BALTIMORE — The city is bracing for more protests this weekend, following a tumultuous week that included looting and arson, the arrival of National Guard troops and the filing of criminal charges against six police officers in the case of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man whose death in police custody set off the unrest.

Thousands of people are expected here Saturday for a march organized by Malik Shabazz, president of the Washington-based Black Lawyers for Justice and a former chairman of the New Black Panther Party. For nearly two weeks, ever since Mr. Gray died, city leaders have been warning against “outside agitators,” an oblique reference to Mr. Shabazz, who is clearly making them nervous.

“They should be nervous,” Mr. Shabazz said in an interview Friday night. “The youth went off and had a rebellion because the established leadership has not represented them well.”

Protesters are expected to gather late Saturday morning in two spots: at the Gilmor Homes in northwest Baltimore where Mr. Gray was arrested, and also at City Hall, where Mr. Shabazz said he would give a “keynote address” at 3 p.m., as part of a mass rally that will begin at 2 p.m. and is scheduled to end at 6 p.m.

Mr. Shabazz, 46, who has led similar protests in cities like Ferguson, Mo., and Charleston, S.C., has been labeled “an extremist” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which calls him a “racist black nationalist” with a “well-documented history of violently anti-Semitic remarks and accusations about the inherent evil of white people” who is “particularly skilled at orchestrating provocative protests.”

A march he led here last Saturday turned briefly violent after he urged protesters at a City Hall rally to “shut it down!” Mr. Shabazz said afterward that he was calling only for civil disobedience, not violence, but added that he was not surprised by the riots that tore through Baltimore earlier this week.

“The rebellion was brewing before I got here, and the rebellion was going to happen whether I got here or not,” he said.

Dershowitz: Charges Against Baltimore Cops a ‘Sad Day for Justice’

    by Pam Key1 May 2015348
Friday on Newsmax TV’s  “The Steve Malzberg Show,” former Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz said Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s heavy-handed charging of the police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray was a “sad day for justice” and “motivated by crowd control”
“This is a very sad day for justice in the United States, in Baltimore and in Maryland,” Dershowitz said. “Today had nothing to do with justice. Today was crowd control. Everything was motivated by a threat of riot and a desire to prevent riots.”
“There is no plausible, hypothetical, conceivable case for murder under the facts as we now know them. You might say conceivably, there is a case for manslaughter,” he continued
He added, “My prediction—they have overplayed their hand. It is unlikely they’ll get any convictions in this case as a result of this and if they do there is a good possibility they will get reversed on appeal.”

Live Updates–Baltimore Curfew, Night 4: Freddie Gray's Arresting Officers Indicted

1:41 AM EST: Dan Fleuette’s report on the ground level:
The organic uprising led by members of the inner city community, which started after Freddie Gray died in the hospital after being apprehended earlier in April, has slowly transitioned to a manufactured uprising, and appears to be coordinated by anarchists and other professional grievance organizations.
While Monday’s protests were violent and destructive, once the city imposed a curfew, there was little activity on the streets after 10PM, Tuesday’s tear gassing notwithstanding.
Tonight at Baltimore’s City Hall, there was a palpable sense of agitation in the crowd around curfew time — a small group of protesters flatly refused to honor the curfew and were quickly dispatched by police. I personally witnessed six arrests.
As far as I could tell, there were none of Freddie Gray’s peers, friends, or neighbors in the crowd that was left after the curfew. Rather, there were young white anarchists, “students against Israeli apartheid” (who incidentally claimed to have seen police beating on protesters), and other black bloc protesters who were being arrested and defying police.
My prediction: if the protests and violence continue, it will be young white kids wearing masks over their faces that you’ll see on the television, not inner city Baltimore residents.
