ESKI MOSUL, Iraq (AP) - Inside the Islamic State's realm, the paper testifying that you have "repented" from your heretical past must be carried at all times. Many people laminate it just to be safe. It can mean the difference between life and death. Bilal Abdullah learned that not long after the extremists took over his Iraqi village, Eski Mosul, a year ago. As he walked down the street, an Islamic State fighter in a pickup truck asked directions to a local mosque. When Abdullah didn't recognize the mosque's name, the fighter became suspicious.

The latest on church shooting: Victims' names to be released2:54 p.m. Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten's office says she will provide the names of the nine victims of a fatal shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, at an afternoon news conference.
Suspect in church shooting had apartheid-era patchesCHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Dylann Storm Roof drove around with a Confederate flag on his license plate - not exactly an unusual sight in the South. But on his Facebook page, he wore a jacket with the flags of the former white-racist regimes of South Africa and Rhodesia. A picture began to emerge Thursday of the 21-year-old white man arrested in the shooting deaths of nine people during a prayer meeting at a historic black church in Charleston. The Wednesday night attack was decried by stunned community leaders and politicians as a hate crime.

For cigarette smuggler, a perilous life under Islamic StateESKI MOSUL, Iraq (AP) - It was a heart-racing moment. The cigarette smuggler was stuck in line at a checkpoint as, up ahead, Islamic State militants were searching cars. He was running a big risk: The militants have banned smoking and lighting up is punishable with a fine or broken finger. Selling cigarettes can be a death sentence. Falah Abdullah Jamil, 30, relied on his quick wits and silver tongue.

VATICAN CITY (AP) - In a sweeping environmental manifesto aimed at spurring action, Pope Francis called Thursday for a bold cultural revolution to correct what he said was a "structurally perverse" economic system in which the rich exploited the poor, turning Earth into an "immense pile of filth." Francis framed climate change as an urgent moral crisis to address in his eagerly anticipated encyclical, blaming global warming on an unfair, fossil fuel-based industrial model that harms the poor the most.
California reveals details of self-driving car accidentsLOS ANGELES (AP) - California state officials released reports Thursday detailing six accidents that involved self-driving car prototypes, reversing a policy that had shielded details of how the next-generation technology is performing during testing on public roads. The disclosure came after The Associated Press successfully argued to the Department of Motor Vehicles that the agency was improperly withholding the information.

DNA from ancient skeleton shows ties to Native AmericansNEW YORK (AP) - An ancient skeleton found nearly 20 years ago in a river in Washington is related to Native Americans, says a DNA study that could help resolve a long-running dispute over its ancestry and custody. The skeleton, known as Kennewick Man, is about 8,500 years old. The new work argues against earlier suggestions that it wasn't connected to modern native peoples, the researchers said.

Cyber-diagnosis: Should we Google symptoms?

"Stop Googling your symptoms." It's pretty futile advice in age of the internet, when the vast majority of people with a health concern start by typing it into their computer. It's also potentially fatal advice, as the case of teenager Bronte Doyne revealed this week. The teenager, who was suffering from a rare form of liver cancer, begged doctors to take her seriously after she found worrying details about her condition online. But they ignored her and in March 2013, the cancer did just what the internet said it would – it killed her.
