Changing tone on Confederate flag follows years of refusalCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - With heavy security and heightened expectations, a crowd began to gather Tuesday in the sweltering summer heat to demand the removal of the Confederate battle flag from atop a 30-foot pole outside South Carolina's Statehouse. Lawmakers gathering for budget votes could be sweating as well, forced by their governor to declare their positions on the historic but divisive symbol. More than a dozen officers from different police agencies were positioned in the Statehouse lobby. Even more were outside, where people mobilized by the shootings of nine people inside a historic black church in Charleston last week chanted "bring it down, bring it down."
Trade bill clear Senate hurdle, at brink of final passageWASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate pushed bipartisan trade legislation to the brink of final approval Tuesday in a combined effort by President Barack Obama and Republican congressional leaders to rescue a measure that appeared all but dead less than two weeks ago. The legislation cleared a key hurdle on a 60-37 vote, precisely the number needed.
Governor: DNA miles from prison is linked to escaped inmatesBELLMONT, N.Y. (AP) - DNA found just miles from a maximum-security prison is linked to the convicted murderers who escaped more than two weeks ago, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, as searchers using dogs and helicopters on Tuesday continued to focus intensely on a heavily wooded area in far northern New York. Cuomo told reporters Monday night that the current lead has "good evidence, DNA data" regarding inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt. It wasn't immediately clear if the DNA belonged to one or both of the inmates.
Midwest states clean up after possible tornadoesCHICAGO (AP) - Strong storms that swept across northern Illinois spawned several possible tornadoes, severely damaged homes and forced first responders to pull survivors from basements, officials said Tuesday. Northern Indiana and parts of Iowa and Michigan also saw damage from possible tornadoes, with storms knocking out power to thousands of people late Monday and early Tuesday. But by Tuesday morning, the skies had cleared and the rain had moved east toward Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
White House to release hostage policy review WednesdayWASHINGTON (AP) - The White House on Wednesday will release its months-long review of U.S. policy for dealing with the families of American hostages. President Barack Obama ordered the review after the deaths of Americans held by Islamic State militants. Some families of those killed complained about their dealings with the government, including threats of prosecution if they paid ransom to secure their loved ones' release.
Facebook now worth more than Wal-Mart on stock marketNEW YORK (AP) - Facebook is now bigger than Wal-Mart, at least when it comes to its value on the stock market. The world's biggest online social network knocked the world's largest retailer out of the top 10 list of the highest-valued companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index on Monday and the gap widened on Tuesday.
Study: Scant evidence that medical pot helps many illnessesCHICAGO (AP) - Medical marijuana has not been proven to work for many illnesses that state laws have approved it for, according to the first comprehensive analysis of research on its potential benefits. The strongest evidence is for chronic pain and for muscle stiffness in multiple sclerosis, according to the review, which evaluated 79 studies involving more than 6,000 patients. Evidence was weak for many other conditions, including anxiety, sleep disorders, and Tourette's syndrome and the authors recommend more research.

Massachusetts newlyweds win $15 million in lotteryEASTHAM, Mass. (AP) - Newlyweds from Cape Cod are planning to buy a house, pay off student loans and buy a truck after winning $15 million on an instant scratch-off ticket. Brady appeal begins at NFL headquartersNEW YORK (AP) - Tom Brady and representatives from the players' union are meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell at NFL headquarters as the New England quarterback appeals his four-game suspension. Brady was suspended by the league for his role in the use of deflated footballs in the AFC championship game win over Indianapolis. He arrived at the NFL's Park Avenue offices Tuesday morning, as did attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who is leading Brady's defense.

Waterloo: Why Britain still needs Europe

Thursday marked the 200th anniversary of Waterloo. It was a fascinating battle not just because it meant the end of Napoleon Bonaparte, but also because no single nation won it. It also has something useful to say as Britain draws lines of engagement ahead of a referendum on whether or not to leave the European Union.
