ways.
And so it has proved. Lagging wages — actually declining in real terms for half of working men — and work instability have been followed by sharp declines in marriage, rising births out of wedlock, and more.
As Isabel Sawhill of the Brookings Institution writes: “Blacks have faced, and will continue to face, unique challenges. But when we look for the reasons why less skilled blacks are failing to marry and join the middle class, it is largely for the same reasons that marriage and a middle-class lifestyle is eluding a growing number of whites as well.”
So it is, as I said, disheartening still to see commentators suggesting that the poor are causing their own poverty, and could easily escape if only they acted like members of the upper middle class.
And it’s also disheartening to see commentators still purveying another debunked myth, that we’ve spent vast sums fighting poverty to no avail (because of values, you see.)
In reality, federal spending on means-tested programs other than Medicaid has fluctuated between 1 and 2 percent of G.D.P. for decades, going up in recessions and down in recoveries. That’s not a lot of money — it’s far less than other advanced countries spend — and not all of it goes to families below the poverty line.
Despite this, measures that correct well-known flaws in the statistics show that we have made some real progress against poverty. And we would make a lot more progress if we were even a fraction as generous toward the needy as we imagine ourselves to be.
The point is that there is no excuse for fatalism as we contemplate the evils of poverty in America. Shrugging your shoulders as you attribute it all to values is an act of malign neglect. The poor don’t need lectures on morality, they need more resources — which we can afford to provide — and better economic opportunities, which we can also afford to provide through everything from training and subsidies to higher minimum wages. Baltimore, and America, don’t have to be as unjust as they are.

What Is Your Purpose? - NYTimes.com

Every reflective person sooner or later faces certain questions: What is the purpose of my life? How do I find a moral compass so I can tell right from wrong? What should I do day by day to feel fulfillment and deep joy?
As late as 50 years ago, Americans could consult lofty authority figures to help them answer these questions.
Some of these authority figures were public theologians. Reinhold Niebuhr was on the cover of Time magazine. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote about everything from wonder to sin to civil rights. Harry Emerson Fosdick wrote a book called “On Being a Real Person” on how to live with integrity.
Other authority figures were part of the secular priesthood of intellectuals.
John Dewey advocated pragmatism. John-Paul Sartre and his American popularizers championed existentialism. Hannah Arendt wrote big books on evil and the life of the mind.
Public discussion was awash in philosophies about how to live well. There was a coherent moral ecology you could either go along with or rebel against.
All of that went away over the past generation or two. It is hard to think of any theologian with the same public influence that Niebuhr and Heschel had. Intellectuals are given less authority and are more specialized. They write more for each other and are less likely to volley moral systems onto the public stage.
These days we live in a culture that is more diverse, decentralized, interactive and democratized. The old days when gray-haired sages had all the answers about the ultimate issues of life are over. But new ways of having conversations about the core questions haven’t yet come into being.
Public debate is now undermoralized and overpoliticized. We have many shows where people argue about fiscal policy but not so many on how to find a vocation or how to measure the worth of your life. In fact, we now hash out our moral disagreement indirectly, under the pretense that we’re talking about politics, which is why arguments about things like tax policy come to resemble holy wars.
Intellectual prestige has drifted away from theologians, poets and philosophers and toward neuroscientists, economists, evolutionary biologists and big data analysts. These scholars have a lot of knowledge to bring, but they’re not in the business of offering wisdom on the ultimate questions.
The shift has meant there is less moral conversation in the public square. I doubt people behave worse than before, but we are less articulate about the inner life. There are fewer places in public where people are talking about the things that matter most.
As a result, many feel lost or overwhelmed. They feel a hunger to live meaningfully, but they don’t know the right questions to ask, the right vocabulary to use, the right place to look or even if there are ultimate answers at all.
As I travel on a book tour, I find there is an amazing hunger to shift the conversation. People are ready to talk a little less about how to do things and to talk a little more about why ultimately they are doing them.
This is true among the young as much as the older. In fact, young people, raised in today’s hypercompetitive environment, are, if anything, hungrier to find ideals that will give meaning to their activities. It’s true of people in all social classes. Everyone is born with moral imagination — a need to feel that life is in service to some good.
The task now is to come up with forums where these sorts of conversations can happen in a more modern, personal and interactive way.
I thought I’d do my part by asking readers to send me their answers to the following questions: Do you think you have found the purpose to your life, professional or otherwise? If so, how did you find it? Was there a person, experience or book or sermon that decisively helped you get there?
If you have answers to these questions, go the website for my book, “The Road to Character,” click on First Steps and send in your response. We’ll share as many as we can on the site’s blog called The Conversation, and I’ll write a column or two reporting on what I’ve learned about how people find purpose these days.
I hope this exercise will be useful in giving people an occasion to sit down and spell out the organizing frame of their lives. I know these essays will help others who are looking for meaning and want to know how to find more of it.
Mostly the idea is to use a community of conversation as a way to get somewhere: to revive old vocabularies, modernize old moral traditions, come up with new schools and labels so that people have more concrete building blocks and handholds as they try to figure out what life is all about.
