This 75-Year-Old Map Shows Europe ‘Ready for War’

The declarations had not yet come, but on Aug. 28, 1939, Europe already knew war was on its way. On that day, 75 years ago, the armies that would fight what became World War II had gathered.
Just how many soldiers that meant differed by nation, as TIME pointed out to its readers with the map below, which ran in the Sept. 4, 1939 issue. The annotated chart also provides evidence that, no matter how many men were under arms, there was no way for the continent to be entirely ready for what was to follow. In Poland, for example, President Ignacy Moscicki was said to have told Roosevelt that he was willing to negotiate with Germany. By the time Sept. 4 came around — the magazine arrived on stands before then— that willingness had already proved pointless.
On desktop, roll over the map to get a closer look. If you’re reading on a mobile device, click to zoom.

Stay tuned next week for further coverage of the 75th anniversary of the beginning of World War II.

Israel Acknowledges Jews in fact Khazars, Plans Migration to Ukraine

From Left to Right: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. Everyone in this photo is Jewish, just a coincidence!
“A blue-ribbon team of scholars from leading research institutions and museums has just issued a secret report to the government, acknowledging that European Jews are in fact Khazars.”, writes Jim Wald on The Times of Israel website. Jim Wald claims Jews have a plan to reform Khazaria (Chazerai in Yiddish) in Ukraine by sending Ashkenazi settlers there.
Texe Marrs seems to take it at face value in his article titled The Serpent People Return to Ukraine. The following question has to be raised though: what if the Khazar origin theory for Ashkenazis is actually disinfo? A Mossad hoax to divert attention away from the real nasty stuff perpetrated by Zionists.
The admission by the Israelis that the Jews are not related to ancient Israel but to Khazaria was reported in The Times of Israel as a Leaked Report: Israel Acknowledges Jews in fact Khazars; Secret Plan for Reverse Migration to Ukraine, March 18, 2014). That article, by Professor Jim Wald, related that the Israeli leadership in Jerusalem is sending military equipment and settlers from Israel to Ukraine.
They have taken charge of that ravaged country’s government and finances and intend eventually to make the Ukraine a “second homeland”. As a huge proof for this report, even though Ukraine’s total Jewish population is currently at only 0.2%, Ukraine’s new President Petro Poroshenko, is Jewish and so is Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. However with all that said, the international media, including the Russian media, are mostly focusing their attention on how how “evil neo-nazi Right Sector rule in Ukraine”. The truth is that the neo-nazis in Ukraine are only used a diversion tactic from the real deal and from who is really in charge in Ukraine.
Their plan, leaked by governmental insiders, came only after Netanyahu and his cabinet reviewed growing DNA genetic evidence that the Jews are not the descendants of Abraham. Instead, they came from Khazaria, of which Kiev, Ukraine is the centerpiece. In fact, the Jews of Israel and the U.S. are of Ukrainian heritage. Ukraine is in the heartland of Khazaria.
No doubt the Zionists have wrapped their greedy fingers around Ukraine, but does it really have anything to do with their Khazar past?
Keep your eyes open for lies, not in hatred or fear, but curiosity and love of truth. Remember that there are Jews doing that too.

Kiev claims Russia has invaded Ukraine but offers no proof

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko
The chorus of allegations about a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has President Poroshenko calling for an emergency meeting of the country’s security and defense council, while the Prime Minister Yatsenyuk is calling for a Russian asset freeze.
“I have made a decision to cancel my working visit to the Republic of Turkey due to sharp aggravation of the situation in Donetsk region, particularly in Amvrosiivka and Starobeshevo, as Russian troops were brought into Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko said in a statement on his website.
The Russian representative to the OSCE Andrey Kelin has given a firm response to the allegations, saying that “We have said that no Russian involvement has been spotted, there are no soldiers or equipment.”
“Accusations relating to convoys of armored personnel carriers have been heard during the past week and the week before that,” he said. “All of them were proven false back then, and is being proven false again now.”
“There is no sense in these accusations,” he said.
Yet, Ukraine is going to call for a meeting of the UN Security Council, said Poroshenko.
“The world must provide assessment of sharp aggravation of the situation in Ukraine,” he added.
Poroshenko added that on Thursday there will be a meeting of Security and Defense Council to elaborate the plan for further action.
“The President must stay in Kyiv today,” he said.
As with previous allegations of smuggled troops, equipment and other underhand tactics, no evidence has been offered.
Given the confusion arising out of the recent capture of alleged Russian paratroopers and the subsequent videos with interviews released by the Ukrainians, the government is going to the US, EU and the G7 to ask for a freeze on Russian assets.
The Western media has been exploding with allegations, with everyone from the CNN to the New York Times going about the task in a very similar manner: quoting Ukrainian politicians, as well as US figures, the ambassador to Ukraine and the State Department. One similarity could be spotted: they all centered on passionate statements, no evidence, and were followed by a big background into things that took place over the past week.
Whenever there was any mention of someone actually seeing Russian tanks, it seemed a mobile phone was never on hand to take a photograph.
Meanwhile, the OSCE has announced that it’s calling an emergency meeting in Vienna – for the second time in August – giving no further details.
When the head of its Ukraine mission, Paul Picard, was asked if the monitoring team saw any evidence of Russia crossing the border with troops and tanks, the answer was “no.” He told journalists of round-the-clock surveillance by a team of 16 people. The team said “we are hearing shooting, but it’s difficult to tell just how far.”
This didn’t stop the Ukrainian government from alleging that the border town of Novoazovsky in the south-east has fallen under Russian control – a mix of troops and members of the eastern-Ukrainian uprising.
“We only know that the mayor of Novoazovsk said that after 10 rounds of artillery were heard, the Ukrainian soldiers retreated from the city, and the self-defense forces entered,” Kelin said.
He added that “the Ukrainian ambassador has offered no claims to counter this information.”

KIEV, Ukraine — Fighting between Russian troops and the Ukrainian military worsened early Thursday, prompting fears in Ukraine that a Russian invasion of their territory has begun.
Ukrainian troops are continuing to battle combined Russian and separatist forces on a new, southern front around the border town of Novoazovsk, east of Crimea on the Sea of Azov. In addition, a military spokesman said Russian troops are increasing surveillance from northern Crimea, the autonomous Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in March.

Window on Eurasia: Russia’s Military Mobilization System ‘Just as Ineffective as Ukraine’s,’ Moscow Commentator Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, August 28 – Now that the Russian military has invaded Ukraine and has engaged in combat with Ukrainian forces, it is time to assess the ability of each country to mobilize its forces for war. One Moscow commentator has done that and concluded that “the system of mobilization of the Russian army is just as ineffective as that of the Ukrainian.”

In the current issue of “Sovershenno Sekretno,” Aleksandr Kruglov bases his conclusion not only on the fact that neither country has moved far from its Soviet roots in this regard but also on a close examination of what each has been doing to change that situation in recent years (sovsekretno.ru/articles/id/4295/).

Ukraine’s problems with mobilization have received wide attention in the Russian media over the last months, and Kruglov summarizes them.  Efforts to draft more men have fallen short, often far short, even in western Ukraine, and the draft itself has sparked protests and various forms of draft avoidance, including bribery and even flight to Russia.

Given the need for increasing the size of Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine by five to six times to completely defeat the insurgents backed by Russian forces and the related need for the rotation of personnel through frontline units, such resistance seriously limits the ability of Ukrainian commanders to function, the Moscow analyst says.

What is of even greater concern to Kyiv, he suggests, is that resistance among Ukrainians to military service has grown as losses have mounted, a trend that would likely continue if the fighting were to intensify still further.  One reason for that is that Ukrainian forces are sufficiently disordered already that those who fight may not even gain recognition for having done so and the families of casualties may not get support.

And the Ukrainian authorities may be creating additional problems for themselves by offering those who protest against Kyiv the opportunity to avoid charges or convictions by joining the military, a pattern that could mean that some in Ukrainian uniform may be quite ready to desert or otherwise disorder Ukrainian lines.

Kruglov cites the words of Aleksandr Perendzhiyev, an expert of the Russian Association of Military Political Analysts: “the success of mobilization during war directly depends on how the population of the country views the necessity [of the conflict] and thus supports mobilization.”

And that in turn, Perendzhiyev continues, depends to no small degree on “how just the system of mobilization” appears to be and how the government takes care of the wounded and the families of casualties.  On paper at least, Russia’s military system is in better shape – the legal arrangements are defined – but in reality, Moscow faces serious problems as well.

The reason for that, Kruglov says, is that “despite the fact that the Russian armed forces are by their potential much stronger than the Ukrainian ones,” they too bear the marks of their origins in the Soviet past. And in the Russian case, many of “the reforms” that have been carried out in the name of economy have only exacerbated problems.

For example, he continues, the number of military commissariats, which serve as Russia’s draft boards, was cut by 20 times, from 1647 to 81, and their personnel were almost “completely demilitarized.” That effectively destroyed the old Soviet system without putting in place an effective new one.

Under current conditions, Moscow analysts say, the Russian military is “already not capable of conducting mass mobilization” as demonstrated by the system’s failure to be able to organize “even modest training” exercises involving reservists. All such efforts have “ended in failure,” and to conceal that, the defense ministry has “classified” the results.”

Even Vladimir Putin’s intervention in June when he called for the activation of the reserves has not worked well. The results have been far less than were anticipated, in part because such actions are expensive and the regime is not willing or able to put the necessary funds at the disposal of the defense ministry.

In Kruglov’s view, “practice shows, including the latest events in Ukraine, that not one even strong army today is capable of achieving victory using cadre military personnel alone.”  Reserves must be called up, but Moscow faces real problems in that regard because the number of its cadres units was cut by 80 percent and thus cannot form the nucleus of a Russian force.

Moreover, he continues, Russia has failed to set up the kind of strategic reserves any prolonged conflict requires. That means, Kruglov says, that the Russian military will not be in a position “to wage a successful war with a serious opponent even within the limits of its own borders.”

But there is no going back to the “archaic Soviet system of mobilization,” Kruglov suggests, not only because war has changed and made professionalism more important but also because society has changed and is less deferential to the demands of the military. Both those developments will make the mobilization of a Russian military for war more difficult.

More money and time needs to be put into the development of the reserves and their maintenance as a fighting force by providing “a minimum” training periods every six months. “Otherwise,” the “Sovershenno Sekretno” writer says, “in the course of military actions, reservists will become ‘cannon fodder’” and little else.

Russian commanders recognize this and have pushed for such a system, one that would copy the American version. But there has been no willingness on the part of the Russian political leadership to support that, Kruglov says. And again the reason almost certainly is money and the government’s unwillingness to divert it from other goals to the military.

Such arguments against investment in the reserves always seem compelling during peacetime, Kruglov suggests, but they have all too obvious and negative consequences if and when a country goes to war.

More Ukrainian troops desert into Russia, Opposition Grows Stronger

Ukrainian soldiers in a tent camp in Rostov Region
A group of 62 Ukrainian troops have crossed into Russia’s Rostov Region seeking shelter to save their lives amid an intensified counteroffensive recently launched by anti-Kiev militia in southeastern Ukraine.
“Today, 62 servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces turned to Russian border guards asking to let them into the Russian territory near Russia’s settlement of Shramko, Matveyevo-Kurgansky district, with the aim to save their lives,” the spokesman for the FSB’s border guard office in the Rostov Region, Nikolai Sinitsyn, told Itar-Tass news agency on Wednesday.
They were allowed to cross and provided with a transit corridor on the principles of humanism, but only after they left their weapons on the Ukrainian side of the border, Sinitsyn added.
This case became the latest in a series of similar incidents where a total of over 500 Ukrainian troops crossed into Russia since July seeking refuge and medical help.
Earlier this week, Ukraine released videos showing alleged Russian paratroopers captured on Ukrainian territory. Russian Defense Ministry sources were saying that they probably crossed the border by mistake during a routine patrol of an area which wasn’t manned. President Putin, when asked about the issue said he hoped it won’t be blown out of proportion, since Ukrainian troops regularly cross into Russian territory, sometimes in armored vehicles and were never charged with anything and always allowed to return to Ukraine freely.
Kiev’s renewed accusations of Russian military’s alleged operations on Ukrainian territory are “nothing new,” says Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, adding that Russia regularly refutes such reports. Meanwhile Kiev says it has launched a preliminary investigation into the detained men on suspicion of “aiding terrorist groups.”
Ukraine’s own troops in the meantime are also facing prosecution, with General Prosecutor’s office announcing on Wednesday that 1,083 criminal proceeding had been launched since the beginning of the so-called anti-terrorist operation, with people being charged for “disobedience, unauthorized abandonment of a military unit or place of service, desertion, evasion of military service in another way, and so on.”
Anti-Kiev militia in the meantime announced that almost 90 Ukrainian troops laid down their arms and surrendered on Wednesday alone, following at least 129 the day before, Ria reports.
On Sunday, the main headquarters of the Donetsk People’s Republic announced that it had launched a counteroffensive against Kiev’s “punitive forces” in the region, blocking and surrounding many of the military and paramilitary units.
The military equipment captured from local army depots and those forces surrendering en masse has allowed militia to form 2 tank battalions, 3 multiple launcher rocket system batteries, 2 self-propelled howitzer batteries, 3 cannon battalions of various calibers and 8 mortar batteries, the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Donetsk People’s Republic Aleksander Zakharchenko told the press at the time.
The DPR army will no more act in small groups as instead full-bodied independent military units had been formed, he added, announcing the beginning of a major counter-offensive but at the same time calling on Ukrainian troops to surrender and leave the territory of the republic, promising absolute safety for everyone not involved in war crimes against the civilian population.
Ukraine has been engulfed in a violent internal conflict since April, when Kiev’s military began its crackdown on the southeast parts of the country which refused to recognize the coup-installed government.
According to United Nations’ estimates released Tuesday, over 2,249 people have so far been killed and over 6,033 wounded in the fighting in eastern Ukraine. The number of internally displaced Ukrainians has reached 190,000, with another 207,000 finding refuge in Russia, the UN said.

Washington and Kiev Say Moscow Is Sending Heavily Armed Troops Into Ukraine

Ukrainian and U.S. officials accused Moscow of sending heavily armed columns across the border into Ukraine on Wednesday — a move that Washington says is likely part of a “Russian-directed counteroffensive” against Kiev.
During a press conference in Washington on Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said reports indicated that “additional columns of Russian tanks, multiple rocket launchers, and armored vehicles” entered southeastern Ukraine this week, sharply escalating the five-month-old conflict.
“These incursions indicate a Russian-directed counteroffensive is likely under way in Donetsk and Luhansk. Clearly, that is of deep concern to us,” Psaki told reporters.
In Kiev, military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told the New York Times that an armored Russian column entered the town of Amvrosiyivka on Wednesday in what was likely an attempt to expand the current multipronged counteroffensive against Ukrainian troops.
Separatist forces have long claimed that they use weaponry captured from Ukrainian arsenals. However, American officials argue that the hardware in rebel hands includes highly sophisticated air-defense systems — equipment that the Ukrainian armed forces are not believed to posses, according to the Times.
Ukraine went on to accuse the Kremlin of directing troops toward the coastal city of Mariupol, in what appears to be a bid to draw Ukrainian forces away from the heavy fighting near the rebel strongholds in Luhansk and Donetsk.
The escalation of the conflict comes only hours after an inconclusive round of talks wrapped up between Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Belarus on Tuesday night.
Following the meeting, Putin described the increasingly violent war in Ukraine as a purely domestic affair.
“Frankly speaking, we cannot discuss any conditions for a ceasefire or possible agreements between Kiev, Donetsk and Luhansk,” Putin told reporters, according to a transcript published by his office. “This is not our business; it is a domestic matter of Ukraine.”
Putin’s remarks came less than 24 hours after Ukrainian authorities said they captured at least nine Russian paratroopers inside the country earlier this week.
Russian officials later went on to explain that the presence of members of an elite Russian airborne division in Ukraine was likely the result of an accidental incursion that occurred during a patrol.
Putin brushed off the incident — explaining that such incursions aren’t really that big a deal.
“After all, Ukrainian service members entered our territory with armored equipment,” said Putin. “And we didn’t have any problems.”
The U.N. estimates that more than 2,000 people have been killed since the pro-Russia uprising kicked off in April. The fighting has also displaced close to 400,000.

Window on Eurasia: West’s ‘Chamberlains of Today’ Will Soon Face a Larger War than the One in Ukraine, Russian Observer Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, August 28 – The war Vladimir Putin has launched against Ukraine will not be limited to that country, a reality that “the banal Chamberlains” of the West today have failed to recognize and respond to and that the world will suffer from as a result unless and until a new Churchill emerges, according to a Russian commentator.

Andrey Ivlyev, who writes for the Noviy Region news agency, says today that Putin’s seizure of Crimea and his intervention elsewhere in Ukraine has angered Western leaders but not led them to recognize the true nature of the threat he poses or to take actions to block it (http://nr2.com.ua/publications/Ekspert-Nachataya-Rossiey-voyna-Krymom-YUgo-Vostokom-Ukrainoy-ne-ogranichitsya-78773.html).

Putin’s actions “have become possible” in large measure as a result of Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and its “cynical” willingness to try to engage in peacemaking with someone who has shown himself to be an aggressor who shamelessly lies and is seldom if ever called for that.

“History is repeating itself,” Ivlyev says. “Over the course of 70 years of well-being, Western leaders have degenerated into banal Chamberlains. The world is waiting for the appearance of a new Churchill.” If that does not happen, “mir” in both its meanings – “the world” and “peace” – “will come to an end.”

It is “already obvious to everyone that Russian aggression is the result of the geopolitically pathetic nature of Western leaders” who view money as more important than “law, conscience and honor.”  What has happened in Ukraine already is horrific; “but this is only a pittance compared with what awaits the world tomorrow.”

By its pathetic failure to respond with anything more than economic sanctions, he continues, “the Western countries are in fact pushing the Putin criminals to carry out serious military crimes.”  And it is now clear that “sanctions are a fake which are not capable of stopping the fires of the war which has already begun.”

Everyone is aware that Ukraine by itself “is not capable of opposing the military might of Russia” and that the West has condemned it to defeat by its “demonstrative inaction.” This Western “policy” is “in every respect immoral,” especially given Western expressions of “concern” about what is going on which in turn are a reflection of “banal hypocrisy and exceptional cynicism.”

“The blame for the continuation of Russian aggression in Ukraine lies in full measure on the West” which its “beautiful and correct words” have done nothing to conceal “the traitorous nature” of its failure to act against Putin and Russian aggression, Ivlyev says.

“But,” as he points out, “the earth is round, and a time will come when understanding will come as well. Only the price of this understanding,” just like 70 years ago, “will be very high,” yet another confirmation of the truth of the ancient observation that “the most expensive thing on earth is stupidity because one has to pay for it most of all.”
